B

Across the United States, there are several places where two independent towns grew together to become one city —but kept both their names.

Winston Salem is one of them. It's a mid-sized city in what's called the plateau (high land),between the Atlantic Coast and the inland mountains in the state of North Carolina. The Winston part is a relatively new place, founded early this century. It's home to the nation's biggest open-air tobacco market.

The giant R. J. Reynolds Tobacco company's headquarters is in Winston Salem, and Winston is the name of one of Reynolds' best known cigarette brands. Fast-growing Winston soon surrounded the much older town of Salem, so in 1913, people in the area voted to combine them into a single place.

From a historical and tourist point of view, Salem, or Old Salem, as it's called today, is the interesting and unusual part of town.

Salem was founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. They spoke German, and their community was religiously based, with single men and single women living apart in separate dormitories. The Moravians greatly valued women's work and brainpower. In fact, one of the nation's oldest boarding schools for young women一the Moravians' Salem Academy founded in 1772 — is still in operation.

Over the years, Salem lost its Moravian character. That all changed, though, when a nonprofit group began to rehabilitate the historic area. These days Old Salem is what's called a living history museum, with exhibits, music, and tours of 18th-century houses, taverns (小旅馆)and Moravian dormitory

buildings just seven blocks from the tallest skyscraper in Winston-Salem.

The historic community is booming again. Just as R. J。Reynolds is taking in millions of dollars making cigarettes across town, Old Salem is generating about $15 million a year in tourism revenue (收入)and donations.

50. The city Salem is special for its______.

A. respect for brainpower

B. lifestyle and tradition

C. tobacco business

D. religious belief

51. We can learn from the passage that______.

A. Winston-Salem is the name of a city

B. Salem is home to the tobacco market

C. Old Salem is the name of a tobacco brand

D. The oldest boarding school for young men is in Winston-Salem

52. It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that______.

A. the two cities benefited each other

B. Salem developed faster than Winston

C. R. J. Reynolds Company has moved into Salem

D. the combination meets the wishes of the people

53. The word “rehabilitate” underlined in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to “______”.

A. enlarge

B. repair

C. reconstruct

D. decorate

54. The passage is probably followed by a paragraph about______.

A. the boarding school for women

B. some other attractions in Winston-Salem

C. how Winston makes profits from tourism

D. other examples of cities combined by two parts

C

I used to be really frustrated when I got "trapped" in the train station in New York. When

this happened, I spent time “observing” people and found that the New York City trains formed

“an underground NYC”.

I met all kinds of people there. Sitting in trains coming from suburban boroughs (R) like Queens and Brooklyn, I saw babysitters and house keepers, in white or pink uniforms, carrying a shopping bag with lunch and another prettier bag for their makeup. Some gentlemen in suits get squeezed in between ladies, reading the New York Times, holding Starbucks coffees and a piece of napkin(餐巾纸).

The passengers' skin colour would get lighter as the train from suburban areas to uptown NYC. Clothes brands changed from “Nike” and u Babyphat" to “Armani” and u Prada".

Getting lost is not embarrassing at all. Even New Yorkers who have lived in the city for 20

years need to check out the map before going to a new place by train. People from other states

are just as confused as foreigners when they are "thrown" underground.

It was funny when people carrying big backpacks and holding maps, asked me where they

could transfer while I was trying to find an exit. "I'm sorry, I am trying to find my way out too."

I felt really bad about not helping them. To my surprise, the two guys with blue eyes didn't look disappointed at all. They laughed and told me, u Oh, we are wondering if there is really an exit

because we have been walking around here for 10 minutes and we still don't know where to

transfer to the uptown train!"

NYC trains are just like doors rotating (旋转)on and on. IfI hadn't got lost several times, I might not have had the chance to stop and see what was happening outside my block.

55. We can infer from the third paragraph that __________ .

A. people of different backgrounds travel by subway in NYC

B. people in the suburban areas never wear “Armani” and "Prada"

C. people of lighter skin colour mostly live in the uptown NYC

D. people of a better financial status usually don't take the subway

56. The underlined word “transfer” in paragraph 5 probably means ____________ .

A. keep their backpacks

B. change another train

C. find the right exit C. find a taxi

57. According to the text, which of the following is TRUE about the author?

A. She was embarrassed when getting lost in the station.

B. She realised that only foreigners like her got trapped in the subway.

C. She found observing people in NYC trains quite frustrating.

D. She was grateful for the time when she lost her way in the subway.

58. What's the passage mainly about?

Growing up in the Hudson Valley area of New York State, I spent many a pleasurable weekend afternoon exploring the countryside and pushing my car to the max on winding and challenging drives in search of the spectacular views offered by the area’s many mountain ranges. Despite living in Florida for more than 20 years now, I find that I still miss those droves.

But what has helped a bit was the discovery of the ancient sand islands of the Brooksville Ridge, in the northeast of Tampa, where a golfer’s dream can come true and the Lake Wales Ridge, in central Florida, where the most important remaining patches of scrub(灌木丛)lie and one of the largest collections of rare organisms(生物体)in the world gather.

Visitors to the sunshine state may be surprised to learn that the Florida landscape is not as flat as a pancak e. Although the state’s average elevation(海拔)is only 100 feet above sea level, if you risk inland, you will find gently rolling terrain and spots where the elevation will afford you an actual view.

Sugarloaf Mountain(at a huge 312 feet), running northeast and southwest, is on the northern end of Lake Wales Ridge and is its highest point. Iron Mountain, located 60 miles south near Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, has an elevation of 295 feet. And the highest elevation in Florida (345 feet above sea level) belongs to Britton Hill in the northern Panhandle corner of the state.

Everything is located less than an hour away from downtown Orland and the area’s major tourist destination. So, if you are looking for something different and inexpensive to do in central Florida, why not take an easy drive and discover some treasure in the Florida “mountains”?

In face of a changing climate many species must adapt or die out. Ecologists(生物学家)forecast that cold-blooded tropical species(热带物种)are not as easily harmed to die out as previously thought.

“When its environment changes a living being can respond by moving away, adapting its physiology(生理机能)over time or, over generations, evolving(进化),” said lead author Dr Walters leading the resea rch. “The first two responses are easy to recognize, but a species’ ability to adapt quick enough to respond to climate change is an important and unresolved question for ecologists.”

Cold-blooded species, such as lizards and insects, have evolved a specialist physiology to develop well in a stable tropical environment. Unlike species which live in varied habitats tropical species live within a narrow range of temperatures, leading to increased dangers if those temperatures change.

The team thinks that there are also evolutionary advantages for species adapted to warmer environments. The “hotter is better” theory suggests that species which live in high temperatures will have higher fitness, resulting from a shorter generation time(增代时间). This may allow them to evolve relatively quicker than species in temperate environments.

“Forecasting the fates of any species is difficult, but it is necessary for protecting biodiversity and managing natural resources,” said Dr Walters. “It is belie ved that climate change causes a greater risk to tropical cold-blooded living beings than temperate or polar species However, as potential adaptation to climate change has not been considered in previous extinction(灭绝)models, we tested this theory with a model fore casting evolutionary responses.”

“Our model shows that the evolutionary advantage of a shorter generation time should make up for species which are adapted to narrow temperature ranges,” said Walters. “We forecast that the relative risk of extinction is likely to be lower for tropical species than temperate ones.”

55. What does the underlined word “its” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. Tropical species’
