An invisible smile

Mr. Dawson was an old grouch(脾气坏的), and everyone in town knew it. Kids knew not to go into his yard to pick a delicious apple, even off the ground, because old Dawson, they said, would come after you with his ball bullet gun.

One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was going to stay all night with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson’s house on the way to Amy’s house, but as they got close Janet saw him sitting on his front porch and suggested they cross over to the other side of the street. Like most of the children, she was scared of the old man because of the stories she’d heard about hi m.

Amy said not to worry, Mr. Dawson wouldn’t hurt anyone. Still, Janet was growing more nervous with each step closer to the old man’s house. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown(皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, a broad smile changed his entire face as he said, ―Hello Miss Amy. I see you’ve got a little friend with you today.‖Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh picked apple off his tree. They gladly accepted. Dawson had the best apples in town.

When they got out of Dawson on earshot, Janet asked Amy, ―Everyone says he’s the meanest man in town. How come was he so nice to us?‖

Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house he wasn’t very friendly and she was afraid of him, but she pretended he was wearing an invisible smile and so she always smiled back at him. It took a while, but one day he half-smiled back at her.

After some more time, he started smiling real smiles and then started talking to her. Just a

"hello" at first, then more. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.

"An invisible smile?" questioned Janet.

"Yes," answered Amy, "my grandm a told me that if I pretended I wasn’t afraid and pretended he was smiling an invisible smile at me and I smiled back at him, that sooner or later he would really smile. Grandma says smiles are contagious(传染性的)."

Are you an introvert (内向的人) or an extrovert? Before you say you are either one, you should know that there is a third option.

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, experts say there’s a middle ground between the two personality types –people who they call ―ambiverts (中间性格者)‖.

Introverts don’t like cr owds and enjoy keeping their thoughts to themselves, while extroverts,

on the other hand, like meeting new people and being the center of attention.Ambiverts, as the name suggests, have both introverted and extroverted characteristics. But neither set of characteristics is completely in control.

As a result, they can move between being social and being alone with greater ease (轻松) than either extroverts or introverts. For example, ambiverts often enjoy other people’s company. But after a long day of hard work, they sometimes prefer to read a book or watch a TV series at home alone.

―It is like they’re bilingual,‖ Daniel Pink, the host of Crowd Control, a US TV series on human behavior, told the Wall Street Journal. ―They have a wider range of skills and can connect with a wider range of people in the same way someone who speaks English and Spanish can.‖Ambiverts have gotten more attention in recent years, thanks to books, TEDx talks and consulting (咨询的) firms focusing on how personality traits (特征) cha nge people’s behavior in relationships and careers. In fact, roughly two-thirds of people in the US are ambiverts, according to a personality survey done by Adam M. Grant, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Gran t believes ambiversion takes good parts from introversion and extroversion. ―The ambivert advantage comes from being enthusiastic enough to persuade, but at the same time, listening carefully to others and avoiding seeming overly confident or excited,‖ he told Forbes magazine. But he also points out that unlike extroverts and introverts who tend to know what gives them energy, ambiverts can sometimes get stuck. They are often unsure which side of their personality should lead in a given situation.

63. What is the article mainly about?

A. Differences between introverts and extroverts.

B. Characteristics and advantages of ambiverts.

C. Why ambiverts have gotten more attention recently.

D. How personality traits change people’s behavior.

64. According to the article, ambiverts ______.

A. usually work hard and are successful in their careers

B. want to keep their thoughts to themselves all the time

C. tend to connect with more people than introverts

D. prefer being the center of attention to being alone

65. The underlined word ―bilingual‖ in Paragraph 5 probably means ______.

A. able to adapt to a new environment well

B. always ready to help those in need

C. able to speak two languages equally well

D. good at drawing attention from the crowd

66. What advantage does Grant think ambiverts have over introverts and extroverts?

A. They have more balanced personalities

B. They know what gives them energy.

C. They seem more enthusiastic and confident.

D. They can deal with a given situation better.

D

During the process of your growth, you are changing and also have more responsibilities and also more freedom to spend time with other people. While you may feel ready to make your own decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find you are arguing with your parents more than you used to. The reason why your parents do this is that they care about you and want to protect you from danger.

Here are some tips for how to avoid and deal with arguments with your parents:

【1】Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able to tell what they will say yes or no to before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you feel and suggest what you think are right rules. Your parents may be willing to listen to your ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.

【2】Try to stay calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your parents that you are responsible and mature (成熟的) by talking instead of shouting.

【3】Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount of time they spend with their friends. Communicate with each other and make some special family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend at home. Suggest activities that your whole family will enjoy together such as going for an outing, taking a bike ride, or going to the beach. 67. Your parents limit your activity mainly because they .

A. are afraid it will affect your study

B. are worried about your safety

C. think the thing you’ll do is bad

D. want you to be with them at home

68. We can learn from the passage that the right rules are those .

A. you have to obey

B. you and your parents have discussed

C. your parents make

D. you and your parents can both accept

69. When your parents prevent you from doing something, you should .

A. control yourself

B. argue with them

C. fight for your freedom

D. not listen to them

70. What’s the purpose of the family activities in the last paragraph?

A. To make parents happy.

B. To visit more places of interest together.

C. To make children and parents get along better.

D. To help the family build up their bodies.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese students they always say, ―My spoken English is poor.‖ However, their spoken English does not have to remain ―poor.‖ I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to increase their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be fluency(流利)not accuracy(精确). Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(积极主动的)language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive attitude, then, you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

If you do not use your English beyond the classroom, you will forget that English you know. Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.

Should students make friends on line? People have different opinions on this.

Some students agree. Firstly, the Internet can help them make various friends. Secondly, they can express their feelings and thoughts freely. Besides, chatting on line is also helpful for our language study.

However, other students have the opposite view. They think making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. In addition, some students get cheated on line.

In my opinion, students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us. / From my point of view, making online friends is not a b ad thing if we’re careful enough. Anyway, Internet widens our eyes and enriches our knowledge. However, we shouldn’t spend too much time on it and sometimes be careful with the people we chat with. Only in this way can making online friends be valuable to us.
