One family had an accident with some big fish. (Perhaps it wasn?t and accident for the fish.) The fish swan under their boat and bit holes in it. The sea came in, of course; and the boat soon sank. Most Americans wanted to get peace very much, and they were tired of the war. Just at that time, another candidate(侯选人) whose name was Meclellane promised the Americans peace at any price. Lincoln didn?t think it possible for himself to be president once more. On e night in August, he wrote in his diary: “It seems very probable that my government will lose this election.” But he had forgot his friendship with Thomas Nast, who had always been his firm supporter (坚定支持者)and who was very good at drawing cartoons. (绘画卡通画),Just as Meclellane was getting more and more support from the people, Nast drew many wonderful cartoons that were published in newspapers. The cartoons showed the Americans that Meclellane was a man who would give in(屈服)to the south, and he would serve(服务)the southern slave owners(奴力主)like their running dog. Passage 5

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. (值得赞许的)Almost everyone thinks attractive(有吸引力的)people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable(值得尊重的)jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive (有吸引力的)defendants. But in the executive (主管的) circle,(斡旋)beauty can become a liability.

Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine(女性化)and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally(传统上)female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.

This is true even in politics. "When the only clue(线索)is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, " says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness(魅力的结果)on political candidates (候选人). She asked 125 undergraduate(大学生)students to rank(排列)two groups of photographs(照片), one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The stu-dents were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote(投票)for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

Passage8

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there?s a big diff erence between being a writer and writing(名人). In most cases(案例)they are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You?ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. Only a few writers were kissed by fortune,(被财富所接进)however there are thousands more whose work is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由作家), I had no proposals at all. What I did have was a friend who found me in my room in a New York department building. I didn?t even care that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a good writer.

After a year I still hadn?t got a break (中断)and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I hardly made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn?t going to be one of those people who did wondering “What if”. I would keep putti ng(放飞)my dream to the test, even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

Passage 9

If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account(帐目) of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.

It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people then did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4, 000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.

Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings. And these have been sung and acted and told for many generations世代for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call …remembered history?. Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again

and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.

1. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage? .

A. Where there are no written records, there is no history

B. “Remembered history”, compared with written history, is less reliable

C. A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer many questions

D. Written records of the past play an important role in our learning of the human history

2. We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because .

A. there was nothing worth being written down at that time

B. the people there ignored the importance of keeping a record

C. the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fire

D. the people there did not know how to write

3. “Remembered history” refers to .

A. history based on a person?s imagination

B. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouth

C. songs and dances about the most important events

D. both B and C

4. “Remembered history” is considered valuable only when .

A. it is written down

B. no written account is available

C. it proves to be true

D. people are interested in it

5. The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about human history than we do now if

the ancient (古代)people had .

A. made more songs and dances

B. not burnt their written records in wars

C. kept a written record of every past event

D. told exact stories of the most important happenings

You're not participating; you're careless with your assignments and often hand them in late. You don't want to be here, do you? W: I'm sorry Dr. Smith. It's just ... I've got lots of things to do. I'm studying Web design and I'm a first-class player on our golf team. It's hard to see why I need to take a Spanish language class! M: Well, I'm sorry you feel that way, but learning another language can improve your performance in all of your efforts. And it can be very useful sometimes, for instance, when you visit your father in Mexico. W: Gosh! What do you mean, professor? Just because my father does business in Mexico I'm supposed to learn Spanish —on top of everything else I have to learn? It's just too much! And if I don't spend enough time on the golf course, I won't remain a first-class player on the golf team. I still don't see why I should learn a language that's so hard for me. There are no verb tenses on the golf course or in Web design! M: Listen Miranda, I've known your father since we were students at university 20 years ago —and have known you since you were a little girl. Of course, there are no verb tenses in golf or Web design. But I am giving you good advice. Please listen. W: Yes, of course, you're like my favorite uncle. M: Your brain isn't like a cup that has water flowing over its edge when it is full. Instead, it's like a muscle. Learning Spanish exercises your brain in new ways, making it stronger. It will strengthen your critical thinking skills and creativity. W: Really?! Then I guess I can give it a try. Question: 1、How is the woman doing in the man's class? 2、What does the woman think of learning Spanish? 3、What do we know from this conversation about the man? 4、What is the woman most likely to do after talking with the man? 2、passage 2 Have you ever heard of homeschooling?
