When I was in elementary school, I got into a major argument (辩论)with a boy in my class. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day. I was convinced (说服)that I was right and he was wrong—and he was just as convinced that I was wrong and he was right. The teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson. She brought us up to the front of the class, placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. I could clearly see that it was black. And she asked the boy what color the object was,―White,‖ he answered.

I couldn't believe he said the object was white, when it was clearly black! Another argument started between my classmate and me, this time about the color of the object.

The teacher told me to go and stand where the boy was standing and told him to come and stand where I had been. We changed places, and now she asked me what the color of the object was. I had to answer, ―White.‖ It was an object with two differently colored sides, and from his viewpoint it was white. Only from my side it was black.

My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day:

You must stand in the other person's shoes and look at the situation through their eyes in order to truly understand their thinking ways.

B. A girl in his class.

C. His mother.

D. His teacher.

A. White.

B. White and black.

C. Black

D. Blue and yellow.

48. What did the teacher teach the writer that day?

A. To truly understand others’ thinking ways.

B. To argue with others always.

C. We should change our places.

D. We’d better ask more questions.

C

We all know that money can't make us happy, but many times we act as if we'd be happier with a bit more money. We are trained to want to be richer; we are trained to want the latest style that television tells us; we want to earn more money because then we'll have a good life.

But none of that will make us happier. And the sad thing is that it can take us decades of pursuing (追求) wealth and expensive things before we realize that. So what will bring us happiness? Luckily, there are three things that don't cost anything. Here they are:

Good relationships. We have a human need to be close with other human beings. Having good, supportive friendships, a strong marriage or loving relationships with our family members will make us much more likely to be happy. Therefore, take time, today, to stay with your loved ones, to tell them what they mean to you, to listen to them, and to develop your relationships with them.

Positive thinking. Optimism(乐观) is one of the best indicators of people who lead a happy life. Happy people like the feel of controling their lives. So why not make positive thinking a habit? In fact, this should be one of the first habits you develop.

Flow. This is a popular concept on the Internet these days 一the state we enter when we are completely focused on the work or task.Having work and leisure(休闲)that gets you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to happiness. People find the greatest enjoyment not when they're doing a completely mindless task, but when they're interested in a mindful challenge.

If you are interested in some kind of work and fond of some kind of hobbies, it is not a bad idea. Turn off the TV 一this is the opposite of flow 一and then go outside and do something that truly makes you active.

49. To get on well with our family members, we can _________.

A. make more money for them

B. buy expensive things for them

C. stay with them and communicate with them

D. tell them everything that happens to us in our daily life

50. According to the passage, the first habit we should develop is _________.

A. to have a good hobby

B. to do things carefully

C. to make positive thinking a habit

D. to listen to your family members patiently

51. If we want to be happy, we should ______________.

A. turn off the TV

B. do our best to work

C. lose ourselves in playing

D. work hard and have a hobby

52. The passage mainly talks about_______________.

A. why to be happy

B. what makes us happy

C. how to make money

D. how to make friends

D

Text messaging, or simply "texting", whic h allows people to send and receive messages on mobile phones, becomes very popular today.

Everyone knows the advantages of texting. Texting helps to save money. If you have a few words to greet your families and friends on their birthdays or on some important festivals, sending messages can be cheaper than phone calling. Texting helps to save time. Even if you want to send a message to 100 people, you can do it one second. Texting helps you to "talk" to someone when he is too busy to answer the phone. Texting can also help you to "talk" to someone secretly if you don't want others to hear what you are talking on the phone. These advantages are so amazing that many people are crazy about it. They hold mobile phones in hands all day long, send dozens of messages each day, and even text while driving or walking.

However, texting has its disadvantages. Junk messages may come into your mobile phone box now and then. When your phone box gets too full, you can't receive any more messages. You may therefore miss some important information.

What's more, if you don't do texting properly, for example texting while driving or walking, it can be dangerous. It can cause injuries and even death. It was reported that about 6,000 people were killed and half a million were injured for this reason each year. In Fort Lee, a small town in New Jersey, USA, three people died because they walked into traffic while texting in 2011. Two researchers at Stony Brook University, New York found that texters are 60% more probably to have an accident than others. When people are texting, they don't notice other people or things around them. To reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the UN are now not allowed to text while driving. About 32 countries have passed laws restricting the use of mobile phones while driving.

Texting is a wonderful way of communication. However, only when we use it properly, can we fully enjoy the fun it brings.

53. We can know from the passage that_____________.

A. Phone calling is more popular than sending messages

B. Phone calling is cheaper than sending messages.

C. Texters are easier to have an accident.

D. Few people text to greet families and friends.

54. The underlined word restricting probably means _________.

A. not telling

B. not allowing

C. enjoying

D. making

55. The writer wants to tell us that __________ .

A. we should do less texting

B. texting has many advantages

C. texting is better than phone calling

D. we should do texting properly
