Last August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift—$7,000,a legacy (遗产) fro m their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. ―It really made a difference when we were going under financially.‖ says Dave.

But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive un expected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in other, it was more than $100,000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm .

Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They had a preference for comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase .

Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. ―Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything,‖ says th eir friend Sand Van Weelden, ―They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.‖

Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy—a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents —should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.

Neighbors helping neighbors ——that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.

V ATICAN CITY (Reuters) –Pope (教皇) Francis, giving his clearest indication that he wants a more austere(朴素的) Catholic Church, said on Saturday that it should be poor and remember that its responsibility is to serve the poor.

Francis explained to the reporters why he chose to take the name, Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi, a symbol of peace, austerity and poverty. The pope recalled, "While the formal voting continued, I thought of wars .... Francis of Assisi is the man of peace, poverty and the man who loves and protects others; and that is how the name entered my heart.", adding, "Oh, how I would like a poor Church and for the poor." St. Francis of Assisi, an Italian who died in 1226, abandoned his family’s fortune for a life of chari ty and poverty.

Since his election on Wednesday (March 13, 2013) as the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years, Francis has laid out a clear moral path for the 1.2-billion-member Church, surrounded by dishonors, tricks and argumentations. Francis has set a forceful moral tone and given clear signs that he will bring a new broom to the crisis-hit Church, favoring modesty and simplicity.

He thanked the thousands of journalists who had covered his election but invited them to "always try to better understand the true nature of the Church, with its virtues and crimes". He urged journalists to seek "truth, goodness and beauty" in the world and in the Church.

After the voting reached the two-thirds majority, applause broke out. The cardinal (主教), Claudio Hummes of Brazil, 78, then hugged and kissed him and told him "Don't forget the poor".

"That word entered here," he said, pointing to his head. On the night he was elected, he traveled on a bus. He went to the Church-run hotel where he had been staying before the election and insisted on paying the bill.

Pope Francis, Argentina's former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, has also urged Argentines not to make costly trips to Rome to see him but to give the money to the poor instead. It was the latest indication that the pope wanted the worldwide Church to take on an austere style.

25. Pope Francis chose the name ―Francis‖ because __________.

A. he thinks Francis is a symbol of peace, austerity and poverty.

B. he admires Francis of Assisi for his abandoning his fortune.

C. Francis of Assisi loves and protects people in Vatican City.

D. In his view, the Church shouldn’t be rich but poor and austere.

26. Which of the following does the writer disagree with?

A. Francis has arranged a moral road for the Church.

B. The Church has had a very bad reputation so far.

C. Francis means what he says and is worth trusting.

D. The reporters should have covered the Church better.

27. The newly elected pope Francis is from _________.

A. Italy

B. France

C. Argentina

D. Brazil

28. The passage is mainly about the __________ of Pope Francis.

A. indication

B. election

When you stand in front of a mirror, you know who you’re looking at.

Capuchin monkeys have a different experience, a recent study discovered. When they see themselves in a mirror, they’re just not exactly sure what it is.

Scientists define an animal as ―self-aware‖ if it touches a painted spot on its own face when it looks in a mirror. People start to recognize themselves in this way at the age of two. Most monkeys, on the other hand, ignore the markings on their faces. They just don’t understand that the image in the mirror is their own.

To find out whether capuchins are self-aware, psychologist (心理学家) Frans de Waal of

Emory University in Atlanta and his colleagues studied eight female and six male monkeys that live at a research center in Georgia.

Each capuchin entered a test room, where it faced three different situations. In the first situation, the monkey saw an unfamiliar monkey of the same sex on the other side of a glass barrier. In the second one, the capuchin saw a monkey of the same sex that it was familiar with. Finally, it met its own reflection in a mirror behind a screen.

When monkeys saw other monkeys that they already knew, they didn’t do much. When shown an unfamiliar monkey, males made threatening gestures. These were all natural reactions.

When the monkeys saw their own reflections, however, something strange happened. Females looked into their own eyes and acted friendly. Males also made more eye contact with their reflections than they did with the animals in the other two situations. Unlike females, though, they tried to escape the room, and otherwise acted conf used. ―The study s hows that capuchins have some self-awareness,‖ Frans de Waal concludes. They don’t quite see the image as another monkey, nor do they see it as themselves.

29. From the passage we know capuchin monkeys __________.

A. are able to make use of the mirror .

B. aren’t interested in using mirrors.

C. are a little self-aware.

D. don’t like mirrors at all.

30. What is the purpose of the experiment?

A. To see if the monkeys can recognize their own images in the mirror.

B. To know how different sexes of monkeys like each other.

C. To find out how male and female monkeys act together.

D. To see whether the monkeys like themselves or not in the mirror.

31. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Monkeys in the mirror.

B. Monkeys in the experiment.

C. Monkeys and their behavior.

D. Male and female monkeys.

D

Exposure to nuclear radiation leads to an increase in male births relative to female births, according to a new study by Hagen Scherb and Kristina Voigt from the Helmholtz Zentrum München. Their work shows that radiation from atomic bomb testing, the Chernobyl

利)nuclear power plant accident, and from living near nuclear facilities, has had a long-term negative effect on the male-female birth ratio.

The German scientists analyzed population data from 1945 to 2007 for the U.S. and 39 European countries. There was an increase in the number of baby boys relative to girls in all of the countries from 1945 to 1975. This was the case in many eastern European countries for several years after 1986.

Scientists are putting the first boom down to atmospheric bursts as a result of the atomic bomb tests of the 1940s and 1970s where radioactive atoms were burst into the atmosphere. Air currents caught these atoms and then distributed them around the world. They think the second boom is due to the 1986 on-the-ground incident --- Chernobyl disaster --- in which the reactor exploded in the Ukraine(乌克兰). The effects of Chernobyl were felt locally and no effect was seen in the U.S., probably because it was too far from the disaster to have an effect. ―The closer the country was to Chernobyl, the stronger the effect,‖ said study co-author Hagen Scherb, a biostatistician(生物统计学家)at the German Research Center for Environmental Health in Munich. More males were born relative to females in Belarus—the Ukraine's neighbour—than in France. The study is based largely on Cold War-era statistics, but the findings are highly relevant for how gender could be affected after future nuclear disasters.

And in the wake of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident experts are predicting another baby boy boom could be on the way, especially on the U.S. West Coast.

Previous radiation experiments on animals may give a clue for the increase in male births. Tests showed that radiation caused damage to the X chromosome(染色体)in sperm, Dr Scherb said.

A human sperm cell contains either an X or Y chromosome, while an egg only has an X chromosome. An XY combination will become a boy, while an XX combination will be a girl. 32.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A. Why the population in the world is increasing.

B. Nuclear radiation does damage to people's health.

C. Nuclear radiation has a negative effect on the environment.

D. Nuclear radiation has an effect on the male-female birth ratio..

33.What can infer from the passage?

A. Japan's recent nuclear accident will have little effect on the U.S. East Coast.

B. There was a sharp increase in the number of baby boys in France after 1986.

C. The atomic bombs exploded in Japan in 1945 couldn’t have affected the U.S.

D. Where radiation has spread recently, women can not give birth to baby girls.

34.How does radiation influence the male-female birth ratio?

A. It weakens the X chromosome in sperm.

B. It stops X chromosomes and Y chromosomes combining.

C. It causes damage to eggs with an XX combination.

D. It strengthens the Y chromosome in sperm.

35. Where does the text most probably come from?

A. A biology textbook.

B. A military defense report.

C. An entertainment magazine.

D. A news report.

1. 37

Nobody likes to talk about death, but the reality is – everybody is going to die at one point. None of us know the day, or the hour. Therefore, today is all we have. Don’t go to your grave with unfulfilled dreams. Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now.

2. The world is waiting on your gift

I know this may be hard to believe, but the world is waiting on YOU! Yes, YOU! 38 Sure, other people may be able to sing. But they’ll never be able to sing exactly like you. Sure other people can write, but they’ll never be able to write from the same pers pective in which you write. Don’t deprive(剥夺) the world of your gift. It’s the oxygen that we need to survive. Thus, it is your responsibility to figure out exactly what your gift is, and use to better your life and the lives of those around you.

3. 39

You can dream about writing the grea t American play that you want, but it’s never going to happen unless you actually put pen to paper. You can dream about finding a cure for cancer, but it will never happen unless you actually go to school to become equipped with the necessary tools to

One possible version:

As Wang Enge, newly-appointed President of Peking University puts it, ―Give yourself two wings-ideal and perseverance; make two friends-library and playground.‖

What he said is surely of great importance and benefit to us. Ideal or faith reflects what we value and cherish in the world, which will shape us in the future. Without it , we may get lost and don’t know where to start in life. On the contrary, if you stick to it and persevere, never quitting halfway, you will make it.

And then we have another two friends-library and playground. A library is where knowledge is stored. Reading and equipping us with knowledge is a must for us to survive or even fly higher. Meanwhile, a playground is another friend we can’t ignore. Without good health, you can do nothing but lie down, sighing all day and left in deep sorrow.

M: So, what do you do in your free time?

W: I like playing soccer. What do you like?

M: Nothing special. Just hanging around.

W: Come to a match with me. You might get interested in the game.

(Text 5)

W: Ben wants a bicycle for his birthday, but they’re so expensive.

M: What about some videos or a guitar? He loves music.

W: I know, but he’s wanted one fo r a long time.

M: Well, let’s get him what he wants, then.

(Text 6)

M: You didn’t forget to pack the camera this year, did you?

W: No, Jack, it’s in your hand luggage.

M: And the traveller’s cheques? Have you got them in your bag?

W: Yes, Jack. 6For goodness sake stop fussing! You ask me the same questions every time we go away.

M: I know, and you still manage to forget something.

W: Well, next year you can see to everything yourself. Now, calm down and give me the tickets! M: 7The tickets? What tickets? Do n’t tell me you left them on the kitchen table!

(Text 7)

M: How was your weekend?

W: Not too good actually. 8I went to the football game and unfortunately on the way back, I left my mobile phone on the bus. When I got home, I rang the bus company. They sai d it wasn’t at the lost property office. I think someone must have taken it.

M: Oh, that’s terrible. I think if you’ve got insurance9you need to go to the police station and report it missing. If you want I could come with you.

W: OK. Well, I’m free now. Are you?

M: I have to go to the bank but 10give me twenty minutes and I’ll meet you at the café down the road.

W: OK. 10I’ll see you at ten.

(Text 8)

M: Wendy, what are you writing?

W: Well, 11it’s a form for a professional matchmaking company. You know, a way to meet people, to date … like a boyfriend.

M: How does it work?

W: First you have to pay to register. 11Then you fill out a form. You write a short description of yourself: your age, interests, backgrounds, that sort of thing. And you write the thing s you’d like to find in a partner, too. Then they send you a list of people who are a good match.

M: Hmm, I don’t know.

W: My friend tried it, and she really likes it. 12She said it’s a good way to meet someone with the same interests. And the other good thing about this is: 13If I don’t find anyone I want to date in

three months, I can get my money back — guaranteed!

M: Oh, Wendy, there are no guarantees in dating!

(Text 9)

M: Did you understand that memo about changes in the pension scheme?

W: No. Andrew can’t just send a document round. We need to know exactly what’s happening and why.

M: He just won’t deal with people face to face. That’s the problem. 15I mean, the idea that we have regular communication meetings is a joke. When did we have the last one? All he does is shut himself in his office and send e-mails.

W: I know. 16I think we should talk to other Olympus offices to see what they’ve heard about this. M: Could you do that? And for now I’ll send another e-mail to Andrew and try to get him to set up

a meeting about this. 17We could all be affected if they’ve changed where they’ve invested the

fund. I don’t believe they’re doing it for our benefit. This must be a way of trying to save money.

W: OK, I’ll find out what other offices are doing about thi s and get back to you. And good luck with our dear director. 17I hope he doesn’t agree and then call off the meeting at the last minute like last time.

W: In general, American food is mild tasting. Salads are very popular and are served all year, but especially in summer. 18Two of the most popular American foods are hot dogs and hamburgers.

You will find these available at almost all ―fast food‖ restaurants.

When dining out, you can ask for tea, milk, coke, wine or beer if you prefer. Restaurants can only serve alcoholic drinks if they have a license. Normally, 19when you eat in a private home, it is considered better manners to take whatever is being served and not to ask for something different, unless the hostess gives you a choice.

The main course served in American meals is usually meat, fish or poultry, but rarely is more than one of these served at the same meal. Most Americans eat breakfast and lunch quickly unless it is a social, business, or family occasion. The evening meal, however, is usually longer and a time for the family to gather together. Rushing through daytime meals is part of the fast pace in America. 20Another reason for rushing through daytime meals is that many people eat

breakfast and lunch in restaurants that are usually crowded with people waiting for a place so that they can be served and return to work at the proper time.
