A

Winter Vinecki began running at age five, but got serious in 2009 after her father died of cancer —that’s when she decided to honor his memory by running a marathon on every continent (大洲) before her 15th birthday.

Scope: Team Winter is an organization you founded to raise money for cancer research. How did it get started?

Winter: At first, Team Winter was formed to fight childhood obesity (肥胖). When I was 8, I ran a race and raised $1,100 for that cause. But less than a year later, my dad got cancer. I knew I had to do something to help. When I started, my goal was to raise $10,000. I’ve raised well past that — almost $500,000.

Scope: What goes through your mind when you run?

Winter: When I’m having a hard time during a race, I think about my dad. If he could deal with the pain of cancer, I can deal with any type of pain. He was a very friendly person. He was always smiling and very happy even when he had cancer.

Scope: Is your age ever an obstacle (障碍) in your races?

Winter: I’ve been turned down by race directors who won’t let anyone younger than 16 or 18 compete. But Diana Nyad, the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, told me, ―Never let them tell you it can’t be done.‖ From then on I knew my age wasn’t the problem.

Scope: You’ve probably inspired lots of people too.

Winter: I’ve heard about kids doing projects like me. Once in a restaurant, a boy came up to my mom and me and told us his da d had cancer too. Now he’s competing in running for his dad. Hearing stories like that helps keep me going.

21. What do we know about Team Winter?

A. It always holds different races.

B. Its final goal is to raise $500,000.

C. It was named after W inter’s father.

D. It was to help obese children at first.

22. When Winter has a hard time during a race, what keeps her going?

A. Her father’s illness.

B. Her father’s success.

C. Her father’s bravery.

D. Her father’s kindness.

23. Winter’s words in the last paragraph tell us that ________________.

A. she sets a good example to others

B. she hopes others will do what she does

C. the boy wants to join Team Winter

D. the boy invites her to compete with him

B

I love my blackberry—it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts .Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备) and truly communicate with others.

On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the

classroom, I have a rule —no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.

Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technolo gy and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course the material and the class discussion.

I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.

I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

24. Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with________________.

A. the course material

B. others’ misuse of technology

C. discussion topics

D. the author’s class regulations

25. The underlined word ―engage‖ in para.4 probably means _______________.

A. keep students from doing independent thinking

27. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author _________________.

A. is quite stubborn

B. will give up teaching history

C. will change his teaching plan soon

D. values technology-free dialogues in his class

The Crown Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guest will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity – roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel.

The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guest staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokesw oman, said, ―Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but generally I don’t think people will take advantage of our program.‖Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition and 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website https://www.doczj.com/doc/7015691620.html, recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. ―Because Cope nhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).‖

Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they are in poorly lit places –and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.

Don’t forget the clock – or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plants can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

32. The text is especially helpful for those who care about _____________.

A. their home comforts

B. their body shape

C. house buying

D. healthy diets

33. A home environment in blue can help people _______________.

A. digest food better

B. reduce food intake

C. burn more calories

D. regain their appetites

34. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?

A. Eat quickly.

B. Play fast music

C. Use smaller spoons.

D. Turn down the lights

35. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Is Your House Making You Fat?

B. Ways of Serving Dinner

C. Effects of Self-Consciousness

D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?

期中英语考试卷及答案

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
