A

Imagine this:your child has just been involved in an emergency. You

call 911. The medical workers rush in and begin asking you questions as they work to rescue your child. But they also ask questions about your child's medical history. It's hard to think clearly. You begin to answer and then end up saying,“I don't remember. I don't know.” So,many doctors suggest that parents keep a record of their children's important health facts handy. This can often help the medical team make a better and more rapid diagnosis(诊断) of a problem at a time when time really counts.

The most important information to know is the child's allergies(过敏).It is especially crucial if the child is allergic to any medicine-penic- illin, for example.Food allergies can come into play, too,so make note of those as well.Children who have been hospitalized in the past may have developed latex(胶乳) allergies.Often this information can help emergency workers find a cause for problems like breathing difficulties.

Keep a list of any medicine, including what your child is now taking. Some medicines can cause an adverse reaction when they are taken together,so the doctors need the information before they give your child anything. You'll need to know when the child took the medicine last and how much was taken.

It is also important to tell emergency workers about any health problem or illness your child has had. These pre-existing conditions can have a huge effect on the type of tests and treatment in an emergency.

Consider having any child who has a health problem wear a tag (标签) around his neck. This kind of rapid notice can help doctors who are providing emergency care, especially if your child suddenly becomes ill at the day care, school,or a friend's house.

21.According to the first paragraph, the author probably thinks that,in an emergency,________.

A.parents usually can't recall their children's medical history

B.doctors shouldn't ask parents too many questions

C.the medical service offered by 911 is not good

D.parents should record their children's daily activities

22.How many types of allergies are mentioned in Paragraph 2?

A.One. B.Two.

C.Three. D.Four.

23.The underlined word “adverse” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.

A.beneficial B.harmful

C.physical D.emotional

24.According to the passage, the tag children with a health problem should wear around the neck includes the following EXCEPT ________.

A.allergies B.medications

C.pre-existing illnesses D.height and weight

Government statistics recently showed that in the UK,more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their homes.A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home.Electric shocks can cause a person's heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies.

What to do? If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an electric shock, don't touch them! If they are still holding the appliance(家用电器) that has given them shock, unplug it or turn off the power at its source.Under_no_circumstances_will_you_try_to_move

_the_appliance_with_your_hands!

If you can't turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair,to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.

The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is absolutely necessary. It is essential to maintain the victims body heat,so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else.If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(恢复知觉).Keep the victim's head low until professional help arrives. If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.

25.What kind of passage is it?

A.An advertisement. B.A horror story.

C.A news report. D.First aid emergency advice.

26.The underlined sentence,“Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hands !” implies that ________.

A.you should move the appliance that caused it

D.it is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your hands

27.When a person has got an electric shock, you should ________.

C.Tips on providing first aid to breath.

D.Tips on providing first aid to victims.

Computers are increasingly important in health care. But can they also help poor people escape poverty? Vikram Sheel Kumar thinks so.Mr Kumar is a doctor,an engineer and the head of a small business in Boston,Massachusetts. And,in September, this 28-year-old man received an award for Technology in Service to Humanity. That award came from Technology Re v ie w magazine.

His goal is to improve health care in poor nations with the help of computer which is small enough to hold in one hand. These devices are known as personal digital assistants,or P.D.A.'s.

Dr Kumar started his company two years ago.It is called Dimagi, which means “smart guy” in Hindi. His parents came from India. There,Dimagi computer programs are used to organize medical information of more than 70,000 patients.

Dr Kumar says health care workers had problems at first, but then learned quickly how to use the devices.Nurses no longer have to carry heavy documents whenever they travel to villages. And they no longer have to copy large amounts of health information by hands.

In South Africa, health workers are using a Dimagi program for a different purpose in the KwaZulu-Natal area. They use it to provide patients with results from tests for HIV,the virus that causes AIDS.

People who get tested must enter a secret identification code to see the results.

And,in Boston, children with diabetes are using a Dimagi system to learn about their disease and how to control it.The software includes games and ways for the children to communicate with others with diabetes.

Dr Vikram Kumar says it is important to get patients involved in their own health care by helping them gain information. He says there are endless possible uses for this technology, especially in developing countries. C.they can store a lot of information of the patients which otherwise doctors have to copy by hands

D.they are written in a secret code that only patients know

31.We can infer from the passage that ________.

A.Dimagi program is more developed in India than in any other country

B.in South Africa people who have been tested for HIV can have their results protected

C.the best way to help the patients, according to Dr kumar,is to help them to know their disease

This is not a typical summer camp.Michelle Pawlaw and eight other teenage girls are participating in the three-day camp offered by the Arlington County Fire Department located just outside Washington.Firefighter Clare Burley is in charge of the program, who said the purpose was to try to get young women interested in considering the fire service as a career.

The free-of-charge,overnight camp is designed to let the girls experience what firefighters do to protect the community. That includes some rigorous activities such as moving a fire victim.“I didn't think I could pull that 170 pound body with a friend, but I was actually able to do it.” she said.

They take classes and learn how to climb the ladder on a fire truck,

“Every week without fail on Saturday, the job is to wash all the equipment. And we want the girls to see this is what we do.This is a typical day in a firehouse,” she said.

Firefighting is still a male-dominated service, but Burley says with 22 women on its force of 320 the Arlington County Fire Department is above the national average of 4.5 percent. She joined the department seven years ago.

“We do everything that the guys do to the same standard. We are tested to the same standard. We are expected to operate at the same standard,” she said.

Most of the girls said they had never thought about becoming a firefighter, but the camp was a great learning experience.“I think it is definitely not a job that only men can do.Women can do it just as well as men can,” said Michelle Pawlaw.

A.To tell the girls how to put firefighting knowledge into practice.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

There is no doubt that ...(毫无疑问)结构。 的用法,易考点为该短语位于句首作状语和作后置定语两点,考生应能掌握be absorbed by(为某事物所吸引);还应联系be engaged in, be devoted to, be involved in和be lost in等常见重点近义短语。 4. apart from apart from是常见介词短语,意为“除……之外”,考生应熟练掌握近义的词和短语:except, besides, in addition (to), other than, except for, except that, except when等。 be available to意为“可利用的”,be available for意为“使……可以享受某物;使……买得起某物”, 要了解二者的区别。 预测2010年高考命题会以考查词义或者形容词短语作后置定语为命题方向。 6. consist of consist of是近几年高考高频考查短语。 如be made up of, be composed of, constitute, be formed of 等。 break down,break up, break off, break away, break in等,都要求考生熟知它们的常见义项,因为 命题时可能会对该短语直接考查,也可在短文中考查对其意义的理解。 _____ vt.&vi. _____ vt.& n. 治愈;痊愈→______adj. _____ vt. 吸收;吸引;使专心→______adj. _____ adj. 严重的;严厉的;剧烈的 characteristic 2. conclude;conclusion 3. defeat 4. attend;attendance 5. expose;exposure 6. cure;curable 7. control 8. absorb;absorbed 9. severe 10. _____ vt. 宣布;通告→______n. _____ vt.&vi. 捐献;贡献;捐助→______n.
