Britons love talking about the weather, and with Europe caught in the midst of a heat wave there’s plenty for them to get excited about. Many parts of China have also been struggling with record-breaking temperatures this hot summer.

But beside fr om a simple “hot”, what other ways are there to describe the summer heat? Apart from phrases like “piping hot”, “sweltering heat” and “scorching sun”, there are many interesting expressions that relate to unbearably hot weather and offer a glimpse into foreign culture.

(1)Dog days of summer

In books and newspaper articles, the period from early July to mid-August is often referred to as the “dog days of summer”. Some think the expression means the weather is so hot that dogs go wild. But

Dog Star, the brightest star in the summer sky and part of the Great Dog constellation — rises at the same time as the sun. The Romans associated the hot weather with this star and would sacrifice a dog every year in April to appease the rage of Sirius.

(2)Hotter than a two-dollar pistol “炙手可热”

This expression comes from 19th century America, when the US was engulfed in the Civil War and many carried pistols for self-protection. Cheap pistols would get hot when fired repeatedly, but another reason for the expression is that no pistol could cost 2 dollars (12 yuan) unless it had been stolen. In slang Englis h, stolen goods are often said to be “hot” and anyone in possession of hot goods is likely to get their fingers burned, in other words, to be arrested.

(3)So hot you can fry an egg on the sidewalk

This expression needs no explanation and al though its origin is unclear, it hasn’t stopped thousands of curious tourists from testing if the saying is true, with the result that sidewalks in Death Valley, California –the hottest place in the US – are now littered with broken eggshells and the gooey remainders of mostly raw eggs. Early in July, the local government issued a plea for tourists to stop their cooking experiments. Even so, it is actually possible to fry an egg on the sidewalk, so long as you use a frying pan with a lid and the temperature is at least 49 C.

(4)Hinges of Hades “人间炼狱”

For those who believe it exists, hell is undoubtedly the hottest place on earth, so unsurprisingly there are several expressions that refer to hell (Hades), or even the devil himself. “Hotter than the hinges (gates) of Hades” or “Hotter than the hobs (fireplaces) of Hell” are the oldest versions, but more a musing variations have become popular, such as “hotter than the devil’s underwear”.

Heat Waves Make Cities Swelter Synergistically 【

No wonder it’s gonna be a hot time in the old town

tonight. Cities can be anywhere from two to 20 degrees

Fahrenheit hotter than nearby countryside, due to

what’s known as the "urban heat island" effect. But

when heat waves roll through, they interact

synergistically with the urban heat island—boosting temperatures even higher than you might expect.

Researchers used a June 2008 heat wave in Baltimore as a case study. They compared temperatures downtown to those near the Baltimore/Washington International Airport—a residential, half-forested area. Using modeling software, they found that temperatures downtown weren't simply a sum of the urban heat island and the heat wave—they were three and a half degrees hotter than that. The results appear in the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology.

Urban areas are carpeted in asphalt and concrete, which don't hold water like soil and vegetation do. So while the countryside sweats during a heat wave, cooling itself through evaporation, the city just bakes. But researchers say there's a simple solution to beat the heat: install green roofs, and plant some trees. Which would help the concrete jungle live up to the second half of its name.

Tips for Avoiding Sunstroke

Sunstroke, mainly the result of body being exposed to

a high temperature for too long a time, can be described as a condition in which the body's ability to regulate heat fails.

Symptoms of sunstroke: Headache, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, hot dry skin, flushed skin, high body temperature, lack of sweating, rapid pulse, rapid breathing, seizures, loss of consciousness.

Treatment For Sunstroke

Get yourself out of the sun as soon as possible. Get inside an air-conditioned building or at least go under some shade.

Next, remove as much of your clothing as is possible, especially your shoes, socks and hats. This is because such clothes make the heat remain trapped inside.

Drink lots and lots of water and other fluids, except alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Don't gulp it all

After resting for a few minutes, take a cool shower. If it is not possible to have a bath, at least apply water to your forehead, neck, face and arms.

Then lie down on a flat surface and place a cool, damp cloth over your forehead. Elevate your feet, above your head, allowing blood to circulate and get rid of headache and dizziness.

In sunstroke, the body does not only lose fluids, but salts as well. Replenish the same by drinking a sports drink especially formulated with electrolytes or eating something salty.

You should start feeling better by this time. However, if this is not the case, it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention.

Some More Remedies

Place ice packs at the neck, armpits, and groin. You can also rub the limbs with ice cubes.

Massage the arms and legs gently. This will allow some cool blood to return to the brain as well as the core of the body.

If the temperature is not coming down, you can wrap up the body with a wet sheet or towel.

You can also apply a cold mud pack to the stomach and eyes. This will help keep the body cool.
