(A)

Why does the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!

That’s an old joke in the west, but it came to my mind again when I saw people crossing the road at the intersection of Shanxi Road and Huaihai Road in Shanghai.

When the traffic light was red, a group of people were waiting for the light to change. Suddenly one man began rushing to the other side of the road. Soon others followed him at the crossing and more people did the same. Just like chickens, they didn’t mind the honking horns(喇叭声) and kept crossing the road in a mess.

Every year several thousand people are either killed or hurt on the roads in Shanghai. And at least one third of them were jaywalking(乱穿马路). Jaywalking is very common in Shanghai. It seems that jaywalkers are not afraid of the danger to themselves.

Traffic laws are to keep people safe. So we should obey them, and have good road-crossing habits. When someone starts to jaywalk, we should stop him, and never follow him. That way we can avoid the traffic accidents.

( ) 45. The underlined word “intersection” here probably means “”.

A. road

B. bridge

C. crossing

D.

traffic

( ) 46. The writer saw people in Shanghai that day.

A. crossing the road in a mess

B. waiting for the green light patiently

C. crossing the road with chickens

D. hurting each other in the street

( ) 47. How does the writer like what he saw in Shanghai that day?

A. He thinks it’s OK.

B. He thinks it’s wrong.

C. He has no idea of it.

D. He doesn’t mention it

(B)

I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻) word to anyone or about anyone.

Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.

Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food fest”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.

By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock,

everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(收成)of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!

Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!

( )48. According to paragraph 2, people wish they also had a garden so that_______.

A. they could grow vegetables and sell at the market

B. they didn’t have to spend so much money on food

C. they could invite their neighbors and hold parties in it

D. they could spend happy times together with their family in it

( )49. For what purpose did Happy and Ben invite the neighbors to their garden?

A. To ask them to attend a birthday party.

B. To help them get to know each other.

C. To ask them to share some interesting stories.

D. To let them enjoy what they grew in the garden.

( )50. What did the writer most probably think of the time he spent in the garden?

A. It was too long.

B. It was not as good as he thought.

C. It was wonderful.

D. It was too terrible.

(C)

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant

and gave big parties for their new neighbours.

It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses”because “Jones”is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses”in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

51. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ________.

A. want to be as rich as their neighbours

B. want others to know or to think that they are rich

C. Don’t want others to know they are rich

D. want to be happy

52. It can be inferred (推断) from the story that rich people like to ________.

A. live outside New York City

B. live in New York City

C. live in apartments

D. have many neighbours

53. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones”in his series of short stories because “Jones” is ________.

A. an important name

B. a popular name in the United States

C. his neighbour’s name

D. not a good name

(D)

Everybody may have seen the film “Death on the Nile (n. 尼罗河)”, but nobody can imagine that the writer of the story, Agatha Christie, saved a baby in a most unusual way.

On Sept 4 and 5 this year, the 11th G20 Leaders Summit (峰会) was held in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province in east China. It was a big success.

G20 is made up of the world’s most important 20 economies (经济体)—the European Union and 19 countries. Both developed countries like the US and Germany, and developing countries like Brazil and China are members of it. Every year, the G20 members get together and talk

about the world economic events. For example, after the financial crisis (金融危机) in 2008, they agreed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF, 国际货币基金组织) could give money to countries in need. Other events also included making sure poorer areas have enough food and good development.

It was the first ever G20 summit to be hosted in China. The logo of the summit looks like a bridge. “I got the idea from the old bridges at the West Lake,” said the designer Yuan Youmin. “Bridges bring people and places together in many different ways, just as the G20 makes east and west get together.”

Chinese food also pleased many foreign guests with its culture. At the welcome dinner to the member leaders there was one famous dish—Dongpo Rou. Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo made the dish first. Su once lived in Hangzhou.

One main topic of the summit this year is to develop goals and plans of creative growth for G20 members. China itself is developing its creative ability in recent years. It is not easy to host such a summit, but China has made a great contribution (贡献) to the G20 by bringing out a new future.

He’s tired, and so am I.(=I’ m also tired.) You can swim, and so can I.(=I can also swim.) She has had supper, and so can I.(=I’ve had lunch, too.) Tom speaks English, and so does his sister.(=His sister speaks English, too.) A: I went to the park yesterday. B: So did I.(=I also went to the park yesterday.) 2.“So +主语+be/have/助动词/情态动词”结构中的主谓是正常语序,so相当于indeed,certainly,表示说话人对前面或对方所说情况的肯定、赞同或证实,语气较强,意思是“确实如此”。 例如 A:It was cold yesterday.昨天很冷。B:So it was.的确如此。(=Yes,it was.) A:You seem to like sports.B:So I do.(=Yes,I do.) A:It will be fine tomorrow.B:So it will.(=Yes ,it will.) 3.“主语+do/does/did + so”结构指的是按上句的要求做了。此句型中do so代替上文中要求做的事,以免重复。 My Chinese teacher told me to hand in my composition on time and I did so.(=I han ded in my composition on time.) 语文老师叫我按时交作文, 我照办了。 4.So it is with…或 It is the same with…句型表示“……(的情况)也是如此。”当前面的句子中有几种不同形式的谓语时,要表示相同情况,必须使用本句型,不能使用so 引起的倒装句。 She doesn’t play the piano, but she likes singing. So it is with my sister. 5、There you are.

M10U1 Reading: Teach a man to fish授人以渔 In 1985, there was little rainfall in Ethiopia, which led to poor harvests and the death of many of the country‘s cattle. The gravity of the situation shocked Bob Geldof, an Irish musician, so he organized a charity concert called Live Aid to raise money for the victims of hunger in Ethiopia. The concert took place on 13 July 1985 in two places—London and Philadelphia—and included the biggest stars of the time. Geldof intended the concert to raise money for hunger relief and to make the public more aware of the problem. In the end, $100 million was raised, which was used to buy food and to provide help with development projects in Ethiopia. The concert also made the headlines around the world, and put great pressure on politicians and statesmen to do something about the problem of world hunger. Live Aid was in 1985, but for many people in the developing world, disease and poverty are still a serious problem. According to the United Nations, ten million people die every year of starvation or problems related to having a poor diet. In fact, hunger is the world‘s number one health risk, killing more people than any disease. In wrestling with the dilemma of worldwide hunger, the United Nations set up an agency called the World Food Programme(WFP) in 1963. The WFP has organized a number of programmes, including the Food-for-Life programme, which sends emergency food aid to countries during times of trouble; the Food-for-Growth programme, which targets people most at risk, such as babies, pregnant women and old people; and the Food-for-Work programme, which helps people without jobs support themselves by giving them work and paying them in food aid. Through programmes like these, the WFP has helped more than one billion people since it was set up. This is beyond doubt an amazing achievement, but is it enough? Today, some developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America stand at a crossroads. While they are seeing great development, they are still poorer than many countries in other parts of the world, and there is a danger that they could fall further behind developed countries. They need help, but the sad truth is that merely sending loaves of bread is not enough. It is only a short-term solution to a long-term problem. There is a saying that goes, ?Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for t he rest of his life.‘ In order to find a permanent solution to this long-term problem, countries need to develop so that they can either grow the food they need, or have enough money to buy this food on the world market. What developing countries really need to do is to stop poverty by fighting the causes of it. One
