阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出能填入相应空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Not long ago, I spent the morning having coffee with Kanzi. Kanzi is a fellow of few 36 —384 of them by formal count, though he probably knows dozens more. He has a very 37 , very expressive and very loud voice, but it's not especially good for forming words, which is the way of things when you’re a bonobo,

the close and more peaceable cousin of the chimpanzee.

But Kanzi is “talkative” 38 . He keeps a sort of vocabulary close at hand —three thin sheets 39 hundreds of colorful symbols that 40 all the words he's been taught or 41 on his own. He can build thoughts and sentences, all by 42 .

Kanzi knows the value of breaking the ice. So he points to the coffee symbol on his 43 and then points to me. He then sweeps his arm wider, 44 in Sue Rumbaugh, an investigator at the Great Ape Trust, and lab supervisor Tyler Romine. Romine fetches four coffees, takes one to Kanzi, and then 45 us again. Kanzi drinks and listens 46 we talk.

"He's been stubborn this morning," Sue Rumbaugh tells me, "and we couldn't get him to come out to the yard. So we had to negotiate a piece of honeydew melon 47 ." Honeydew melon is not yet on Kanzi's word list; 48 , he points to the green watermelon.

Humans have a strange relationship with beasts. They are our companions and our laborers. We love them and cage them;49 them and abuse them. And, of course, we cook and eat them. Our excuse has always been that animals are ours to do with as we 50 simply because they don't suffer the way we do. They don't think, not in any meaningful way.

But one by one, the barriers we've built between ourselves and the beasts are being 51 . Humans are the only animals that use tools, we used to say. But what about the birds and apes that we now know do 52 ? And as for humans as the only beasts with language? Kanzi himself could tell you that's 53 .

All of that is 54 us to look at animals in a new way. It's not 55 to study an animal's brain; we need to know its mind.

36. A. friends B. words C. habits D. relatives

There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ greatly, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low level of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is brought up. If an individual is disabled environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never gain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be proved by the case of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old , their parents died, and they were placed in separate homes. Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated (与世隔绝的) community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was brought up in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated(刺激) intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have been tested at roughly the same level.

56. This selection can best be titled_________.

A. Measuring Your Intelligence

B. Intelligence and Environment

C. The Case of Peter and Mark

D. How the brain Influences Intelligence

57. According to the passage, the average I.Q.is _____.

A.85

B.100

C.110

D.125

58. The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that _______.

A. individual with identical brains seldom test at same level

B. an individual's intelligence is determined only by his environment

C. lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence

D. changes of the environment produce changes in the structure of the brain

59. This passage suggests that an individual’s I.Q.______.

A. can be predicted at birth

B. stays the same throughout his life

C. can be increased by education

D. is determined by his childhood

Visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Wall Street, above, helped

make New York City the country's favorite tourist destination last

year. (Photo By Henny Ray Abrams/Associated Press) Associated Press-----The number of visitors to New York City fell last year for the first time since 2001, but falls in tourism elsewhere across the United States made it the most popular destination in the country for the first time in almost two decades, tourism officials said on Monday.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg painted the 3.9 percent drop -- an estimated (估计) 45.3 million visitors -- as a victory, saying that during the recession(衰退)the city had expected losing as much as 10 percent of its tourists. The city expects to recover most of the loss this year and remains on track to hit its long-standing goal of 50 million yearly visitors by 2012, the mayor said.

"We have made our city cleaner, safer and more exciting than ever," Bloomberg said at a news conference at a Brooklyn restaurant. "I do think we'll continue to see even more tourists on our streets as the economy improves, and I think that we'll continue to develop better than other cities."

Though many travelers stayed home simply because money was tight, the reducing number in international visitors could result from swine flu(猪流感) fears and concerns over border security measures, Bloomberg said.

Still, the Statue of Liberty, which reopened its crown to tourists, reported a jump in the number of visitors. So did other New York City attractions. And the city's entertainment and hotel industry -- which provides one-tenth of the city's private jobs -- actually grew in 2009.

"The lodging industry (酒店业)really is using discounting to motivate demand," he said, adding that the price drops have importantly boosted "the city's ability to keep the level of tourism that it's had."

" Millions of Chinese are learning English, but only 24,000 Americans are learning Chinese," said Andrew Corcoran of the San Francisco - based Chinese American International School.

I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it’s like to work in a field under the control of men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes.

At 19, when I began studying astrophysics(天体物理学), it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement—jobs, research papers, awards—was viewed from the angle of gender (性别) politics. So were my failures.

Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would finally become my reply to any and all provocations(挑衅): I don’t talk about that any more. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn’t want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don’t study sociology or political theory.

Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City.

Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don’t take no notice of those concerns. Still, I don’t tell them “war”stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that’s a sight worth talking about.

72. Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?

A. She feels unhappy working in the scientific field.

B. She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination.

C. She is not good at telling stories of the kind.

D. She finds space research more important.

73. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would think the author’s failures were due to ________.

A. the very fact that she is a woman

B. her involvement in gender politics

C. her over-confidence as a female astrophysicist

D. the burden she bears in a male-leading society

74. Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?

A. Female students no longer have to bother about gender issues.

B. Her students’ performance has brought back her confidence.

C. Her female students can do just as well as male students.

D. More female students are going in for science than before.

75. What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?

A. Women students needn’t have the concerns of her generation.

B. Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.

C. Women can balance a career in science and having a family.

D. Women now have fewer problems going in for a science career.

Reading Extensively or Reading Selectively?

Recently, the problem of how we should read has become a hot point under discussion in my class. Some students are fully convinced that they should read extensively. They hold that students cannot get a general view about the world without extensive reading. Furthermore, they insist that extensive reading can broaden their knowledge horizon.

Unlike those who hold the above view, others also have reasons to believe that reading selectively is efficient, which can not only save time but also enable them to have more time to digest what they have read. What ’s more, with too many kinds of books in the market, if reading without selection, the youth who still cannot tell the true from the false may be harmed greatly.

There is probably some truth in both arguments, but I prefer the latter one. It goes without saying that, as young students, we should choose those books which are suitable to our reading level. Without selection, our reading may become aimless and blind, which will be less efficient.
