M:OK,I watch people a lot.I do that when I travel.I've been to many countries such as Britain,Italy and Sweden. So I spend a lot of time at airports. While waiting for my flights,I watch people passing by and start my imagination. For example, the other day, when I was waiting for my flight to Greece,I saw a couple. They were buying magazines at that moment. They were not wearing business clothes, but the man was carrying a suitcase.Every few seconds, the woman looked around.I wondered if someone was following them.Perhaps they were running away and you know this reminded me of a story in the newspaper that day:a bank clerk stole on million pounds a week before and disappeared with his wife. There was a picture of them in the paper. The couple really looked like the wiz.Maybe I should stop them.Just then,I saw them say goodbye to each other, and the woman walked away.Well, sometimes I make mistakes like that. But I find things like that very useful for my writing.

A

The Cost of Higher Education

Individuals(个人)should pay for their higher education.

A university education is of huge and direct benefit to the individual.Graduates earn more than non-graduates.Meanwhile,social mobility is ever more dependent on having a degree. However, only some people have it.So the individual, not the taxpayers, should pay for it.There are pressing calls on the resources(资源)of the https://www.doczj.com/doc/728870418.html,ing taxpayers' money to help a small number of people to earn high incomes in the future is not one of them.

Full government funding(资助)is not very good for universities.Adam Smith worked in a Scottish university whose teachers lived off student fees.He knew and looked down upon 18th-century Oxford, where the academics lived comfortably off the income received from the government.Guaranteed salaries,Smith argued, were the enemy of hard work;and when the academics were lazy and incompetent, the students were similarly lazy.

If students have to pay for their education, they not only work harder, but also demand more from their teachers. And their teachers have to keep them satisfied. If that means taking teaching seriously, and giving less time to their own research interests, that is surely something to celebrate.

Many people believe that higher education should be free because it is good for the economy(经济).Many graduates clearly do contribute to national wealth, but so do all the businesses that invest(投资)and create jobs.If you believe that the government should pay for higher education because graduates are economically productive, you should also believe that the government should pay part of business costs.Anyone promising to create jobs should receive a gift of capital from the government to invest.

Therefore,it is the individual, not the government, who should pay for their university education.

56.The underlined word“them”in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.

A.taxpayers B.pressing calls

C.college graduates D.government resources

57.The author thinks that with full government funding ________.

A.teaching are less satisfied

B.students are more demanding

C.students will become more competent

D.teachers will spend less time on teaching

58.The author mentions businesses in Paragraph 5 in order to ________.

A.argue against free university education

B.call on them to finance students' studies

C.encourage graduates to go into business

D.show their contribution to higher education

[答案]A

B

(2010·浙江高考)My family and I lived across the street from Southway park since I was four years old. Then just last year the city put a chain link fence around the park and started bulldozing(用推土机推平)the trees and grass to make way for a new apartment complex. When I saw the fence and bulldozers,I asked myself,“Why don't they just leave it alone?”

Looking back,I think what sentenced the park to oblivion(被遗忘)was the drought(旱灾)we had about four years ago.Up until then,Southway Park was a nice green park with plenty of trees and a public swimming pool.My friends and I rollerskated on the sidewalks, climbed the trees, and swam in the pool all the years I was growing up.The park was almost like my own yard. Then the summer I was fifteen the drought came and things changed.

There had been almost no rain at all that year. The city stopped watering the park grass.Within a few weeks I found myself living across the street from a huge brown desert.Leaves fell off the park trees, and pretty soon the trees started dying, too.Next, the park swimming pool was closed. The city cut down on the work force that kept the park, and pretty soon it just got too ugly and dirty to enjoy anymore.

As the drought lasted into the fall, the park got worse every month. The rubbish piled up or blew across the brown grass.Soon the only people in the park were beggars and other people down on their luck.People said drugs were being sold or traded there now.The park had gotten scary, and my mother told us kids not to go there anymore.

The drought finally ended and things seemed to get back to normal, that is,everything but the

park.It had gotten into such bad shape that the city just let it stay that way. Then about six months ago I heard that the city was going to“redevelop”certain worn-out areas of the city.It turned out that the city had planned to get rid of the park, sell the land and let someone build rows of apartment buildings on it.

The chain-link fencing and the bulldozers did their work. Now we live across the street from six rows of apartment buildings. Each of them is three units high and stretches a block in each direction. The neighborhood has changed without the park. The streets I used to play in are jammed with cars now.Things will never be the same again.Sometimes_I_wonder,though,what_changes_another_drought_would_make_in_the_way_things_are_today.

59.How did the writer feel when he saw the fence and bulldozers?

A.Scared. B.Confused.

C.Upset. D.Curious.

根据文章第一段尾句“I asked myself,‘Why don't they just leave it alone?’”

60.Why was the writer told not to go to the park by his mother?

A.It was being rebuilt.

B.It was dangerous.

C.It became crowded.

D.It had turned into a desert.

61.According to the writer, what eventually brought about the disappearance of the park?

A.The drought.

B.The crime.

C.The beggars and the rubbish.

D.The decisions of the city.

62.The last sentence of the passage implies that if another drought came,________.

A.the situation would be much worse

B.people would have to desert their homes

C.the city would be fully prepared in advance

D.the city would have to redevelop the neighborhood

[答案]A

C

(2010·安徽皖南八校第二次联考) A well-made film offers a whole world of things to watch. First there are the story aspects—the plot, characters, dialogue and themes. Then there are the technical aspects—the camera work, cuttings and special effects. And there are many other things, like the credits, musical score and the acting. A well-made film offers much more than you see in one viewing.

Films are a means of communication. They can tell you things, just as newspapers do,or television,or any other means of communication. Sometimes they communicate important things to you, like ideas or lifestyles or ways of looking at the world. Sometimes people are aware of this, and sometimes not. The more you are aware of this, the better you are.

Notice, for example, the way films sometimes affect fashion. A star dresses or wears her hair in a certain way,and suddenly everyone is imitating her. Boys in the 1950s could sometimes be seen wearing black leather jackets, idling (闲逛) on street corners and smoking cigarettes. They were imitating Marion Brando. His films taught them a certain way to behave.

Films can also teach politics. In Star Wars, the heroes were a bunch of lovable incompetents fighting with guts(胆量) and not much else. They were,in fact, rather like the British in the early days of WWⅡ.Their enemies, like the Nazis, had a big advantage in equipment and numbers of troops, and they were like the Nazis in discipline and heartlessness too. The whole film, in fact, was a rerun of WWⅡ,and taught values like faith and love of liberty. This is all to the good, but the point is, did you notice it?

67. All of the following are mentioned as noticeable aspects of a film EXCEPT________.

A. the list of names of actors and directors, etc.

B. the cost of a film

C. the music for a film

D. the language used in a film

68.The last sentence in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.

A. a high quality film can be appreciated repeatedly from different angles

B. a good film always attracts a lot of viewers

C. a well-made film usually has more than one theme

D. one can never find out how many characters there are in a good film

[答案]A

69.It can be inferred from the passage that in his film,Marion Brando was ________.

A. a motorist who always wore a black leather jacket

B. a homeless man who died of excessive smoking

C. a rebellious man during WWⅡ

D. an idler who didn't have any serious things to do

70.Star Wars is a film________.

A. about WWⅡ

B. for politics

C. reflecting WWⅡ

D. for peace lovers

Dear Mr. Zhang,

We have held a discussion about whether it is good or not for a top student to share a desk with a slower student.

Li Ping [答案]

One possible version:

Dear_Mr._Zhang,

We_have_held_a_discussion_about_whether_it_is_good_or_not_for_a_top_student_to_share _a_desk_with_a_slower_student.

Some are for the idea. As they know, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although they are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports or arts. Therefore, they can learn from each other, and they may develop friendship. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons, which benefits them all.

However, others don't hold the same view. They think some slower students are always making trouble, such as keeping talking in class, breaking school rules, which may lead to them forming bad habits. Besides, slower students often ask top students questions, which has a bad effect on their studies.

In my opinion, I'd like to choose to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each other and make progress together.

Yours,

Li_Ping

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture. The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the centre of national

2012届高考英语二轮专题总复习阅读理解精选(三) A AMSTERDAM (AP)-She’s not afraid of pirates(海盗). She’s packed plenty of school books. And she’s going to miss her family and her dog, Spot. Fourteen-year-old Laura Dekker jumped onto her boat Wednesday and sailed off from the Netherlands hoping to become the youngest person to make a voyage around the world by herself. About 100 supporters waved as Laura and her father Dick Dekker left the southern Dutch harbor of Den Osse in her 11.5-meter-long sailing boat Guppy, for Portugal wh ere she plans to leave her father and begin her attempt to travel around the world. Last week, Laura won a legal battle when a court released her from the guardianship(监护) of Dutch child protection agencies. They had blocked her initial plan to depart at age 13 over fears for her safety and psychological health during the trip, which will likely take around a year. “I can be sailing now, and that’s great!”she told reporters Wednesday. Laura raised the black Jolly Roger-like flag of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society above the two red masts(桅杆) before sailing out. Laura, who was born on a sailing boat off the coast of New Zealand, has been working to counter objections to her voyage since the authorities stepped in last year. She got a bigger, stronger boat, took courses in first aid and practiced coping with sleep deprivation(缺乏).She also made at least one trip by herself across the North Sea to England. The Dutch court ruled that Laura’s preparations were adequate and it was up to her parents, who are divorced, to decide whether to let her make the attempt. Her mother, Babs Mueller, recently withdrew(撤销) her opposition to the plan. Dekker’s case has fueled a global debate over the wisdom of allowing ever-younger sailors to take on the great risks of sailing the high seas alone. 1.How did Laura feel when she was setting off?
