(Text 1)

W:It's pouring outside. My new jacket got all wet.

M:Take it off and let me hang it up.

W:Thanks. I hope the rain didn't hurt it. It's a new jacket, you know. M:It's a nice jacket. I think it'll be OK when it is dry.

(Text2)

M:You lost your job at the library? Oh, no! What will you do now?

W:I think I'll just take a vacation.

M:What will you do then?

W:I'll worry about that later.

(Text 3)

M:What did you do after high school?

W:I played in a band for a while. We played for dances around the country.

M:Then what did you do?

W:I started a recording company. Now I make music and money.

(Text 4)

M:This pen costs 11 dollars, but I've only got 7 dollars.

W:I've got 6 dollars, so I'll lend you the rest.

(Text 5)

W:If Lisa doesn't return my car in 15 minutes' time, I'm afraid we're going to be late for the baseball game.

M:Would you like me to get a taxi for you?

(Text 6)

W:Can you help me, Sir?

M:What seems to be the trouble?

W:There is something wrong with my bike. Brake, chain or something else?

M:Oh, your wheels seem to have become loose. That's dangerous. Without good wheels, accidents are more likely to happen. You'd better have them repaired as soon as possible.

W:Where can I find a repairman?

M:There's one at the corner of the street, just next to the post office. It is about 150 metres away.

W:Thank you, Sir.

M:You're welcome.

(Text 7)

W:What time is it now?

M:Let me look at my watch. Oh, it's nine-thirty already.

W:Though today is Saturday, it's time for us to get up, or we'll have a really late breakfast.

M:We can have brunch in a Chinese restaurant for a change.

W:What is brunch?

M:It's a meal between breakfast and lunch. Many people prefer brunch on Saturdays.

W:All right. Come on. You don't have to wear that much. It's warm today, much warmer than yesterday.

M:How do you know?

W:I listened to the weather forecast on TV last night.

(Text 8)

W:I feel like doing something tonight. How about going to a movie?

M:That's a good idea. What's on tonight?

W:Which do you prefer? Chinese pictures or foreign ones?

M:Well, I think I prefer foreign, especially literary ones such as Gone w ith the Wind, The Red and Black.

W:They are old but wonderful. I like them too.

M:But what do you think of the actress and actor in Gone w ith the Wind?

W:What an excellent pair!

M:Yes, I think so. Shall we go to see Blue Horizons? I heard it was wonderful and we shouldn't miss it.

W:Are Sophia Bellini and Richard Evans the leading actress and actor in it?

M:Yeah, they are.

W:Great! Those two are so smart that it must be worth seeing.

M:It's certain that it is. Let's go.

(Text 9)

M:Cindy! Have you heard the news?

W:No, Steve. What do you mean?

M:You know all the classes we've missed because of the snow? We're going to have to make them up and it will have to be during spring break.

W:Oh, no! We have our vacation all set! What are we going to do? Do the others

know that?

M:I don't know but I certainly can't afford to miss five days of classes this term.

W:But I really don't want to cancel our trip. All of us have already booked our plane tickets!

M:I can try to call the travel agency; maybe they can return our money. But before we do anything we need to speak with our professors.

W:You think they'll excuse us from class?

M:I don't know. But I think we're going to have to speak to all of them anyway.

W:Why didn't they add extra days at the end of the term before summer classes?

M:Because of the graduation date, which can't be changed!

W:Are other colleges around here doing the same thing?

M:I would imagine so! It has been such a bad winter and we've missed too many classes. We really need to make them up.

W:I know, I know. I was just really looking forward to this vacation. The idea of the sun and the beach!

M:Oh, look, there's Professor Hampton right now!

W:Come on, let's go and talk to him.

(Text 10)

Hello, everyone. I'd like to tell you something about the student clubs in our school. Let's begin with our reading club. It was first started in 1968, and has 90 members now. Every Thursday afternoon, they gather together to exchange their ideas on books. And you may join them to share your views. If you are a music lover, come to our music club. This club has a total of 85 members who usually meet on Saturday. Sometimes they go to the concerts together and sometimes they give performances themselves. For those who enjoy outdoor sports, the bicycle club can be a good choice. Trips are usually organized on Wednesday and last at least two hours. Together with 50 cyclists, you can not only see the beautiful nature, but also make yourself stronger. Of course, there are also many other clubs in our school. For more information, please go to the school website.

In a recent announcement, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)said that they have joined forces to offer free online courses in an effort to attract millions of online learners worldwide.

Beginning this fall, a number of courses developed by teachers at both universities will be offered online through a new $60 million program, known as edX. “Anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world can use our online courses,”Harvard President Drew Faust said during a meeting to announce the plan.

MIT has offered a program called OpenCourseWare for ten years that makes materials from more than 2,000 classes free online. It has been used by more than 100 million people. In December, the school announced it also would begin offering a special certificate, known as MITx, for people who complete certain online courses. Harvard has long offered courses to a wider population through a similar program.

The MITx will serve as the foundation for the new learning platform.

MIT President Susan Hockfield said more than 120,000 people signed up for the first MITx course. She said Harvard and MIT hope other universities will join them in offering courses on the opensource edX platform.

“Fasten_your_seatbelts,”Hockfield said.

Other universities, including Stanford, Yale and CarnegieMellon, have been experimenting with teaching to a global population online.

The HarvardMIT program will be monitored by a notforprofit(非盈利的)organization based in Cambridge, to be owned equally by the two universities. Both MIT and Harvard have provided $30 million to start the program. They also plan to use the edX platform to research how students learn and which teaching methods and tools are most successful.

B

About 21,000 young people in 17 American states do not attend classes in school buildings. Instead, they receive their elementary (初等) and high school education by working at home on computers. The Center for Education Reform says the United States has 67 public “cyberschools”,and that is about twice as many as two years ago.

The money for students to attend a cyberschool comes from the governments of the states where they live. Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools. They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.

Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools. They say learning at home by computer ends long bus rides for children who live far from school.

Whatever the judgment of cyberschools, they are getting more and more popular. For example, a new cyberschool called Commonwealth Connections Academy will take in students this fall. It will serve children in the state of Pennsylvania from ages five through thirteen.

Children get free equipment for their online education. This includes a computer, a printer, books and technical services. Parents and students talk with teachers by telephone or by sending emails through their computers when necessary.

Students at cyberschools usually do not know one another. But 56 such students who finished studies at Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School recently met for the first time. They were guests of honor at their graduation.

60.What do we know from the text about students of a cyberschool?

A. They have to take long bus rides to school.

B.They study at home rather than in classrooms.

C. They receive money from traditional public schools.

D. They do well in traditional school programs.

61.What is a problem with cyberschools?

A. Their equipment costs a lot of money.

B.They get little support from the state government.

C. It is hard to know students' progress in learning.

D. The students find it hard to make friends.

62.Cyberschools are getting popular because ________.

A. they are less expensive for students

B.their students can work at their own speed

C. their graduates are more successful in society

D. they serve students in a wider age range

63.We can infer that the author of the text is ________.

A. unprejudiced in his description of cyberschools

B.excited about the future of cyberschools

C. doubtful about the quality of cyberschools

D. disappointed at the development of cyberschools

根据第一段第二句“Instead, they receive their elementary and high school education by working at home on computers.”

根据第二段最后一句“They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.”

根据第三段第一句“Other educators praise this new form of education for letti ng students work at their own speed.”

根据第二段第二句“Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools.”和第三段前两句“Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools.”以及对cyberschools(网络学校)其他情况的客观描述,可以推断出,A项符合题意。

glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep https://www.doczj.com/doc/7a8377759.html,ually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD, Insanity.Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes.My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired ,but a smile is on my face. It's not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit.

Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town.Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother's chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,”or by my choice to have a salad.Over the years, I have learned it's okay to just say “no.” I shouldn't feel sorry for refusing food that I don't want to eat.

So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment.A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases selfconfidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It's through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.

64.Why is there a smile on the author's face in the morning?

A.Because she sees her family sleeping peacefully.

B.Because she finishes her favorite exercise.

C.Because she enjoys the interesting DVD.

D.Because she feels a sense of achievement.

67.What can we learn about the author from the text?

A.She acts in a strange way.

B.She wants to look different from others.

C.She aims to develop a good body shape.

D.She has difficulty getting along with others.

由第一段最后一句“...a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit.”

由第二段的“They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,”or by my choice to have a salad.”

由下句对commitment的解释“A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases selfconfidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape.”

由最后一段的“...and above all improves my body shape”可知作者的锻炼是为了保持良好的体型。

Inside the pleasingly fragrant cafe,So All May Eat (SAME) in downtown Denver, the spirit of generosity (慷慨) is instantly noticeable:A donation box stands in place of a cash register.Customers here pay only what they can afford,no questions asked.

A risky business plan, perhaps, but SAME Cafe has done one unchangeable thing in the Mile High City for six years:Open only at midday, the restaurant provides poor local people with healthy, delicious lunches six days a week. Those unable to pay for their meals can instead volunteer as waiters and waitresses, and dishwashers,or look after the buildings and equipment for the cafe.

“It's based on trust, and it's working all right,”says coowner Brad Birky, who started the cafe in 2006 with his wife Libby. Previously volunteering at soup

kitchens, the Birkys were dissatisfied with the often unhealthy meals they served there.

“We wanted to offer quality food in a restaurant where everyone felt comfortable, regardless of their circumstances,”Birky says.SAME's special lunch menu changes daily and most food materials are natural and grown by local farmers.

The cafe now averages 65 to 70 customers (and eight volunteers) a day.And the spirit of generosity behind the project appears to be spreading. In early 2007,one volunteer who had cleared snow for his meals during the long winter said goodbye to the Birkys.“He said he was going to New Orleans to help with the hurricane cleanup,”says Birky.

68.What can we learn about the soup kitchens the Birkys previously worked for?

A.They refused to have volunteers.

B.They offered low quality food.

C.They provided customers with a good environment.

D.They closed down because of poor management.

69.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.The customers who cannot pay can work as volunteers instead.

B.More volunteers will go to New Orleans for the hurricane cleanup.

C.Many new cafes will be opened to offer free lunches in the town.

D.The lunch menu has remained the same since the cafe was started.

70.The author's attitude towards running such a cafe is ________.

A.unfavorable B.approving

C.doubtful D.cautious

从第三段最后一句“...the Birkys were dissatisfied with the often unhealthy meals they served there.”

从第二段的“Those unable to pay for their meals can instead volunteer as waiters and waitresses, and dishwa shers...” B、C两项未提及;从第四段的“SAME's special lunch menu changes daily...”

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture. The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the centre of national

There is no doubt that ...(毫无疑问)结构。 的用法,易考点为该短语位于句首作状语和作后置定语两点,考生应能掌握be absorbed by(为某事物所吸引);还应联系be engaged in, be devoted to, be involved in和be lost in等常见重点近义短语。 4. apart from apart from是常见介词短语,意为“除……之外”,考生应熟练掌握近义的词和短语:except, besides, in addition (to), other than, except for, except that, except when等。 be available to意为“可利用的”,be available for意为“使……可以享受某物;使……买得起某物”, 要了解二者的区别。 预测2010年高考命题会以考查词义或者形容词短语作后置定语为命题方向。 6. consist of consist of是近几年高考高频考查短语。 如be made up of, be composed of, constitute, be formed of 等。 break down,break up, break off, break away, break in等,都要求考生熟知它们的常见义项,因为 命题时可能会对该短语直接考查,也可在短文中考查对其意义的理解。 _____ vt.&vi. _____ vt.& n. 治愈;痊愈→______adj. _____ vt. 吸收;吸引;使专心→______adj. _____ adj. 严重的;严厉的;剧烈的 characteristic 2. conclude;conclusion 3. defeat 4. attend;attendance 5. expose;exposure 6. cure;curable 7. control 8. absorb;absorbed 9. severe 10. _____ vt. 宣布;通告→______n. _____ vt.&vi. 捐献;贡献;捐助→______n.
