Read the following two paragraphs with contradicting views, and write a passage on the issue. You should clearly state your opinion and explain the reasons for your opinion. You should write about 500 words.

Tablets are the ideal system of organization in schools. They are convenient, in which much information is stored in small sizes and kept together in one place, and cheap, as digital information is now becoming more affordable than print. As evolution continues to rock the modern world, digital devices will become more and more reliable. Someday, they will entirely replace print books, and hopefully, that day will come soon.

Many may argue that tablets are much more convenient than paper books. But not everyone shares this preference of tablets or finds them convenient. In fact, in a study conducted by Book Industry Study Group (BISG), it was found that 75% of college students preferred traditional textbooks in which they can highlight the key words and write notes. Also, some may suggest that it is cheaper to invest in tablets than textbooks. In fact, in a 2008 study of public schools in Kentucky it was estimated that the cost of textbooks and supplies totaled around $44 million. The cost per school was around $988 for textbooks and supplies. That is roughly the cost of only two tablets. To provide tablets to all the students in a school would be an enormous sum. Therefore, we may conclude that while tablets have their purposes, they should not replace the printed books used in schools.

Nowadays there is a trend that digital devices are occupying an increasing number of market shares of educational business, a typical example of which can be tablets in colleges. Nevertheless, from my own perspective, tablets do not have advantages over paper books, which has also been proved by some studies. In fact, traditional textbooks possess a lot more merits than tablets in various aspects.

Initially, concerning the assistance to study, print books enable us to output what we have learned timely such as underlining the critical points and taking notes during the learning process. While with tablets, it is not convenient for us to write down our inspiration though they can store a large amount of information. Additionally, due to their multifunction, tablets will distract our attention more easily, which is fatal to a person’s study process. Such a typical phenomenon is that new games always spread faster through pads than any other devices, keeping the youths from concentrating on

their study. Since the essence of study is the exchange and collision of ideas, paper books apparently weigh heavier than tablets for they can provide such a platform where students can place much more emphasis on learning.

In terms of the investment, not only the cost but also the repair fees of tablets are rather high. At the same time, with the software continuously being renovated, tablets set higher requirements on technology. For instance, schools usually face difficulties in collecting sufficient information and making effective management of so many of them in such a small device, which can only be dealt with by renewing the software. In brief, limited budget will restrict tablets’ popularization to a large extent while it can promise the paper books’supply.

Another problem lies in the impact on health. There is no doubt that students’loss of vision is closely attached to the exposure to lots of digital devices, one of which is tablet. Besides, it has been wildly accepted that the electromagnetic radiation from tablets is detrimental to our physical body. By comparison, print textbooks act as a more protective role in our study career because the unadorned paper will not do harm to us.

There is no denying that the invention of digital devices has brought a revolution to the study methods, converting people’s preference from conventional paper into convenient smart devices. However, it has to be identified that development is a process, whose basic responsibility is ameliorating living pressure and promoting life quality. We have taken a wide range of factors into account, only to find that traditional books have irreplaceable advantages not merely in pursuing the essence of learning but in maintaining healthy as well. Therefore, public introspection on how to balance technology and tradition should be aroused by this controversial issue. Fortunately enough, some people who foresee the disadvantages have also made attempt to keep themselves from too many digital products and eventually showed appreciation for such a healthy lifestyle.

It is we students who make the final decisions. Consequently, only when we make a better understanding of both tablets and traditional textbooks comprehensively can we truly reap the benefits from these two learning tools. Since what really matters is whether it can be helpful to our learning careers, I prefer paper books for the reasons presented above."

Tablets Serves More for Students in School

Tablets are enjoying increasing popularity in school. One can always grasp shadows of tablets wherever he is, in classrooms or in the dining halls. Admittedly, the evolution of technology has rocked the world; however, there are indeed doubts on the growing vogue of tablets. Some people approve of them because of their convenience, others oppose and claim that students should use printed books and they will never be replaced. Nevertheless, as a significant progress made in digital time, tablets and E-reading are more likely favored by students and serve more in their school life.

Initially, tablets are more convenient than printed books. Other than just being a smaller-sized text, it is more of a portable database, in which one can not only read the whole content just as it is with the paper book, but also search for information about the background knowledge as well as the reviews, as Wi-Fi is more commonly used nowadays and tablets are able to connect to it. Also, for students who are eager to get the latest news or the new versions whether they are the requirements from the teacher or just their own interests, tablets provide with an access to every update while printed books fail to do so. Compared with a bag full of books that weighs more than 6 kilos in total, more students certainly tend to prefer to use the lighter tablets with more convenience.

In addition, electronic-reading is cheaper and that version of books is easy to preserve for really a long time. Other than just test books, most colleges require extra class materials (such as classic novels for an English class) and reference books, and the average cost for books and supplies for the 2012-2013 school year was about $1,200 at universities in the US, according to a report from the College Board. Although the price for books in China is much lower, it still counts greatly in students’tuition fee. Compared with paper books we have to buy continuously, a tablet costs only for approximately $499, with free digital information or e-books with great price, which is cheaper in the long run.

Preservation is also problematic for paper books. It might be Okay if we are talking about a student or two; however, preservation of some specific books or historic records which are significant is important to schools. Proper handling and storage is essential to the preservation, not to mention a whole series of complicated packing and selection for places that is neither humid nor shady. However, books can be preserved in tablets easily without so many considerations. Librarians just have to create a database, which professors and students can have access to, and prepare for couple of computers or tablets for public use.

Admittedly, paper-reading has a long history and is accepted by most people; however, its negative impacts cannot be neglected, and the environmental problems it has brought about are definitely one of them, which have led to a high level of consumption and waste. According to a survey, nearly 4 billion trees worldwide are cut down each year, not to mention the air and water pollution. Also, few books will be recycled, which lead to a great amount of waste. However, the tablets can be used for quite a long time if the users use it properly, and the information can be update in time with lower cost.

The using of tablets in schools has really become a hit because of their convenience, abundant storage of information, and lower cost for information to be both read and preserved. In addition, it avoids the problem of waste and pollution paper book might cause, which not only benefit individuals, but also the society as a whole. More importantly, using tablets is a sign for

the bloom of digital system of organizations in schools, and also the coming era of technology. Perhaps there is a day that all paper-books will be replaced by e-books stored in digital devices, and the storm of high-tech will blow almost everyone’s mind."

Printed Book or E-book, Which Is to Succeed?

Since the beginning of human history, printed books have accompanied us for quite a long time. They have been used to pass on culture, knowledge and history from one generation to the next, and they have never been denied of their functions. In recent years, however, with the rapid development of e-books, many people voice that printed books are no longer useful, thus should be replaced by e-books. On the contrary, I hold the view that printed books should never be replaced. The reasons are as follows.

As printed books have played a glorious throughout history, they are mostly known as textbooks, on which there are printed articles, formulas for students to learn. Some of printed books are heavy, and not easy to carry, though, they are convenient for students to take notes and easy for them to review at any time when they open the book. But learners with e-books are impossible to write down notes on pages, so they may need extra notebooks during classes. What's more, there are already many versions of every kind of printed books, from which people can choose the one best suits their need, while only one version is accessible online for most of the time, and if readers want another version, they will be charged for extra fees, which, sometimes, even higher than a printed one.

Some people argue that printed books are a waste of trees and e-books are environmental-friendly. I don't agree. I believe that one won't throw a book away after reading it, instead, most people choose to put it off the bookshelf and refer to it when necessary. In fact, it's a tradition to keep as many books at home as possible in a traditional Chinese family, because it shows that the family members are knowledgeable and intelligent and earns them respect from neighbors. Yet, I've also seen that in modern groups, especially among college students, second-hand books are in. Many students sell used printed books at very low prices, both maximizing the use of the book and realizing the mutual benefit of sellers and buyers.

Printed books, frankly speaking, are much cheaper compared to the money one has to pay for electronic devices in order to use e-books. For example, high quality products are expensive, which can be a burden to ordinary families. But once poor quality ones are broken, books will all disappear at once and they need requirements frequently, which, also means a large sum of money. In addition, with e-books, one will take much time to upload new systems and update new procedures so that the device can function properly and keep pace with the world.

Although e-books are becoming more and more popular, other problems like eyesight protection remain to be solved. Therefore, in this era of rapid development of science and technology, printed books, having survived for thousands of years, will continue to play an important part and succeed in the end."

Write a passage in response to the report below. You should discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the report and explain your reasons for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the report’s opinion might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. You should write about 500 words.

Newsweek, the venerable weekly publication that will be remembered for its decades-long efforts for a spot on consumers’coffee tables, has shut down its print edition at the end of 2012, but it lives on in a new digital tablet edition known as Newsweek Global. As Tina Brown, the Newsweek editor, said, this tablet edition will target a “new highly mobile, opinion-leading audience who want to learn about world events in a sophisticated context.”

The move should not shock. The publication has faced major financial problems in recent years. The numbers tell the tale: Newsweek’s circulation has fallen in the number of subscribers from 3 million to 1.5 million in the last decade; annual losses were thought to be $40 million. More broadly, the company faces a more existential problem in that a “weekly news”magazine has become an anachronism in the digital world.

Newsweek is not the only one that has to tackle the challenge in the digital time; other outlets will continue to change their business models for a digital future. With the “imminent death”of print, digital formats come out as an inevitable development that could turn the industry’s fortune around.

With the staggering advancement of the information technology, there is an increasing number of people converting their preference to the digital publication instead of subscribing to the printed one to acquire information or knowledge. To reverse the economic downturn, multitudes of news outlets commence to bring out the digital edition publication and smother the printed publication. Although digital publication is very prevalent nowadays, the news outlets can’t only pursue economic interests and ignore the irreplaceable role of the printed publication. For my perspective, I harbor the view that the printed publication is supposed to be regained.

On the one hand, it merits our attention that recovering the printed publication, serving as an indispensable complement for the digital publication, enables more people to obtain information. Firstly, it is more convenient for people dwelling in remote areas. As is known to us, the public publication needs to satisfy the demands of the whole readers instead of only those who live in metropolises, who are well-educated and very familiar with digital gadgets. In fact, there are plentiful people living in the mountainous or impoverished areas where the Internet is not available. If all the publications are converted into the digital editions, they will have no access to gain the information and finally will be isolated by the information-based society. What’s more, the printed publication is more beneficial to children and senior people. It is universally acknowledged that the quantity of senior people and children account for a significant percent all over the world. Without printed publications, they will lose an available and accessible channel to obtain the information, since the digital gadget is just like a closed book to them. Therefore, the printed publication plays a pivotal role in their daily life. Only by this can the information resources be shared around the world. Without it, a multitude of people would have been alienated

by society of information explosion. From this perspective, the printed publication still has a substantial market share and the news outlets can earn an absolute fortune.

On the other hand, There is no denying fact that the printed publication is more suitable for readers to have a good comprehension of information, resonate with the writer and preserve some valuable and precious passages. Initially, some people are accustomed to underlining key words or pivotal sentences and making marks or comments in the margin, which is paramount to their mastery of information. Also, some people have a passion for printed publication, since they harbor a sort of attachment to it; they enjoy the delighted sense of fingers dancing over the pages. Only when they read the printed edition, can they easily have an empathy with the authors and the marks of that era. Notably, these benefits are what the digital publication definitely can’t provide. Furthermore, Not like digital publication, printed publication can supply readers with the permanent information that is convenient to be preserved. By contrast, the content of the digital publication updates every day. Once the passage is read, it will be deleted immediately. Thus, if someday you need the information that have been removed to conduct researches, you will have no access to trace it.

Admittedly, the digital publication actually has its inherent merit of convenience. More importantly, it can bring the news outlets more economic profits, thereby, turning the stranded situation confronted by the press circle. Nevertheless, the printed publication still can bring considerable profits, if the content and layout are created more attractive, if the delivery service is enforced, if the productivity is raised to abate the price of the printed publication. Moreover, the press circle should consider spreading information as its fundamental duty and shouldn’t just fix eyes on economic benefits as its only purpose. The press outlets is committed to bear the social responsibility to illustrate their conscience.

Taking what has been analyzed into the consideration, we can naturally and reasonably reach the conclusion that allowing for the printed publication’s universality and the suitability, the printed publication should be recovered. It’s not an advisable move to shut it down. To meet the demands of all people and have a distinctly competitive advantage, the news outlets should bring out both printed publication and digital edition, hence, profiting a lot from it , and more importantly, manifesting the conscience.

With the advent of digital products, mobile phone in particular, in the nearly three decades, they have brought enormous changes to ordinary people’s access to information, knowledge and matters. Decades have witnessed radical transition of print business towards a digital future. Newsweek, one of the most remarkable weekly publications in the United States, for instance, has adopted a new digital tablet edition for its long-term development in years to come. A number of critics, however, regard this behavior as a damage to traditional print business, while a majority of readers and publishers show affection for this digital transition. In my perspective, the merits of this tablet edition outweigh its demerits considering the rapid social development.

For the sake of business model, on the one hand, it is desirable for publishers to instantly adjust their present print edition in a digital way. Due to the fact that mobile phones and other digital products have being exerting a significant influence on people’s life, publishers should be aware of the tendency from the print edition towards the tablet one. On the other hand, this

traditional print edition has not actually kept up pace with the rapid development of technology. As we know, the original print editions, such as Newsweek, regularly come out once a week, resulting in merely outdated information accessible to the public. With the help of various digital products, however, people can easily get access to meaning information as pleased. And thus consumers may not be obliged to purchase these printed magazines or journals. Consequently, there is an increasing fall on the circulation of publications, triggering fierce challenges in finance to the survival of most presses. In order to adapt themselves well to changeable consuming market, presses have to exploit creative methods to appeal to readers’appetite.

Then, whether this tablet edition is accepted in the end largely depends on its consumers, namely these readers. They play a decisive part in the extent to which the print edition is replaced by the tablet one. According to a recent survey conducted by the United States, the proportion of the people who own a smart phone has reached 83.4 percent. In an information exploration era, people, whether you are educated or not, are exposed to various news from various ways. It is unnecessary to say that readers, particularly younger ones, tend to be obsessed with the latest digital products and keen to obtain information in a sophisticated context. Thus, apparently, an overwhelming number of readers are for this digital transition and tend to engage themselves into this tablet edition owing to its great convenience and timeliness. Readers in contemporary society are committed to instant information attractive to them. Despite the fact that the old may have been used to the print edition, this seems to be a minor proportion. Most people will not bother to collect outdated news by means of purchasing weekly journals, which they think is a waste to money. Meanwhile, readers nowadays pursue an enjoyable experience while reading materials, which requires presses to design their publications in a compulsive way rather than passages one by one with several irrelevant pictures. Nevertheless, there are times when people prefer skimming to scanning. Exactly, this tablet edition can effectively transform these dull ways of reading with movable pictures and outlines and thus satisfy people’s needs to read in a creative way. As a result, a growing number of readers show little interest in reading publications in the form of the print edition, which to some extent encourages the digital transition in publishing field.

In sum, with the imminent death of pint, it is obvious that this tablet edition is a manifestation to the long-term development of publications. Newsweek’s innovative move can both rejuvenate itself from financial challenges and bring benefits, convenience as well as inspiration to readers. In a rapidly developing society with digital progress, the tendency from the print edition towards the tablet one will truly turn out to a wise and rewarding choice. Only by targeting their consumers’interests can an industry go a long way.

Post Online or Perish

Newspapers, originally derived from literature handouts focusing on ironical and sarcastic criticism of the society, have been through ups and downs in the past two hundred years. It has enjoyed great popularity especially in times of social revolution or radical political disputes. Social media expend their tentacles to get the imminent and instant news, supplying the consumers with timely and informative events going around the world. Modern technology

prompts the coming of newspaper publications, and at the same time, also throws it into a crucial existential deadlock in the era of digital devices. This is a time that calls for change. And the Newsweek is the one which dares to change its business models when its cheese is moved away. Needless to say, it has set a positive and encouraging example to other outlets.

There are several reasons underlying Newsweek’s revolutionary measure of breaking its publication deadlock and resorting to posting its publications online.

First and foremost, digital format is economical. For the last two decades, Newsweek has been losing its money since the number of subscribers slashes year after year. It is trapped in financial crisis. While digital format consumes no paper or ink, nor does it involve enormous publication work or human resources.

Next, it is convenient. Where mobile phone and internet service are accessible, there will always be news readily available even. You can read the news when you are bored, idle or basically have nothing else to do. For example, while waiting for the bus, queuing in the line, taking the subway and so on, you will be engulfed by news of digital formats as long as you get into the digital world by simply pushing or clicking the button of your smart phone.

Last but not least, it is highly timely. Generally speaking, normal printed newspapers appear mainly weekly or daily, while digital format is able to update 24 hours a day. The minute an event or an accident occurs, the next minute a piece of news comes into being. Then people get to learn about the news and they will be kept well-informed with following series of detailed reports.

As we can see, the advantages of digital format are self-evident, since the editors make their life-changing decision to put their publications online, gambling the fortune over potential risks. In a world infused with environmental problems, digitalized products are undoubtedly energy-saving and environmental-friendly. Mores trees will be preserved because of the fall of paper need in the publication industry. Less waste paper would pollute the natural surroundings since people no longer consume printed papers. Digital format also compiles with the growing number of net citizens. It will satisfy the educated citizens as well as intellectuals and social elites who may be interested in global events or even correlate their work with world news.

Digitalization is characteristic of currency society. Anything that fails to conform to the trend or flow of society is doomed to be discarded. Newspapers will not be an exception. Traditional printed papers ought to find a new position and a redefined appearance for themselves in the changing wind and shift sand of modern society. As Darwin once wrote in his masterpiece The Origin of Species, advocating “survival of the fittest”, printed outlets should also strengthen themselves and transform their dwindling and weakening situation so as to meet the need of the time.

This is no longer a time of “publish or perish”, but a time of “post online or perish”.

Write a passage to introduce the Chinese Moon Festival to foreigners. You should write about 500 words.

Chinese Moon Festival

As is known to all the Chinese people, Moon Festival, a traditional and significant festival in China, enjoys an official appellation, Mid-autumn Festival. Moreover, it has become one of the Chinese legal holidays in due form when Chinese people can share a three-day holiday on account of this national policy. Mid-autumn Festival falls on August 15th of lunar calendar when the moon acquires its full illumination. As Mid-autumn Festival is approaching, I am introducing it to you with the cultural knowledge lying in the following parts.

The night in Mid-autumn Festival can be one of the most picturesque nights during a year and the full moon is an auspicious symbol of abundance, satisfaction and luck, as Chinese people can look back on the past and look forward to the future. For thousands of years, Chinese people have linked the vicissitudes of life to the changes of the moon, reunion and separation, joy and sorrow. As the moon is supposed to be at its maximum roundness and brightness for the entire year, it always arouses many poets’and lovers’inspiration and affection. Perhaps that’s why the moon spins countless legends throughout ages and Chinese ancient literature takes far more interest in the moon than in the sun.

The moon cake is the exclusive food in Mid-autumn Festival. There’re diverse kinds of moon cakes, such as nut, egg-yolk, meat and so on. Its round shape symbolizes the big and bright moon. Chinese people always present moon cakes to their relatives and friends as a gift to show greeting and blessing. The moon cake is to Mid-autumn Festival what Zongzi is to Dragon Boat Festival.

Enjoying the full moon is an essential activity in Mid-autumn Festival. It is generally believed that the moon gains its full size during this night. After dinner, I have a preference for going out together with family members or friends to watch the eye-catching moon to count our thumb. We look up to the sky, leisurely chat with each other, savor the moon cakes, and sip a cup of chrysanthemum tea, the sweet flavor flowing into our heart. Immersed in this tranquil atmosphere, as if we could touch the moon closely. But when the creaking and squeaking sound of crickets begins to impinge on my ears and the breeze kisses my face, I feel a burst of coldness from head to feet. ‘The moon hung in the sky captured my heart and soul’, ‘moonlight enlightens my heart and my miss is like rolling water in the great river’. Those meaningful and romantic poems about watching the attractive moon in ancient times created by poets have been literal classic, twinkling permanently.

Mid-autumn Festival has contained a vast amount of Chinese people’s deep emotions. It stands for family reunion, harmony and felicity. Little wonder that the significance of Mid-autumn Festival can never be overemphasized. Perhaps the so-called happiness is like sweet moonlight lighting up the depth of our heart and living life as perfection of moon in August 15th of lunar calendar."

Chinese Moon Festival

Given that our technology and science make great progress, traditional customs play a central role in our daily life. What is one of important and with a strong country flavor is all kinds of festivals. Festivals are celebrated by people in order to cherish the memory of our ancestors who devoted all their life to us. Nevertheless, some festivals come from fairy tales or legends which are mysterious and take place in the wonderland. It is Moon Festival that originates from like this.

We celebrate Moon Festival on August, 15th every year. There are several items which ask us to pay attention to. First of all, Moon Festival is based on a myth. Long long ago, there was a beautiful girl whose husband was a grand hero all over the world. He spent all his energy in helping people plant, hunt and protecting them from wild animals. It was he that let residents lead a peaceful life. Therefore, in order to express the gratitudes, the goddess of the Heaven gave him a pill whose function is to keep people alive forever. Even better, the people who took this pill can become a god. It was a huge allure to everyone. So there was a villain wanting to catch it when the hero left home. His poor wife had it and flew to the Heaven to prevent the pill from robbing. The hero felt very sad about it and prepared a lot of fruits which was treasured by his wife and moon cakes which was cooked by his wife to show his love in this day. Secondly, as time goes by, this day has become a symbol of expressing feeling of expectancy whatever is towards the partner of life or family. What is more, there are a world of poets writing poetry in this day which deliver their emotions clear and are eulogized everywhere, especially in the Tang Dynasty as well as Song Dynasty. And above all, we will prepare some fruits, dried fruits as well as moon cakes and so on for this day. It not only conveys our respect to moon, with the reason that it can bless us reunite with the persons who live in our heart but also is a suitable occasion where we can have fun with our family. For instance, we can watch TV program, sing and dance with sincere smile. It is a good way to relax ourselves as well.

Although our life updates every moment and the traditions fade out day by day, the old things still rise people’s wide concern. I do cling to the belief that only if we keep the traditional customs can we make our life more glorious."

Mid-Autumn Festival

“Zhong Qiu Jie”, which is known as Mid-Autumn Festival by the West, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It dates back to two thousand years ago and now is celebrated on the 15th day of August of the lunar calendar.

When it comes to the origin of Mid-Autumn Festival, there are two views. One view is that Mid-Autumn Festival is the day of the ancient emperors’sacrifice to the moon, and another is claimed that it is a day for farmers to celebrate the harvest and show their happiness.

There are some fairy tales which cover the festival a mysterious color. For instance, according to legend, there were ten suns appearing at the same time in the sky. The land was dry and the creatures were dead. Fortunately, the earth was saved by a brave archer called Hou Yi, he shot down nine suns successfully and asked the only sun to rise and set as usual. After that, many people respected him and came to become one of his disciples. Hou Yi got an elixir which tempted his disciple who is named Peng Meng, he tried to steal it one day and Yi’s beautiful wife Chang E, drank it for the sake of not being robbed by the bad person. Her body became light and flied to the moon slowly. The above is the story of Chang E flying to the moon, which is later one of the four main Chinese myths.

There is a kind of important food that we love to eat on the day of the festival—moon cakes, like the turkey on Thanksgiving Day in the West. The round shape of moon cakes has a lucky implied meaning. It symbolizes not only the full moon, but also the unity of the family. Meanwhile, there are some different flavors of moon cakes like Wu Ren or yolk. And now, with the development of economy and need of market, moon cakes have many kinds of shape and taste, thus the meaning of the moon cakes included never changes.

On Mid-Autumn day, most Chinese families get together to enjoy moon cakes and the moon. They also watch the Mid-Autumn Gala on TV. The moon on that day is very bright and round which is called full moon. Adults tell their children the story about a beautiful lady called Chang E, and old people sip tea. Not only the elderly but also children are all very happy with the atmosphere of reunite. Of course there are still many people who cannot go back to home as they have to hold fast to their position. They may stay alone or with their friends to look up and see the clear moon and eat moon cakes to celebrate their bright future or miss their families far away from them.

How happy it is to enjoy the moon cakes while watching the bright full moon with our beloved families. Do you think so? If you celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with our Chinese people, you can experience the charm of the traditional festival."

Write a passage based on the chart below, which shows the influences of various factors on work performance in two age groups. You should summarize the features of the two groups and make comparisons. You should write about 500 words.

Factors Affecting Work Performance

In a society of ever-quickening pace, it has arisen as a top priority for every company to ensure the highest efficiency possible; equally important for them is the work performance of every individual employee. This phenomenon can find the perfect expression in that basically many leaders nowadays are racking their brains in quest of a strategy that would substantially boost their faculty’s productivity. In light of this, it’s of indisputable necessity for them to pinpoint the underlying factors that can determine the quality of work performance.

The chart above illustrates how the ten major factors can affect the work performance of a young adult aged 18-30 and a 45-60-year-old elderly respectively. Overall, the youth can be seen to have stronger susceptibility to external influence whereas the influence of these factors on work performance to the middle-aged group is comparatively small. This phenomenon can be ascribed to the fact that the relatively young population is generally more vibrant yet capricious workers thus their behaviors are more responsive to the good or bad change in the working climate whereas the middle-aged are mostly marked by their relative stability partially because they need a stable source of income to support their family.

As is demonstrated, among the ten factors, Chance for personal development has the most

profound implications for a young adult’s work performance. Secondary to it are two factors: a relaxed working environment and promotion prospects. This is especially true for today’s youth who indefatigably engage themselves in pursuit of superiority and for whom the importance of personal development can never be overstated. Nevertheless, what to the youngsters are the three most predominant factors to the middle-aged group the impact is far less significant. Instead, money and team spirit constitute the two major factors that can influence work performance for the middle-aged. Taking on the role as the breadwinner of the family, the middle-aged’s motivation to work unquestionably lies in the amount of money they earn.

A still closer examination reveals an intriguing fact that the extent to which the work environment can influence the work performance of youth and the middle-aged coincides and that for job satisfaction and competent boss the difference between the two age groups is almost minimal. From this we can therefore conclude that the impact of competent boss, work environment, job satisfaction and money on one’s performance remains almost consistent throughout one’s working career.

A deep probe into the fundamental cause behind employees’work performance helps every boss to set a specified and realistic administrative goal and finally to effectively build a staff of high productivity. To illustrate this, consider the knowledge that young employees are highly motivated by promotion opportunities is necessary for managers to accordingly use such incentive to achieve their ends. Similarly, if you want to bolster morale among the middle-aged staff, a pay raise may well be your first consideration. In conclusion, the utilization of a managing plan tailoring to different age group should be laid considerable emphasis on by every administrative department.

张小平

The bar chart below mainly illustrates the different factors that affecting work performance chosen by the age group of 18 to 30 and the age group of 45 to 60.

To begin with, for the age group of 18 to 30, their work performance were mostly influenced by the chance for personal development. Relaxed working environment and promotion prospects at work force equally affected greatly that whether they would performed good or not. A certain amount of attention were given to team spirit and job satisfaction by the youngsters. When it comes to the job security and respect from colleagues, however, the younger adults seemed attach less attention to them while working in their related positions. Their work environment seemed to affect least in their work performance, according to the chart.

Additionally, when it comes to the people who were 45 to 60 years old, money, among all the factors, ranked on top of their lists. Middle-aged group's work performance could be influenced dramatically by the fact that whether they were surrounded by good team spirit or not. Competent boss could also help contributing to their excellent work performance. Yet the factors such as job security and work environment seemed barely influence their work efficiency and effectiveness.

As is shown on the chart, we can get the information easily that younger age group prefer to focus on the potential chance for individual development rather than to own a good work environment , for they were young, energetic and ambitious. Apparently the age group of 45 to

60 attached greatest significance on money. Who does not want a pleasant salary?

By comparing those two age groups, we can notice the striking differences. We can understand that the younger ones’work performance were greatly affected by chances for personal development, whereas the middle aged group paid more attention to money. Standing at the earlier stage of their lives, the youngsters were vastly stimulated by the possible chances for their own progress. They expected relaxed working environment and were eager to get promotion in their future career paths. Youngsters were famous for their daring, adventurous characteristics so that they concentrated least on work environment. Nevertheless, for those who were 45 to 60 years old, as they getting older, they started to plan for their future retirement. Saving money seemed to be the most reassuring way to stabilize their plans. Moreover, people who are in this age group normally have families. Consequently, the need for money stirred them to work even harder to support their families.

Besides, the demand of atmosphere at workforce differed in those two age groups. While the younger group was inclined to be wrapped in a relaxed working environment, the middle aged group behaved more tolerant towards intense pressure. As the older group worked for many years, they would have gained abundant work experience in their professional fields. So middle aged group were capable enough to handle high pressure and stress emerged at work. Thus their work performance were least influenced by the relaxed working environment and job security. However, for the youngsters who just stepped into a new territory of profession, they could panick easily under fierce competition.

In spite of the huge age gap, there are some similarities in the two groups. Undoubtedly a good team spirit was helpful in gaining satisfied work performance in both groups. Regardless of age, cooperative spirit exerted great influence on employees’daily performance.

In conclusion, young adults prioritized personal development chances in their work force, whereas the older ones were mostly satisfied by financial awards. Therefore, companies and corporations should spare no effort to cater to employees’demands based on different age group so that work efficiency would be improved significantly.

In a recent survey about factors affecting work performance, two age groups, people aged between 18 and 30 and people aging from 45 to 60 have taken part in. Among the ten factors listed on the questionnaire, only two of them are totally at the same rate in the two groups. The others are different to various extents.

As for team spirit and work environment, the two factors seem to have the same influence on the two age groups. Both of them place so much emphasis on team spirit. As for work environment, they think that it is of little importance, for they all have strong ability to adapt themselves to different situations, even tough ones. The younger group choose the chance for personal development as the most important one. No doubt that this group prefer this one, because they have a long way to go in the job career and hey need jobs in which they can promote themselves and realize the value of themselves. That may be the main point when a person is

trying to find a new job. Just imagine, if a man continues to do the same job every day, then he would end up with a boring and hopeless man, like Charles Chaplin in the film Modern Times. That is the reason why so many young men are job-hopping all the time. However, the elder group prefer to stay where they are. And the biggest reason is the attitude, for most of them do not want to struggle any longer and they want to lead a stable life. This also shows in the promotion prospects. The rate of the younger is much higher than the elder.

The most important pull factor for the elder people is money. Maybe at this time of their life, they want to store as much money as they can to sustain their twilight years and their descendants. Besides, the younger group also place high emphasis, even higher than the elder group, on this factor. As we all know, the prices of commodities nowadays are increasingly high, especially the house prices. The young people have to work for even their whole life to buy a house of their own, not to mention everyday expenditures, such as the transportation fees and the food expenses. Thus high salary is really an attractive factor.

Although the two groups make the same remark on work environment, the younger one still prefer relaxed working environment. That is really reasonable. They are young and energetic. They do not like to be restrained or depressed. That maybe the feature of the youth. Creative minds are born in free relaxed environment. On the contrary, the elder do not care that too much.

There is slight difference both in competent boss and job satisfactory. For the young , as mentioned above, they want to promote themselves, so they need competent bosses to lead them. However, if the boss is not competent enough, then they could replace the boss. While for the elder , it is difficult for them to promote, so they need a capable leader. For job satisfactory, young people are easier to adapt to any condition. On the one hand, it is very difficult to find a suitable and satisfactory job. On the other hand, they may develop such interest for something easily. While for the elder, they are more likely to do things they like, for they do not have enough passion for accepting novel things.

As for job security, the young care more about it. Once they lose a job, it might take fairly long time to search for another one, because they are green hands. For the elder, they can find other jobs easier as they have much work experience. At the very least, they could retire and just enjoy life. What the elder cares a litter more than the younger is the respect from colleagues. Although they are elder, they want to be accepted and encouraged to show that they are not too old to do the job.

In summary, when we seek for jobs, we should get familiar with ourselves by reference to the ten factors in order to perform better in our job careers. For the employers, it is better to improve their companies in the ten aspects to attract more and more job hunters."

Topic 1: When international media (including movies, fashion shows, advertisements and other TV programs) convey the same messages to the global audience, people argue that the expansion of international media has negative impacts on cultural diversity. What is your opinion? 国际媒体(global media)—般掌握在少数几个有实力的机构手中(in the hands of a few, large, powerful organizations);有了媒体的宣传(propaganda)后,西方文化成了主流(domineering force),大规模的、有吸引力的广告(mass seductive advertising )唤起了落后地区人们对物质新的向往(create fresh desires),经济联系增强(strong economic ties),西方产品取代了本地产品,使人们更加向往西方的文化; ?文化开始融合在一起(mingle),人们被新的价值观所围绕(bombarded with new values),对自己的文化失去信心和自豪感(confidence and pride),拒绝接受自己的文化传统(rejection of their cultural heritage)转而接受西方的文化习惯(adoption of Western cultural practices);西方媒体削弱了民族的特征(ethnic identity)和社会的凝聚力(social cohesion);因为担心失去观众(a loss of viewers),当地的电视台也开始播放西方的电视节目(television shows), ?国际媒体的普遍会降低世界文化的品质和多样性(degrade the quality and diversity of world culture);文化被商业化(commercialized), —些文化产品(cultural goods),如音乐、服装,都变成了商品(commodities in the marketplace)。 未必一定放弃传统观念(not necessarily lead to the abolition of traditional values),事实上媒体可以起到宣传和稳固传统文化的作用; ? (Most foreign programming is promoting cultural diversity.),适应了当地的条件(adapt to local conditions),注意到了当地文化的敏感性(aware of cultural sensitivity).自我调节来适应市场(exercise self-censorship to suit the market :)。 As international media companies expand across the world, the growing popularity and uniformity of some media programs (such as TV shows, movies, fashion shows) is causing worldwide concern. Many people have strong views toward this trend. In my opinion, international media is closely linked to cultural globalization and cultural homogeneity. The dominance of international media is a sign of Western cultural imperialism and has the potential to thwart cultural diversity. It is not a secret that international media is owned and operated by a handful of giant corporations, such as Time Warner. They control large sectors of the media market and place national media companies at risk. The contraction in the number of media owners will cause a proportional reduction, in the variety of programs broadcasted. For example, painting, music and movies accessible in the media have a small number of genres, imposing restraints on one's knowledge of artworks of different cultural backgrounds. In addition to seizing control over those creative industries, global entertainment companies affect cultural diversity by reshaping the perceptions, beliefs and norms of ordinary citizens in different countries. Most of the cultural values and ideals promoted by the leading mainstream media are of American origin. American culture values individuality, maximization of one's benefits and material wealth, rather than communal life and family solidarity, the values and norms previously treasured in" many Asian countries. Unfortunately, many Asian people now imitate American people, causing the alteration of their perceptions of family. This radical change can be attributed to those movies and TV programs that portray the success of American individuals or corporations.

实战中有相当数量的考生只用一句话说完了这个步骤(比如:These bottles are transported by trucks to supermarkets, and then they would be bought by consumers.)。

# 43. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows CO2 emissions for different forms of transport in the European Union. The Pie Chart shows the percentage of European Union funds being spent on different forms of transport. You should write at least 150 words.

model answer: The chart shows CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre for variuos methods of transport in the European Union while the pie chart shows European Union spending on transport. Flying by air produces by far the greatest CO2 emissions, approximately three times as much as passenger cars which are the next largest producers. Very little is spent by the EU on air travel while roads make up more than half of the EU transport budget. Trains produce about three times less CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre than passenger cars and eight times less than air travel. Nearly a third of EU transport funds are spent on railways. In recent decades, a large number of young population surge into major cities to pursue a better life, but to their disappointment, the quality of city life is not as high as they expected. The fundamental reason for declining quality of life should be the centralization of various societal resources, such as hospitals, education institutions, large companies and so forth. Centralizing fine resources in a place is originally why a city is founded, but over concentration can lead to high density of population who come to share these resources by being employed or starting a business, and cause problems in many social aspects including traffic congestion, high living cost, severe pollution, etc. Ironically, in spite of tight squeeze in small flats, city dwellers have no opportunity to develop close relationships with their family, friends and neighborhoods and the reason for such social isolation is that young people are busy competing for precious opportunities for a successful career and life, leaving little time for their personal life. To tackle these problems, diverse measures should be taken but the most effective one should be to uproot the resource centralization. By that I mean to move some industry, business and services from metropolises to smaller

1) The 21st century witnesses --- 2) With the development of science and technology,--- 3) In modern society, --- 4) It is quite common these days that --- 5) Recently,--- 例如:There are social, medical and technical problems associated with the use of mobile phones. Do you agree that the problems outweigh the benefits of mobile phones? The late 20th century witnessed the boom of science and technology, which gave rise to a series of technological innovations, including the mobile phone. 或with the development of science and technology, the mobile phone is more and more available to and popular with common people. 1) it is generally believed that --- 2) it is said that--- 3) it is reported that--- 例如:Nowadays, people are facing more and more work-related stress. State the possible reasons for this phenomenon and make some recommendations about how to combat it. It is generally believed that individuals are confronted with psychological and physical stress coming from work. 1)It is known to all that --- 2)As is known to all, --- 3)--- is known as--- 例如:The main purpose of public libraries is to provide books and they should not waste their

Some industrialized countries have serious environmental problems. The damage to the environment is an inevitable result when a country tends to improve the standard of living. To what extent do you agree or disagree. Nowadays, environmental problems is (are/have been) one of the most serious phenomenon (Chinglish, 改为dangerous issues)that threat almost some(every) industrialized countries are facing. However, whether only countries use the resource in environment to increase the quality of life is a controversial issue. (我觉得应该改为:Thus, it is controversial that many countries have adapted the technics of excessively exploiting natural resources in order to accelerate economic development.)In my opinion, it is unavoidable that countries break the surrounding(破坏环境?不这样搭配) if they want to develop the industry and the level of life. (In my opinion, comparatively damage to the environment in the process of developing comprehensive national strength is an inevitable result.) Nowadays, environmental problems have been one of the most dangerous issues that threat almost every industrialized countries. Thus, it is controversial that many countries have adapted the technics of excessively exploiting natural resources in order to accelerate economic development. In my opinion, comparatively damage to the environment in the process of developing comprehensive national strength is an inevitable result. First, it is obvious that for our life(?), the purpose of long-term human activity is to make industrial development(make development没有这个用法哦)and improve the quality of life. This means that there are more and more rubbishes when we are working.(为什么用这么多there be 句型呢)Therefore, if we want to promote the economic (promote economy), we may damage our environment in the daily life.(in the daily life 很生硬, 改为in unconscious ways) Firstly, the very existence of human beings indeed exerts various influences on the natural environment, such as water pollution, disafforestation and the greenhouse effect. Besides that, human waste pollution has become more and more noteworthy with the fast sprawl of urban districts concerning the unprecedentedly speed of economic development. Moreover, with the population growing by (没这个搭配哈, with the amount of population growing/increasing 差不多), we need a loads of resource(resources)to support our life. For example, it is allowed by government that every family can get child more than one since 2014 in China.(普遍二胎政策不是这样翻译的哈,还是自己要多查资料) So it maybe(may)consume more resources than before. (it consume,it指代的是什么?) Moreover, larger pollution demands greater amounts of resources to support, a phenomenon that consequently adds more man-made pressure to the natural environment. For instance, Chinese government has issued the universal two-child policy which originally aims at optimizing the demographic structure but may simultaneously bring greater demands of natural resources from the environment.
