很少人在第一次就轻而易举地获得成功,而坚持就意味着能够成功。

Persistence is the key to success, whether for a single person or an organization. The lack of it would mean failure in reaching a certain goal.Success seldom comes easily on the first try. What separates the successful from the unsuccessful is persistence. Successful people also fail from time to time, but they don’t let thei r failure defeat their spirit.Successful people learn from defeats, revise their strategy as needed and try again and again until they succeed. Unsuccessful people try something once or twice and when it fails, they give up, usually passing the blame on to someone or something else, and learn nothing from their own experience.

Successful people expect periodic defeats, learn what went wrong and why, don’t waste looking for someone to blame, make necessary adjustments, and try again. If you are persistent, you will almost inevitably succeed. If you are not persistent, you will almost certainly fail.

[注释]:

persistence: the act of persisting 毅力

revise: to reconsider and change or modify 修改

periodic: happening or appearing at regular intervals 定期的 inevitably: invariably occurring or appearing; predictable 不可避免的

Back then, the only really famous people were pop stars and actors, political figures and war heroes – although things were changing. In just 30 years, his statement seems to have come true. Today there are countless individuals that go in and out of the media spotlight. The most common way that ordinary people today become famous is through reality shows. Both American Idol and Hunan TV’s have produced quite a few instant stars. If others show true talent or staying power, they may be awarded extra time to prove themselves worthy of media and public attention. But while Warhol emphasized the short-lived nature of modern fame, he also pointed out that fame is easier to get nowadays. If digital video cameras enable people to become reporters, why shouldn’t they also become celebrities?

It is the first Starbucks cafe to boldly go where no Starbucks has gone before, onto potentially hostile French territory. Its advertising posters on the Champs Elysee announce "Starbucks - a passion pour le cafe". But is the company aware of the risk it is taking by challenging the very birthplace of cafe society "I think every time we come into a new market we do it with a great sense of respect, a great deal of interest in how that cafe society has developed over time," Bill O'Shea of Starbucks says. "We recognise there is a huge history here of cafe society and we have every confidence we can enjoy, augment and join in that passion." And he may be right. Despite some sniffiness in the French press, some younger French are expressing their excitement that they will finally be able to visit the kind of cafe they love to watch on the US TV series Friends. In fact, for some, it is an exotic rarity, far more exciting than the average French cafe. Melissa, aged 18, says she can hardly wait: "I love Starbucks caramel coffee - it's very good and I like the concept that they're opening in Paris. I think Starbucks will be OK for French people." An American tourist is equally excited when she spots the sign - this could be just the thing to help her get over the occasional twinge of homesickness. "I love the French cafes, but Starbucks is so popular in the States and it's become part of American culture and now it's come to France, and that's OK," she said.

双语美文诵读 Look Every Day Positively If your life feels like it is lacking the power that you want and the motivation that you need, sometimes all you have to do is shift your point of view. By training your thoughts to concentrate on the bright side of things, you are more likely to have the incentive to achieve your goals. You are less likely to be held back by negative ideas that might limit your performance. Your life can be enhanced, and your happiness enriched when you choose to change your perspective. Don’t leave your future to chance, or wait for things to get better mysteriously on their own. You must go in the direction of your hopes and aspirations. Begin to build your confidence, and work through problems rather than avoid them. Remember that power is not necessarily control over situations, but the ability to deal with whatever comes in your way. Always believe that good things are possible, and remember that mistakes can be lessons that lead to discoveries. Take your fear and transform into trust; learn to rise above anxiety and doubt. Turn your “worry hours” into “productive hours”. Take the energy that you have wasted and direct it toward every worthwhile effort that you can be involved in. You will see beautiful things happen when you allow yourself

晨读英语美文100篇

The road to success It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their business lives sweeping out of the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself. Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly start ed, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “my place is at the top”. Be king in your dreams. And there is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on the line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it. The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here, there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry too many baskets that break most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the
