One day I passed by an accident site with flowers and a flag where somebody was killed.

I stopped, said a prayer and put some flowers down next to all the other flowers. When I went back in my car, I asked myself, "Why am I stopping here, I do not even know this person?"

That night I had a very strange dream. All of a sudden, this handsome young man appeared and said: "Hello, I am Rocky - please tell my mom that I love her!" When I woke up, I could not get this young man and his message out of my mind. I do not know Rocky and neither do I know his mom - so how may I deliver his message to his mother?

About two weeks later I went to fill up my car at a nearby gas station. When I paid for my gasoline I admired the lady’s necklace which was shining like a star. She said that the ashes of her son are in there. I will never forget this moment when everything became still and so peaceful. I put my hand on hers and asked her: "What is your son's name?" and when she said "Rocky" our eyes connected deeply and filled with tears. I was speechless and not able to respond. I drove home sobbing and wrote a note for Rocky's mom telling her about her precious boy’s appearance in my dreams and the message. A few days later when I saw her again, she approached me with a warm hug and said Rocky was only 19 when he got killed by a speeding driver who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

And she is already in training, becoming the first person to attend all three of NASA’s world space camps.

13-year old Alyssa Carson is using a video simulation to land a robotic explorer on Mars. At the moment, it’s the closest she or anybody else can get to the Red Planet. But for as long as she can remember, Alyssa has dreamed of being the first person to actually land on Mars. “It was calling me. I could just sense that I needed t o go there. Scientists are warning that sitting for long periods —even if you also exercise regularly —could be bad for your health. And it doesn’t matter where the sitting takes place —just the overall number of hours it occurs. Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.

It is suggested that authorities should rethink how they define physical activity to highlight the dangers of sitting. While health officials have issued guidelines recommending minimum amounts of physical activity, they haven’t suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.

"After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals," Ekblom-Bak, health expert, said. She explained that genes regulating(调节) the amount of glucose(葡萄糖)and fat in the body start to shut down.

Even for people who exercise, spending long periods of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert, said people who exercise every day —but still spend a lot of time sitting —might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than at a time.

Other Researchers also found people who sat more had a higher death risk, independently of whether or not they exercised. "We don’t have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad," said Peter Katzmarzyk, who led the study. More research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset (抵消) those effects.

"People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits," Ekblom-Bak said. "But when they’re in the office, it seems the more you can get up and interrupt this sedentary behavior, the better."

28. What is the best title of the text?

A. Regular Exercise Key to Health.

B. How to Avoid Sitting Too Much.

C. Long Sitting Could Be Deadly.

D. How to Exercise while Working.

29. How does sitting too much affect the human body?

A. It causes physical pains.

B. It increases body fat.

C. It cuts down glucose.

D. It disturbs genetic functions.

30. What can we learn from the text?

A. The more exercise, the better.

B. Regular exercise offsets long sitting.

C. Working in offices does harm to health.

D. There’s no defined time limit to sitting.

31. The underlined word “sedentary” in the last sentence is closest in meaning to “______”.

A. working

B. sitting

C. exercising

D. remaining

Malawi is one of the poorest nations in Africa with millions of people living under the poverty line. Unemployment rates are high. And those who have jobs have low salaries. Yet many Malawians are using more than half of their monthly incomes on mobile phone usage. This makes Malawi one of the most expensive countries in the world to use cell phones.

In Malawi you will see huge billboards advertising mobile phone. Here in the capital Lilongwe, the branding and marketing also can be seen on umbrellas used by street venders, T-shirts. But mobile services are anything but low price in this country. In fact, a report by the International Telecommunications Union, ITU, says on average, Malawians use more than twelve dollars a month on cell phones. This is more than half of what an ordinary Malawian earns. In neighboring Mozambique, consumers spend just over a quarter of their income on mobile phone usage. But in Kenya and South Africa, the figure is significantly lower amounting to less than five percent of average monthly earnings. The government might be forced to intervene to bring down the cost of using a mobile phone.

But it is not just the cost of mobile services that is an issue in Malawi. Many consumers also want the providers to give them value for their money by improving the quality of service they get.

“There are times that the network is very bad. Even the Internet is very slow. So it’s so frustrating sometimes you want to make a call, it’s a quick one and then you can’t get through.” A customer said. “So these are some of the things that I have seen that maybe they nee d to change.”

But in order for the services to improve, the government says it needs to upgrade existing infrastructure, especially in rural areas. The authorities admit this could take up to five years.

32.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Malawi is the poorest country.

B. Malawians are living a busy life.

C. Cell phones are popular in Malawi.

D. The cost of mobile services is high.

33. Different countries are mentioned in the second paragraph to ______.

A. introduce some means of adverting

B. compare the costs of using cell phones

C. prove the income of Malawians is low

D. show what the government has done

34. Besides the price, what do Malawians complain about using mobile phones?

A. The quality of service is bad.

B. They can not make quick calls.

C. The Internet is not accessible.

D. Their money is not valuable.

35.What might be the government’s attitude towards the issue?

A. Indifferent.

B. Optimistic.

C. Positive.

D. Unconfident.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Pubs have been the cornerstone of British society for hundreds of years. Over the years, British Pubs have developed many traditions. Had you visited a pub in the 1990s, you might have noticed the ringing of the bell around 11pm, signaling that the pub was about to close.

36

During World War I, the British Government decided that pubs must close at nine thirty in the evening (later to change to 11pm). 37 Ringing a bell was a clear signal to let

everyone know that the pub was about to close.

38 Before that, depending on what kind of entertainment a place offered, there was a different license, for example, a cinema needed a different license from a theater. A pub needed a different license from a night cafe. The different licenses that existed at the time were combined into one. Additionally, every three years the person responsible for the pub had to renew their license which was valid for only one location - this period of validity was extended to ten years and also the licensee was able to transfer from one location to another. 39 It also became much easier and cheaper for owners to put on entertainment such as music bands. Cutting down on needless paperwork was predicted to save 1.97 billion pounds over ten years! One of the biggest effects, however, was that ninety years after the 11pm closing time was introduced, pubs were able to decide when they would close. 40

A. Therefore, it became easier to apply for and process applications.

B. This was to minimize the risk of tired workers and potential loss in productivity.

C. British troops were fighting fierce battles with their enemies.

D. They can have more flexibility in terms of opening hours.

E. How did this come about?

F. Do you want to visit a British pub?

G. Later, however, there was a major shake up in the licensing laws.
