Researchers are worried that young children are becoming addicted to technology and are losing their ability to perform simple tasks.

Most children at three or four are familiar with tapping the screen of a phone or tablet but can?t use their fingers for tasks like building a tower out of blocks. Researchers also warn that older children can?t do simple writing tests because they are too used to tapping screens to write letters.

“I have spoken to many teachers who ha ve concerns over the increasing number of young pupils who can tap a screen but have no skills to play with building blocks, or the pupils who cannot socialize with other pupils but whose parents talk proudly of their ability to use a tablet or smartphone,” said Colin Kinney, who is also a teacher.

Instead of playing with other children on weekends and after school, kids are choosing to stay

indoors and quietly play on a tablet. If children do not learn to socialize at a young age, it can become much harder for them to learn how to make friends as they get older.

Kinney?s fellow teachers talk of pupils who come into their classrooms after spending most of the previous night playing computer games and whose attention is so limited that they may be tired and can?t focus on their lessons. How will a child who could grow up to be a very good artist be able to succeed if he or she does not learn how to use a paintbrush and develop his or her painting skills?

While it is certainly necessary to know how to use te chnology in today?s world, it is still very important for children to have basic social and physical skills to draw on as they get older. “In the same way we can use a brick to either break a window or build a house, digital technology can be used for good or bad, and teachers can and should help their pupils make positive choices so they have positive experiences,” said Colin Kinney.

51. Many older children find it hard to do simple writing tests mainly because ______.

A. they haven?t made full preparati on for them

B. they don?t become used to writing letters

C. they can?t find enough writing materials

D. they have little or no skills to play with building blocks

52. What are kids advised to do according to the passage?

A. Stay indoors and read more.

B. Practice to be good artists.

C. Spend more time with other kids.

D. Learn how to use a smartphone.

53. How did Colin Kinney arrive at his conclusion?

A. By watching his students carefully.

B. By listing some common questions.

C. By discussing with his students.

D. By talking with his colleagues.

54. What is the fellow teachers? attitude towards pupils addicted to technology?

A. Positive.

B. Worried.

C. Unknown.

D. Unconcerned.

55. It is implied from Colin Kinney?s words in the last paragraph that ______.

A. students should balance technology and basic skills

B. technology is of great use for children in today?s world

C. teachers play an important role in students? growth

D. it is better for students to break a window with a brick

Books have been our best friends from time immemorial. There was a time when reading them was supposed to be the best way of entertainment. Book lovers used to carry the book of their choice wherever they went. But, now in this microchip generation where everything is possible with the help of the Internet, we do not need to carry them for reading. E-books are gaining popularity and the Web world is now a treasure house of books. All book lovers can rejoice, as now they can find their favorite books online.

Reading books online is a comparatively new concept. People used to think that the Internet is a storehouse of information. But with the advancement of technology, now you can read and download books from the Web world. Imagine reading your favorite romantic novel while on a pleasant trip. You may think that it will be quite tiresome to carry such heavy books while touring. But there is nothing to worry anymore as e-books have come as a boon to us.

E-books are nothing but online books. The only difference between an e-book and a book is that one has a physical existence while the other dwells in the virtual world of the Internet. Content is the same for both. And you are saved from the hassles of carrying books as well.

There are various e-book depositories (贮藏室) from which you can either buy or download e-books. The process of downloading them is very easy. The websites give proper instructions and you just need to follow them to get hold of the book of your choice. Moreover, if you do not want to make investment, just read it by opening the online depository and read it for free.

From entertainment to business, e-books prove to be handy for all purposes. The time will come when they will become the most important entertainment option for many people.

Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year- old twin sons: a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.

“I have two kids in college, and I want to say …come home,? but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs.

The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid form the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school.

With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around.

At the same time, tuition (学费) continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982

to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade,

“If we go on this way for another 25years, we won?t have an affordable system of higher education,” says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. “The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”

Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.

61. According to Paragraph 1, why did the plan of Jacobs family fail?

A. The twins wasted too much money.

B. The father was out of work.

C. Their saving ran out.

D. The family fell apart.

62. How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?

A. They asked their kids to come home.

B. They borrowed $20,000 from the school.

C. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.

D. They got help from the school and the federal government.

63. Financial aid administrators believe that ______.

A. more families will face the same problem as the Jacobses

B. the government will receive more letters of complaint

C. college tuition fees will double soon

D. America?s unemployment will fall

64. What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?

A. They blamed the government for the tuition increase.

B. Their income remained steady in the last decade.

C. They will try their best to send kids to college.

D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.

65. According to the last paragraph, the government will ______.

A. provide most students will scholarships

B. dismiss some financial aid administrators

C. stop the companies from making student loans

D. go on providing financial support for college students

D

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the Website you?ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cel l phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it?s likely that some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girl friend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—the 21st century replacement of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it?s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs (碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is: Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no.”

When opinion polls (投票数) ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found a strong bad feeling about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny part of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收费站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisition has run a series of tests that reveal people will give away personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (优惠卷).

But privacy does matter —at least sometimes. It?s like health: When you have it, you don?t notice it. Only when it?s gone do you wish you?d done more to protect it.

66. What d oes the author mean by saying “the 21st century replacement of being caught naked”?

A. People?s personal information is easily found without their knowledge.

B. In the 21st century people try every means to look into others? secrets.

C. People tend to be more frank with each other in the information age.

D. Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.

67. What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?

A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.

B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.

C. There should be a distance even between friends.

D. There should be fewer arguments between friends.

68. Why does the author say “We live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret”?

A. Modern society has finally developed into an open society.

B. People leave traces around when using modern technology.

C. There are always people who are curious about others? affairs.

D. Many search engines benefit from giving away people?s identities.

69. What do most Americans do as for privacy protection?

A. They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.

B. They use various loyalty cards for business transactions (交易).

C. They rely most and more on electronic devices.

D. They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.

70. According to the passage, privacy is like health because _______.

A. people will make every effort to keep it

B. its importance is rarely understood

C. it is something that can easily be lost

D. people don?t treasure it until they lose it
