The term translation has several meanings: it can refer to the general subject field, the product(the text that has been translated) or the process(the act of producing the translation, otherwise known as translating). The process of translation between two different written languages involves the translator changing an original written text (the source language or ST) in the original verbal language (the source language or SL)into a written text (the target language or TL).

著名翻译家傅雷曾在《高老头》的重译本序言中说:“翻译应该像临画一样,所求的不在形似而在神似;理想的译文仿佛是原作者的中文写作。”“翻译如临画.如伯乐相马”,“重神似,不重形似”“得其精而忘其粗,再其内而忘其外”;

著名作家矛盾认为:“文学翻译是用另一种语言,把原作的艺术意境传达出来,使读者在读原文的时候能够感受到像原作一样的得到启发,感动和美的感受”,“文学翻译的主要任务……在于把原作的精神、面貌忠实地复制出来……”

翻译家萧乾说:“翻译好像走钢丝,实在艰难……”;

著名学者郭沫若说:“创作是处女,翻译是媒婆”;“翻译是一种创造性的工作,好的翻译等于创作,甚至还可能超过创作”;

范存忠先生认为翻译是“把一种语言已经表达出来的东西用另一种语言准确而完整地重新表达出来”;

翻译家沈苏儒先生在《翻译的最高境界--"信达雅"漫谈》中指出,翻译是跨语言、跨文化的交流。翻译是把具有某一文化背景的发送者用某种语言(文字)所表述的内容尽可能充分地、有效地传达给使用另一种语言(文字的)、具有另一种文化背景的接受者。

秋斯认为:翻译是一种科学。

冯庆华教授认为“翻译是许多语言活动中的一种,它是用一种语言形式把另一种语言形式里的内容重新表现出来的语言实践活动;前者为源语(source language),而后者为译语(target language);

Translation is to turn into one’s own language to another language.”

当代美国翻译理论家奈达早期的定义:“Translation consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message, firstly in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.”“翻译就是在译语中用最贴切又最自然的对等语再现原语的信息,首先是语义,其次是文体。”

法国散文诗的创始人贝尔特朗(Aloysius Bertrand)曾说:“翻译好比女人,美丽的不忠实,忠实的不美丽。”(佘协斌梁海军,2002)

法国理论家马鲁佐(J. Harouzeau)说,翻译是一门技巧。

德国译学教授Wolfram Wilss 在The Science of Translation:Problems & Methods 一书中说:“Translation is not simply a matter of seeking other words with similar meaning, but of finding appropriate ways of saying things in another language. Translating is always meaning-based, i.e. it is the transfer of meaning instead of form from the source language to the target language.”翻译不只是在另一种语言中寻找意义相似的其他词语,而是寻找表达事物的适当方式。翻译始终立足于语义,也就是说,是语义从源语到译语的转换,而不是形式。

豪斯(J. House)给翻译的定义是:“Translation is the replacement of a text in

the source language by a semantically and pragmatically equivalent text in the target language.”翻译是用语义和语用对等的译语文本代替原语文本。

语言学派典型的代表人物英国著名的翻译理论家卡特福德(Catford, 1965) 把翻译界定为: “The replacement of textural material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL).”用一种语言(译语) 中相等值的文本材料来替代另一种语言(原语) 。”原语和目标语之间的差异归因于两种语言系统之间的差异。翻译的任务是找出两种语言在内容、风格、效果等方面完全一致之处。

英国翻译理论家纽马克(Newmark)认为:“Translation is first a science, which entails the knowledge and verification of the facts and the language that describes them-here, what is wrong, mistakes of truth, can be identified; secondly, it is a skill, which calls for appropriate language and acceptable usage; thirdly, an art, which distinguishes good from undistinguished writing and is the creative, the intuitive, sometimes the inspired, level of the translation; lastly, a matter of taste, where argument ceases, preferences are expressed, and the variety of meritorious translation is the reflection of individual differences.”

(E.A奈达,1969)

Finding fossil man 发现化?石?人 Why are legends handed down by storytellers useful? We can read of things that happened 5,000 years ago in the Near East, where people first learned to write. But there are some parts of the world where even now people cannot write. The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas -- legends handed down from one generation of storytellers to another. These legends are useful because they can tell us something about migrations of people who lived long ago, but none could write down what they did. Anthropologists wondered where the remote ancestors of the Polynesian peoples now living in the Pacific Islands came from. The sagas of these people explain that some of them came from Indonesia about 2,000 years ago. But the first people who were like ourselves lived so long ago that even their sagas, if they had any, are forgotten. So archaeologists have neither history nor legends to help them to find out where the first 'modern men' came from. Fortunately, however, ancient men made tools of stone, especially flint, because this is easier to shape than other kinds. They may also have used wood and skins, but these have rotted away. Stone does not decay, and so the tools of long ago have remained when even the bones of the men who made them have disappeared without trace. 读到flint 打?火?石anthropomorphic ?人格 化拟1anthropo ?人类 的让步?一?一trace back date back read of read about a trace of ?

Lesson46.doc

新概念英语第四册课文翻译及学习笔记:Lesson46 【课文】 Punctuality is a necessary habit in all public affairs in civilized society. Without it, nothing could ever be brought to a conclusion; everything would be in state of chaos. Only in a sparsely-populated rural community is it possible to disregard it. In ordinary living, there can be some tolerance of unpunctuality. The intellectual, who is working on some abstruse problem, has everything coordinated and organized for the matter in hand. He is therefore forgiven if late for a dinner party. But people are often reproached for unpunctuality when their only fault is cutting things fine. It is hard for energetic, quick-minded people to waste time, so they are often tempted to finish a job before setting out to keep an appointment. If no accidents occur on the way, like punctured tires, diversions of traffic, sudden descent of fog, they will be on time. They are often more industrious, useful citizens than those who are never late. The over- punctual can be as much a trial to others as the unpunctual. The guest who arrives half an hour too soon is the greatest nuisance. Some friends of my family had this irritating habit. The only thing to do was ask them to come half an hour later than the other guests. Then they arrived just when we wanted them. If you are citing a train, it is always better to be comfortably early than even a fraction of a minted too late. Although being early may mean wasting a little time, this will be less than if you miss the train and have to wait an hour or more for the next one; and you avoid the frustration

其划分出来的两大“翻译方法”(直接翻译和间接翻译)其实应为“翻译策略”(所以Munday说,“The two general translation strategies identified by Vinay &Darbelnet are direct translation and oblique translation”,见Munday,2008:56),而在其划分出来的七类“处理方式”中,前三类和最后两类属于“翻译方法”,第四、第五类则属于“翻译技巧”。

R.Jacobson

(Intralingual translation or rewording is an interpretation of verbal signs by means of other signs of the same language.) 2)语际翻译或严格意义上的翻译是指用另一种语言解释某种语言符号。(Interlingual translation or translation proper is an interpretation of verbal signs by means of somc other language.) 3)符际翻译或嬗变是指用非语言系统的符号解释某种语言符号。(Intersemiotic translation or transmutation is an interpretation of verbal signs by means of signs of nonverbal systems.)

Alfred the Great acted as his own spy, visiting Danish camps disguised as a minstrel. In those days wandering minstrels were welcome everywhere. They were not fighting men, and their harp was their passport. Alfred had learned many of their ballads in his youth, and could vary his programme with acrobatic tricks and simple conjuring. While Alfred's little army slowly began to gather at Athelney, the king himself set out to penetrate the camp of Guthrum, the commander of the Danish invaders. These had settled down for the winter at Chippenham: thither Alfred went. He noticed at once that discipline was slack: the Danes had the self-confidence of conquerors, and their security precautions were casual. They lived well, on the proceeds of raids on neighbouring regions. There they collected women as well as food and drink, and a life of ease had made them soft. Alfred stayed in the camp a week before he returned to Athelney. The force there assembled was trivial compared with the Danish horde. But Alfred had deduced that the Danes were no longer fit for prolonged battle: and that their commissariat had no organization, but depended on irregular raids. So, faced with the Danish advance, Alfred did not risk open battle but harried the enemy. He was constantly on the move, drawing the Danes after him. His patrols halted the raiding parties: hunger assailed the Danish army. Now Alfred

新概念英语第四册第三单元课文原文(句型翻译)(教学用)

Lesson 3 Matterhorn man 马特霍恩山 区人 Modern alpinists try to climb mountains by a route which will give them good sport, and the more difficult it is, the more highly it is regarded. In the pioneering days, however, this was not the case at all. The early climbers were looking for the easiest way to the top because the summit was the prize they sought, especially if it had never been attained before. It is true that during their explorations they often faced difficulties and dangers of the most perilous nature, equipped in a manner which would make a modern climber shudder at the thought, but they did not go out of their way to court such excitement. They had a single aim, a solitary goal--the top! It is hard for us to realize nowadays how difficult it was for the pioneers. Except for one or two places such as Zermatt and Chamonix, which had rapidly become popular, Alpine villages tended to be impoverished settlements
