Gestures are the silent language of every culture. We point a finger or move another p art of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of ev ery country or we may be misunderstood.

In the US, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal discussion. The handsh ake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Frie nds may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet each other with a hug (拥抱).

Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stan d about 2.5 feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, "Pardon me." or "Excuse me."

Americans like to look at the other in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. When you stare at some one, however, it is not polite.

For Americans, thumbs-up means "yes", "very good" or "well done". Thumbs-down means th e opposite. To call a waiter, one might put up one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as you are signing a piece of paper. It is a ll right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger(食指). American s shake their index fingers at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when t hey admire them.

Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing(困惑的). If you don't know w hat to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.

GENEVA— The use of stimulants(兴奋剂) or drugs is increasing and something must be do ne about it, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.

"In the 1970s the international focus(焦点) was on heroin. In the 1980s and the 1990s the focus was on cocaine. Now in the 21st century we are becoming frightened by the rapid in crease in amphetamine-type stimulants, not only in the rich countries of the world but the w hole world," said the official of the WHO.

Amphetamines are often used by the workers, such as long-distance truck drivers, to in crease endurance (耐久力) or delay sleep, the official said.

About 3 per cent of the population of the world use amphetamine, experts said. In Brit ain, among young people between the ages of 16 and 19, fourteen percent of them have used am phetamines.

In Korea, Japan, Denmark, the Philippines and Australia, amphetamines are more widely used than heroin or cocaine, a reporter said. The problem is also widespread in the United S tates, Western and Eastern Europe.

Directions (a):Answer the following questions.

31. This passage appeared in a newspaper,in which type of column (栏目) might it be?

32. How many kinds of drugs are mentioned in this passage? What are they?

33. Why does the use of amphetamine-type stimulants frighten us?

34. According to the passage, how many people in the world have used amphetamines?

35. What's the purpose of writing this article?

Directions (b):Judge whether the following statements are true (T) or fa lse(F) .

Microwaves that transmit television signals always travel in a straight line. As the E arth is round, it is impossible to send television signals over a long distance. For example, if we tried to send television signals directly from Europe to America, the microwaves carr ying the signals would shoot into space over the Atlantic and wouldn't reach America.

If we want to send television signals around the surface of the Earth, we must send th em from point to point by a relay system. On land we can set up relay stations for this purp ose, and we can pass signals from station to station in a series of straight lines. However, we can not do this so easily over water. In order to send pictures directly across the Atla ntic, for example, we would need to build a chain of relay stations across the ocean, which is about 3,000 miles wide. One choice would be to build one great tower in the middle of the ocean. But the tower would have to be 500 miles high!

Both of these ideas are impossible. So we use a communication satellite thousands of m iles in outer space to relay the television signals across the Atlantic. A satellite receive s the picture signals in a straight line from the ground station on one side of the Atlantic, from England, for example. Then it sends signals down again, also in a straight line, to th e ground station on the other side of the Atlantic in the United States. The communication s atellite must be within view of both ground stations at the same time.

Directions(a):Find out the words or phrases in the passage which have the following m eanings.

39. They are very short waves used in TV and radar: _______

40. A place that receives and rebroadcasts radio programmes: _______

41. To send out: _______

Directions (b):Answer the following questions.

42. Why would people build relay stations?

43. If we need to build one relay station in the middle of the ocean, what should the height of the relay station be?

44. How should the television signals be sent around the surface of the Earth?

45. What do we use to send television signals across the ocean?

So far, about 27 countries have visited Antarctica for scientific research. 51 the living conditions are very hard, many scientists have to stay there for long periods of time.

So, how do they manage their lives on the ice?

Well, during the summer, the temperature in Antarctica reaches about -20℃. It falls t o about -60℃ in winter. So, even if there are 24 hours of sunshine, scientists 52 keep wearing all the correct clothes to protect them 53 the cold. These clothes include jea ns, running shoes, jackets, long underwear, boots and woolen socks. Although highly technica l clothing 54 much protection against the extreme cold, scientists often need to go out side when there is an icy wind blowing and the temperature is -30℃. Natural 55 such as facial hair can also help.

"That's 56 many researchers wear a beard. It really does keep you warm," says Ger man explorer Arved Fuchs.

Life on the ice means living with other researchers in tight living spaces. Most peopl e sleep in dorm style rooms. More remote field camps use separate tents. So, at least some r esearchers don't have to 57 annoying snorers (讨厌的打鼾者).

It is 58 for a polar researcher to be in good physical condition. They can be 5

9 to climb to heights of more than 3,000 meters and the Antarctic atmosphere has less oxy gen than 60 of any other continent.

I promised Michael I wouldn't mention this until the season was over. Now I think it' s 61 .

Early last season, I wrote a column(专栏) about an act of kindness I had seen Jorda

n 62 for a disabled child outside the stadium. After 63 was printed, I got a call from a man in the western suburbs. He said, "I read 64 you wrote about Jordan, but I thought I should tell you another thing I saw."

Here it comes, I thought. It always does. Write something nice about a person, and peo ple 65 you up to say that the person is not so 66 .

A few weeks later Jordan and I were talking about something else before a game, and I brought 67 what the man had said. Was the man right? Had Jordan really been talking to those two boys in that poor and dirty neighborhood?

"Not two boys," Jordan said." 68 four."

And he named them. He said four names. And what did they talk about?

"Everything," Jordan said. "Anything. I've asked to see their grades so that I can che ck to see they're paying 69 to their schoolwork. If it turns out that one or two of th em may 70 teaching, I make sure they get it."

It's just one more part of Michael Jordan's life. The NBA season is over now, and thos e boys have their memories. So do I!

IV. 翻译(Translation) (共10小题,计10分)

A)阅读下面短文,然后把划线处的句子译成汉语。

(71) As we know, it is very important that a firm should pay attention to the training of its staff(全体职员) as there exist many weak parts in its various departments. Staff tra

ining must have a purpose, which is defined when a firm considers its training

needs, which are in turn based on job descriptions and job specifications (规范).

(72) A job description should give details of the performance that is required for a p articular job, and a job specification should give information about the behaviour, knowledge and skills that are expected of an employee who works in the position. When all of this has been collected, it is possible to make a training specification. (73)This specifies(详细说明) what the Training Department must teach for the successful performance of the job, and a lso the best method to use in the training period.

There are many different training methods, and there are advantages and disadvantages in all of them. (74) Successful training programmes depend on an understanding of the differ ence between learning about skills and the training in using them. It is frequently said tha t learning about skills takes place "off the job" in the classroom, but training in using th ese skills takes place "on the job", by means of such activities as practice in the workshop.

It is always difficult to evaluate the costs and savings of a training programme. The success of a programme depends not only on the methods used but also on the quality of the s taff who do the training. (75) A company can often check savings in time and cost by examini ng the work performed by the workers and technicians who have completed a training programme. The evaluation of management training is much more complex (复杂) than that.
