Part II Reading Comprehension (15 minutes)

(1)Directions : In this part, you will have 15 minutes to .go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.For questions 1 - 7, mark Y (for YES ) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for NO ) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage.For questions 8 - 10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Build up Your V ocabularyExactly what do you do during a normal day? How do you spend your time? Paul T. Rankin very much wanted an answer to that question To get it, he asked sixty-eight individuals to keep an accurate, detailed record of what they did every minute of their waking hours. When he consolidated his findings, he discovered that the average individual spent 70 percent of his waking time doing one thing only communication. That meant either reading, writing, speaking or listening.Put that evidence alongside of the research findings uncovered by the Human Engineering Laboratories. In exploring aptitudes and careers involving, among other things, data from 30,000 vocabulary tests given yearly, they discovered that big incomes and big vocabularies go together. V ocabulary, more than any other factors yet known, predicts financial success.And it all fits. Each word you add to your vocabulary makes you a better reader, writer, speaker and listener. Furthermore, linguistic scientists are quick to point out that we actually think with words. If that is so, new words make us better thinkers as well as communicators. No wonder more words are likely to mean more money. What better reason for beginning right now to extend your vocabulary? Take reading. What exactly do you read? Common sense says you read words. Research confirms that fact. "Vocabulary in context" contributes 39 percent to comprehension. That's more than any other factor isolated and studied even more than intelligence. And "word in parts" contributes more to speed of reading than any other factor. In short, your efforts to improve vocabulary will pay off in both comprehension and speed.Suppose, as you're reading along, you come across a strange word lumtebs.Did you find yourself stopping for a closer look at lumtebs? Pardon the spelling slip. That's actually the word stumble (偶然发现).The letters just got mixed around. Obviously you now know that strange words do slow you down -- or even stop derstand, "eschew

garrulity" or "avoiding talking too much".What you need is a vital, dynamic approach to vocabulary building. Hybrid ( 混合种) corn combines the best qualities of several varieties to ensure maximum productivity. A hybrid approach to vocabulary should, in the same way, ensure maximum results. That's why you should use the CPD formula.Through ContextWhen students in a college class were as

(1)Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.Questions{TSE}are based on the following passage.The traditional wedding VOW "to stay together till death do us part" is becoming outdated in most western countries as divorce rates continue to rise steadily. In the US, for example, the1 for1978 show one divorce for every two marriages; in that year, over a million couples had their marriages2, often at high financial and social cost.One factor behind the3rise in divorce, rotes, according to sociologists, is the changing status of women, More and more women are continuing to work after marriage, thus remaining4 independent. What's more, they are becoming5tolerant of husbands who treat them as subordinates. Another important factor is the6relaxation of divorce law in many states. It is now7easy to obtain a divorce on the8of irretrievable breakdown of marriage. While divorce is often the only satisfactory solution married couples who can no longer stand the sight of each other, it can have a 9 effect on their kids. It is10that one in four children in the United States currently lives with only one parent. Many such children grew up to be emotionally unstable to cope with the pressures of modern society. They are the principal victims of divorce.

Part IV Reading Comprehension Reading in Depth (35 minutes)

(1)Questions {TSE} are based on the following passage.Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in the history books are great conquerors and generals and soldiers, whereas the people who really helped civilization forward are never mentioned at all. We do not know who first set a broken leg, or launched a seaworthy boat, or Calculated the length of the year, or manured(施肥于) a field; but we know all about the killers and destroyers.People think a great deal of them, so much that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in battle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as conquerors. It is just possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight, so do savages; hence to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized. Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently -- this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done -- is not being civilized. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some ways of settling their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side, and then saying that that side which has killed most has won. And not only has it won, but, because it has won, it has been in the right. For that is what going to war means; it means saying that might is right.That is what the story of mankind has on the whole been like. Even our own age has fought the two greatest wars in history, in which millions of people were killed or mutilated. And while today it is true that people do not fight and kill each other in the streets -- while, that is to say, we have got to the stage of keeping the rules and behaving properly to each other in daily life -- nations and countries have not learnt to do this yet, and still behave like savages.{TS}The first sentence of the passage tells us that___________

A. most history books were written by conquerors, generals and soldiers

B. those who really helped civilization forward are not mentioned in any history book

C. conquerors, generals and- soldiers should not be mentioned in history books

D. history books tells us far more about conquerors and soldiers than about those who really helped civilization forward

(4)The author says that civilized people should___________

A. not have any quarrels to settle

B. settle their quarrels without fighting

C. not fight when there are no quarrels to Settle

C. Those who are right should fight against those who are wron

D. Those who fight believe that the winner is right and the loser wron

(6)Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Questions{TSE}are based on the following passage. A strange thing, about humans is their capacity for blind rage. Rage is presumably an emotion resulting from survival instinct, but the surprising thing about it is that we do not deploy (对付) it against other animals. If we encounter a dangerous wild animal " a poisonous snake or a wild cat-- we do not fly into a temper. If we are unarmed, we show fear and attempt to back away; if we are suitably armed, we attack, but in a rational manner not in a rage. We reserve rage for our own species. It is hard to see any survival value in attacking one's own, but if we take account of the long competition which must have existed between our own subspecies" and others like Neanderthal man- indeed others still-more remote from us than Neanderthal man -- human rage becomes more comprehensible.In our everyday language and behavior there are many reminders of those early struggles. We are always using the words "us and them". "Our" side is perpetually trying to do down the "other" side. In games we artificially create other subspecies we can attack. The opposition of "us" and them" is the touchstone of the two party system of "democratic" politics. Although there are no very serious consequences to many of these modem psychological representations of the "us and them" emotion, it is as well to remember that the original aim was not to beat the other subspecies in a game but to exterminate it. The readiness

with which humans allow themselves to be regimented(严密编组) has permitted large armies to be formed, which, taken together with the "us and them" blind rage, has led to destructive(毁灭性的) clashes within our subspecies itself. The First World War is an example in which Europe divided itself into two imaginary subspecies. And there is a similar extermination battle now in Northern Ireland.The idea that there is a religious basis for this clash is illusory, for not even the Pope has been able to control it. The clash is much more primitive than the Christian religion, much older in its emotional origin. The conflict in Ireland is unlikely to stop until a greater primitive fear is imposed from outside the community, or until the combatants become exhausted.{TS}According to the author, the surprising aspect of human anger is________

A. that we reserve anger for mankind

B. its lengthy and complex development

C. that we do not fly into a temper more often

D. a conflict that is now going on in Northern Ireland

(7)The passage suggests that_________

A. the emotional origin of the war in Ireland is lost in time

B. B historically, we have created an "us" versus "them" society

C. humans have had a natural disinclination toward formal grouping

D. the First World War is an example of how man has always avoided domination

(8)From the passage we can infer that__________

A. games are psychologically unhealthy

B. any artificially-created suBspecies would Be our enemy

C. the artificial creation of a suBspecies unlike us is something that never happens

D. the real or imagined existence of an opposing suBspecies is inherent in man's activities

(9)The author Believes that a religious explanation for the war in Northern Ireland is_________

A. founded in historical fact

B. apparent

C. misleading

D. proBaBly accurate

(10)The Best title for this passage would Be________

A. Man's Anger Against Rage

B. Early Struggles of Angry Man

You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.More surprising, perhaps, than the current difficulties of traditional marriage is the fact that marriage itself is alive and1. As Skolnick notes, Americans are a marrying people --2to Europeans, more of us marry and we marry at a younger age.3, after a decline in the early 1970s, the4of marriage in the United States is now5. Even the divorce rate needs to be taken in this pro-marriage context -- some 80 percent of6individuals remarry.7, marriage remains by far the preferred way of life for the vast majority of people in our remarry. What has changed more than marriage is the nuclear family. Twenty-five years ago, the8 American family consisted of a husband, a wife, and two or three children.9, there are many marriages in which couples have decided not to have any children. And there are many marriages where at10some of the children are from the wife's11 marriage, or the husband's, or both. Sometimes these children spend all of their time with one parent from the12marriage;13they are shared between the two former parents. Thus, one can find every type of family arrangement. There are marriages14children; marriages with children from only the15 marriage; marriages with " full-time" children from both the present and former marriage; 16with "full-time" children from the present marriage and "part-time" children from former marriages. It is not all that17for a child to have four parents and eight grandparents! These are18changes from the traditional nuclear family.19 even so, even in the midst of all this,20one constant: most Americans spend most of their adult lives married.{TS}

【线索词】“vocabulary in context”;“word in parts”【定位处】第四段第五至七句

【线索词】most college students 【定位处】Through Context下首段

That,s why you should use the CPD formula。接下来文章分别介绍了CPD词汇学习法的三个方面。最后两段中,作者先是强调如何通过CPD Formula获得词汇学习的最大效率,继而发出使用CPD Formula的倡议。可见本文的写作目的就是为了教授学习者如何通过CPD Formula扩大词汇量,故答案为Y.

【设题处】主旨处设题(8) :

【线索词】not consult the dictionary before 【定位处】Through the Dictionary下首段末句【解析】a tentative definition。本题涉及到有关查字典的建议,从而将题目出处定位到Through the Dictionary部分。该部分首段末句提到:只有经过思考,尝试着给出生词的释义之后才能查字典证实。自己是否正确。题干中的is advised that you not consult the dictionary before为原文中的倒装结构Only after…should you的同义转述:用before替代afar调换了两个步骤的先后顺序,用get替换了come up with,故本空应填a tentative definition.

【设题处】倒装处设题(9) :

【线索词】consulting the dictionary 【定位处】Through the Dictionary下第二段首句和第四句

【解析】a better memory。

【解析】选[A]。语义衔接题。由空后的remarry可知,主语应是离过婚的人,故选[A]。

[B]separated“分开的”;[C] isolated“孤立的”;[D]broken“破碎的”。(9) :D

【解析】选[D]。逻辑衔接题。空前的句子提到结婚率上升,空后的句子提到婚姻仍是大多数人所喜欢的生活方式,故前后两个句子之间是因果关系,只有[O]Thus构成因果关系,故为答案。(10) :A

【解析】选[A]。语义衔接题。上句提到比婚姻(marry)变化更大的是核心家庭,即小家庭(the nuclear family)。与此相比,在25年前由丈夫、妻子和两三个孩子组成的家庭应该是典型的美国家庭,故选[A]。[B]conservative“保守的”:[C]traditional“传统的”;[D]fashionable “时尚的”。(11) :D

【解析】选[D]。逻辑衔接题。前面提到25年前典型的美国家庭一般有两三个孩子,空后提到许多夫妻决定不要孩子,这是在拿过去和现在作对比,故[D]为答案。(12) :A

【解析】选[A]。语义衔接题。根据上下文可推知,许多家庭里至少有几个孩子是来自其父母以前的婚姻家庭,这里考查的是对at构成的短语的辨析。at least“至少”;at most“最多”;at best“至多”;at worst“最坏”,故[A]符合文意。(13) :C

【解析】选[C]。语义衔接题。根据上下文推测,该句是说许多孩子来自父母以前的婚姻家庭,故[C]previous“早先的,以前的”符合文意。[A]primitive“原始的,古老的”;[B]prior “优先的,在前的”;[D]preliminary“预备的,初步的”。(14) :D

[B]unusual(20) :A

【解析】选[A]。语义衔接题。从文章中所描述的现代婚姻的情况来看,现在的家庭和传统的核心家庭已经有了很大的变化,[A]enormous“巨大的,极大的符合文意。[B]considerable“相当大的,通常与不可数名词或amount之类表数量的词连用。[C]numerous“许多的,无数的,通常指数量。[D]giant“巨大的,一般用来修饰体积。Part ⅥTranslation (5 minute)

【答案】Despite the wonderful acting/In spite of the wonderful acting

【解析】本题考查对despite和in spite of用法白勺掌握。“精妙的演技”与后面的well-developed plot(构思巧妙的情节)是由and连接的并列成分.由此可知,本句中的“尽管”不能用连词来表达,而只能用介词despite或介词短语in spite of。(2) :

【答案】the extent of the damage caused by the fire/the extent of the damage that the fu-e caused 【解析】本题考查对定语从句或过去分词作定语的掌握。表示“损害的程度”,一般用the extent of the damage;“火灾造成的”可以翻译成定语从句,也可以直接用过去分词作后置定语。(3) : 【答案】do the nurses want a pay increase

【解析】本题考查对倒装结构的掌握。含有否定意义的词或短语在句中作状语时,如位于句首,则其所在句要求部分倒装。本句中not only(不仅)明显含有否定意义,故其所在的句子需要部分倒装,应将助动词do提到主语the nurses之前.(4) :

【答案】otherwise we would have telephoned him

【解析】本题考查对虚拟语气的掌握。句中的0therwise?否则”是对前面所述事实的否定,实际上相当于一个与过去事实相反的虚拟条件句,即:If we had known his telephone number,因此后面句子应该采用相应的虚拟语气,谓语动词用would have done的形式。(5) :

【答案】had interrupted me that evening

【解析】本题考查对interrupt用法的掌握。interrupt意为“打断(某人)的讲话,打扰”,“打扰某人”可用interrupt sb.来表达:因为interrupt发生在本句中的动词was之前,所以用had interrupted。

专家解析英语四级考试历年阅读真题(一)

2洛基英语,中国在线英语教育领导品牌 2007.12阅读第一篇 Passage One Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year. As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface. A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?”“No,”she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.” I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided”by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it. Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter’s experience. While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices. 注意:此部分试题请*考试&大在答题卡2上作答。 57. What do we learn from the first paragraph? A) A lot of distractions compete for children’s time nowadays. B) Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities. C) Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time.

Q: Who is the speaker?

As a manager, Tiffany is responsible for interviewing applicants for some of the positions with her company .During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,” Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different” behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding . He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting(避开) your eyes. “I was just thrown off by the lack of ye contact; not realizing it was cultural,” Tiffany says. “I missed out ,but will not miss that opportunity again.” Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our under-standing of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions . Hire Advantage At a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult ,employers who can eliminate invalid biases(偏爱) from the process have a distinct advantage .My company, Mindsets LLC ,helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots .
