Unit 3 在麦当劳的第一天
第一天，我早早地便来上班了。有人给我拿来工作帽和围裙，接着一位热心的麦当劳员工向我解释如何操作收银机。
收银机上有各种色彩和名称的按钮，对于不熟悉它的人来说有点想是飞机的控制面板。每个按钮都代表了不同食物，如巨无霸、水果派、麦香鱼、等等。除了这些，还有各式套餐和其他特价品种。如果有人点了一份套餐但同时还需要一份特价食品，那么你就需要按另一个按钮。
对于一个新手而言，总还会有一些事不容易搞清楚。按要求你要在顾客点餐之后询问他/她是否需要甜点或饮料。当然，你不能做一个过于主动的推销员，而是要间接地表达你的意思。向孩子和上了年纪的妇女强行推销食品是不允许的。
我了解到，将带有“麦当劳”字样的薯条盒正对顾客摆放很重要，因为那样顾客能很准确无误地接受到广告信息。将饮料放在顾客托盘的右方位置也很重要，原因是绝大多数顾客惯于使用右手，因此托重物时右手更有力。
第一位顾客站在了我的面前。“我想要一个吉士汉堡、一包薯条、一杯浓奶昔。”她说。“需要再来点甜点吗？”我尽可能地按麦当劳的方式来促销。
“不用了，谢谢。”就这样，我的第一次推销以失败告终。
如果我在收银机上找不到正确的按钮，一位总是对“临时工”特别关照的麦当劳工作人员会前来帮我。
这样的帮助非常重要，特别是在怒找不到套餐按钮的时候，或是当你按下了计算需付总金额的按钮却发觉总额与找零显示已经从收银机的小小屏幕上彻底消失了的时候。
接着，我得适应如何将薯条倒进包装盒，适应如何正确地按饮料的按钮。每当顾客点了巨无霸或其他汉堡之后，我得大声提醒生产间人员多做些这类食品。我还得检查包装盒上的日期看看是否过了保质期，如果过了食物就得让掉……
这就是我在麦当劳工作的第一天，也是我工作经历中最为难忘的一天。
Unit 4 购物的乐趣
每周去购物是我的乐趣之一。我喜欢想象手推着购物车在超市里闲逛，喜欢什么酒拿什么。然而，这个过程并不总是如此激动人心。
首先，要取辆手推车并不容易。人们在设计手推车时不只是要求它能装各
种形状、大小的商品，要从一列停放好的购物车中取出一辆并非易事，往往需要两个强壮男子的帮助。
下一件需要注意的事情就是女性往往在购物时没有特定的行走路线。你常常会发觉你的妻子莫名其妙地失踪了。十分钟后你好不容易在一个远处的角落里找到了她，可她还反过来问你：“亲爱的，你刚才去哪儿了？”
超市经理往往要参加过一些培训，学习如何诱导顾客以他们难以承受的高价买些他们并非真正需要的商品。而我初来乍到，往往被他们的伎俩所蒙蔽，常常从货架上大把大把地拿东西。而妻子则常常提醒我：“亲爱的，把它放回去。”“你以前试过这个，可你不喜欢啊。“别，这太贵了。”
买完了以星期所需的东西，最后一道关就是付账。千万别去人少的柜台结账，那边往往聚集了一些填写支票结账的人。他们常常是等到货款总数已经算好才开始急急忙忙地在手提包里翻找支票。总算找到了，却又不知道今天是几号，还得再问一遍该付多少钱，然后又忘了在支票背后填写地址。要是以为那些办好就万事大吉的话你就错了。收银员仔细检查完支票，铃响了，你还得再等会儿，因为超市总监很快就会赶来，说这张支票没问题。
接着轮到我们了。这回收银员小姐的结账速度快得让我们都没有时间准备支票付账。好在帮忙打包的人态度不错，对我们报以友好的微笑。
总算回到开阔的外部世界中，不料有一只鸡蛋破了，蛋黄一直顺着裤腿往下淌。这时，我又听见妻子在大叫：“天哪，亲爱的，当心手推车。”这就是购物。
Unit 7 打扫你的房间
只有当儿女从大学回来过圣诞节时，父母们才真正感到代沟的存在。
“南希，你从学校回来都三天了，怎么连房间都不打扫？”
“老妈啊，我们在学校里从来不打扫的。”
“很好，但那是在学校啊，南希。在家里，我和你爸爸都希望你能把自己的房间打扫干净。”
“在学校和在家有什么不一样呢？那是我的房间“
“我知道，亲爱的，这对妈妈来说并不那么重要，可是你爸爸非常害怕瘟疫。他今天早上说，如果我们国家真有地方爆发瘟疫的话，肯定是从你房间开始。”

我和你爸爸当然担心了，但现在我们更担心你房间的污染，你回来后还没整理过床铺呢。
我在学校宿舍里从来不整理床铺。
我知道你不，而且，妈妈相信你一定是把省下的时间用来学习了。可我们任然抱有这样的老观念，就是早上要叠被子，而且摆脱不了。你在家住的时间也不长，为什么不能为了我们把床整理一下呢？
我们没有再把你当小孩儿看待。可是你把衣服都乱扔在地板上，就很难让我们觉得你已经长大了。
我没有吧所有的衣服都扔在地板上，地板上的只是昨天穿过的。
那原谅妈妈夸大其词。那你书桌上那些脏盘子、空饮料罐又怎么解释呢？难道是收集起来做科学实验的？
妈，你们不理解我们，你们的父母从小就教育你们要打扫房间，可我们这一代人从来不把这种事当回事，重要的是一个人想些什么事。
没有人能比我和你爸爸重视教育的了，特别是现在收费又那么高，可是，我们就不明白，生活在一团糟的环境中又怎么能提升你的思想境界呢？
那是因为你们觉得有些东西比其他事情更重要。你们宁可让我整理床铺、收拾衣服，也不愿让我成为一个思想自由、独立自主的人。好吧，如果打扫房间对你们来说这么重要的话，按我就打扫。但我想让你们知道，你们毁了我的美好假期。
Unit 8 女性不理解男性之处
一天晚上在驱车回家的路上，伊兰突然冒出一个想法：“罗杰，你知道吗，我们认识已经整整六个月了。”
“ 天哪，已经六个月了！”罗杰听到伊兰的话大吃一惊。
