Directions:There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D.You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Empowering workers constitutes the first step toward a stronger economy and stronger citizenry. It is a vital step toward overcoming inequality in American society. During the 1980s, the need for better wages for all workers increased as women, traditionally secondary earners, assumed greater responsibility for their own and their children’s well-being. Yet the ability to raise families to a decent living standard through wage work decreased; real wages fell for most workers. And the Federal Government enacted no new policies to facilitate the integration of work and family, as working women and working families suffered a loss in political power as well.

Black or Hispanic women are four times as likely to be low-wage workers as are white men with comparable skills and experience. White women are more than three times as likely as white men to be low-wage workers, and black or Hispanic men more than one-and-a-half times as likely. More than half of all low-wage workers are the only wage workers in their families, or live alone.

Employment no longer provides an escape from poverty. More than eight million working adults are poor; two million of them work full-time, year-round. More than seven million poor children have at least one working parent. When that one working parent is a low-wage worker, the children have no better chance of escaping from

poverty than if the parent were not working at all; more than two-fifths of such children are poor.

Even if generous income assistance were available, the wages employers pay would be held to a minimum. In addition, policies such as tax credits for working parents do nothing to increase the political power of working women and men.

Our research shows that unionization is among the most effective strategies for raising pay, especially for women and minority men. Being a union member, or being covered by a collective-bargaining agreement, raised 1984 wages by $ 1.79 per hour for Hispanic men, $ 1.32 for black men, $ 1.26 for Hispanic women, $ 1.01 for black women, $ 0.68 for white women, and $ 0.41 for white men, when all other factors, such as occupation, industry, firm size, education and experience were held constant. In percentage terms, the union increase was more than 15 percent for blacks and Hispanics, 11 percent for white women, and 4 percent for white men.

Passage Two

We all know DNA has the ability to identify individuals but, because it is inherited, there are also regions of the DNA strand which can relate an individual to his or her family (immediate and extended), tribal group and even an entire population. Molecular Genealogy(宗谱学)can use this unique identification provided by the genetic markers to link people together into family trees. Pedigrees(家谱)based on such genetic markers can mean a break-through for family trees where information is incomplete or missing due to adoption, illegitimacy or lack of records. There are many communities and populations which have lost precious records due to tragic events such as the fire in the Irish courts during Civil War in 1921 or American slaves for whom many records were never kept in the first place.

The main objective of the Molecular Genealogy Research Group is to build a database containing over 100,000 DNA samples from individuals all over the world. These individuals will have provided a pedigree chart or at least four generations and a small blood sample. Once the database has enough samples to represent the world genetic make-up, it will eventually help in solving many issues regarding genealogies that could not be done by relying only on traditional written records. Theoretically, any individual will someday be able to trace his or her family origins through this database.

In the meantime, as the database is being created, molecular genealogy can already verify possible or suspected relationships between individuals. “For example, if two men sharing the same last name believe that they are related, but no written record proves this relationship, we can verify this possibility by collecting a sample of DNA from both and looking for common markers (in this case we can look primarily

at the Y chromosome(染色体),”explains George Green, a member of the BYU Molecular Genealogy research team.

46. People in a large area may possess the same DNA thread because__________.

A.DNA is characteristic of a region

B. they are beyond doubt of common ancestry

A. genetics has achieved a breakthrough

B. genetic information contained in DNA can be revealed now

C. each individual carries a unique record of who he is and how he is related to

others

D. we can use DNA to prove how distant an individual is to a family, a group or a

population

48. The Molecular Genealogy Research Group is building a database for the purpose

of ___________.

A. offering assistance in working out genealogy-related problems

B. solving many issues without relying on traditional written records

C. providing a pedigree chart of at least four generations in the world

D. confirming the assumption that all individuals are of the same origin

49. If two men suspect for some reason they have a common ancestor, __________.

A. we can decide according to their family tree

B. we can find the truth from their genetic markers

C. we can compare the differences in their Y chromosome

D. we can look for written records to prove their relationship

50. Which of the following can not be inferred from the passage?

A. We are a walking, living, breathing record of our ancestors.

B. Many American slaves did not know who their ancestors were.

Passage Three

The world can be a harsh place for your eyes. There are lots of work or recreational activities that may increase your risk of eye injury and strain, including some that may seem surprising. By being aware of the possible risks, you can protect yourself from eye damage and strain.

Certain work situations, including handling hazardous chemicals, using power tools, and being exposed to flying particles, have a high risk of eye damage. In these situations, it is important to follow your workplace safety measures, wear proper eye protection (this will vary according to the work situation), and know the location of the nearest eyewash or first aid station.

In some jobs, the risks are unexpected. If you work with computers and VDTs (video display terminals) for more than an hour each day, you are at a high risk of eyestrain. This can lead to headaches, blurred vision, and difficulty working. Try to take a break from computer use for fifteen minutes during each two-hour period, or for ten minutes per hour during intensive work. Check your screen to make sure there is no glare (from a window or lamp) on the screen. Usually, the screen should be 10 to 20 degrees below your eye level. Your optometrist can recommend a set-up for your screen and work station that would be best for you. The Canadian Association of Optometrists also recommends that you get an eye exam every year and tell your optometrist you work at a computer or VDT.

The sports and leisure activities you enjoy may put you at higher risk for eye injuries. Most sports have some risk for eye injury. Those with the highest risk are contact sports, racquet sports, and sports involving a ball or puck. Before starting a new sport, find out what kind of eye protection is recommended, and always wear it. You should be able to find this information from sports-governing bodies, coaches, or sports stores. If you enjoy outdoor sports or activities, make sure your eyes are protected from ultraviolet (UV) light with a pair of sunglasses or goggles certified to block UVA and UVB light.

Contact lenses can also be a source of eye injures of infection. Using dirty or damaged lenses can lead to eye infection, scratches on the cornea (eye surface), or

other eye problems. To reduce your risk, always clean and store your lenses as recommended by your optometrist or eye doctor. Do not share lenses or solutions, and throw away your solutions when they reach their expiry date, or one month after they are first opened, whichever is sooner. Don’t use your lenses for longer than recommended (i.e., if you have daily disposable lenses, don’t try to make them last for a week). If you think you might have eye damage or an infection, or if anything else worries you, stop using the lenses and check with your optometrist. It is a good idea to have a pair of glasses on hand in case you need to take the lenses out.

51. In certain work situations, to protect your eyes, you should do as following

EXCEPT _______.

A. take a rest often

B. follow your workplace safety measures

C.know the location of the nearest eyewash

D.wear proper eye protection

52. The author advises that the people who work with computers should _______.

A.take a break from computer use for fifteen minutes during each two-hour

period

B.take a break from computer use for ten minutes during each one-hour

intensive work

C.put the screen 10 to 20 degree below your eye level

D.A, B and C

53.According to the passage, which sport has highest risk for eye injury?

A. swimming

B. football

C. cycling

D. jogging

54. When should the daily disposable lenses be thrown away?

A. When they reach their expiry date.

B. One month after they are first opened

C. No longer than a week

D. More than a week

55. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

A. How to Wear Contact Lenses

B. High Risks of Sports

C. Improving Your Eyesight

D. Avoiding Eye Injury

Passage Four

A scientist who does research in economic psychology and who wants to predict the way in which consumers will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on resources of consumers and on the motives that tend to encourage or discourage money spending.

If an economist was asked which of three groups borrow most, people with rising incomes, stable incomes, or declining incomes—he would probably answer: those with declining incomes. Actually, in the years 1947-1950, the answer was: people with rising incomes. People with declining incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional assumptions are that if people who have money expected prices to go up, they will hasten to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that this is not always true. The typical attitude was expressed by the wife of a mechanic in an interview at a time of rising prices, “In a few months,” she said, “we’ll have to pay more for meat and milk; we’ll have less to spend on other things.” Her family had been planning to buy a new car but they postponed this purchase. Furthermore, the rise in prices that has already taken place may arouse resentment and buyer’s resistance may be aroused. This is shown by the following typical comment: “I just don’t pay these prices; they are too high.”

The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America. Investigations conducted at the same time in Great Britain, however, yielded results that were more in agreement with traditional assumptions about saving and spending patterns. The condition most conducive to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, and they are likely to buy. Thus, it

appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology.

56. It can be inferred from the passage that if one wants to predict the way consumers

will spend their money, he should_______.

A. rely on traditional approaches

B. try to encourage or discourage consumers

C. carry out investigations

D. do researches in a laboratory first

57.What is the main idea of paragraph two?

A. Consumers’ behavior in time of price increase.

B. Price increase stimulates people to hasten to buy things.

C. What consumers normally buy when they expect prices to go up.

D. Consumers’ attitude towards price change.

58. According to the survey, if Englishmen expect prices to go up, they will

________.

A. spend less

B. buy more

C. buy only what they need

D. postpone buying

59. From the results of the surveys, the writer concludes that_______.

A. maintaining stable prices is a correct business policy

B. the saving and spending patterns in Great Britain are better than those in

America.

C. the consumers always expect prices to remain stable

D. consumers should adapt to the change of prices

60. Which of the following statements is always TRUE according to the surveys

mentioned in the passage?

A. Consumers will put off buying things if they expect prices to decrease.

B. Consumer behavior is influenced by the price condition.

C. Consumers will spend their money quickly if they expect prices to increase.

D. Traditional assumptions about earning and spending are reliable

Directions: For this part, you are asked to write a summary of the following passage in no more than 80 words on the Answer Sheet.

We reached a point where the path crossed a motor road under construction, and we could see that it ran through a cutting made in the side of the steep hill. Men were working in the cutting, and there were more men far up the hillside above it. The bed of the cutting was full of huge boulders which were to form the foundation of the road.

Over these boulders we picked our way with difficulty, jumping from one to the other like so many goats. In the middle of them I stopped to take a photograph, while the others went on ahead. Suddenly I heard shouts, followed by a dull sound of an explosion from the hillside above me. Looking up, I found I was now alone in the

cutting. The smoke of a blasting charge floated out against the blue sky, and an enormous rock was bounding savagely down the hill.

I had no doubt where it was going to land. It was going to land on me. This opinion was clearly shared by the men who had released the boulder, as they were gesticulating wildly two hundred yards above me. I made a prodigious leap from my rock to the next. The galloping boulder bumped against the hillside, kicked up a cloud of dust and slightly changed direction. It was still coming straight for me. There was nothing to be done but to take cover if I could find any; otherwise the prospect before me was one of almost certain death. I glanced hastily around. Just as I was resigning myself to inevitable disaster, I noticed a narrow opening between two rocks quite near me. I reached this in time, wedged myself in and shut my eyes. With a tremendous thud the mass of rock struck the ground and came to rest a few feet away from me. It hardly splintered at all, and none of the splinters came my way. It was indeed a miraculous escape.
