I found her along a road, with a heavy 36 wrapped around her neck, still 37 rotten (腐烂的) boards from her doghouse. Not only did I know that most of the town people had already ignored her, 38 the place where I found her, but I knew that if she had gotten into the woods, the “cross” that she 39 behind her would have wrapped itself around a tree 40 starvation or thirst killed her.

She leads a(n) 41 life now. Her eyes sparkle and she has learned to wag her tail in greeting. She has stopped flinching( 畏缩)when I make a sudden 42 , as she knows now that I won' t beat her. It' s not clear yet whether she'll 46 here or whether I'll find her a loving home where she can 47 more individual attention than I can give her, but one thing is certain, this is a bit of stolen “property” which is never returning to you. So 48 me, plead with the court that she is rightfully yours... I' m convinced that this is the 49 “ crime” (罪行) I've ever committed. Hardly anything has delighted me more than the day when I stole your dog. If we have one special day to celebrate together, it is the day I stole your dog and the day she stole my 50 .

Two people are walking towards each other along a narrow pavement --- who gives way?

If it is you, you fall into the 25 percent of people who prefer to step aside. Another 25 percent like to pass first, making the other person stand to one side. The remaining 50 percent make up the third type of pedestrian and vary their strategy.

The findings come from study in which researchers from the Technical University of Munich paired up 20 strangers and asked them to walk towards each other without colliding and without speaking.

The volunteers also filled in personality questionnaires and were measured and weighed.

Interestingly, physical factors such as age, height and gender seemed to have no bearing on pavement etiquette(礼仪). Nor did qualities such as extraversion or shyness, the Journal of Experimental Psychology reports. In other words, some of us seem to be simply born to push past.

A second experiment revealed t hat the person who passes first isn?t as rude as they may initially appear. It seems they do tend to adjust their path --- just not enough to avoid a collision. As a result, it is only when the second person moves out of the way that the problem is solved.

Etiquette expert William Hanson said that the custom of men walking on the outside of the pavement to protect women from traffic and other dangers has fallen by the wayside.

Mr Hanson said: …Traditionally, men let the woman they were accompanying walk clo sest to the building, away from the pavement edge.

How to avoid that awkward 'pavement dance'

The German study doesn?t address what to do in the common but embarrassing situation, in which both pedestrians repeatedly dodge out of each other?s way in the sa me direction, giving the impression of dancing together on the pavement.

But Mr Hanson said: …I tend to pick a side of the pavement, stick to it, and politely gesture to the empty space for the stranger to use.?

51. The writer uses the question at the beginning to _____.

A. test the readers? knowledge about pavement etiquette

B. draw the readers? attention to the topic

C. show the importance of giving way

D. invite the readers to answer the question

52. It can be learned from the two experiments that _____.

A. about half of the people try to think of other ways

B. pavement etiquette has much to do with personalities

C. a quarter of people are too rude to give way

D. a collision is unavoidable when two walk to each other

53. Which of following might Mr. Hanson agree with?

A. Men tend to be more considerate to women than before.

B. It?s men?s duty to protect women from traffic dangers.

C. Sticking to one side can help avoid pavement dance.

D. It is embarrassing to dance together on the pavement.

B

China?s local pension funds(养老金)will launch a first wave of making profits in the

national stock market(股市)by the end of this year before an ageing population becomes a difficulty in economy. The government has announced an ambitious plan that could help local governments overcome record-low interest rates and reduce the Chinese stock market?s volatility (波动).

The human resources ministry said that a number of local governments had moved money to the National Social Security Fund, where managers have good reasons to make money in riskier programs, including up to 40 per cent in stocks and stock funds. This first wave will release between Rmb200bn-Rmb400bn ($30bn-$60bn), according to analysts.

The government started drawing up plans for such moves to the NSSF in June last year and the expansion of the NSSF, which held Rmb1.9tn in 2015, will increase its power in the national stock market, reducing the influence of individual investors and probably creating a more stable flow of money into stock markets. If all provinces join the program, that would mean up to Rmb2tn more could flow into stocks. “In theory, it?s a good thing to do and should increase profits,” said Stuart Leckie, Stirling Finance chairman, who has advised the government on pension reform. “But it was mostly done to supp ort the stock market. They?re doing something good for the wrong reasons.”

The Rmb5tn state pension funds managed by local governments are limited to making profits in safe programs such as bank deposits and government bonds. But these have had such low profits that local governments? pension funds became less over the past decade, at a time when more and more are nearing retirement.

The NSSF was founded in 2000 to help some provinces in the north-east but it has seemingly achieved an average profit of nearly 9 per cent per year over the past 15 years, which matches the performance of the more experienced Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. But some economists believe the reforms are not enough to ensure the life quality of the old. “I no longer think the Chinese system can be reformed,” said Peter Diamond, a Nobel Prize winner in economics who co-authored a book on Chinese pension reform. “It must be taken apart and built back from the beginning.”

54.What?s the purpose of the great governmental plan mentio ned at the beginning?

A. To help the stock market go smoothly.

B. To make more profits for the central government.

C. To strength people?s confidence in pension funds

D. To increase the local bank interest rates.

55. What does “wrong reasons” in paragraph 3 actually mean?

A. The governments intended to increase the quantity of pension funds.

B. The governments originally wanted to help the old live longer.

C. The move of pension funds was to improve the stock market.

D. Pension funds may obtain much benefit from money moves.

56. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The present reforms are of much practical use in bettering the life quality of the old.

B. China?s system in pension funds is too perfect to reform compared with that of Canada.

C. The system deserves deep consideration and even needs establishing once again.

D. The reforms are of much urgency to the system being carried out in China.

57. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Pension funds are certain to bring more benefit to the aged.

B. The life of Chinese old people will be improved someday.

C. Pension funds can help people to make profits in China.

D. China?s local pension funds will move to the stock market.

It seems that many college graduates are unsure of what to do with their lives, so they jump back into the college scene by default(违约). But graduate school is costly, time consuming and requires a lot of in-depth study, and also parents will lay down more money and banks will supply more student loans.

However, there are some students who should be pursuing graduate degrees. Teachers, lawyers, doctors, professors and ministers are a few examples of those who will benefit from class work past a bachelor?s degree. Their professions call for additional courses and more specia lization and therefore higher education is a must. Still, all students in general should not adopt the idea that graduate school is necessary for individuals who want to make more money. Working hard right after college can lead to promotions in the future. It seems that it does more good to network or internship(实习)with professionals while pursing a bachelor?s degree than it does to complete a master?s and distant oneself from the world of work.

If a student graduates with a four-year degree and immediately enters the work force , he will most likely start an entry-level pay. In a couple of years this employee will gain seniority and experience, therefore increasing their chance for pay rise. He will learn the information at his job-site that he did not lea rn in school. His bachelor?s degree loan can be immediately chipped away ,and his maturity level can increase as real work related responsibilities set in. But, if the student pursues a master?s degree, he may be able to demand more pay initially when he f inally goes job hunting, but years of serious money making as well as work experience will already be lost.

Students should not shy from the workforce just because uncertainty follows graduation. Those who pursue a graduate degree just because they do not want to leave school and because they view the “real world” as scary should think again. Using graduate studies as a hiding place from the full-time job is a waste of time.

58.College graduates who go to work can _____ than those who pursue graduate degrees.

A. make more money in the future

B. acquire more experience

C. get a better job

D. become more responsible

59.The underlined words “chipped away” can most possibly be replaced by_______.

A. given out

B. set down

C. thrown away

D. paid off

60. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. College graduates shouldn?t pursue graduate degrees

B. College graduates should think twice

C. How can college graduates make more money?

D. Students use graduate school to avoid reality

D

From where I live on the coast of California?s Monterey Peninsula, there is no easy way to go anywhere. We have roads with views that will take your breath away, but few fast lanes. To go north to San Francisco, you take the Old Coast Highway, and then go ahead to 101, a multilane freeway, which, depending on weather and traffic, will eventually get you where you?re going or drive you crazy. But the part I feared most was a narrow two-lane stretch of a road that connected the two. In the south, where I grew up, such roads are called cow trails.

Roads are like people; they have personalities --- colored by how we see and feel about them at particular times. My husband taught me this about roads. Randy was an athlete, body and soul. A high school basketball coach, he loved and worked out with his teams. He was a marathoner who could run miles and not be tired. In 25 years of teaching he rarely had a sick day. And then he had cancer.

So we began another race down another road: a four-year-long marathon to Stanford University Medical Center for surgeries, radiation, chemo and more than a few emergencies. And to get to the hospital we had to travel those impossible roads --- 91 miles, two hours. I hated every minute and inch. I especially hated that traffic-crowded two-lane bottleneck. Then they started construction. Randy never complained. But as he grew weaker, I tried to avoid that cow trail to shorten our drive.

I spent hours with maps but found that there was no getting around it. I had no choice but to drive it. Once, when we were running late for an appointment, I muttered, “I hate this stupid road.”

“Four miles,” he said.

I looked over. His eyes were closed.

“What did you say?” I asked.

“This part of the road,” he said in his calm voice. “It?s only four miles long. That?s easy. You can do anything for four miles.”

I checked the odometer(里程表). He was right. Four miles exactly. I could have sworn it was

20. Suddenly the drive got easier. Four miles was doable and comprehensible. It was the distance we walked in the evening from our house to the beach and back. It was half the length of a mountain trail he loved to hike in Yosemite, with a baby on his back. Four short trips to our local park to play catch with our kids. A part of the 26 miles he once ran in the Big Sur International Marathon. Four miles was nothing --- certainly not a space or time worth wasting in anger when he had only months to live. So I stopped complaining. I started really looking. And there appeared green acres of fields that shined in the sun. Strawberries and roses stand at the roadside. And there was an old white horse watching cars running down the open road.

Those things had always been there, but I had never noticed. Randy taught me how to see them. Now when the road is long and hard, I break it into pieces in my soul. I divide it into four-mile stretches. You can endure anything for four miles --- even find beauty and acceptance along the

way.

61. It can be leant from Paragraph 1 that ______.

A. you can drive crazily on 101 in a fine day

B. the roads are very dangerous and breathtaking

C. the cow trail joined the Old Coast Highway and 101

D. the roads to go north are narrow and rough

62. Which of the following about Randy is NOT right?

A. He had a strong love for playing sports.

B. His poor health was due to 25 years? overwork.

C. He was very ill and could only live for months.

D. He had fought with cancer for about four years.

63. It can be inferred from the last but one paragraph that _____.

A. Four miles was nothing worth wasting in anger.

B. The author didn?t see the beautiful views on roads.

C. Anything is acceptable if you see it differently.

D. The author misread the odometer as 20 miles.

64. What is the message conveyed in the passage?

A. Complains makes no sense.

B. Life is short and time is swift.

C. A merry heart makes a long life.

D. Situations are affected by our attitude.

65. The best title for the passage would be _____

A. Last four miles of roads

B. A stretch of hard road

C. Personalities of roads

D. Beauty along the way

School failure is a process in which a student slips farther and farther behind his peers(同龄

人)and gradually disconnects from the educational system. The end result of school failure is leaving school before graduation. Many cases of school failure happen among students who have the abi l ity and intelligence to succeed but are not able or willing to apply these abilities in the school setting.

P eople who fail in school may feel “stupid”, but emotional or mental health problems and “hidden” learning disorders, not low intelligence, often are the root causes of their inability to meet the standards of a school. The following are some factors that can lead to school failure.

Depression is one of the most common causes of school difficulties. It is a condition that makes people trapped in low spirits for long periods of time, have less energy, and lose interest in studies that normally give them pleasure.

Anxiety is a feeling of excessive worry about a possible danger or an uncomfortable situation that is intense enough to interfere with(妨碍)a person?s ability to concentrate and focus.

Students also may bring their problems at home to school with them. If a student?s family is experiencing violence, unemployment, or any other upsetting situation, it can be difficult for him to concentrate on schoolwork. Many students who are having family problems might have trouble controlling their anger and frustration at school, and they may end up in trouble because of their behavior.

Learning disorders are conditions that interfere with gaining specific academic skills, such as reading or writing. Learning disorders can damage a person?s ability to process or rememb er information.

Students at risk of school failure need to be identified as early as possible in their school careers if they are to receive the help they need. This task usually falls to the teachers and parents. Parents can help by taking a genuine inter est in their children?s school life and attending school events. They should take seriously sudden changes in their children?s behavior, sleeping, or eating. Besides, they should help their child identify what he or she is bad at or good at.

On the other hand, there are a lot of things teachers can do to help those students who fail in school. For example, they can develop learning plans that support the students? strengths, carry out evaluations about their possible learning disabilities, support their learning by teaching them how to study, and encourage them to participate in school activities, such as sports, plays, or clubs, so that they feel they are a part of the school.

Recently, a primary school in Xiangyang, Hubei province has added square dancing to their curriculum, which caused a heated discussion in our school. Students have different views on it.

70% of the students are in favor of it, holding that not only can square dancing help them relax themselves but also it can make them have a slim figure. What?s more, music dance combined with physical exercise is a good way for teenagers to get into shape. However, 30% of the students have the opposite opinion that square dancing is the dance of Dama, which requires less energy. Thus, it is not a good choice for them.

On a personal note, I have strong desire to learn square dancing with classmates in school, for traditional gymnastics is too boring to inspire the students? enthusiasm for working out. In addition, students can learn to cooperate with each other. Maybe this would be a way to build the school spirit with an activity that many students enjoy.(151words)
