Reading第二课时教学设计

ⅠAnalysis of the teaching material

This lesson is a reading passage. It plays a very important role in the learning of this unit. The topic earthquake is related t o Ss’ daily life and all the teaching materials centre on it. In the news report, the passage talks about the signs, the damage and the recovery of Tangshan earthquake. By studying of this passage, the Ss will know more information about earthquake and know how to protect themselves in an earthquake. Thus reduce the losses of earthquakes.

Ⅱ Analysis of the Ss

This passage is related to the Ss’ daily life and the Ss are familiar with the Tangshan earthquake, so they will be interested in it. Besides, they have ever learned the words about earthquake in warming up. So it will be easy for the Ss to learn the passage.

Step1 Lead in(4 minutes)

Show some pictures to the Ss.

Teacher: Before our class, I want to ask you two questions “when you feel happy, what will you do?”“but when you feel not happy, even get angry, what will you do?” Now let’s get to know a man, who is called Mr. Nature. He is very emotional. When he is happy, he stays calm and show us beautiful natural scenery. But when he gets angry, he becomes a troublemaker and causes many natural disasters. Do you know what they are?

Suggested answers: flood, drought, typhoon, earthquake

Purpose of the design: The teacher uses personification to lead in the topic and regard the nature as a person, which can help the Ss to understand the emotional change of the nature. At the same time, it can arouse the Ss’interest to learn the following material.

Teacher: As we all know, an earthquake is a kind of common disasters. It can cause great damage to people. Have you ever experienced an earthquake?

(Ss’ answers.)

Step2 Skimming(15 minutes)

Now, I’ll ask you to read the passage, A NIGHT THE EARTH DIDN’T SLEEP

quickly, then do the following tasks, True or False. In the reading process, you should pay attention to the following tips: First, be quiet. Second, pay attention to the first sentence or last sentence of each paragraph. Third, skim the passage quickly, don’t read it word by word.

Purpose of the design:

⑴Train the Ss’ ability to grasp the detailed information.

⑵Train the Ss’ ability to transform and digest the information.

⑶Train the Ss’ability to get useful information according to the change of the

time.

Step3 Scanning(8 minutes)

Teacher: I’ll give you 5 minutes to read this passage again and divide the whole passage into three parts according to the change of time.

Part1 (para1) Signs before the earthquake

Part2 (para2&3) What happened during the earthquake (damage)

Part3 (para4) The rescue work after the earthquake

Purpose of the design:

⑴Enable the Ss’ reading skills and ask them to get useful information from the first

or last sentence of a paragraph.

⑵Train the Ss’ ability of conclusion and summary, at the same time, it will develop

the Ss’ ability of expressing themselves.

Step4 Play a video(9 minutes)

The teacher will play a video and help the Ss to experience a real situation in an earthquake, which will help the Ss to deepen the impression of destructive earthquakes.

Purpose of the design: Train the Ss’ skills of listening.

Teacher: By studying this passage, we know that the earthquake happened in Tangshan was very terrible and serious. So now I’ll invite you to watch a video and experience the terrible situation.

Teacher: The picture is so horrible, many people believe that “It is always came before a storm.” Is it true?

(Ss’ answers)

Teacher: In fact, before a storm, there are always many signs. So we should pay attention to the change around us and make good preparation for the coming disaster. Then ask the Ss to describe the pictures on page 25, which will help them practice their oral English.

(The teacher and the Ss together describe the picture)

Purpose of the design: Remind the Ss of the signs before an earthquake and ask them prepare for the coming disaster.

Step5 Discussion (group work)(6 minutes)

What should we do or not do if an earthquake happens? Discuss with your partners. (Ss discuss the statements)

Teacher: So now I’ll ask you to discuss the following question “What shall we do or

not do if an earthquake happens?”

If indoors:

Dos:

●Stay in a small room, such as kitchen or bathroom.

●Sit down the desk.

Don’ts:

●Stay on the balcony.

●Stand close to the windows.

●Hide under a piece of heavy furniture.

If outdoors:

●Get into the open and far away from buildings

●Stay away from power lines

●Protect your head by putting something on it

●Run away from the mountains or hills

If in a moving vehicles:

●Stop if it is safe and stay in your car

●Stay away from bridges and tunnels (隧道)

●Avoid stopping under trees, power lines or signs

Teacher: A disaster is very heartless, it will strike any place. On November 22,2014, an earthquake struck Kangding, Sichuan province. It caused much damage. Bu we should remember that as long as we are united, nothing can beat us. So class, please remember, never give up. When others are in trouble, we must lend a helping hand. As an old going says, “When disaster strikes, help comes from all sides.” Because we are a big family.

Purpose of the design:

⑴Train the Ss to cooperate with others and improve their cooperative ability.

⑵Train the Ss to express themselves and improve their spoken English.

⑶Improve the Ss’ courage.

ⅧConclusion and Homework(3 minutes)

Make a brief summary about the text and assign the homework.

阅读教学在英语教学中有非常重要的地位,以培养学生的阅读能力为主要教学目标,为达到这一目标,不仅需要指导学生学习和掌握课文内容所涉及的语言知识,了解课文内容所涉及的文化背景,更重要的是引导学生掌握不同体裁文章的不同阅读方法和技巧,并在各个教学活动中提高语言的综合运用能力。本文课题A night the earth didn’t sleep与学生的生活实际息息相关。我们国家所处的地理位置导致中国是一个地震频发的大国。所以本堂课除了教授学生掌握阅读方法和技巧,培养学生应对自然灾害,特别是地质灾害的能力也是非常重要的。除此之外,阅读也应该注重对学生情感态度价值观的培养,发扬中华民族的优良传统,一方有难,八方支援。鼓励学生积极主动地帮助他人。
