研究还处于初级阶段，研究的手段还不够成熟，理论和实践的成果还不是很多。英
文歌曲翻译是一个艰难的复杂过程。英文歌曲翻译既要跨越歌词中的文化和语言障碍，又要兼顾译词与音乐的关系，要符合音乐的基本规律。本文结合以往的相关研究，通过对英文流行歌曲的界定，从全新的角度阐述英文歌曲翻译的基本原则，揭
示阻碍英文歌曲翻译的各种障碍，接着论述英文歌曲翻译的技巧和方法，最后强调英文歌曲翻译的重要性，目的是更好地促进跨文化交流。

Abstract
With the development of globalization and the acceleration of international communication, English song, as a special form and representation of culture is playing an increasingly important and unique role in interantional diffusion of culture. The domestic relevant studies on song translation are still at an initial stage. It is nearly a new field in which the research method is not adequately mature and the achievements of theory and practice are few. The translation is a difficult and complicated process. When translating English songs into Chinese, translators must go through the difficulties resulting from cultural and linguistic barriers and take into account the relationship between translation and music and integrate Chinese lyrics and the accompanying music.
In conjunction with the previous relevant studies and by confirming the definition of English songs, this thesis first analyzes the basic principles of English song translation from a new perspective and then demonstrates various obstacles hindering the translation of English songs. This thesis also address the ways and kills in English song translation. Finally, the importance of English song translation in promoting intercultural communication is emphasized.

1. Introduction
With the acceleration of globalization and rapid development of economic and cultural communciaiton, the English song, as a unique part of the culture of English countries, is playing an increasingly role in globalizaiton and cross-cultural communication. English songs represent some specific parts of culture, which has great influences on the domestic people, especially on those who are keen on modern English songs. The song is a most popular form of art and culture. Chinese people are also fond of translated versions of English songs. English songs enjoy great popularity in China.
Even though music belongs to all human beings all over the world, regional differences hinder the diffusion of English songs into the whole world in some way. Therefore, it is crucial to translate English songs into Chinese so that more Chinese people will develop enthusiasm
for English songs, learn more about foreign culture and improve their ability in intercultural communication. However, song translation isn’t paid much attention to and is even ignored in
China. Although song translation has developed for about 100 hundred years sin ce the Qing Dynasty, it doesn’t attract much attention from Chinese scholars. The Exploration and Practice in
Translation of Songs by Xue Fan in 2002 firstly addresses the translation of songs theoretically and systematically and makes a comprehensive and systematic analysis of song translation. This thesis will, based on the previous studies and researches, summarize the way of English songs translation and provide some skills for it.
This thesis will make a summary of some previous relevant theories
on translation. And then it will demonstrate the application of these theories in title and lyrics in song translation. Meanwhile, this thesis will point out the problem in translation and provide some practical techniques for translation. In the end, the thesis will put some emphasis on the significance of English song translation.
2. Relevant Theories on Translation
With the developement of globalization and the acceleration of intercultural communication, the translation of songs is becoming more and more urgent and necessary. In order to promote the diffusion of English songs, many scholars have been devoted to applying studies on translation into how to translate English songs. They have put forward many outstanding theories on

translation which have practical guidance for English song translation.
2.1 Hans J. Vermeer’s Translation Theory
Hans J. Vermeer assumes that translation is a kind of human action. According to action theory, Verneer regards human action as purposeful and intentional behavior taking place in a given time and place. According to Vermeer, translation is a kind of transfer in which verbal or nonverbal signs are transfered from one language to another. Since the song is a main and unqiue part of culture, song translation involves many cultural factors. Therefore, while tranlatiing, translators must take into consideration some cultural elements and embed song
translation into a given culture. The most striking contribution made by Vermeer is making a bridege between translation theory and translation practice. In Vermeer’s theory, translation action is based on a source text composed of verbal or nonverbal elements.
2.2 Skopos Theory on Translation Theory
Skopos is a word meaning “purpose” from Greece. Skopos theory applies the notion of
Skopos to translation. What determines translation process is the purpose of translation. Purpose of translation action can be divided
into three types: the general purpose addressed by the translator, such as making a living or satisfying the interest in translation, the communicative purpose by the target text, such as helping the reader to
understand the source text and achieve communication and the instructive by translation strategies, procedures and skills such as instructing people to translate literally or translate some specific types of text.
Skopos rule is the top-ranking for translation. In accordance with Skopos rule, every text is produced with a given purpose and thus translating a given text should enable the translated text to serve the original purpose of the text and function precisely in the way people
wold like it to function.
Precisely speaking, it is required in Skopos theory that one should translate consciously and consistently and respect the target text fully.
2.3 Eugen e A. Nida’s Translation Theory
Nida’s translation theory experiences three main stages of developing: descriptive linguistics, communicative theory and sociosemiotics.
Nida holds that languages can be transformed and translated with
each other. Reconstructing the original form and semantic structure by fulfilling equivalence between langauges and cultures

enables people to communicate freely and effectively with each other. He contributes to the creation of a new sight in global communication
and understanding between people of different languages and cultures.
Nida insists that equivalence inner translation should be understood
as proximity rather than total identity of mechanical meaning. Proxity values the degree of closeness to functional identity. There is no
existence of absolutely equivalent translation. Equivalent translation only stands for a certain degree of functional equivalence. Therefore, Nida put forward the concept of functional equivalence as opposed to formal equivalence, which is also the most valuable contribution to translation theory.
3. The Chinese Translation of English Songs
Although studies on translation have developed a lot in the past few years, more and more scholars were devoted to this field. Translation actually face some inevitable difficulties particularly caused by linguisitic differences. Chinese and English, belonging to different language families, have many differences formally and semantically, which bring about great difficulties for translation. Translation of English songs into Chinese is even more difficult than the ordinary translation in that it involves many factors both linguistic and cultural. Linguistic and cultural barriers in combination with music constrains make song translation a big challenge for translators. The following sections will concentrate on some specific skills for English song translation including the translation of song titles, sentences, texts and hythm.
3.1 The Translation of the Titles of songs
English songs are mainly popular among Chinese young people and they like enjoying the original flavor and feeling of English lyrics. They care little about how to understand English songs semantically and communicatively, let alone the specific cultural background of a song.
As the eye of a song, the title of a song is the most important and impressive part of a song that can catch people’s eyes. A good translation of a song title plays a decisive role in the understanding of a song because in most cases we understand a song just starting from the title of a song.
English songs have some special functions such as informativeness, beauty and resonance. Firstly, the title of a song should be informative enough to contain most information of the song and make people have a quick comprehension of the theme of the song and the thoughts, feelings

and emotions of the song creators through the titile. Secondly, song titles should serve their aesthetic functions, letting people enjoy the beauty of a song. Finally, the ultimate and most important function of song titles is to resonate with the audience and arouse their interest and enthusiasm.
Moreover, the song title is characteristic of brevity, directness and attraction. Generally, it has lenghth limit. It mostly consists of word and phrases. The title of a song is the window of understanding what the song conveys. Thus a good and appropriate translation of a song title is necessary in song translation.
The translation of song titles should take into account their unique functions and characteristics. When translating song titles, translators should ensure that the translated title is short, aesthetic and
attractive. In the following parts, some translation methods on the translation of song titles will be presented and discussed.
3.1.1. Use of Abbreviations
Employing abbreviations is an effective way to limit the length of
the title translation in order to meet the requirement of brevity. For example, The Sound of Silence is translated into “静之声”
rather than “安静的声音”. Hotel California is rendered into “加州
旅店” instead of “加利福尼亚
饭店”. It is well known that “加州” is short for “加利福尼亚州”. In this way, the length of the
title is shortened a lot and read more easily.
3.1.2. Use of Chinese Auxiliary Word “之”
The Chinese auxiliary word “之” is a powerful word in Chinese especially in the translation
of song title. “之” is used in ancient prose while in modern literature it is replaced by “的” . “之”
sounds more elegant, attractive and brief. The following examples illustrate the point: The Animal Song 《动物之歌》
The Prisoner’s Song 《寂静之声》
Blue Night 《蓝色之夜》
Song of Cocoanut Isle 《椰岛之歌》
The use of “之”can easily and successfully render titles into
terse and aesthetic four-character Chinese expressions that sounds great and reads easily.
3.1.3 .Use of Four-character Chinese Phraseologies
It is well-known that four-character phraseologies are commonly used in Chinese, including

in the translation of song titles. Four-character phraseologies have a long history. Chinese people apply the terse and aesthetic linguistic form to writing in order to polish and color their works. As a result, four-character phraseologies are frequently emloyed in the translation of song titles. Not only can four-character phraseologies be easily remembered and understood but also they are more informative than a lengthy sentence. Most importantly, they can deliver the theme of the song and maintain the original flavor of the song title and the attractive and aesthetic idiomatic phrases can arouse the audience’s interest, stimulate their curiosity and resonate with them.
Therefore, four-character phraseologies are popular in the translation of song titles. The following examples will illustrate the use of four-character phraseologies in the translation of song titles. Yesterday Once More 《昨日重现》
My Heart Will Go on 《我心永恒》
Right Here Waiting 《此情可待》
Heaven Help My Heart 《天若有情》
The River of No Return 《大江东去》
My Fair Lady 《窈窕淑女》
Home, Sweet Home 《甜蜜家园》
The above four-character phraseologies are functionally equivalent to the original song title concerning the cultural response of the audience.
To conclude, a good translation of song titles should be aesthetic and impressive. The translation of the song title must contrbute to the understanding of the theme of the song and match with the target language. Thus, the relative cultural background of the target langauge should taken into account and made full use of.
3.2 .Translation of Lyrics
Translation of lyrics is the main part of translation of songs. The quality of translation of songs is largely determined by the quality of transaltion of lyrics. Translation of lyrics include sentences translation, text translation and rhythm translation.
3.2.1. Sentences Translation
Lyrics are the main body of a song, which is also indispensable for a song. The popularity depends largely on the lyrics. Beautiful lyrics will attract more people’s attention and passion and

enjoy wide popularity. It is undeniable that lyrics are crucial and decisive in a song even though some people fail to comprehend them. In the translation of songs, the translation of lyrics is crucial to how good the translated song will be. First of all, have a look at the sentence translation of a song.
On the one hand, sentence translation of songs should focus on accuracy and faithfulness. Take the translation of “Goodbye papa,
please pray for me, I was the black sheep of the family” in Seasons in The Sun as an example. Normally, the black sheep is translated as “害群之马” while in
the above song it is translated as “捣蛋鬼”. The slang “害群之
马” in Chinese refers to a person
who does harm to the community or the society. But in the original song, the meaning of the black sheep is obviously not equivalent to the meaning of the idiom in Chinese. As a result, while translating, we should transform the translation so as to correspond to the Chinese usage of the idiom “the blcak sheep”.
On the other hand, when translating songs, we must be bear in mind that it is often necessary to adjust and modify the sentences and select a best one. Improper translation of the original songs should be avoided. When necessary, we can rearrange the order of the translated words and sentences. For example, when translating these three sentences “I wonder where they are, the days
we had, the songs we sa ng together.”, we should translate the first two sentences together in order to acvoid the misunderstanding of the song. If the addition of emotion is needed, the translator should have a good master and understanding of Chinese culture. Only a good selection of words and sentences can guarantee the readers’ full understanding of the song and move them.
An accurate and attractive translation is far from an excellent one. Since translated sentences belong to a song, they must be able to match with the music. Therefore, while translating songs, translators should obey the basic music rules and keep the same style, rhythm, theme and purpose with the original one.
3.2.2 .Text Translation
Text translation is more challenging, requring the translators to have a good master of language and proficiency in translating skills. Take some of the text from Yesterday Once More for
example.
When I was young I'd listen to the radio
当我年少的时候，我总爱守在收音机旁

Waiting for my favorite songs
等待着我最心爱的歌曲从收音机里轻轻流淌
When they played I'd sing along
每当歌声响起，我都会独自哼唱
It make me smile
这时的我，心神荡漾
Sometimes, for conveying the meaning of the original song, we can make some necessary transformation of the meaning in Chinese. In these lines, “listen to the radio” is translated as “守
在录音机旁”instead of “听录音机” and the sentence “It make me smile” is translated into such a
poetry sentence “这时的我，心神荡漾” rather than the
straightforward translation “使我发笑”.
Someone may question and say this is not accurate and faithful to
the original text, but delivering the exact and true meaning of the song matters more. Thus, sometimes we have to sacrifice the accuracy and value the meaning of the song.
To sum up, there are some rules and norms in the text translation of songs that should be observed. Firstly, the translation should be
faithful to the original text to maintain the equivalent translation. Secondly, some transformations should be made so as to make the translation meaningful and vivid. Finally, translation should focus on the situation and background of a song and the emtions of the creator conveyed in the song. Analyzing the above translation, we know that song translation is quite similar to poem translation in that they share some similarities in the following aspects: both of them are brief and sybolical and both the translations need some transformations between the orginal songs and the translated text. Therefore, while translating English songs, we can refer to some translation skills and techniques
for poem translation. 3.3. Rhythm Translation
The rhythm translation of songs also plays a crucial role in the translation process of songs because the rhythm determines the beauty of a song. Songs have the same beauty as poems. Thus, while translating the song, translators must maitain the original rhythm to ensure the beauty of a song. Take some sentences from Yesterday Once More for example.
And the good times that I had
和曾经美好的时光
makes today seem rather sad

如今的生活是如此令人心伤
So much has changed
多少东西都已改变，无法阻挡
We may easily find out that the original song has a rhyme, all of these three original sentences ending with the same sound [d] in had,
sad and changed. The Chinese version keeps the
same rhyme with the same sound [ang] in “光”, “伤” and “挡” ending every Chinese translated
sentence.
While translating songs with rhyme, translators should at least find an appropriate rhyme to match with the original rhyme to maintain the beauty of the song even though they can not keep the same original rhyme. For those songs devoid of rhyme, we can also translate them through the application of a rhyme to satisfy the beauty of the translation.
4. The Importance of English Song Translation
English song translation not only boosts the diffusion and
popularity of the English songs among the Chinese people and enrichs
their lives but also most importantly, it can contribute to the intercultural communication between China and the western countries.
Firstly, song translation can help us learn about some knowledge of culture of the western countries, including customs, conventions and traditions. For example, Christmas Eve and Wish
You Merry Christmas are songs containing abundant knowledge of culture, which can people have a better and deeper inderstanding of the culture of Christmas in the western countries. For another example, when translating the song of San Francisco, we can learn about the culture background
of the lost times.
Secondly, English song translation can promote the acquisition of
the second language. Singing English songs will help us learn pronunciation, words, English sentence patterns and so on and activate the interest and motivation in learning English. As a result, English song translation is benificial for English learning.
Least but not last, in the era of globalization, intercultural communication is becoming more and more frequent and thriving. As a way of exchange, English songs play a powerful role in intercultural communication especially for the yong peole who are fond of English pop songs. 5. Conclusion

English song translation is a demanding and difficult process which requires linguistic knowledge of English and translation skills as well as a better understanding of cultural background and music
knowledge.Translators are the agent of translation actions. While
translating English songs, they should choose a suitable and flexible strategy to do the job. Bearing in mind the equivalent function and purpose and music rules, translators adopt the best translation method
to render the English songs in conjunction with the analysis of the cultural differences, thus achieving the aim of intercultural communication. The purpose of English song translation is to help people to obtain a better understanding of English songs and English cultures. Although English songs are popular in China and there exist many influential studies which address the techniques and skills for English song translation, some urgent problems still remain in the translation
of English songs. Our country should provide enough support to impulse the development of English song translation in China so as to communicate with the outer world better and more effectively.
This thesis first introduces some relevant translation theories and then elaborates some specific techniques and skills for English song translation, including the translation of song titles, the translation
of song sentences, the translation of song texts and the translation of song rhythm. Finally, the importance of English song translation is emphasized in terms of its role in the popularity of English songs, intercultural communication and English acquisition.
The significance of the thesis lies in that the audience can get a better understanding of English songs and culture as well as the translation of English songs through the study in this thesis. Hopefully, on one hand this study can provide some useful sugegstions for
translators to translate English songs in a proper and effective way. On the other hand, it will make some contributions for the promotion of intercultural communication.
