A

(2009年温州检测A)“Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him,and let him know that you trust him.”Th ese words are from the black American educator,Booker Washington. He was saying that,“If you want people to grow up,you have to stop treating them like children.”

In America, families are close but children are encouraged to be independent,to make their own decisions, even at a very early age. It?s not unusual for a child of seven to be given an allowance(津贴)every week. The child is encouraged to save some of the money but he or she can spend it on whatever they choose, for example, buying clothes, school suppli es or CDs.Some teenagers even have their own credit cards! That?s a big responsibility since even adults are tempted to overspend when they have credit cards.

From an early age,American children are asked for their opinions and they are included in family decision making. At the dinner table, teenagers will be listened to on any topic, from politics to buying a new family car or where the family will go on vacation. In this way, teenagers are getting practice in becoming individuals:they are learning how to stand on their own two feet.

Many Chinese young people are becoming almost as interested as American teens in searching for independence. They want to express those qualities that make them unique human beings. You can see this in the way they dress, the music they listen to and the friends they choose.“Super Girl” Li Yuchun caught the imagination of Chinese teenagers on the “Super Girl” television contest. She was not the traditional “nice, young Chinese girl”.With her short, spiky hair and boy like clothes, she was telling everyone that she was different. She had the courage to be her own person and to stand on her own two feet...and she won!

There is an old saying,“Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him and then choose that way with all hi s strength.”If you do this, step by step, over a period of time, you may find that you have become the person you always wanted to be.

1.The passage is intended to encourage the youth to ___________.

A.save money for useful things

B.become independent

C.express their great ambitions

D.make important decisions

文中第二段中的“In America, families are close but children are encouraged to be independent”和第四段中的“Many Chinese young people are becoming almost as interested as American teens in searching for independence.”

2.A child of seven is given an allowance so that he can _________.

A.be accepted as a popular guy

B.learn to decide how to use money

C.overspend money without care

D.have school supplies of his own

从文中第二段中的“It?s not unusual for a child of seven to be given an

allowance(津贴)every week. The child is encouraged to save some of the money but he or she can spend it on whatever they choose, for example, buying clothes, school supplies or CDs.”

3.The author implies that many Chinese children ___________.

A.are more independent than Americans

B.should become interested in America

C.are happy with their present situation

D.are not satisfied to be nice, quiet ones

从“She was not the traditional…nice, young Chinese girl?.”和“she was telling everyone that she was different.”

4.The main idea of the last paragraph is ___________.

A.that we should do things step by step

B.why we should understand our desires

C.what we should plan for our own life

(2009年高考浙江卷)Four people in the England, back in 1953,stared at Photo 51.It wasn?t much—a picture showing a black X. But three of these people won the Nobel Prize for figuring out what the photo really showed—the shape of DNA.The discovery brought fame and fortune to scientists James Watson,Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins. The fourth, the one who actually made the picture, was left out.

Her name was Rosalind Franklin.“She should have been up there,”says historian Mary Bowden.“If her photos hadn?t been there, the others couldn?t have come up with the structure.”One reason Franklin was missing was that she had died of cancer four years before the Nobel decision. But now scholars doubt that Franklin was not only robbed of her life by disease but robbed of credit by her competitors.

At Cambridge University in the 1950s,Watson and Crick tried to make models by cutting up shapes of DNA?s parts and then putting them together. In the meantime,at King?s College in London,Franklin and Wilkins shone X rays at the molecule(分子).The rays produced patterns reflecting the shape.

But Wilkins and Franklin?s relationship was a lot rockier than the celebrated teamwork of Watson and Crick. Wilkins thought Franklin was hired to be his assistant. But the college actually employed her to take over the DNA project.

What she did was produce X ray pictures that told Watson and Crick that one of their early models was inside out.And she was not shy about saying so.That angered Watson, who attacked her in return,“Mere inspection suggested that she would not easily bend.Clearly she had to go or be put in her place.”

As Franklin?s competitors, Wilkins, Watson and Crick had much to gain by cutting her out of the little group of researchers, says historian Pnina Abir Am.In 1962 at the Nobel Prize awarding ceremony,Wilkins thanked 13 colleagues by name before he mentioned Franklin.Watson wrote his book laughing at her. Crick wrote in 1974 that“Franklin was only two steps away from the solution.”

No,Franklin was the solution.“She contributed more than any other player to solving the structure of DNA. She must be considered a co discoverer,”Abir Am says. This was backed up by Aaron Klug, who worked with Franklin and later won a Nobel Prize himself.Once describe d as the“Dark Lady of DNA”,Franklin is finally coming into the light.

6.Watson was angry with Franklin because she ___________.

A.took the lead in the competition

B.kept her results from him

C.proved some of his findings wrong

D.shared her data with other scientists

What she did was produce X ray pictures that told...inside out.

7.Why is Franklin described as“Dark Lady of DNA”?

A.She developed pictures in dark labs.

B.She discovered the black X—the shape of DNA.

C.Her name was forgotten after her death.

D.Her contribution was unknown to the public.

Franklin is finally coming into the light.

8.What is the writer?s attitude toward Wilkins,Watson and Crick?

A.Disapproving. B.Respectful.

C.Admiring. D.Doubtful.

解析:选A。 No,Franklin was the solution. Franklin

In addition to self awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality—independent will— that really makes effective self management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities.

The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic(给人深刻印象的) evidence to the value, the power of the independent will.

But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self management, we realize it?s usually not the

自立自强的) effort that brings dramatic, the visible(可见的), the once in a lifetime, up by the bootstraps(

lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.

The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It?s our ability to make and keep promises to ours elves, to “walk our talk”.

Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day by day, moment by moment. Management is discipline (training to be self controlled), carrying it out.

Discipline obtains from belief—belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的) purpose, to a long term or short term goal that must be carried out.

In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.

Weighing too much can damage your health, and obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world.

Sleep might be one answer to the problem. A new study has found that elementary school students who slept too little were more likely to gain pounds. In the United States today, some 9 million children over the age of 6 are obese(too fat).

Past studies have shown a link between sleeping less and weighing more, but scientists have had a tough time determining“Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” says Julie C. Lumeng of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In other words,it hasn?t been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping, or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. Both scenarios(情况)seemed equally possible.

To get a better idea of which causes which, Lumeng and his colleagues interviewed the parents of 785 third graders from around the United States. The parents answered questions about how well their kids slept that year. Three years later, the parents answered the same questions. By sixth grade,18 percent of kids involved in the study were obese. The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students? race or ge nder. It also didn?t matter how strict their parents were. Obesity struck all of these groups equally.

Instead, sleep seemed to be the key factor. Over the 3 years of the study, the children averaged a healthy 9.

5 hours of sleep a night. Some kids, however, slept a lot more—or less—than others. For the sixth graders, every hour of sleep above the 9. 5 hour avera ge was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being obese. Sleep appeared doubly important for the third graders. Every extra hour of sleep they got was linked to a 40 percent drop in obesity by third grade.

“I expected we?d find that this(sleep link with obesity) was just a_bunch_of_bunk,”says Lumeng,a pediatrician. But their findings were convincing. No matter how her team looked at the link,“we couldn?t make it go away. ”

1. According to the research,________.

A. 9 million people in America have a weight problem

B. not enough sleep contributes to a gain in weight

C. sixth graders need more sleep than third graders

D. lack of sleep has become the most deadly killer

2. The statement “Which came fi rst,the chicken or the egg?” suggests that ________.

A. scientists are sure about the causes of children?s obesity

B. it?s easy to decide the cause and effect of this problem

C. scientists are still confused about the cause and effect of the problem

D. yo u?ll develop obesity if you eat chicken and eggs

3. Recent studies show that a child?s weight is influenced by the ________.

A. amount of sleep

B. parents? attitude to him

C. race or gender

D. performance in school

解析:选A。

4. The underlined part in the last paragraph most probably means something ________.

A. acceptable

B. understandable

C. reliable

D. unreasonable

(2010年黄冈中学期中测试)Doomed beauties such as Cleopata and Manilyn Monroe were far from alone in their misery. Very attractive people tend to form partnerships that are less stable and satisfying than those enjoyed by plain_Janes .

According to the research by Dr John Blaine of the University of Southern California, relationships between people whose professions largely depend on their appearance, such as models or actors, tend to end much faster than those between lawyers, doctors and students.

Blaine said the beautiful felt different from children. They are treated as special, which may create both arrogance (傲慢)and insecurity. All too often, beauty can be used as an alternative to education. Often they are pushed out of their class or town, told to go off and make their fortune in Hollywood or London and, when the majority fail, they have few talents to make a living.

Blaine added that beautiful people score poorly on the “big five”—the key factors American experts consider when helping distressed couples. These are neuroticism(神经过敏),including anger and anxiety; extroversion(性格外向);openness to new experiences; agreeableness; conscientiousness, and sticking by agreements they have made. Attractive people often see no reason to try to change until their looks start to fade.

Krista Sutherlanf, of the University of California Los Angeles, said partnerships that appeared to be perfect from the outside, such as the former “dream teams” of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise or Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, where backgrounds and aspirations(抱负) are often shared ,did not necessarily lead to happiness.

5. What can we infer from the first sentence of the passage?

A. Beautiful women always felt lonely.

B. Beautiful women were always alone.

C. Many beautiful women didn?t end up with a happy lif e.

D. Beautiful women always lived a happy life.

6. The underlined phrase “plain Janes” in the passage refers to“ ________”.

A. ordinary looking w omen

B. women called Jane

C. common people

D. attractive women

解析:选A。

7. We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley were a couple

B. Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were very satisfied with their life

A very worried gentleman approached me. He asked how he could get home to Cheyenne, Wyoming. He had just arrived from Philadelphia and missed his connecting flight. I pointed him to the ground transportation area. There he could rent a car. And then I called my wife to let her know I would be home shortly.

About fifteen minutes later, the gentleman returned and informed me that all the buses were full and there were no cars available. I told him he had to stay for a night. Hearing that, he burst into tears.

Simply sitting and watching birds is a popular hobby around the world. It?s fun and relaxing at the same time.

Many people quite enjoy just watching the birds in their garden, yard, trees and bushes from their front window. And it?s even better to actually go out into the wild and watch the birds in their own natural habitats.

Natural habitat of course usually means going into the woods, or to remote areas. So before going on a bird watching outing, be sur e you?ve prepared a little. First and foremost, be sure you?re wearing the appropriate clothes for both the location you?ll be visiting, and the climate that area is currently experiencing.

If you live in a warm desert area, for instance, and you plan to go up a mountain for a day of bird watching, you?ll want to first find out if there?s any snow on the mountain,or whether it?s cold during the daylight hours.

You?ll of course also want to be sure you have some food or snacks, and plenty of water.

Besides, binoculars are almost a requirement for bird watching too. They allow you to get a close up view of any birds, nests, and chicks. Many bird lovers also enjoy having a pen or pencil, and a notebook on hand so they can take notes about the birds they?ve seen,or sketch them as they?re watching.

And of course if you like pictures, you?ll want to bring along a camera.

Last but not least, it would be helpful to have some sort of bird identification reference available. Whether you can take it with you into the woods,or you have it hanging at home,it is always quite useful in the long term.

Last weekend,Emma Zeiger,10, rode her bike ten miles in the pouring rain at the first annual Newton Needham Pan Massachusetts Challenge(PMC)Kids Ride. Nothing, not even bad weather, could stop her from making a difference.

This June, Emma and thousands of other kids across the Northeast participated in nearly 30 PMC Kids Rides. PMC Kids Rides raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. Created ten years ago by Ryan Wilkinson,17, and his sister Hattie, 15, the rides are a more kid friendly version of the annual Pan Massachusetts Challenge.

The Wilkinson family first got the idea to create a PMC Kids Ride in 1998 when Ryan, then 7, wanted to ride in the Pan Massachusetts Challenge.

Ryan and Hattie?s gr andmother had been diagnosed with a brain tumor(肿瘤). “We were experiencing cancer for the first time,”Ryan said, “So that was on my mind when I said I wanted to ride. ”Unfortunately, PMC participants have to be at least 15 years old to ride. Ryan was only seven. So, the Wilkinson family decided to start a children?s version of the PMC.

In just a couple of weeks, the Wilkinsons organized the Wildwood Challenge, the very first Pan Massachusetts Challenge Kids Ride. Thirteen kids rode around a neighborhood block 25 times. They raised $1,600 for cancer research. On June 21, Ryan and Hattie will celebrate the eleventh annual Wildwood PMC Kids Ride.

Since 1998, PMC Kids Rides have grown significantly. Every year, more and more kids participate. To raise money, kids do extra chores, babysit, host car washes, and send out letters asking for donations. “Every penny counts,”Hattie Wilkinson explains. “All of the money goes to a good cause. It?s really great to be able to ride for people with cancer and to repr esent them and raise money for them. ”Since 1998, the Pan Massachusetts Kids Rides have raised more than $1 million for cancer research and treatment.

You?re going to the United States to live? How wonderful ! You?re really lucky!”

Does this sound familiar? Perhaps your family and friends said similar things to you when you left home. But does it seem true all the time? Is your life in this new country always wonderful and exciting? A great many facts show th at it?s not easy for newcomers to adjust to life in a new culture. They have to experience culture shock.

What causes culture shock? Maybe the weather is unpleasant. Perhaps the customs are different. Perhaps the public service systems such as the telephone, post office, or transportation are difficult to figure out and you make mistakes. The simplest things seem difficult. The language may be difficult. The food may seem strange to you. If you don?t look similar to the natives, you may feel strange. You may feel as if everyone is watching you. In fact, you_are_always_watching_yourself.

Everyone experiences culture shock in some form or another. But culture shock comes as a surprise to most people. A lot of the time, the people with the worst culture shock are the people who never had any difficulties in their own countries. They were active and successful in their community (社区). They had hobbies or pastimes which they enjoyed. When they come to a new country, they do not have the same positions or hobbies as they already had in their countries. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new self image.

Culture shock produces a feeling of disorientation (晕头转向), which may be homesickness, imagined illness, or even paranoia (妄想症). When people feel the disorientation of culture shock, they sometimes feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the unfamiliar environment. They want to create an escape within their room to give themselves a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to familiarize the person more with the culture. Familiarity and experience are the long term ways to settle the problem of culture shock.

A. you are always feeling homesick

(2010届英语周报第2期)Martin Frobisher, born in Yorkshire, went to London as a boy to be educated by a relative. He showed no talent for book learning,so his relative sent him to sea. Before reaching manhood, Frobisher had been on two voyages to the Guinea Coast. On the second he was captured and handed over to the Portuguese garrisoning(驻守) Sao Jorge da Mina(now Elmina, Ghana),who allowed him to return to England.

By the 1570s,England had largely abandoned hope of finding a Northeast Passage to Asia, and thoughts turned to the Northwest. Frobisher worked together with Michael Lok, a man of some wealth and learning. Frobisher?s first voyage, in 1576,took him to Frobisher Bay in Baffin Island.

English investors(投资者),including Queen Elizabeth, poured money into Lok?s Company of Cathay. Frobisher sailed again in 1577, this time to ship home what he mistakenly thought was gold bearing minerals.Lok still felt hopeful and sent Frobisher back in 1578. This time the mariner discovered the Hudson

Strait. He followed the strait for nearly 200 miles, believing it to be a more promising Northwest Passage than Frobisher Bay. He brought home more dirt and rocks, but English confidence had gone;Lok went to a debtors? prison and Frobisher sought other employment.

Frobisher accompanied Sir Francis Drake to the West Indies in 1585-1586.When Philip Ⅱ?s Spanish Armada(无敌舰队)entered the English Channel in 1588, Frobisher?s part in the fighting was successful and he received knighthood(爵士爵位).He died of a wound received near Brest, where he had been sent to relieve the siege(解除包围).He lived just long enough to be taken back to Plymouth.

What would you think if I told you I could eat 40 percent more food than other people—eating boxes of ice cream, bowls of noodles and plates of meat—all while losing weight?

You might hate me, thinking I have one of those annoyingly good metabolisms(新陈代谢)that just burn up fat the instant it enters my body. You might wonder if I have an intestinal(肠的)worm, or perhaps an eating disorder. Or maybe you?d just shrug your shoulders and figure I have a rich fantasy life.

You?d be wrong.

For my body to finish such a surprising task, I would have to be a mouse. Not just any mouse, but one lucky enough to be involved in a new study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

After identifying an enzyme(酶)that allows fat to be stored in the body, scientists fed mice without those enzymes, and found those mice were able to consume far more food than other mice—and still weigh 10 to 15 percent less.

Best of all, the mice that had no enzymes were in very good health, producing baby mice with no problem and generally acting like any other mouse. That?s great news for obesity researchers, who think that scientists may figure out a way to prevent the fat metabolizing(脂肪代谢)enzyme in humans and control weight gain. And such a pill would be very exciting for many struggling to get rid of dangerous extra pounds.

But don?t start planning any big dinner just yet: At this point, of course, any pill for humans is but a twinkle(闪烁) in the eye of every medicine company?s CEO. More tests are to be made, and eventually humans will be introduced in the test.

The competition began there in the 1990s and was inspired loosely by the legend of a 19th-century outlaw who tested the mettle (毅力) of his gang of robbers by having them run an obstacle course with a woman on their backs. The sport has since gained enthusiasts around the world. The event on Saturday in Maine was one of several officially qualifying competitions for international championships in Finland, with the others held in Australia, Sweden and Estonia. Nearly every team employed the “Estonian carry”, in which the woman hangs the head down with her legs hooked around the man’s neck and her arms around his waist, which frees his hands. Despite the competition’s name, the couple does not need to be married. The winners on Saturday were Jesse Wall, a gym owner, and his friend Christina Arsenault. Under the rules of the game, they won Arsenault’s weight in beer and five times the n umerical value of her weight in cash. Asked what he planned to do with the 10 cases of beer, Wall looked around and said, “Share them with everyone here. ” 21.What does the writer want to tell us? A. To test people’s courage and patience. D. To make people join in outdoor activities. 23.Which of the following countries is the officially qualifying competition not held in? A. Finland. B. Australia. C. Sweden. D. Spain. B Cold, snowy weather has arrived in many places. That means young people are enjoying building snowmen, going snowboarding and having snowball fights. But in one small American city, children can’t play with snow to the fullest. The town of Severance, north of Denver, gets about 100 centimeters of snowfall a year. For almost 100 years, city rules have said it is forbidden to throw or shoot stones or missiles at people, animals, buildings, trees or vehicles. Snowballs were considered to be part of the town’s definition (定义) of “missiles”.

Travellers to developing countries should start with long-term basic health protection. This means vaccinations(疫苗接种) against polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. Other vaccinations will depend on where you are going, local conditions and your possible environment. Visitors to Yellow Fever areas such as West Africa should certainly be vaccinated against it. Check links for the latest news and don't forget your travel insurance. It's really worth the money. Water: In developing countries avoid drinking or even brushing your teeth with tap water. Drink bottled water and check that the cap is well sealed(封闭) when you buy it. Turning it upside down and watching for drops is one method of checking. If you can't buy it, purify it by boiling. Do not take ice in your drinks, unless it is frozen mineral water. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are fine from the bacteria point of view, though not so fine from a thirst point of view. Don't share water bottles with other travellers unless you want to share their bacteria too. Water filters (过滤器) are OK in theory but can break easily and usually don't filter some serious bacteria, such as hepatitis A and E. Force yourself to drink clean water, lots of it, if you want to avoid headaches and tiredness from a thirst. Water requirements at home are 6 glasses per day, so increase that figure by at least 3 times in tropical environment. Food: Avoid ice cream from unhealthy sources, raw fish, salad and uncooked food — unless you can peel it yourself. Most cases of diseases come from unclean food, not unclean water. Eat where it's busy. This means that the food is good or cheap or safe to eat! 1.When you plan to travel to developing countries you should first ________. A.choose countries where you will feel it convenient to travel B.make a good preparation to avoid being harmed or injured C.consider taking as much healthy food and clean water as possible D.check links for the latest news and buy your travel insurance
