Choose the best answer to complete the passage.

Have you ever wondered how a kite stays in the air? Wind is very important but so are two scientific words: gravity(重力) and lift(举力).

When something is in the air, gravity is what pulls something back to the ground. 16 you throw a ball in the air, it comes back down because of gravity. When leaves 17 trees onto the ground, that’s gravity. When you put a kite in the air, gravity wants to bring it 18 . Then what keeps it up? Wind! Wind creates lift.

Lift is what happens when wind pushes against something and carries it up. When a plastic bag gets caught in the wind, lift is what causes it to rise into the air. When you put a silk scarf 19 a fan, lift causes 20 to wave(摆动). An object’s lift depends on the size of its surface or its area. A piece of 21__will float(漂浮)in the wind, but it won’t float if you make that paper into a ball. That’s because you’ve made the surface smaller.

To find out if there is enough wind to fly a kite, go outside and look up. If you 22 leaves dancing on trees or flags waving sideways, it’s 23 good kite-flying weather. When the wind is strong enough to move a flag, it’s moving 24 7 to 18 miles an hour. That’s just 25 to lift a common kite.

Planet 3549 is a newly-discovered planet. With the development of technology, it will take only 15 days to travel there. Daming’s father is an excellent astronaut(宇航员), so he was chosen to land on this planet.

Before his journey, scientists had collected a lot of information about the planet. Then came the time for Daming’s father to leave. He said goodbye to his family members and friends, and then started his journey, during which time he had a good rest in the spaceship. After landing on Planet 3579 safely, the real work began for Daming’s father. He connected with the headquarter (指挥中心) on the earth and sent back some photofraphs of this planet. After that, he sent one of the robots away to get more data (数据) about Planet 3549. Meanwhile, some machines controlled by computers in the spaceship were working to produce oxygen (氧) and clean water, other machines were dealing with waste.

Everything worked very well for the first week. Unluckily, something suddenly went wrong with a small part of a machine, and it couldn’t turn dirty water into drinking water. It was terrible. Amy takes care of many animals in the park, but she also does important research. As she observes the animals that she looks after, she learns more about their needs and behavior (行为). This information helps the animals in the park, but it can also be used to protect other members of the species(物种) in the wild.

It’s hard work to look after these animals. Their needs often change according to different hours of the day. So Amy must depend on her science knowledge and good number sense to help her make the right decisions all day long.

Even though dolphins (海豚) spend much of their time underwater, they are mammals (哺乳动物). This means that they must come to the surface to take in air. Dolphins give birth to their young. They’re not hatched from eggs. Just like all other mammals, mother dolphins must nurse, or feed milk to their babies.

Amy and her team know this first-hand. One of their dolphins recently gave birth. A baby dolphin is not small, either. It was almost 1 meter long the day it was born. A big dolphin usually eats about 4% of its body weitht in food every day. Amy knows that a mother dolphin that is nursing needs twice the food.
