Fermi Problem

On a Monday morning in July, the world ’ s first atom b o m b exploded in the New Mexico desert. Forty seconds later, the shook waves reached the base camp where the Italian-American physicist Enrico Fezmi and his

team stood. After a mental calculation, Fermi announced to his team that the b o m b ’s energy had equated 10,000tons of T N T . The bomb team was impressed, but not surprised. Fermi’s genius was known throughout the scientific world. In 1938 he had won a Nobel Prize. Four years later he produced the first nuclear chain reaction, leading us into the nuclear age. Since Fermi’s death in 1954, no physicist has been at once a master experimentalist and a leading theoretician.

Like all virtuosos ( 大师),Fermi had a distinctive style. H e preferred the most direct route to an answer. He was very good at dividing difficult problems into small, manageable bits—talent we all can use in our daily lives.

To develop this talent in his students, Fermi would suggest a type of question n o w k n o w n as a Fermi problem. Upon first hearing one of these, you haven’t the remotest notion of the answer, and you feel certain that too little information had been given to solve it. Yet w h e n the problem is broken into sub-problems, each answerable without the help of experts or books, you can c o m e close to the exact solution.

Suppose you want to determine Earth’s circumference without looking it up. Everyone kn o w s that New Yo r k andLos Angeles are about 3,000 miles apart and that the time difference between them is three hours. Three hours is one-eighth of a day, and a day is the time it takes the planet to complete one rotation, so its circumference must be eight times 3000 or 24000 miles. This answer differs from the true value, 24,902.45miles, by less than four percent.

Ultimately the value of dealing with everyday problems the w a y Fermi did lies in the rewards of making independent discoveries and inventions. It doesn’t matter whether the disc overy is as important as determining the power of an atom or as small as measuring the distance between N e w Y o r k andLos Angeles. Looking up the answer, or letting someone else find it deprives you of the pleasure and pride that accompany creativity, and deprives you of an experience that builds up self-confidence. Thus, approaching personal dilemmas as Fermi problems can beco me a habit that enriches your life.

H e started putting cars together in 1891, although it was by no means the first popular automobile, the Model T showed the world just h o w creative Ford was at combining technology and market.

2 The company’s assembly line alone threw America’s Industrial Revolution into overdrive ( 高速运转).Instead of having workers put together the entire car, Ford’s friends, who were great toolmakers from Scotland,organized teams that added parts to each Model T as it m o v e d d o w n a line. B y the time Ford’s Highland Park plant w a s h u m m i n g ( 嘴嗡作响)along in 1914, the world’s first automatic conveyor belt could turn out a car every 9

In those years it w a s unthinkable that a m a n could be paid that m u c h for doing something that didn’t involve an awful lot of training or education. The Wall Street Journal called the plan “an economic crime” and critics everywhere laughed at Ford.

4 But as the wage increased later to daily $10,it proved a critical component of Ford’s dream to m a k e theautomobile accessible to all. The critics were too stupid to understand that because Ford had lowered his costs per car, the high er wages didn ’t matter, except for making it possible

Pronouncing a Language

Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his ow n language; but few people are even fairly proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. N o w there are m a n y reasons for this, s o me obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the basic reason why people in general donot speak foreign languages very m u c h better than they do native language is that they fail to understand the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce. Far too m a n y people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill—one that needs carefiil training of a special kind, and one that cannot be gained by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while realizing the importance of a good accent, often neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to m a k e is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote s ome of the lesson time to this, and get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions w h e n other aspects of English, such as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the m o m e n t totake second place.

Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique.

It is also possible to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any c o mments he m a y m a k e on his students, pronunciation are unlikely to be of m u c h use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation m a y well be time wasted.

Working Successfully within Cultural Boundaries

Soon after starting our job in China, w e realized that the greatest challenge w e faced would not be our day-to-day responsibilities but a completely foreign work environment and culture.

We were used to the very direct, sometimes confrontational, but more equal style of management in the United States. Here, we were faced with the never-direct, never-confrontational style of management common in

Asia.

W e often hear similar stories. O n e w o m a n shared her experience of returning to China after more than 15years in the US. Although she spent most of her childhood in China, she felt that her colleagues’ thinking proce sses were completely foreign to her. She needed to adapt herself to the culture of her c o m p a n y only then would she be successful at her job. In the end, she w a s n ’t able to successfully re-adapt herself to the culture. W h a t she didn’t realize was that, rather than disagreeing with her ideas, they disagreed with her method of implementing them. For example, instead of recognizing her c o m p a n y ’s strict chain-of-command, she had in one case taken her plan straight to the co m p a n y chairman. This action consequently caused her superiors to lose face. She had unwittingly broken a cardinal rule of Chinese culture.

O n e m a n w h o spent m a n y years overseas before returning to China to head up the local operations of a multinational company, had a similar experience. In his first management team meeting, he presented his plans for a n e w direction in China operations. His request w a s met with an uncomfortable silence, with none of the managers daring to speak up. They had not been prepared for his open style of management. Soon he quickly determined that his first on-the-job challenge would be to build up managers’ confidence in him, and that he had to do this individually, not in a group. Within a year, their management team meetings were transformed into the interactive, brainstorming sessions that he intended them to be.

Therefore, it w a s n ’t until after w e had learned to appreciate the culture of our workplace and earned the confidence and trust of our inferiors that w e were able to m o v e forward and successfully do our job. We must first understand and accept a culture for what it is; only then will w e be able to successfully w o r k within it.

36. W h a t are the differences in style of management in the U S A and China according to the author?

A. In the U S A , it is indirect style of management. In China, it is direct.

B. In the U S A , it is direct style of management. In China, it is never-direct.

C. In the U S A , it is always confrontational. In China, it is sometimes confrontational.

D. In the U S A , it is equal. In China it is unequal.

37. W h e r e did the w o m a n think she differed from her Chinese colleagues?

A. In the thinking process.

B. In treating the same thing.

C. In implementing.

D. In understanding the rule.

38. What is the cardinal rule of Chinese culture mentioned in this passage?

A. The obedience to the superior.

B. The strict chain-of-command.

A.Learn to appreciate the culture of his / her workplace.

B. Earn the confidence and trust of his / her superiors.

C. Get along well with the colleagues.

D. W o r k harder than others.

A Carrot a Day Keeps Cancer Away

Among all the malignancies, lung cancer is the biggest killer: more than 100,000 Americans a year die of the disease. Giving up smoking is one of obvious w a y to reduce the risk, but another answer m a y lie in the kitchen. According to a n e w report, even heavy smokers m a y be protected from developing lung cancer by a simple dietary measure: a daily portion of carrots, spinach or any other vegetable or fruit containing a form of vitamin A called carotene.

The finding, published in the British medical journal T heL ancet, is part of a long-range investigation of diet and disease. Since 1957 a team of American researchers has monitored the dietary habits and medical histories of 2,000 middle-aged m e n employed by the Western Electric Co. in Chicago. Led by Dr. Richard Shelelle of Chicago’s Rush-Presbyterian, St. Lu k e ’s Medical Center, the researchers recently began to sort out the links b etween the subjects’dietary patterns and cancer. Other studies of animals and h u m a n s have suggested that vitamin A offers s o m e protection against lung cancer. The correlation seemed logical, since vitamin A is essential for the growth of the epithelial (上皮的)tissue that lines the airways of the lungs.

Vegetables: But the earlier research did not distinguish between two different forms of the vitamin.

“Preformed”vita min A, known as retinol, is found mainly in liver and dairy products like milk, cheese, butter and eggs. But vitamin A is also made in the body from carotene, which is abundant in a variety of vegetables and fruits, including carrots, spinach, squash, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and apples.

In the Western Electric study, Shekelle and his colleagues found little correlation between the incidence of lung cancer and the consumption of foods containing preformed vitamin A, but w h e n they examined the data on carotene intake, they discovered a significant relationship. A m o n g the 488 m e n w h o had the lowest level of carotene consumption, there were fourteen cases of lung cancer; in a group of the same size that ate the most carotene, only two cases developed. The apparent protective effect of carotene held up even for longtime smokers but to a lesser degree.

Further studies will be necessary before the link between lung cancer and carotene can be firmly established. In the meantime, researchers warn against taking large numbers of vitamin A pills, because the tablets contain a form of the chemical that can be extremely toxic in high doses. Instead, they advise a well-balance diet that includes foods rich in carotene. For a smoker, a half-cup of carrots every day might possibly m a k e the difference between life and death.

41.W h a t does “malignancy” in the text refer to?

A. Cancer.

B. Sickness.

C. Vitamins.

D. Disease.

42. W h y did Dr. Shelelle think the correlation between vitamin A and lung cancer protection w a s logical?

A. Vitamin A causes lung cancer.

B. Vitamin A cures lung cancer.

C. Vitamin A is necessary for the growth of the tissue lining the lungs.

D. Vitamin A is a molecule that prevents smoke from being inhaled.

43. A m o n g the groups studied, w h o had the most cases of lung cancer?

A. Those with the lowest level of carotene intake.

Robotic Highway Cones

A University of Nebraska professor has developed robotic cones and barrels. 46 They can even be programmed to m o v e on their o w n at any particular part of the day, said Shane Farritor, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Nebraska.

For example, if workers arrived at 6 am, the cones could m o v e from the side of the highway to block off the lane at that time.

47 “ It just seems like a very good application for robots,” Farritor said. “The robotic cones would also help remove people from hazardous jobs on the highway putting barrels and cones into place,”Farritor said in a report on his creation.

48 The fund allowed Farritor to work on the project with graduate students at Nebraska and his assistant Steve Goddard.

The robots are placed at the bottom of the cones and barrels and are small enough not to greatly change the appearance of the construction aides. “It would look exactly the same,’’Farritor said. “Normally there ’s a kind of rubbery, black base to them. 49 Farritor has talked with officials from the Nebraska Department of Roads about how the robots would be most useful to what they might need.

The robots could come in handy following a slow-moving maintenance operation, like painting a stripe on a road or moving asphalt, where n o w the barrels have to be picked up and m o v e d as the operation proceeds. “That way you d o n ’t have to block off a 10-mile strip for the operation.” Farritor said.

While prototypes have been made, they are not in use anywhere. Farritor said he has applied for a patent and is considering what to do next. 50 He is also thinking about marketing the robots to roads departments and others across the country which m a y benefit from them.

F 句中的“These robotic cones and barrels”正好说明F 句是第1 句的后续句,these这个代词把第1、2 句连接起来。

第1 句的at 6 a m 与A 句的at the end of the d a y相对应;第 2 段第1 句的m o v e from the side of the highway 与 A 句的return to the original place 相连,所以A 句是第1 句的后续句。

50. B 本段的第4 句“H e is also thinking about…”中的also是一个重要的线索,说明前面一定出现过“he is thinking”。

51. B w h e n jazz was b o m 是定语从句,修饰at the turn of the last century , 所以这里需要填入的是一个引导定语从句的关联副词,只有w h e n 具有这一功能。

56. C 从跟后面这几个词(m o o d s,interests, e m o t i o n s )的搭配考虑,只能选expressing 。
