I joined the Youth V olunteer Association (YV A) of my university when I was a junior. I have benefited a lot from that experience.
There are many student organizations in my university. At the beginning of every new semester, there is a big day for all those clubs and associations to recruit. I joined the YV A because I wanted to help others. To my understanding, just like what I said at the recruitment interview, being a volunteer means to take out my personal time to do something for others.
My first volunteering experience was to give English lessons to residents
from a neighourhood. Due to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, more people are willing to learn some basic English. I major in English, so I think maybe I could help these people with my expertise. We did it every weekend and kept doing it for almost three months. I not only gave lessons to people, more importantly, I communicated with them. Many of them are older than me. They come from all walks of life. They brought to class different life stories. I exchanged my school experiences with their social experiences. Sharing with them has added to my insight into the world I am living in, which was a good thing for someone like me who did not have much access to the real world outside school campus. My association offers the young good chance to be helpful, to get to know more people, to lea rn something that’s not written on the text book. Part 3
Working in an Organization
What would you prefer to work in, a big organization or a small one?
If I were a graduate freshly out of school, I would prefer to work in a big organization. Big organizations have advantages that small organizations don’t. As a new graduate, I cherish very much the future development opportunity that big organizations could offer. If I worked for many years, I would prefer to work in small organizations. They are less strict with the employees. They give me more space to turn my ideas into reality.
What are the benefits of working in a small organization?
It’s more flexible in terms of rules and limitations. People can create their own organization culture. With fewer people working for it, every one is important, every one’s voice can be heard. Besides, it’s easier for a small group of people to reach on an agreement on some issues. It cuts down the time organizations spend on decision making, which is a very good thing in today’s time-racing world.
What are the benefits of working for a big organization?
Working for a big organization makes me feel proud. I feel safer-I mean they cannot fire me any time they want to without giving a sound reason, unless I do something terri bly wrong and cause great loss. It’s true that big organizations have countless rules and regulations. They seem quite a burden some time. But if I work hard and successfully finish every piece of task given by my boss, I will be approved and get what I deserve. Rules and regulations not only punish people, but also push us to work harder.

What kind of work do people do in your hometown?
People do all kinds of work in my hometown. Teachers, businessmen, company employees, factory workers, doctor...the list is endless, as the economy develops all the time and every day there is new job opportunity. Economy development has cultivated many new jobs, such as hourly-paid workers, baby sitters for babies and for the old, private finance adviser
etc.
What service industries are there in your hometown?
Our city is a famous tourist destination. We benefit a lot from tourism. With the development of tourism, hotel and restaurant business grows rapidly. Entertainment has also become an industry in recent few years. Traditional art forms have been replaced by modern art shows. Public transportation is another major service industry. The local government encourages its citizens to take public transport rather than driving private cars to work and school.
What is the government doing to protect the environment (from industrial pollution produced by these factories)?
The local government works a lot on developing public transportation. They produce more comfortable buses. They cut down bus ticket price in order to attract more commuters. This policy has greatly decreased the number of private cars running on the road. Therefore, air pollution is kept under control. At the same time, the government has made and carried out new policies to stop people spitting on the street or smoking in public places. I am totally for these policies.

A telephone booth is a small structure furnished with a payphone and designed for a telephone user's convenience. The user of the booth pays for the call by depositing coins into a slot on the telephone or by using a telephone card.

More than a century has passed and now the telephone booth is seen almost everywhere. It has even become the art in some condition. However, with the rapid growth of the Internet the use of mobile telephone, the traditional telephone booth will probably fade out. Maybe we will only see the old ones in the museum show in the near future.
Part 3 Electrical Appliances
1. What kinds of electrical appliances are most used in the home besides the telephone and computer?
I would have to say washing machine, vacuum cleaner, rice cooker, coffee maker, electric kettle, air conditioner, etc. Those would be the ones
I couldn't live without or I mean wouldn't want to do without.
2. What are some advantages and disadvantages of using electrical equipment?
Firstly, it saves our time but, one the other hand, people will become
totally dependent on equipment and not to do things they could do themselves. Lastly, people could get electrocuted if using them carelessly, which happens every year.
3. Do you think we can now live without electrical appliances?
Well, it’s hard to say. Electricity has truly become the lifeblood of our society. Right now we can’t live without electrical devices because we rely on them to make our life easier. Many of us have become addicted to what can be done with indoor plumbing, the Internet and cell phones. Actually, It is difficult but not impossible.
Modern Technology & Human Progress
1. What changes have taken place in society as a result of the use of modern technology such as the television and the computer?
No doubt to say that modern technology has made our life easier and convenient. Invention of the tools like stapler, Hoover and ATM is the milestone of technology as well as human being's progress. Take the Internet for instance; people can communicate with friends all over the world now. Only by clicking, you will gain what you expect.
2. Do you think people rely too much on machines and modern technology nowadays?
Yes most people do. Most people like looking for the easy way to get certain things done like: cooking with microwave, weeding with lawn mower and so on. I think maybe we rely on conveniences too much that
we should actually get away from it all and back to nature.
3. How do you think modern technology will change the way people work in the future?
It has already changed the way people work in every field and it will continue. For instance, my mom studied to be a graphic designer when she was in college. She did everything by hand 20 years ago. Now, her field grew with the use of Internet and new technology as she’s drawing by computer, bidding work online, and submitting work online. In the future, more work can be done automatically, and all we need to do is just to press the button or to check the jobs if they are ready for collection.

As a child, we don't always realize that parents tell us what to do out of love. I discovered that she was right after awhile. To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a sober realist -- aware of both one's strength and shortage. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much. I think feeling small is the first step to knowing yourself. Being silent is the second. I think we are afraid of silence because we don't want to be small. If we are too silent, we might slow down enough to recognize that something much deeper, much larger, and much more ancient than us is slowly trying to tell us something. And that's scary. But I think it's worth a try. Maybe it will tell us who we are.
