A First Look at the USA

1. Florida

Welcome to Florida, the “Sunshine State”. If you like warm weather, Florida is the best place for a vacation. Millions of visitors come to Florida each year. They like its sandy beaches, theme parks, and natural beauty.

Miami is a big tourist city. People love its beautiful beaches. There are many coconut palm trees along the streets and beaches in Miami. They are very pretty. But they are also dangerous! People have jobs as coconut watchers. They make sure that coconuts do not fall on the tourists’heads!

Florida is famous for its theme parks. The world’s largest theme park is Walt Disney Worlds, near Orlando. A train takes people around Disney Worlds. One part, called EPCOT Center, is all about the future. You can see life, food and transportation in the future.

2. Washington

Why is Washington different from every other state in the United States? It is the only state named after the first President of the United States, George Washington. It is a beautiful state. It is called the “Evergreen State”. Washington is very green because it rains a lot there.

The rain helps many things grow. There are trees and forests everywhere. People cut down the trees for wood. But they plant a new tree for each tree that they cut down. So Washington has beautiful forests. There are also many fruit trees. Washington is number one in the United States for apples and pears.

Washington has many mountains and rivers. There are 40 kinds of fish in the rivers. But Washington is most famous for its salmon. Washington also has a lot of volcanoes. In 1980 the volcano at Mount St. Helens erupted. The smoke from the mountain turned the day into night. Trees and plants died. Sixty people near Mount St. Helens died. But today new life is back on the mountain. Scientists are very surprised that animals and plants are back too soon.

3. Minnesota

Minnesota has many lakes. People call Minnesota the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. In fact, there are more than 15,000 lakes. It also has rivers. The great Mississippi River begins at Lake Itasca. It is very small where it starts. The river then flows 2,340 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.

The name of Minnesota is a Native American word. Can you guess what it means? If you think that Minnesota means “water”, you are right. It means “sky-colored water”. It is a good name for this state.

St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota. Here, at the winter carnival, people make ice sculpture.

4. McDonald’s

Do you have a dream? What do you want to do? Maurice (“Mac”) and Richard McDonald have a dream. They want to be movie stars. They go to California from the East Coast. But they cannot find jobs in the movies. They are very poor. They are very disappointed. They must do something to make money. They decide to open a restaurant in San Bernardino. They want to try something new —a fast-food restaurant. They borrow money and open a restaurant. They call the restaurant

SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 2) 3

McDonald’s. Hamburgers, milk shakes, and French fries are on the menu. That’s all. A restaurant with three things on the menu? No one thinks it will work. But people love it. The food is simple, fast, and good. Soon people wait in line outside the restaurant.

A salesman named Ray Kroc from Chicago cannot understand why the restaurant needs so many milk-shake machines. So he goes to California to see this restaurant. He is amazed that people wait outside the restaurant to get in. He tries the food. It is great. And the restaurant is so clean.

Kroc asks the brothers to open restaurants like this. The brothers say they make enough money. Kroc tells the brothers they can make more money. He can open other McDonald’s like this one. He will give them some money for these restaurants. The brothers agree.

It is 1955. Kroc opens two other McDonald’s. But people want more. Soon there are hundreds of McDonald’s. The brothers have enough money. They sell McDonald’s to Ray Kroc. He pays $ 2.5 million.

Kroc becomes very rich. And the brothers? They are happy with their quiet life.

5. Superman

“Look up in the sky. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!” Everyone knows Superman. Old people know Superman. Young people know Superman. He is famous. Millions of people buy Superman comic books.

Here is the story of Superman. It is 1939. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster are high school students. Jerry wants to be a writer. Joe wants to be an artist. They like to work together. One writes, the other draws pictures. They write stories with pictures for comic books.

One day, Jerry has a great new idea. It is Superman! Superman is from another planet. But nobody knows. He lives like an ordinary person. Superman does good things for people. Joe draws Superman. Joe and Jerry want to sell their story. They want to make money. But nobody buys Superman. Finally, after many years, someone wants to buy Superman. Jerry and Joe are very excited. But they sell Superman for only a little money.

Superman becomes a great success. The people who own Superman make millions of dollars. But Joe and Jerry are poor.

It is 1975. Joe cannot see well now. He cannot draw. He lives in a small apartment. Jerry works for very little money. The two men are both old and poor. They are angry, too. They tell the newspaper about their situation. Finally, the owners of Superman give Joe and Jerry some money. The money helps the old men. But it is not still much. Other people make a lot more money from Superman. But Joe and Jerry are not so lucky.

6. Potato Chips

Potato chips are America’s favorite snack. Where do potato chips come from? It’s 1853. A Native American named George Crum makes the first potato chips. Crum is a chef in an expensive restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. One day, a customer does not like the French fries. He says they are too thick. So Crum makes more, this time thinner. The customer still does not like them. Crum gets mad. He decides to make the customer angry. So he cuts the potatoes very, very thin. The customer loves them.

Other people want Crum’s potato chips. Now, there is a new food on the menu —Saratoga

4

Soon Crum opens his own restaurant and he makes his special chips.

It takes a long time to make potato chips. People peel the potatoes by hand. Then, in 1920, the automatic potato peeler changes everything. Now it is faster and easier to make potato chips. Now potato chips is not a specialty. They are a popular snack food, but only in the North.

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and

D). You should decide on the best choice.

Passage One

Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.

40 years ago the idea of disabled people doing sport was never heard of. But when the annual games for the disabled were started at Stoke Mandeville, England in 1948 by Sir Ludwing Guttmann, the situation began to change.

Sir Ludwing Guttmann, who had been driven to England in 1939 from Nazi Germany, had been asked by the British government to set up an injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London. His ideas about treating injuries included sport for the disabled.

In the first games just two teams of injured soldiers took part. The next year, 1949, five teams took part. From those beginnings, things have developed fast. Teams now come from abroad to Stoke Mandeville every year. In 1960 the first Olympics for the Disabled were held in Rome. Now,

SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 2)9

every four years the Olympic Games for the Disabled are held, if possible, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games although they are organized separately. In other years Games for the Disabled are still held at Stoke Mandeville. In the 1984 wheelchair Olympic Games, 1064 wheelchair athletes from about 40 countries took part. Unfortunately, they were held at Stoke Mandeville and not in Los Angeles, along with other Olympics.

The Games have been a great success in promoting international friendship and understanding, and in proving that being disabled does not mean you can’t enjoy sport. One small source of disappointment for those who organize and take part in the games, however, has been the unwillingness of the International Olympic Committee to include disabled events at the Olympic Games for the able-bodied.

Perhaps a few more years are still needed to convince those fortunate enough not to be disabled that their disabled fellow athletes should not be excluded.

57. The first games for the disabled were held _______ after Sir Ludwing Guttmann arrived in

England.

A) 40 years B) 21 years

C) 10 years D) 9 years

58. Besides Stoke Mandeville, surely the games for the disabled were once held in _______.

A) New York B) London

C) Rome D) Los Angeles

59. In Paragraph 3, the word “athletes” means _______.

A) people who support the games B) people who watch the games

C) people who organize the games D) people who compete in the games

60. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A) Sir Ludwing Guttmann is an early organizer of the games for the disabled.

B) Sir ludwing Guttmann is an injured soldier.

C) Sir Ludwing Guttmann is from Germany.

D) Sir Ludwing Guttmann is welcomed by the British government.

61. From the passage, we may conclude that the writer is _______.

A) one of the organizers of the games for the disabled

B) a disabled person who once took part in the games

C) against holding the games for the disabled

D) in favor of holding the games for the disabled

Passage Two

Question 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.

Books are to mankind what memory is to the individual. They contain the history of our race, the discoveries we have made, the accumulated knowledge and experience of ages. They picture for us the marvels and beauties of nature, help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering, change hours of weariness into moments of delight, store our minds with ideas, fill them

10

外教社?《大学英语》(全新版)2级学业测试with good and happy thoughts, and lift us out of and above ourselves.

Many of those who have had, as we say, all that this world can give, have yet told us they owed much of their purest happiness to books. Aseham, in “The Schoolmaster,” tells a touching story of his last visit to Lady Jane Grey. He found her sitting in an oriel window reading Plato’s beautiful account of the death of Socrates. Her father and mother were hunting in the park. The hounds were in full cry and their voices came in through the open window. He expressed his surprise that she had not joined them. But, said she, “I wish that all their pleasure in the park is but a shadow to the pleasure I find in Plato.”

Macaulay had wealth and fame, rank and power, and yet he tells us in his biography that he owed the happiest hours of his life to books. In a charming letter to a little girl, he says: “Thank you for your very pretty letter. I am always glad to make my little girl happy, and nothing pleases me so much as to see that she likes books, for when she is as old as I am, she will find that they are better than all the tarts and cakes, toys and plays, and sights in the world. If any one would make me the greatest king that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants, on condition that I should not read books, I would not be a king. I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.”

Books, indeed, endow us with a whole enchanted palace of thoughts. “There is a wider prospect,” says Jean Paul Richter, “from Parnassus than from a throne.” In one way they give us an even more vivid idea than the actual reality, just as reflections are often more beautiful than real nature. “All are mirrors,” says George Macdonald. “The commonest room is a room in a poem when I look in the glass.”

Precious and priceless are the blessings which the books scatter around our daily paths. We walk, in imagination, with the noblest spirits, through the most sublime and enchanting regions.

62. This passage argues that _______.

A)books are the memory of an individual

B)books can tell us what kind of memory an individual has

C)human beings need books just as an individual needs memory

D)an individual needs books to help him memorize what has happened

63. According to the passage, books can _______.

A) change our mood B) change the time-schedule of our activity

C) improve our social position D) keep us in sadness

64. Lady Jane Grey _______.

A)saw her parents hunting in the shadow in the park

B)knew that her parents enjoyed hunting in the shadow

C)believed that her parents’ pleasure in hunting was inferior to hers in reading Plato

D)enjoyed sitting in the shadow near window opening to a park while reading Plato’s works

65. It can be inferred from this passage that Macaulay _______.

A)used to be a king

B)is very poor now because he likes books more than wealth and power

C)likes his little girl because she always wears a smile on her face

D)finds real happiness in reading books

M: But you know, Zara. It is partly their own fault. You should never let anyone like that in unless you are expecting them.

W: But someone comes to the door and says electricity or gas, and you automatically think they are OK, especially if they flash a card to you.

M: Does this man have an ID then?

W: Yes, that’s just it. It seems he used to work for the electricity board at one time. According to the paper, the police are warning people especially pensioners not to admit anyone unless they have an appointment. It’s a bit sad. One old lady told them she’d just been to the post office to draw her pension when he called, she said he must have followed her to her home. He stole all her pension.

M: But what does he look like? Surely they must have a description.

W: Oh yes, they have. Let’s see. In his 30s, tall, bushy dark hair, slight northern accent. Sounds a bit like you actually.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

Conversation Two

W: Is there anything we could do better?

M: Your service is terrific, but you are kind of expensive.

W: Is our company meeting your expectations?

M: Pretty much, though there’s always room for improvement.

W: What could we do to improve our service?

M: I would appreciate quicker responses from your staff.

W: How would you rate our products?

M: Your products are great; although your customer service could be better.

W: I’m interested to hear your feedback regarding our products.

M: Overall, I’d say I’m pretty satisfied.

W: We pride ourselves on delivering on time.

M: That’s good because I don’t appreciate getting things late.

W: Our technical support is known for its excellence.

M: So you solve problems faster than the other guys?

W: We constantly measure feedback from our customers so that we improve.

M: You have listened and responded to my past criticisms.

W: We have won awards for our quality.

M: Fine. But you’ll have to prove your quality to me.

W: Our customer satisfaction scores are among the best in the industry.

Section B

Directions:In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you

hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B),

C) and D).

Passage One

If you visit a big city anywhere in the world, you will probably find a restaurant would serve the food of your own native country. Most large cities in the United States offer international sample of foods. Many people enjoy eating the food of other nations. This is probably one reason why there are so many different kinds of restaurants in the United States. A second reason is that many Americans come from other parts of the world. They enjoy tasting the foods of their native lands. In the city of Detroit, for example, there are many people from Western Europe, Greece, Latin America, and the Far East. There are many restaurants in Detroit which serve the foods of these areas. There are many other international restaurants too. Americans enjoy the foods in these restaurants as well as the opportunity to better understand the people and their way of life. One of the most common international restaurants to be found in the United States is the Italian restaurant. The restaurant may be a small business run by a single family. The mother of the family cooks all of the dishes, and the father and children serve the people who come to eat there. Or it may be a large restaurant owned by several different people who worked together in the business. Many Italian dishes that Americans enjoy are made with meats, tomatoes and cheese. They are very delicious and tasty.

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. Why are there so many international restaurants in the United States?

27. Why do Americans like to go to international restaurants apart from enjoying the foods there?

28. How is the typical Italian family restaurant run in the United States?

Passage Two

Nowadays, there is a growing awareness of the problem of a rapidly increasing world population. This is largely the result of improved medical skill, which have lowered the death rate and at the same time raised the birth rate by increasing live births and the number of babies who survive early childhood. There is a growing realization that food production cannot keep pace with these increases, the result of which is that in some countries people are already starving to death while many millions more suffer from lack of nutrition. This problem is further complicated by the fact that in places like America and Europe we obtain by trade and consume far more food and resources like oil than, say, the average Indian, thus leaving even less for the people in the underdeveloped areas to survive on. World population is rising at a rate of two percent a year, and the fastest growing region is Latin America, while Africa and Asia closely follow it. However, the largest absolute addition to the world population is in Asia which at present contains about three-fifths of the people of the world.

Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. What is not the result of improved medical skill?

30. At what rate is the world population increasing a year?

31. What is the second fastest growing region in the world in terms of population?

Passage Three

In the eyes of many people, city life is attractive with all its advantages and convenience, yet they don’t see the other side of the picture. First, with the expansion of the c ity, housing has become a serious problem for city people. Then, there is the problem of pollution: harmful gases from vehicles and poisonous water from factories pollute your surroundings; noise continually disturbs your peace and rest and drives you mad. Thirdly, modern city life puts a high pressure upon people; you have to hurry to and from work; you have to dodge in so as to avoid bumping into the flood of people, bicycles, cars, buses…; all day long you are under great stress. Fourthly, big cities also cause some social problems. Of which high crime rate is the most serious one. People are justifiably in fear of becoming victims of burglary, robbery, murder and other crimes at any time. They should find some ways to cope with all these problems.

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

32. What may drive city people mad, according to the passage?

33. What put city people under great pressure?

34. What are city people constantly in fear of?

35. What is this passage mainly about?

Section C

Directions:In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing
