PART FlVE

Questions 23-28

·Read the article below about problems in doing international trade.

·For each question(23-28),choose the correct answer.

·Mark one letter(A,B or C).

PROBLEMS IN DOING INTERNATIONAL TRADE

When companies do business overseas.they come in contact with people from different cultures. These individuals often speak different languages and have their own particular custom and manners. These differences can create problems. For example,in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there.Foreign business people who are tardy are often left outside to be kept waiting as a means of letting them know the importance of promptness.Unless one is aware of such unexpected behaviors.he may end up insulting the people with whom he hopes to establish trade relations.

A second traditional problem is that of monetary conversions. For example, if a transaction is conducted with Russia, payment may be made in rubles. Of course, this currency is of little value to the American firm. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the foreign currency to American dollars. How much are these Russian rubles worth in terms of dollars? This conversion rate is determined by every market, where the currencies of countries are bought and sold. Thus there is an established rate, although it will often fluctuate from day to day. For example, the ruble may be worth 0.75 on Monday and 0.72 on Tuesday because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at 0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As a

result, conversion may finally come at 0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.

A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict imports. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.

23.What is the relationship between culture and international trade? A.Cultures in different countries may help establishing trade relations.

B.Companies can do business overseas without paying attention to different cultures

C.Misunderstanding in international trade may result from different cultures.

24.What is done to tardy business people in France?

A.They are often left outdoors waiting.

B.They are often insulted.

C.They often suffer from coldness.

25.According to the passage, conversion rates

A.are determined by financial institutions.

B.vary from day to day.

C.are agreed upon by two trading countries.

26.The intended audience of this passage are

A.businessmen aiming at overseas market.

B.business people.

C.professors of economics.

27.What can we learn about trade barriers?

A.Due to trade barriers, all goods can be shipped abroad in all countries.

B.In US strategic military material can be exported freely. C.There are more import barriers than export barriers.

28.Which of the following is likely to be discussed in the next paragraph?

A.Quotas and tariffs.

B.Measures to break, down trade barriers.

C.Reasons for imposing trading barriers.

SPEAKING

PART ONE

略PART TWO

A.

It is very hard to work in a different culture, since everything you have taken for granted has changed-no family, no friends, even no acquaintances. If living conditions are better, life and work can be easier in a different culture. Food is the most important. If

familiar food is available in this new working place, the symptom of homesickness will be lessened.

Besides, a comfortable apartment can make life much less tougher.

In addition to a comfortable living condition, the ability to speak the host language will help a lot. As long as you are fluent in the host language, you can make many new friends very soon, and your relationship with your colleagues will definitely become better.

B.

Preparation is necessary when you are going to negotiate a deal. First, you'd better do a through research about the counterpart company and also about this deal. Second, you need to decide both

your "top line" and "bottom line".

Try your best to reach the "top line" and never give up your "bottom line".

The situation at the negotiation table is changing every minute. You have to be considerate to your counterpart and never lose your temper.

Or else you will endanger your relationship with your counterpart and thus your company will suffer a loss.

PART THREE

A: Hey, you are going to Britain next week, excited?

B: Yes, of course, but there is a lot of preparation to do. I've

never been abroad before.

A: Let me help you. Have you brought a dictionary with you? No offense, but I'm afraid your English is not enough for you to live in Britain for two month.

B: It is already in my luggage. What else? Hey, do you think I should bring my laptop?

A: Of course, laptops in Britain are much different, they are

installed with English systems. Oh, by the way, bring you digital camera. You know,Britain is very beautiful. And of course your cellphone.

B: Ah, that's very helpful. Let me think, what else?

A:A small first aid box will save your life in an emergency.I mean, you never know what will happen. Oh, have you brought some gifts for your clients?

B: Don't worry, they are already in my luggage.

Oh, I'm a fool, I forgot my passport!

Examiner's question:

Which do you think are the three most important

things should be included in the luggage?

Key: passport; dictionary; laptop
