Phys ed (physical education) is making a comeback as a part of the school core curriculum (核心课程), but with a difference. While group sports are still part of the curriculum, the new way is to teach skills that are useful beyond gym class. Instead of learning how to climb a rope, children are taught to lift weights, balance their diets and build physical endurance(忍耐力). In this way, kids are given the tools and skills and experiences so they can lead a physically active life the rest of their life.

Considering that 15 percent of American children 6 to 18 are overweight, supporters say more money and thought must be put into phys ed curriculum. In many cases, that may mean not just replacing the old gym-class model with fitness programs but also starting up phys ed programs because school boards often "put P.E. on the chopping block(砧板), cutting it entirely or decreasing its teachers or the days it is offered," says Alicia Moag-Stahlberg, the executive director of Action for Health Kids. The difference in phys ed programs is partly due to the lack of a national standard. "Physical education needs to be part of the core curriculum," she added.

The wisdom of the new approach has some scientific support. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have showed how effective the fit-for-life model of gym class can be. They observed how 50 overweight children lost more weight when they cycled and skied cross-country (越野)

than when they played sports. The researchers also found that teaching sports like football resulted in less overall movement, partly because some reluctant students were able to sit on the bench.

Another problem with simply teaching group sports in gym class is that only a small percentage of students continue playing them after graduating from high school. The new method teaches skills that translate to adulthood.

25. According to the passage, what is usually taught in the old gym class?

A. Lift weights.

B. Climb a rope.

C. Cycle.

D. Have a balanced diet.

26. What does Alicia Moag-Stahlberg mean by saying “some sch ool boards put P.E. on the chopping block”?

A. Schools do not pay enough attention to P. E..

B. Schools welcome P.E. but do not have time for it.

C. Schools put P. E. in the first place.

D. Schools cut down other subjects’ time for P.

E..

27. W hat’s the difference between the come-back phys ed and the ordinary gym-class model?

A. The Phys ed teaches group sports.

B. The Phys ed provides more fitness programs.

C. The Phys ed teaches tools and skills which could be used in the future life.

D. The Phys ed has more support from the government.

C

Research conducted at Brunel University has confirmed that listening to music while you exercise could increase your endurance(耐力) by up to 15%. While many athletes usually use music to help themselves in their training, this is the first time that research has actually proved its benefits. People often listen to music while running or using the gym, and at the same time instructors like to encourage people with music. Now, it seems that this could supply more than an aid to timing and something to turn attention from the burn.

However, the research conducted by Dr. Costas Karageorghis found that only certain types of music aid the training and some music is totally inappropriate(不适当的). There is also a speed that must be followed and results. Dr Darageorghis has spent years working on the relationship between music and exercise, and his latest findings were put into practice in London recently. The

Run to the Beat London half marathon featured a number of music stations along the rout, with tracks scientifically selected to help runners achieve their greatest potential(潜力).

Music can have such a powerful effect on your mood that it’s hardly surprising that it can help improve endurance levels during exercise. The fact that research now confirms this should be a real help for both amateur and professional athletes, as they can push themselves a little bit further simply by playing the right music. It seems that music helps to increase the actual enjoyment of exercise as well, making it more of a pleasure than a chore(乏味的事).

Anyone who is using exercise as part of their weight loss programme will be particularly pleased by this news as it should give them that extra push when the going gets tough.

28. Why is the research conducted at Brunel University important?

A. It means so much to instructors.

B. It proves the various benefits of music.

C. It proves music is a good aid to timing.

D. It first proves music is good for athletes.

29. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A. Rock music is better when we exercise.

B. We should choose proper music tracks while exercising.

C. Music helps best when one is running a marathon.

D. We should listen to various types of music while exercising.

30. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to _______.

A. the news

B. music

C. exercise

D. the programme

31. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. Music helps in weight loss.

B. Music can improve your moods.

C. Music can make you exercise better.

D. Music takes your attention away while you exercise.

Riffat” Monaf, an interesting name and an even more interesting person. Her introduction took place about six years ago, and since then I have never met a more influential person in my life. Mrs Monaf not only conquered me with her vast knowledge of geography, but also won me over with her smile and warm eyes. It was in her class that I traveled to the highest mountains and to the deepest seas from the comfort of the classroom. I learned about the vast oceans, the erupting volcanoes, the snow-capped mountains and the green valleys. She would often relate her adventures about traveling to different parts of the world. Never can I forget the glory of her face when she talks about how truly beautiful this world is. If I search back my love for the environment and geography, I find her to be the source of my love for preserving nature. If one day I became an environmentalist, I know that I'll thank her for it. Apart from this, she has always greeted me with open arms and she calls her students “ my children ”Mrs. Monaf's morals and values rubbed off me deeply and I have always taken her advice into consideration. She has been one of the most consistently good things in my life. Currently, she is fighting a battle against breast cancer, and it pains me to know that after all she has done for me; I can do nothing for her except pray. Whenever I see her in school, she still keeps that kind smile and an expression so soft that it trembles my heart. Mrs Monaf still talks enthusiastically about geography, and I know that I can never see what a truly great person she has been in my life. . (1) What can we learn from the second paragraph?

Flying for a long time, you finally arrive at the place where you can relax—your hotel room. Now you throwyour bag on the bed, turn on the TV and watch an international news programme on a satellite channel probably from UK or the USA. The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard. However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don't normally see. The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices. This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter.
