Your Laptop Care Guide

Your laptop(笔记本电脑)is not just an expensive toy—it‘s one of your most important assets while at work and play. It‘s extremely important that you take good care of it. You should know about each piece of the hardware, and follow these simple guidelines.

Don’t Eat or Drink near Your Laptop!

Fluids are the number one energy of electronic items. If you do spill something on or in your laptop, turn the computer off immediately and unplug it. If there is standing liquid, try to dry that liquid off. Leave the laptop off and sitting at least overnight to allow time for it to dry.

Our INTREON Care Centre can repair light to medium damage, but you can be without your laptop for days if any of its major components has to be replaced. If something catastrophic does occur, you may wish to request for a laptop from us or to do a trade-in for a newer model.

Don’t Move Your Laptop While It Is On!

This can severely damage your hard drive, and may cause you to lose files.

In the case of hard disk damage, our specialized DATA RECOVERY laboratory will help you retrieve your priceless data using sophisticated recovery equipment.

Don’t Leave It in Your Car, an Unlocked Locker, or a Classroom!

Laptop thefts in Singapore are relatively rare, but not impossible, and it will cost you a minimum of a few thousands of dollars to get a new laptop, not to mention all files you lost.

Back up Your Personal Files Regularly!

Put your personal files on an extremely hard drive, which is automatically backed up daily, burn a CD or DVD, or you can choose to do a HARD-DISK CLOSING before you clean up or reformat your system for better performance.

Don’t Download Random Software off the Internet!

Most of these ―seemingly useful‖software contain spy-ware, which will damage your windows installation, waste resources, generate pop-up ads, and report your personal information back to the company that provided that software. A kitten that around your screen may be cute, but you won't think it is when you need to bring your laptop to our INTREON Care Centre for repair!

Don’t Dismantle Your Laptop or Attempt Repair!

Laptop repair is a specialized skill and it is a dynamic problem solving process. If you are untrained, you easily damage the delicate components of your laptop, lose your valuable data, or worse suffer from electrical shocks.

Keep Y our Laptop Within the Safe Temperature Range!

Every laptop has a recommended safe range of operating temperature (usually about 10-35 degree Celsius). Prolonged exposure of a laptop to extreme cold or hot temperature can result in glitches(故障)and possible hardware damage. As such, we offer the following recommendation:

●Don‘t leave your laptop sitting in the car for extended periods of time. This applies during both hot

and cold weather.

●Don‘t leave the laptop computer sitting exposed to direct sunlight or near any heat source for

extended periods of time.

Avoid Static Electricity(静电)and Magnetic Fields!

Static is the enemy. It can ruin your system and your disks. Avoid magnetic fields. Be careful with the TVs, speakers and phones. Both can cause problems for laptop and diskettes.

Consider Getting Your Laptop Insured!

Is your laptop insured? Find out from your authorized agents: What‘s covered? Hoe much will you pay if something happens? A good insurance will come in handy especially when you are traveling overseas.

Take Good Care of Y our LCD.

The screen on a laptop is an LCD (liquid crystal display) composed of individual transistors at every pixel(像素). The screens of the laptop have 1,470,000 pixels.

Each pixel is a separate transistor/liquid crystal combination. If any one is damaged you will have a permanent black spot on your screen. To be sure, the loss of a single pixel will not make your screen unusable, but if you physically damage the screen you will probably lose more than a single pixel.

The screen is the single most expensive part of your laptop. Most damage to it is non-repairable.

2

Replacing it can cost between $600-$1,000.

Here are some tips for you to take care of LCD.

Keep your screen in good shape; stay away fro m it. That‘s to say, do not poke it with your finger—or even worse—with a pen or a pencil. If you want to show something on the screen to someone else, point ―from a distance‖ or use your mouse and cursor(指针)to point to the item of interest (incidentally, you can make your cursor much larger and/or change its shape if you find it hard to see on the screen).

If you do get fingerprints or dirt on your screen, you can clean it—with care and the proper cleaning solution. Remember, your laptop screen surface is thin, flexible, not glass. DO NOT use glass cleaner. The ammonia(氨)that is a primary component of most glass cleaners will eventually yellow the screen and make it brittle. Your first attempt to clean a screen should be with a soft cloth (not paper towels) damaged with water. If a gentle wipe with this does work, then use rubbing alcohol at 50% or less strength. You can buy commercial cleaning solutions and cleaning pads for computer screen, but make sure they specially say ―for laptop or LCD screens‖. Never pour or spray it directly onto the screen where it may run off and damage electronic components. The same care tips hold true for any LCD screen that you may have—for a desktop computer or TV as well as for laptops.

Other Considerations

We would recommend getting some sort of padded carrying cases for your computer. Not only does it provide greater protection for your laptop in case of impact, but it also makes it easier to carry your laptop. Most major computer stores and department stores carry a wide variety of padded cases to suit your needs and tastes.

Part ⅣReading Comprehension (Reading in depth)(25minutes)

Section A Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.

A coeducational(男女合校的)school offers children less than a true version of society in miniature (缩影). Boys and girls are given the 47 to get to know each other, to learn to live together from their earliest years. They are put in a position where they can compare themselves with each other in terms of 48 ability, athletic achievement and many of the extracurricular activities which are part of school life. What a practical 49 it is (to give just a small example) to be able to put on a school play in which the male parts will be taken by boys and the female parts by girls! What nonsense coeducation makes of the argument that boys are cleverer than girls or vice versa. When 50 , boys and girls are made3 to feel that they are a race apart. In a coeducational school, everything falls into its 51 place.

The greatest contribution of coeducational school is 52 the healthy attitude to life it encourages. Boys don‘t grow up believing that women are 53 creatures. Girls don‘t grow up imagining that men are romantic heroes. Years of living together at school remove illusions of this kind. The awkward stage of adolescence brings into sharp focus some of the physical and 54 problems involved in growing up. These can better be 55 in a coeducational environment. When the time comes for the pupils to leave school, they are fully prepared to 56 society as well-adjusted adults. They have already had years of experience in coping with many of the problems that face men and women.

Section B Directions: there are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). you should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

Passage One Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.

Internet voting happens all the time, but usually it‘s confined to topics such as ―Who is the cutest cast member of Party of Five?‖ soon, however, people will be able to cast their ballots for president on the Internet. In March, Arizona Democrats will vote online in their state‘s presidential primary, and Florida and Washington are considering online voting. The military plans to allow a small test group of overseas soldiers to vote via the internet this November.

The internet voting is growing rapidly. There are civic(市民的)engagement enthusiasts who see it as a way to prevent the drop in voter turnout. Then there are the internet fans, who think the Internet is going to change everything, so why not politics? Most important are the people who make the plan for developing software for online voting. Imagine the retail price of that software, then multiply it by every state and city government, and suddenly a lot of internet capitalists develop a deeply felt concern for increasing voter turnout.

Some problems will arise. Hackers and some politicians could break into a voting database and make the secret ballot not so secret. A massive computer failure would have disastrous consequences. Just as serious, online voting could distort participation levels, at least, to the wealthy and cyber-connected.

In the long run, however, online voting might make little difference. Since the 1960s, the government has made numerous attempts to energize nonvoters by making it easier for them to get to the polls, extending voting hours, lowering the voting age, etc. Still, voter turnout has decreased steadily. Political scientists believe the impotent cause is indifference and dislike to politics, not the inconvenience of voting. Putting a ballot on the internet might even further depress turnout by cheapening one of the holy

4

ceremonies of democracy. ―the business of democracy,‖ says Curtis Gans, an analyst of voting behavior, ―shouldn't be the same as getting your e-mail.‖

Passage Two Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.

One greater benefit of the Web is that it allows us to move information online that now resides in paper form. Electronic commerce is increasing steadily. It is difficult to measure, because a lot of electronics commerce involves existing buyers and sellers who are simply moving paper-based transactions to the Web. That is not new business. Microsoft, for example, purchases millions of dollars of PCs online instead of by paper. However, that is not a fundamental change; it has just improved the efficiency of an existing process. The biggest impact had occurred where electronics commerce matches buyers and sellers who would not previously have found each other. That is a new type of commerce.

Today, about half of all PCs are still not connected to the Web. Getting communications costs down and making all the software will bring in those people. And that , in turn, will move us closer to the critical mass that will make the Web lifestyle everyone‘s lifestyle.

The boundary between a television set and a PC will be blurred because even the set-top box that you connect up to your cable or satellite will have a processor more powerful than what we have today in the most expensive PC. This will, in effect, make your television a computer.

Interaction with the Web also will improve, making it much easier for people to be involved. Today the keyboards we use to search the Web often display too may article to sort through, many of them out of context. If you want to learn about the fastest computer chip available, you might end up getting responses instead about potato chips being delivered in fast trucks. If you ask about the speed of chips, the result will be about computers, not potatoes.

To predict that it will take over ten years for these changes to happen is probably pessimistic. We usually overestimate what can we do in two years and underestimate what we can do in ten. The Web will be as much a way of life as the car by 2008 or even earlier.

62. Electronic commerce becomes a new type of commerce when .

A) paper-based trading is moves on to the Web

B) the efficiency of the existing process is improved by the Internet

C) a Web site offers more goods than a store

63. One of the reasons why half of PCs are not connected to the Web is that .

A) the software is not user-friendly B) people have no interest in the Web

C) the Web information is not reliable

D) people are too busy to get connected to the Web

64. The use of computer will be much more widespread when .

A) the boundary between the computer and the TV disappears

B) electronics commerce brings about a fundamental change

C) computer and communication become simple and cheaper

D) governments begin to move administration online

65. The example of photo chips in the passage is used to illustrate .

A) the Web‘s ineffective interaction B) the Web‘s too mush information

C) the Web‘s lack of speed D) the Web‘s inaccurate response

66. In this passage the author is trying to show that .

A) everyone will be able to use computer and the Web by 2008

B) computers will be able to recognize speech in 10-year time

C) the use of the Web will become more common and easier n the future

Preparing for Tests

Ideally it should be love of learning, achievement, and self-improvement that prompts all learning. But the average student is probably motivated by a more tangible, immediate, and pressuring reason—the requirement to take and pass tests. Few high school students are not concerned with the aptitude and achievement tests that they must take to get into college, Even students not planning to attend college will take placement, adaptability, and promotion tests if they are to succeed in their field. Promotion in the armed services does not depend on physical prowess(本领) and length of service. It depends, instead, on the ability to study and pass promotional tests. You need to understand the importance of test, the best methods of preparation, the common sense required for both a physical and mental approach to them, how to read instructions and questions correctly, and how to answer the way the test or teacher expects you to answer. This is one of the most valuable psychological benefits that can come from your education. Attitude toward tests

Dr. Francis P. Robinso n in his book, Effective study, poses a question: ―Did you ever thank a teacher for giving a test?‖. At first glance you are not likely to find much in your thinking that would help inspire a ―yes‖. The teacher spends a lot of time preparing the test quest ions. After you have taken the test, the teacher spends many hours carefully evaluating your paper. Mistakes are marked so that when your paper is returned you can go over them and perhaps write in corrections. Then you will not make the same mistakes again.

Test as a Personal Battle

Do you, like many of your fellow students, consider the test or examination as a personal battle which the teacher wages in an attempt to defeat you, or do you see it as a contest in which one tries to outwit the other? If this is your towards, you probably do one of two thing when the teacher returns your paper to you. One, you throw it away without checking an incomplete answer against the facts as studied, you approach the teacher and demand to know why points were taken off. This is the most negative of approaches. The difference in attitude can be seen in the difference between two questions: ―why did you take off points on this question?‖ and ―what should I included that I did not?‖

Fear of Taking Tests

6

Another attitude that you should avoid is that of fear. Fear of taking tests results in tension and disturbed thinking. These, in turn, produce blind spots (not being able to remember answers that your knew ten minutes before the test)and careless mistakes. This fear also keeps people from venturing into new areas in life. They may visualize the new method, the better tool, or the strong bridge, but they hesitate until someone else realizes their dreams.

Fear prevents success on tests and examinations because fear conditions the mind for failure. Students who are afraid start in a state of confusion and disorder. Thus they throw away the advantages they have gotten by preparation. Students who approach tests with fear are almost always characterized by the following (1)Their grade is considerably lower than their daily recitation grades, sometimes as much as twenty points lower. (2)They complain about the teacher--- insufficient explanation, lack of detailed review, etc. (3)They found fault with the test materials—too long, not the type of questions expected and studied for, didn‘t understand the wording of questions. (4) Their preparation consists of a frantic last-ditch effort. They suffer from loss of sleep almost to the point of total exhaustion, and often loss of important notes or review material just when they are needed most. (5)Fear drives these students to study for the test with another student. Invariably they choose a study companion who has the same attitude of fear. Often the other student‘s knowledge of the subject is only equal to, or perhaps less than, their own.

If you recognize two or more of these characteristics as behavior patterns which you practice at test and examination time, you should change your attitude as quickly as possible. To continue then is to subject yourself to a climate of tension and fear and to condition yourself for defeat.

A Positive Approach To Tests

A third attitude is wholly positive. It is the attitude of challenge, self-confidence, and content reliability. Students who accept a test as a challenge to show the teacher the extent of their knowledge of the subject and to improve their grades are stimulated. This stimulation produces the energy needed to think clearly and to act with precision over a longer period of concentration than the daily recitation requires. The attitude of challenge is reflected by enterprising rather than burdensome preparation. Self-confidence develops from this adequate preparation. There is no room for tension and fear. Even a questionable answer is approached by a calculated reliability. The belief is that a worthwhile answer, although perhaps only partially correct, and can be worked out. This attitude requires the relationship between student and teacher, and question and answer, always to be one of cooperative production rather than competitive destruction.

To adopt an attitude of challenge and self-confidence toward tests and examinations, you must first understand the real purposes of test.

Reasons for tests

Motivation

From the student‘s poi nt of view, the first reason for tests is motivation. Few of us are self-disciplined and motivated enough to educate ourselves without direction and requirement. Being tested periodically on accumulated knowledge is a strong motivating force.Chance to Show knowledge

A second reason for tests is that they provide students with a chance to show how much they have

learned. Daily recitation does not provide such an opportunity. A test gives the students a chance to show their ability to organize and unify large volumes of material. This is not possible in preparing for day-to-day assignments.

Prediction of Future Tests

A third reason is that students gain insight into what the teacher considers most important. If test questions deals with main topics and essential principles, the student can accurately estimate the nature of future and large tests.

Discovery of Weaknesses and Progress

A fourth important reason is that students can discover both their shortcomings and the extent of their progress. They can carefully study their errors and the general areas in which they occur. They can see a pattern to their errors. They can take steps to correct their weaknesses. They can measure their progress in that subject. And most important of all, they can measure whether or not their mental growth is keeping up with the demand of the subject.

Now that you understand the reasons for tests and examinations, and how they benefit both student and teacher, you should not groan when a test is announced. Do not approach it as a burdensome chore or with light indifference. Approach it with an honest and determined effort for self-improvement. If you manages this, you grade will manage itself.

1. The writer introduces three major attitudes towards tests and the reasons to take tests.

2. Taking a test as a battle is a positive attitude towards tests that every student should have.

3. Fear of tests may even result in good performance in a test.

4. To take a test as a challenger or opportunity to show your teacher how well you have learned is a positive attitude towards tests.

5. Tests can motivate students to learn.

6. Tests may help teachers know how well the students have learned.

7. From tests, students can know whether they have made progress or not.

8. Through tests students can learn how much______.

9. Students will discover their ______ in tests

10. When students know about the reasons for tests, they will approach them with _____.

Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.

We can see how the product life cycle works by looking at the introduction of instant coffee. When it was introduced, most people did not like it as well as ―regular‖ coffee and it took several years to gain general 47_ (introduction stage). At one point, though, 48coffee grew rapidly in popularity and many brands were introduced (stage of rapid growth). After a while people become 49 to one brand and sales leveled off (stage of maturity). Sales went into a 50 decline when freeze-dried coffees were introduced (stage of decline). The importance of the product life cycle to marketers is this: different stages in the product life cycle call for different strategies. The goal is to 51product life so that sales and profits do not decline. One strategy is called market modification. It means that 52 managers look for new users and market sections. Did you know, e.g. that the backpacks that so many students carry today were 53 designed for the military? Market modification also means searching for 54 usage among present customers or going for a different market, such as senior citizens. A marketer may re-position the product to 55 to new market section. Another product 56 strategy is called product modification. It involves changing product

Section B Passage One

It is called softwood used to build houses, but these days it is producing nothing but hard feelings. In the United States, about 30% if such softwood comes from Canada. But on March 22nd. The Department of commerce announced that it would impose a tariff of around 29% on Canadian softwood. The Americans content that Canada is subsidizing its timber industry, and dumping wood on to its neighbor for sale at prices that do not cover its production cost.

Canadians hotly deny this, and the sides are hiring experts to fire each other. In Canada the provincial governments own forests, and have considerable freedom in pricing their ―stumpage‖, as standing trees are oddly called. American critics say the Canadians give away those uncut trees and estimate that Canadian logging companies pay as much as 60% less for standing trees than they would if the market set the price.

However, the Canadian experts concerned argue that stumpage fees cover only a small portion of what it costs a Canadian company to send lumber across the border and these companies have to build their own roads, reforest logged lands, and pay the cost of planning their sales. They feel they price their timber competitively. It is worth nothing that for years American companies were themselves accused of receiving subsidies; stumpage prices for trees cut down on federal land were long criticized as too low. Then they were quiet on the subject. Now most American-produced lumber comes from private forests, but government subsidies are cancelled.

In Seattle, Robb Dunn, president of a chain of ten lumber stores, says his customers cancelled, have to put up with higher prices. Some reckon the tariff will increase new-home prices by as much as $1,500. That may be a bit high. And rising interest rates may slow the American housing market, cutting demand. The two sides hope to continue talks. One way out might be an agreement under which Canada taxes its lumber companies until it reforms it s pricing policies to America‘s satisfaction. But Mr. Allan, for one, is not optimistic. The United States, he says, has not negotiated in good faith.

57. Why do Americans feel unhappy about Canadian softwood?

Passage Two

Since World War II, there has been a clearly noticeable trend, especially among the growing group of college students, toward early marriage. Many youths begin dating in the first stages of adolescence, ―go steady‖ through high school, and map before their former education has been completed. In some quarters, there is much clucking of middle-aged tongues over the ways of ―wayward youth‖. However, emotional maturity is no respecter of birthdays; it does not arrive automatically at twenty-one or twenty-five. Some achieve it surprisingly early, while others never do even in three-score years and ten.

Many students are marrying as an escape, not only from unsatisfying home life, but from their own

9

entered into as an escape cannot pr ove entirely successful. The fact is that marriage seldom solves one‘s

problem; more often, it merely accentuates them. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether the home as an

institution is capable of carrying all that the young are seeking to put into it; one might say in theological

terms, that they are forsaking one idol only to worship another. Young people correctly understand that

their parents are wrong in believing that ―success‖ is the ultimate good, but they wrongly believe that they

themselves have found the true centre of life‘s meaning. Their expectations of marriage are essentially

utopian and therefore incapable of fulfillment. They want too much, and tragic disillusionment is often

bond to follow.

Shall we, then, join the chorus of ―miseries‖over early marriage? One cannot generalize: all early

marriages are not bad any more than all the later ones are good. Satisfactory marriages are determined not

by age but by the emotional maturity of the partners. Therefore, each case must be judged on its own

merits. If the early marriage is not an escape, if it is entered into with relatively few illusions of false

expectations, and if it is economically feasible, why not? Good marriages can be made from sixteen to

sixty, and so can bad ones.

62. Middle-aged people seem to view the trend toward early marriage as _____.

A) a healthy sign B) an indication of growing responsibility on the part of youth

C) perfectly natural by today‘s standards D) an indication of immaturity of today‘s youth

63. The auth or suggests that many of today‘s early marriages are a result of ____.

A) escapism B) theological C) lack of education D)social development

64. The word ―accentuate‖ (line 4, Para 2) most probably means_____.

A) worsen B) threaten C) create D)dissolve

65. The author states that the home as an institution is _____.

A) incapable of being the basic unit of society B) unworthy of worship

C) a solution to most of young people‘s problems

D)probably incapable of being what many young people expect it to be.

66. It can be learned from the passage that ___

A) early marriage makes no difference to the beginning of miseries

B) a satisfactory marriage often depends on mutual emotional maturity of the couple

C) ―success‖ is the ultimate good for the youth

D) young people should marry without illusions

Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes)

Click

Women are beginning to experience that click! of recognition---that moment of truth that brings a gleam to our eyes and means the revolution has begun. Those clicks are coming faster, and women are getting angry. Not redneck-angry from screaming because we are so frustrated and unfulfilled, but clicking-things-into-place-angry. We have suddenly and shockingly seen the basic lack of order in what has been believed to be the natural order of things.

One little click turns on a thousand others.

In Houston, Texas, a friend of mine stood and watched her husband step over a pile of toys on the stairs, put there to be carried up. ―Why can‘t you get this stuff put away?‖ he mumbled. Click! ―You have two hands,‖ she said, turning away.

Last summer I got a letter from a man who wrote: ―I do not agree with your last article, and I am canceling my wife‘s subscription.‖ The next day I got a letter from his wife saying, ―I am not canceling my subscription.‖ Click!

On Fire Island, my weekend hostess and I had just finished cooking breakfast, lunch, and washing dishes for both. A male guest came wandering into the kitchen just as the last dish was being put away and said, ―How about something to eat?‖ He sat down, expectantly, and started to read the paper. Click! ―You work all week,‖ said the hostess, ―and I work all week, and if you want something to eat, you can get it, and wash up after it yourself.‖

In New York last fall, my neighbors----named Jones-----had a couple name Smith over for dinner. Mr. Smith kept telling his wife to get up and help Mrs. Jones. Click! Click! Two women radicalized at once.

A woman I know in St. Louis, who had begun to enjoy a little succeed writing a grain company‘s newsletters, came home to tell her husband about lunch in the executive dining room. She had planned a funny little story about the deeply humorous pomposity(自以为是) of the executives, when she noticed her husband rocking with laughter. ―Ho ho, my little wife in an executive dining room.‖ Click!

Last August, I was on a boat leaving an island in Maine. Two families were with me, and the mothers were discussing the troubles of cleaning up after a rental summer. ―Bob cleaned up the bathroom for me, didn‘t you, honey?‖she confided, gratefully patting her husband‘s knee. ―Well, what the hell, it‘s vacation,‖ he said fondly. The two women looked at each other, and the queerest change came over their faces. ―I got up at six this morning to make sandwiched for the trip home from this ?vacation ‘,‖ the first said. ―So I wonder why I‘ve thanked him at least six times for cleaning the bathroom? ‖ Click! Click!

In suburban Chicago, the party consisted of three couples. The women were a writer, a doctor, and a teacher. The men were all lawyers. As the last couple arrived, the host said, heartily, ―With a roomful of lawyers, we ought to have a good evening.‖ Silence. Click! ―What are we?‖ asked the teacher. ―Invisible?‖In an office, a political columnist, male, was waiting to see the editor-in-chief. Learning against a doorway, the columnist turned the first woman he saw and said, ―Listen, call Barry Brown and tell him I‘ll be late.‖ Click! It wasn‘t because she happened to be the chief editor herself that she refused to make the call.

In the end, we are all housewives, the natural people to turn to when there is something unpleasant, inconvenient, or inconclusive to be done. It will not do for women who have jobs to pretend that society‘s ills will be cured if all women are gainfully employed. In Russia, 70 percent of doctors and 20 percent of construction workers are women, but women still do all the housework. Some revolution, as the Russian women‘s saying goes, simply freed them to do twice the work.

They tell us we are being petty. The future improvement of civilization could not depend on who washes the dishes. Could it? Yes. The liberated society---with men, women, and children living as whole human beings, not halves divided by sex roles---depends on the steadfast search for new solutions to just such apparently unimportant problems, on new answers to tired old questions. Such questions as: Denise works as a waitress from 6 am to 3 pm. Her husband is a cabdriver, who moonlights on weekends as a doorman. They have four children, When her husband comes home at night, he asks, "What's for dinner?"

Jonathan and Joanne are both doctors. They have identical office hours. They come home in the evening to a dinner cooked by the housekeeper. When they go to bed, he drops his clothes on the floor and she picks them up. In the morning he asks, "Where is my pink and orange striped shirt?"

In moments of suburban strife, Fred often asks his wife, Alice, "Why haven't you mended my shirt

11

and lubricated the car? What else have you got to do but sit around the house all day?'"

According to insurance companies, it would cost Fred $8,000--$9,000 a year to replace Alice's services if she died. Alice, being an average ideal suburban housewife, works 99.6 hours a week---always feeling there is too much to be done and always guilty because it is never quite finished. Besides, her work doesn't seem important. After all, Fred is paid for doing whatever he does. Abstract statistics make no impact on Alice. "My situation is different," she says. Of course it is. All situations are different. But sooner or later she will experience---in a blinding click—a moment of truth. She will remember that she once had other interests, vague hopes, and great plans. She will decide that the work in the house is less important than reordering that work so she can consider her own life.

The problem is: What does she do then?

Part IV Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) (25 minutes)

Section A Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.

Oceanography has been defined as ―the application of all sciences to the study of the sea". Before the 19th century, scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between.

Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was __47_ to go to sea to further his work.

For most people the sea was _48__, and with the exception of early _49_ travelers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let _50_ to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that the question ―What is at the 51_of the oceans?‖ had to be answered with any commercial _52_ was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was _53_. The engineers had to know the depth profile(起伏形状) of the route to _54_ the length of cable that had to be manufactured.

It was to Maury of the U.S. Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned, in 1853, for _55_ on this manner. In the 1840s, Maury had been _56_ for encouraging voyages during which soundings(测深) were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea.

Section B Passage One Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.

We question the utility and validity of the Worst Teacher Award conducted on 29 November by Undergrad, a Students‘ Union magazine of our university. The main purpose behind the election was to give teachers an opportunity to review their teaching methods in light of the results.

Our concern is whether the election of one single teacher from each faculty by undergraduate students will substantially improve the quality of teaching. Surely this would be much better achieved by an extensive and standardized course-evaluation system.

According to the article on the page 33 of the 3rd edition of Undergrad, the writer and his colleagues decided that it was time to ―get their own back‖ on the teachers. There appears to be a strong aggressive tone on the whole. This seems contrary to the motive originally intended. We fear that an ―unpopularity poll‖ is what really results.

This election was governed by the regulations of the Best Teacher Award, which required a minimum of 15 percent of voters for the results to be valid. However, as there was a very poor turnout, 17 of the ―winners‖were elected by less than 15 percent, which greatly reduced the representativeness of the outcome.

The teachers involved are not even given details of the reasons for voting. We wonder how the organizing body can help these teachers improve their teaching methods when the evidence for their performance cannot be produced. The whole exercise is therefore worthless without these reasons made available.

A few popular newspapers have reported on the election, but the data shown are misleading. They do not show how many students voted for the teachers, merely rows of vague percentages. Most of the articles

13

do not even state the results of the election, but only the names of elected teachers. We object to their irresponsible behavior to both the voters and teachers alike. We believe the whole university wishes to strive for excellence in a constructive way.

Our conclusion is that the Worst Teacher Award has, from the beginning, lost sight of its virtuous purpose and has turned into something that destroys the image of our university teachers and, far worse, the mutual relationship between teachers and students. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡2上作答。

Passage Two Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.

Although the possibility of living a long and happy life nowadays is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing on the roads. Man versus the motorcar! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing.

It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel, his car becomes the extension of his personality, which often undoubtedly brings out a man‘s very worst qualities. Normally quiet and pleasant people may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering wheel. They swear; they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and utterly selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments and jealousies seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.

The surprising thing is that society smiles on the motorist and seems to tolerate his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; and the mass annual death becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten.

It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are extremely loose and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have a dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate.

Here are a few examples that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle be raised t at least 21; all vehicles should be put through annual tests for safety. Present drinking and driving laws should be made much stricter. Maximum and minimum speed limits should be imposed on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for manufacturers, as has been done in the U.S.A. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound terribly harsh. But remember: The world is for human beings, not motorcars.

63. What does the author think is society‘s attitude toward motorists?

A) Society laughs at motorists. B) Society tolerates their rude driving.

C) Society imposes a lot of restrictions on motorists.

D) Society encourages motorists to behave themselves.

Studies of friendship seem to implicate more complex factors. For example, one function friendship seems to fulfill is _67_ it supports the image we have _68_ ourselves, and _69_ the value of the attitude we hold. Certainly we appear to _70_ ourselves onto our friends; several studies have shown that we judge them to be more like us than _71_. This suggests that we ought to choose friends who are similar to us _72_ than those who would be _73_ (―opposites attract‖), a prediction which is supported by __74__ evidence, at least so _75_ as attitudes and beliefs are _76_. Part ⅡReading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)(15 minutes)

Will We Run Out of Water?

Picture a ―ghost ship‖ sinking into the sand, left to rot on dry land by a receding sea. Then imagine dust storms sweeping up toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers from the dry seabed and spewing them across towns and villages.

Seem like a scene from a movie about the end of the world? For people living near the Aral sea (咸海) in Central Asia, it‘s all too real. Th irty years ago, government planners diverted the rivers that flow into the sea in order to irrigate (provide water for ) farmland. As a result, the sea has shrunk to half its original size, stranding (使搁浅) ships on dry land. The seawater has tripled in salt content and become polluted, killing all 24 native species of fish.

Similar large--scale efforts to redirect water in other parts of the world have also ended in ecological crisis, according to numerous environmental groups. But many countries continue to build massive dams and irrigation systems, even though such projects can create more problems than they fix. Why? People in many parts of the world are desperate for water, and more people will need more water in the next century.

―Growing populations will worsen problems with water,‖ says Peter H.Gleick, an environmental scientist at the Pacific Institute for studies in Development, Environment, and Security, a research organization in California. He fears that by the year 2025, as many as one--third of the world‘s projected (预测的) 8.3 billion people will suffer from water shortages.

WHERE W ATER GOES

15

Only 2.5 percent of all water on Earth is freshwater, water suitable for drinking and growing food, says Sandra Postel, director of the Global Water Policy Project in Amherst, Mass. Two--thirds of this freshwater is locked in glaciers (冰山) and ice caps (冰盖). In fact, only a tiny percentage of freshwater is part of the water cycle, in which water evaporates and rises into the atmosphere, then condenses and falls back to Earth as precipitation (rain or snow).

Some precipitation runs off land to lakes and oceans, and some becomes groundwater, water that seeps into the earth. Much of this renewable freshwater ends up in remote places like the Amazon river basin in Brazil, where few people live. In fact, the world‘s population has access to only 12,500 cubic kilometers of freshwater—about the amount of water in Lake Superior(苏必利尔湖). And people use half of this amount already. ―If water demand continues to climb rapidly,‖ says Postel, ―there will be severe shortages and damage to the aquatic (水的) environment.‖

CLOSE TO HOME

Water woes(灾难) may seem remote to people living in rich countries like the United States. But Americans could face serious water shortages, too especially in areas that rely on groundwater. Groundwater accumulates in aquifers (地下蓄水层),layers of sand and gravel that lie between soil and bedrock. (For every liter of surface water, more than 90 liters are hidden underground.) Although the United States has large aquifers, farmers, ranchers, and cities are tapping many of them for water faster than nature can replenish(补充) it. In northwest Texas, for example, overpumping has shrunk groundwater supplies by 25 percent, according to Postel.

Americans may face even more urgent problems from pollution. Drinking water in the United States is generally safe and meets high standards. Nevertheless, one in five Americans every day unknowingly drinks tap water contaminated with bacteria and chemical wastes, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In Milwaukee, 400,000 people fell ill in 1993 after drinking tap water tainted with cryptosporidium (隐孢子虫),a microbe (微生物) that causes fever, diarrhea (腹泻) and vomiting.

THE SOURCE

Where so contaminants come from? In developing countries, people dump raw (未经处理的) sewage(污水) into the same streams and rivers from which they draw water for drinking and cooking; about 250 million people a year get sick from water borne (饮水传染的) diseases.

In developed countries, manufacturers use 100,000 chemical compounds to make a wide range of products. Toxic chemicals pollute water when released untreated into rivers and lakes. (Certain compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (多氯化联二苯),or PCBs, have been banned in the United States.) But almost everyone contributes to water pollution. People often pour household cleaners, car antifreeze, and paint thinners (稀释剂) down the drain; all of these contain hazardous chemicals. Scientists studying water in the San Francisco Bay reported in 1996 that 70 percent of the pollutants could be traced to household waste.

Farmers have been criticized for overusing herbicides and pesticides, chemicals that kill weeds and insects but insects but that pollute water as well. Farmers also use nitrates, nitrogen--rich fertilizer that helps plants grow but that can wreak havoc (大破坏) on the environment. Nitrates are swept away by surface runoff to lakes and seas. Too many nitrates ―over enrich‖ these bodies of water, encouraging the buildup of algae, or microscopic plants that live on the surface of the water. Algae deprive the water of oxygen that fish need to survive, at times choking off life in an entire body of water.

WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?

Water expert Gleick advocates conservation and local solutions to water--related problems; governments, for instance, would be better off building small--scale dams rather than huge and disruptive projects like the one that ruined the Aral Sea.

―More than 1 billion people worldwide don‘t have access to basic clean drinking water,‖ says Gleick. ―There has to be a strong push on the part of ev eryone—governments and ordinary people—to make sure we have a resource so fundamental to life.‖

Section A

Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center .You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.

Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.

If our society ever needed a reading renaissance(复兴), it‘s now. The National Endowment for the Arts released ―Reading at Risk‖ last year, a study showing that adult reading 47 have dropped 10 percentage points in the past decade, with the steepest drop among those 18 to 24. ―Only one half of young peopl e read a book of any kind in 2002. We set the bar almost on the ground. If you read one short story in a teenager magazine, that would have 48 ,‖ laments a director of research and analysis. He 49 the loss of readers to the booming world of technology, which attracts would-be leisure readers to E—mail, IM chats, and video games and leaves them with no time to cope with a novel.

―These new forms of media undoubtedly have some benefits,‖ says Steven Johnson, author of Everything Bad Is Good for You. Video games 50 problem—solving skills; TV shows promote mental gymnastics by 51 viewers to follow complex story lines. But books offer experience that can‘t be gained from these other sources, from 52 vocabulary to stretching the imagination. ―If they‘re not reading at all,‖ says Johnson, ―that‘s a huge problem.‖

In fact, fewer kids are reading for pleasure. According to data 53 last week from the National Center for Educational Statistic‘s long—term trend assessment, the number of 17-year-olds who reported never or hardly ever reading for fun 54 from 9 percent in 1984 to 19 percent in 2004. At the same time, the 55 of 17-year-olds who read daily dropped from 31 to 22.

This slow but steady retreat from books has not yet taken a toll on reading ability. Scores for the nation‘s youth have56 constant over the past two decades (with an encouraging upswing among 9—year—olds). But given the strong apparent correlation between pleasure reading and reading skills, this means poorly for the future.

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D) .You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center. Passage One Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.

There is a new type of small advertisement becoming increasingly common in newspaper classified columns. It is sometimes placed among ―situations vacant‖, although it does not offer anyone a job, and sometimes it appears among ―situations wanted‖, although it is not placed by someone looking for a job, either. What it does is to offer help in applying for a job.

―Contact us before writing your application‖, or ―Make use of our long experience in preparing your curriculum vitae or job history‖, is how it is usually expressed. The growth and apparent success of such a specialized service is, of course, a reflection on the current high levels of unemployment. It is also an indication of the growing importance of the curriculum vitae (or job history), with the suggestion that it may now qualify as an art form in its own right.

There was a time when job seekers simply wrote letters of application. ―Just put down your name, address, age and whether you have passed any exams‖, was about the average level of advice offered to young people applying for their first jobs when I left school. The letter was really just for openers, it was explained, everything else could and should be saved for the interview. And in those days of full employment the technique worked. The letter proved that you could write and were available for work. Your eager face and intelligent replies did the rest.

Later, as you moved up the ladder, something slightly more sophisticated was called for. The advice then was to put something in the letter which would distinguish you from the rest. It might be the aggressive approach. ―Your search is over. I am the person you are looking for‖, was a widely used trick that occasionally succeeded. Or it might be some special feature specially designed for the job interview. There is no doubt, however, that it is increasing number of applicants with university education at all points in the process of engaging staff that has led to the greater importance of the curriculum vitae.

57. The new type of advertisement which is appearing in newspaper columns .

A) informs job hunters of the opportunities available

B) promises to offer useful advice to those looking for employment

C) divides available jobs into various types

D) informs employers of the people available for work

58. Nowadays a demand for this specialized type of service has been created because .

A) there is a lack of jobs available for artistic people

B) there are so many top level jobs available

C) there are so many people out of work

D) the job history is considered to be a work of art

59. In the past it was expected that first job hunters would .

A) write an initial letter giving their life history

B) pass some exams before applying for a job

C) have no qualifications other than being able to read and write

D) keep any detailed information until they obtained an interview

60. Later, as one went on to apply for more important jobs, one was advised to include in the letter .

A) something that would distinguish one from other applicants

B) hinted information about the personality of the applicant

C) one‘s advantages over others in applying for the job

Passage Two Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.

In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent—controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city.

Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low—paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.

Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if ―other things are equal‖. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.

Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelor's degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. You could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, you could be reading Homer in the original Greek or Dostoyevsky in Russian. If it didn't, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it. The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrate on anything. But Television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instant gratification(满意). It diverts us only to divert, to make the time pass without pain. Television's variety becomes a narcotic(麻醉的), nor a stimulus. Its serial, kaleidoscopic (万花筒般的)exposures force us to follow its lead. The viewer is on a perpetual guided tour: 30 minutes at the museum, 30 at the cathedral, 30 for a drink, then back on the bus to the next attraction—except on television., typically, the spans allotted arc on the order of minutes or seconds, and the chosen delights are more often car crashes and people killing one another. In short, a lot of television usurps(篡夺;侵占) one of the most precious of all human gifts, the ability to focus your attention yourself, rather than just passively surrender it. Capturing your attention—and holding it—is the prime motive of most television programming and enhances its role as a profitable advertising vehicle. Programmers live in constant fear of losing anyone's attention—anyone's. The surest way to avoid doing so is to keep everything brief, not to strain the attention of anyone but instead to provide constant stimulation through variety, novelty, action and movement. Quite

大学英语四级模拟题四 Part One Reading Comprehension (2’×10 = 20’) Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Y ou should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow”from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is really a global problem. Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory(呼吸的)diseases. As found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases. Air pollution can cause both airplane and car accidents because it cuts down visibility(能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be born with serious birth defects. Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals are apt(易于的)to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers. Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes(腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is great. It would be much more worthwhile, both for us and for the government, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control. 1.Air pollution may lead to airplane accidents because . A. it may cause pilots to be ill B. engines may fail from the air-borne dirt C. visibility is reduced D. it brings a lot of black snow 2. Scientists are trying to find a link between pollution and . A. intelligence levels B. birth problems C. man’s behavior D. the nervous system 3. Scientists have not yet determined . A. all of the effects of pollution on the human body B. how pollution can be controlled successfully C. when the atmosphere first became polluted D. how some snow becomes black 4. The author suggests that before air pollution becomes more serious, . A. factories will be forced to stop operating B. buildings should be protected C. the earth will begin to grow colder D. more money should be spent to solve the problem 5. We can conclude that . A. civilization may be ruined if pollution is not controlled B. pollution is more serious in Europe than it is in America C. most people do not know that pollution is a serious problem D. we should learn all the answers before we begin to control pollution Passage Two Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to British Trade Union bosses. The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are disrespectful to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear “sensible shoes” with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month’s conference. The motion states: “Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely in appropriate for the day-to-day working environment. Feet bear the burden of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders. Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints. Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code. More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected.” Nadline Dorries, the Tory Member of Parliament, however criticized the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye,” she said. “If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me. The Trade Union leaders need to get real, stop using obvious sexist tactics by discussing women’s stilettos to divert tension away from Labor chaos.” Michelle Dewberry, a former winner of The Apprentice, said the motion was patronizing(自认为高人一等的). “This is absolutely ridiculous and I think these union officials should be spending their time dealing with more important issues”, she said. “I’m at work in five-inch heels and perfectly able to do my job. Heels are sexy, they boost your confidence and they are empowering to women. I can’t imagine these officials debating a motion about how tightly men should wear their ties. Wearing heels is a personal choice.”
