Unit One Food and Drink Reference for Reading

Fast Food with Global Menu

Discourse Analysis

1. Main Idea

Some of the most successful global businesses on the planet are fast food chains. The reason for their success is that they have accepted the differences of the diets around the world and tailored the restaurants to the cultural tastes of people in different countries.

2. Writing Style

The text centers on the key to the success of some fast food restaurants — tailoring menus to suit different tastes and cultures in different countries. The text structure is explicit and concise. The first two paragraphs directly bring out the topic and reveal to the reader the key to the success of some fast food chains. The body of the text is composed of 8 paragraphs, each paragraph focusing on one specific McDonald’s menu designed for a certain country. In each paragraph, details are given to illustrate the business strategy of tailoring menus for regional differences in different countries. The general-to-specific pattern of the text can light up the abstract idea and make the exposition clear, logic and convincing. The last paragraph concludes with an emphatic and forceful statement to leave the reader a deep impression of the theme. In short, the writer makes his exposition interesting, memorable and convincing.

1. tailor v.
