Passage 1

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

After-sales service and guarantee become an integral and essential part of a “good brand”on both local and regional levels, and the provision of such also produces solid ground for customer loyalty.

Customers today are a lot more demanding than before. Being able to find after-sales service creates a feeling of convenience and a sense of responsibility from the manufacturer. This is very important to build customer loyalty and explains why more 24-hour hotline centers are available nowadays.

Product guarantee is also one of the major factors when a potential customer decides to make a purchase. Whether this be in the form of a written guarantee or a guarantee based on reputation, the importance to the consumer is self-evident. A brand’s research & development, an unavoidable investment, usually back up safety guarantees for marketers nowadays. Product testing and refinement are conducted for both new and existing products. With the help of computerized machinery, quality control has achieved the highest level than ever before to enable consistency in production. For the consumer this means a quality of guarantee for that brand whether it be available at home or abroad.

Passage 2

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

What is the benefit of drinking tea? Well, drinking tea will not only quench thirst, overcome fatigue, but help digestion. Tea leaves, we know, contain some aromatic substances that can dilute fat. It is said that a cup of tea would do good to one who has been stuffed with fat. Tea is known to be rich in various vitamins, notably Vitamin C. It is interesting to know that green tea contains five to six times more Vitamin C than black tea. That is perhaps why there has been an increasing demand for green tea in the world market. Scientific tests in recent years have discovered a new effect in drinking tea, i.e., radiation protection.

The way of drinking tea differs in different countries and regions. In Africa, for example, people often drink tea that is mixed with sugar or mint. Many Europeans add sugar or milk to their tea. In China, too, herdsmen drink tea that is mixed with sheep or cow milk. The Han Chinese, however, prefer to drink what one might call plain tea, with its natural flavor.

Which is better, plain tea or tea that is mixed with sugar or mint or whatsoever? According to a national tea research center expert in HangZhou, plain tea is distinctly better, for the mixing will reduce the medicinal or tonic value of the tea to a certain degree. But old habits die hard. Changing the age-old drinking habits is hardly possible.

There are always two sides to one issue. Overdrinking tea, especially strong tea, may result in stomach disorder. One who is not used to tea is advised against having tea before going to bed; otherwise, he will find it hard to fall asleep.

Finally, it is important to remember that the water for tea br ewing mustn’t be too hot. When it is more than 80 centigrade, the water is likely to destroy the Vitamin C built in the tea leaves. Also one mustn’t take tea and medicine at the same time, for often they are likely to be incompatible with each other.

26. What is NOT the benefit of drinking tea?

A. To quench thirst.

B. To create energy.

C. To protect radiation.

D. To keep fat.

27. There has been an increasing demand for green tea in that _________

28. In China, people of Han nationality often drink tea ________

A. that is mixed with sugar or mint

B. that is mixed with milk or sugar

C. that is mixed with sheep or cow milk

D. that is mixed with nothing

29. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. One can take tea and medicine at the same time.

B. One who is not used to drinking tea had better not have tea before going to bed.

C. One had better brew tea with too hot water.

D. One must drink tea with its natural flavor.

30. The passage implies that _________

A. many people will keep having the mixing tea

B. green tea contains more Vitamin C than black tea

C. plain tea is better than the mixing tea

D. overdrinking tea will make it hard for people to fall asleep

Passage 3

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

When the euro was launched in 1999, C1 was worth US $1.17 or 71 British pence. However, the weakness of the euro-zone economies compared with that of the United States, combined with the inexperience of the European Central Bank in dealing with the international markets, has meant that since its launch the value of the euro has declined significantly. In December 2001, C1 was worth little more than 89 cents or 63 pence, a 20 percent drop on its initial value. This has meant that the countries of the euro-zone have been able to export goods at a cheaper price, but it has not visibly improved their economies as would have been expected. Indeed, in the short term there may be inflationary pressure as shops round up their prices to fit the new currency.

One of the major headaches for participating countries has been the conversion of public telephones and vending machines to accept euro coins. Although a conversion process has been in full swing since before 1999, there are reports that some countries are not ready for the euro. The notes and coins of the 12 national currencies ceased to be legal tender by the last day of February, although most banks would continue to exchange the currency notes for several years.

Those members of the European Union who chose not to join the single currency may well do so in the next few years. Although Denmark voted “no”in a referendum in September 2000, it is thought that the Danish government will hold a second referendum soon. In the United Kingdom, Chancellor of the

Exchequer Gordon Brown has established five economic tests that will determine when the pound may be replaced by the euro, and the government will probably hold a referendum before 2005. And the plans to extend the European Union to Central and Eastern Europe in the next decade will mean countries such as Lithuania, Poland, and Hungary may one day choose to join the euro.

31. Why has the value of the euro declined significantly since its launch?

A. Because of the weakness of the euro-zone economies compared with that of the US.

B. Because of the inexperience of the European Central Bank in dealing with the international markets.

C. Because of the inflation appeared in European countries.

D. Because of the weakness of the euro-zone economies and the inexperience of the European Central Bank in dealing with the international markets.

32. What does the decline of the value of the euro mean?

A. It means the countries of the euro-zone will be able to export goods at a cheap price.

B. It means that in the short term there may be inflationary pressure.

C. It means the European countries will improve their economies soon.

D. It means the European countries will develop greatly.

33. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The euro was launched in 1999.

B. The value of the euro has declined significantly since its launch.

C. A conversion process will be in full swing soon.

D. Some countries are not ready for the coming of euro.

34. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?

A. Future of the euro

B. Change of the euro

C. Launch of the euro

D. Past of the euro

35. Which of the following countries has joined the European Union?

A. Britain.

B. Lithuania.

C. Poland.

D. Hungary.

Passage 4

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comment is made from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never been truer than it is today. The young are better educated. They have a lot more money to spend and enjoy more freedom. They grow up more quickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They think more for themselves and do not accept the ideas of their elders. Events which the older generation remember vividly are nothing more than past history.

The old always assume that they know best for the simple reason that they have been around a bit longer. They don't like to feel that their values are being questioned or threatened. And this is precisely what the young are doing. They are questioning the assumptions of their elders and disturbing

their complacency. Who said that human differences can best be solved through conventional politics or by violent means? Why have the older generation so often used violence to solve their problems? Why are they so unhappy and guilty in their personal lives? Can anything be right with the “rat-race” Haven't the old lost touch with all that is important in life?

Traditionally, the young have turned to their elders for guidance. Today, the situation might be reversed. The old --- if they are prepared to admit it --- could learn a thing or two from their children. One

of the biggest lessons they learn is that enjoyment is not "sinful". It is surely not wrong to live in the present rather than in the past or future.

P art V Guided Writing (15%)

On Birth Control

After two decades of a baby boom, Chinese made it a practice in the early 1970’sthat one family can only have one child. It is quite necessary considering the greater pressure the country feels from the fast increasing number of people.

Yet ever since then, people at home and abroad have voiced different opinions about it. Most people say that we should turn to strict birth control as we are approaching the limit of the number of people the nation can support adequately. But there are others who argue that if birth control were imposed on the population, the future of the Chinese would be seriously endangered. They think that very intelligent people would be more likely to have fewer children, and this would bring about a lowering of the general level of intelligence in the population. This argument, however, does not hold water. For they fail to recognize that in addition to gene, intelligence also depends on an adequate diet, a good education and a decent home environment. And all these are in danger of being denied as our population is increasing faster than the supply of food, available resources and job opportunities.

If we want to improve the quality of our lives; if we want every one to be healthy, wealthy and happy; and if we want to see a prosperous, powerful nation in the world, strict birth control is quite essential.

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow”from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is really a global problem. Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory(呼吸的)diseases. As found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases. Air pollution can cause both airplane and car accidents because it cuts down visibility (能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be born with serious birth defects. Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals are apt(易于的)to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers. Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes(腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is great. It would be much more worthwhile, both for us and for the government, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control. 1. Air pollution may lead to airplane accidents because . A. it may cause pilots to be ill B. engines may fail from the air-borne dirt C. visibility is reduced D. it brings a lot of black snow 2. Scientists are trying to find a link between pollution and . A. intelligence levels B. birth problems C. man’s behavior D. the nervous system 3. Scientists have not yet determined . A. all of the effects of pollution on the human body B. how pollution can be controlled successfully C. when the atmosphere first became polluted D. how some snow becomes black 4. The author suggests that before air pollution becomes more serious, . A. factories will be forced to stop operating B. buildings should be protected C. the earth will begin to grow colder D. more money should be spent to solve the problem 5. We can conclude that . A. civilization may be ruined if pollution is not controlled B. pollution is more serious in Europe than it is in America C. most people do not know that pollution is a serious problem D. we should learn all the answers before we begin to control pollution Passage Two Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to British Trade Union bosses. The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are disrespectful to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear “sensible shoes”with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month’s conference. The motion states: “Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely in appropriate for the day-to-day working environment. Feet bear the burden of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders. Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints. Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code. More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected.” Nadline Dorries, the Tory Member of Parliament, however criticized the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye,”she said. “If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me. The Trade Union leaders need to get real, stop using obvious sexist tactics by discussing women’s

Science is a method o f answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving practical problems. Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships betwee n observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to o rganize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniq ues, and procedures for implementing the finding of science. Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progr ess in each. Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who seek to comp rehend the universe and know the truth within the highest degree of accuracy an d certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people's likes or disli kes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover m ay shock or anger people-as did Darwin's theory of evolution.
