If you are a student, you may be probably required by your teacher to read quickly in class. You have been taught to skim or scan,to look for key words so as to understand the main idea of the article and the important points in the article.Skimming and scanning is a good strategy when you are pressed for time, such as when you are taking an exam, but today, many people skim and scan everything and they have lost the ability to enjoy reading.

In response to this, something called the "slow reading movement" has become popular. The idea is that people should shut off their computers and mobile phones for half an hour or forty-five minutes each day and enjoy the pleasure reading a good book—slowly! In many cities there are even slow reading clubs where members go to a cafe, not discuss books, but to sit quietly with each other, drink coffee and just read.

Researchers have found that reading slowly, especially books of fiction, helps people concentrate, relax and think about what they are reading. It also helps people empathize. This last

point is important. When you read a novel slowly, you get to understand the characters’ emotions and to see the world through their eyes.

Reading,of course, isn't easy. You have to sit still, for one thing. And it can seem boring when compared to the excitement of playing video games. But,for me,reading has been an enduring pleasure in my life. From the age of ten, when I got my first library card,I’ve enjoyed the company of pirates and heroes,of evil criminals and clever detectives,of thousands of interesting people I would have never met in real life.Reading provided me with escape, but it also enabled me to understand the world around me.It was an education in a classroom that had no walls.

In your classroom, you have learned to read “fast”.Outside of the classroom, you should try to learn to read “slowly”.You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

25.When you are having an exam,it's acknowledged that .

A.reading slowly is the best way

B.reading word for word is a good method

C.reading fast is a good strategy

D.reading casually is a wonderful choice

26.Which of the following is NOT one of the characteristics of "slow reading movement"?

A.Enjoying the pleasure of reading a good book slowly.

B.Helping people refresh and relax.

C.Understanding the characters' emotions more accurately.

D.Getting the main idea of the article quickly.

27.What does the underlined word “empathize” (para.3) mean?

A.benefit from something

B.feel sympathy for someboby

C.be interested in something

D.share feelings with someboby

28.Why does the writer call reading “an education in a classroom that had no walls”?

A.Because there is no need to build walls for the books.

B.Because a library card is what you need to enjoy reading in the library.

C.Because reading enables people to better understand the world around them.

D.Because there are thousands of interesting people in the books who can help you escape.

Known as GC-1,the drug reportedly speeds up metabolism(新陈代谢),or burning off,of fat cells.“GC-1 dramatically increases the metabolic rate, essentially transforming white fat, which stores extra calories and is associated with obesity and metabolic disease, into a fat like calorie-b urning brown fat,”sai d Kevin Phillips,a researcher in Houston.

Until several years ago, scientists thought that only animals and human babies have energy-burning,"good" brown fat.“It is now clear,”Phillips said,“that human adults do have brown fat,but appear to lose its calorie-burning activity over time.”White fat has a bad effect on people when the body has too much of it.Some published research shows that people who have more brown fat have a reduced risk of obesity.Researchers are now working on ways to “brown” white fat,or change it into brown fat.

GC-1 works, according to Phillips. He said he and other researchers have tested the drug in hundreds of mice. Obese mice, both genetically obese and those with diet-induced obesity, received GC-1 treatment daily.Genetically obese mice lost weight and more than 50 percent of their fat mass in approximately two weeks,Phillips reported. He said mice with diet-induced obesity experienced similar improvements. The drug also caused adaptive thermogenes(适应性发热)in fat cells from mice.Cells grown in a dish,as well as tissue samples taken from obese mice, showed evidence of white-fat browni ng.“Our data prove that GC-1 is a novel fat-browning agent that may have use in the treatment of obesity and metabolic di sease,”Phill ips said.

The drug has not yet been tested for weight loss in humans. However,Phillips said it wouldn’t be long before it was used as a way of losing weight.

A.It can be used to treat obesity.

B.It is a cure for heart disease.

C.It is a drug intended for mice.

D.It has been sold in the drug store.

35.Which of the following can make people lose weight?

One Sunday,a young couple, who had just fallen in love, was having dinner at an expensive restaurant. The restaurant had a garden-like and elegant environment. The food there was delicious and the service was superb. They had just ordered their dishes when they saw a lady sitting alone, looking at them. They smiled politely, but were a little surprised when the old lady came over to their table. The old lady told the young woman that she looked like her daughter. She said it would make her happy if they said “Goodbye,Mum” when she left the restaurant. How could they refuse?A few minutes later, the old lady stood up to leave. The young couple waved,as she had asked them, and said goodbye as the old lady walked out. When the young couple received their bill, they saw that it included the cost of the old lady’s meal. They called over the manager and asked him what happened.“The bill includes the charge for your mother’s meal,”he explained.“She said you would pay.”

One evening last summer, 11-year-old Owen and his mom put on white suits and taped their rain boots to their pant legs. Then they each grabbed a wooden pole with a large white cloth attached to it and started dragging the tools through the trees and grass in their Wisconsin backyard. They were looking for ticks(扁虱虫). Owen’s mom, Amy Prunuske, teaches microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wausau. She studies diseases that ticks carry. Owen, though, is known as a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people—young or old—who help collect data for research projects. They usually aren’t professional scientists, or if they are, not in the field of the project. Still, their work can be incredibly important. Citizen scientists can help trained scientists gather data from all over the world—even from space. They can provide new ideas and new ways of thinking. Kids often make great citizen scientists because they tend to be curious and good at following precise directions. Sometimes they’re even better at these things than adults. And schools are convenient places for scientists to recruit big groups of helpers. As a bonus, citizen science often gets kids more excited about science. Citizen science takes advantage not just of many sets of eyeballs, but also of many minds. When professional European scientists in Austria were trying to find how best to encourage people to use less energy, they partnered with student citizen scientists. The adult scientists had a long list of questions for people about how much energy they used. Right away, the students noticed some problems the adults hadn’t thought of. There were too many questions, the kids said. And some of those questions were too complicated.
