Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

People have always been fascinated by butterflies so butterflies have found their way into our poems, songs, and art. But many butterfly species are listed as endangered by the U.S. Wildlife Service. Stressing the importance of preserving this valuable insect, people have opened a great many butterfly farms worldwide.

A butterfly farm is a piece of land dedicated to raising various species of these beautiful, delicate insects. On butterfly farms butterflies go through their entire life cycle because the farms provide protective control over climate. Also, the advantages of butterfly farms include a requirement that the butterflies' native forest habitat be preserved.

Up to now butterfly farms have done a lot for protecting the valuable insects. A farmer can collect eggs in a garden and with the help of them more insects can survive. By getting rid of larvae with diseases before others are infected, farmers can reduce the incidence of diseases. In addition, with its scientific information, biologists assess a species' conservation requirements to make sure the next generation of insects can be produced.

Joris, a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica, converted a two-and-a-half acre horse pasture into one of Latin America's first butterfly farms specifically intended to supply butterfly farms. Local people were trained in conservation methods by him. Eventually 15 of these people started their own butterfly farms. He also helped women in the area start a cottage industry for the making of replicas of butterflies to sell to tourists. His efforts paid off. What he did was beneficial to wild butterflies and allowed most of the land to revert to functional rainforest.

Since 476, over 100 butterfly farms have sprung up, mostly in Europe. There are now about 50 butterfly farms in the U.S. and Canada. Owing to many butterfly farms' successful experience in protecting butterflies, it is believed that more and more farms are on the way.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

Companion planting is the idea that some kinds of plants can help each other grow. Plants that are compatible(能共处的) together generally have similar needs in terms of nutrients, soil and moisture levels.

Advice about which plants are compatible is sometimes based more on tradition than proof. But experts say there is evidence to support certain combinations. These can improve harvests, reduce diseases and help with pest control by attracting helpful insects.

For example, some kinds of soil bacteria take nitrogen from the air and make it into a form that plants can use. The plants hold the nitrogen in their roots. Legumes(豆类) are especially good at this nitrogen-fixing. Then any crops that share the space with the legumes can get the nitrogen easily.

Beans and potatoes can also share territory well because their roots reach different levels in the soil. Deep-rooted vegetables get nutrients and moisture from lower down in the soil, so they don't compete with plants with shallower roots. However, some plants placed together may harm

each other's development. For example, tomatoes don't like wet soil but watercress(水田芥) does, so you would probably want to keep them separated.

Some kinds of produce should be kept apart even after being harvested. This is because of ethylene(乙烯) gas. Ethylene can cause some foods to ripen too quickly. Apples release ethylene gas. Melons and tomatoes also release a lot of ethylene. Some vegetables are easily affected by ethylene, including cabbages and cucumbers. This risk of ripening too soon is why markets often separate high ethylene-producing foods from those that are sensitive to the gas.

But if you put an apple in a bag with a green banana, the ethylene from the apple will make the banana ready to eat sooner.

1.Why can some plants be compatible together?(No more than 14 words)

________________________________________________________________________ 2.What are the benefits of companion planting according to experts? (No more than 10 words)

________________________________________________________________________ 3.Why can the crops planted with legumes together get the nitrogen easily? (No more than 12 words)

Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

The world would have been so much better if we all knew to say and do the right thing at the right time. However, that is not the case, especially when it comes to instilling (逐步培养) proper behaviors in kids. Behavior modification(BM) techniques were recently created to help in instilling proper behaviors in children as well as adults.

Behavior modification refers to establishing appropriate behaviors in individuals and discouraging those that are not desirable. The techniques are used in behavior modification therapy that aims to correct and instill appropriate behaviors in children.

The most commonly used behavior modification techniques are positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement and punishment. Positive reinforcement refers to reinforcing a desired behavior through the process of rewarding it. Negative reinforcement behavioral strategies are based on the removal of a negative consequence or a behavior because the desired behavior was performed. Punishment refers to subjecting(使服从于) an individual to a negative condition because of an inappropriate behavior.

The behavior modification techniques for children are mostly based on positive and negative reinforcement. However, parents should realize that these techniques can't be relied upon totally for child behavior modification. This can be done through effective communication and greater focus on the parent-child relationship. As a parent, don't make the reward a monetary one. Try to make it look more like a privilege than a reward.

Although we talk so much about the role of a parent in bringing positive behavior modification in children, both parents and teachers have equally important roles to play. Teachers play their role through preventive classroom management, teaching social problem-solving skills like alternative thinking, and continuous monitoring of a child's behavior. It is true that there are various behavior modification techniques available for encouraging proper behaviors in children. However, there is nothing that can take the place of proper parenting and an affectionate environment.

After squeezing into a small space with two other friends, I had a strong sense of pride to be the mission commander of this space flight. Our objective was very important. Scientists had been arguing about the possibility of existence of life on Mars for decades. Some of them said that the pictures of Mars, taken during various space explorations, had given them sufficient proof that only intelligent being could have made those amazing structures. Others maintained that what looked like a face in the pictures was nothing more than a flash of lights. The arguments continued without conclusion. To prove this once and for all, a decision was made to launch an expedition into space.

My crew and I were the best among our group of trainees. We practised hard together, training hand in hand, and filled with a single aim—flying safely to Mars and back. This feeling was tense and everyone was highly excited, as the day drew nearer. We were anxious to see what Mars was like but the uncertainty held us with fear.

The last moment finally came. The countdown proceeded, and soon we were deep in space, floating about freely and went about preparing the spaceship for the intended landing. Since the trip was scheduled to take about three years, we slept in a special room to prevent ourselves from aging. So I drifted off to sleep peacefully and suddenly I felt someone woke me up. We must have

arrived at Mars and my crew was trying to wake me up.

I opened my eyes slowly and saw a familiar face. ―Why would my English teach er wake me up?‖ I thought. Oh, no. Instead of medals and praise that I should receive, all I had was a severe warning against sleeping in class and then I spent the rest of the lesson standing in a corner.

Cheating on exams is popular in colleges and statistics show that it has risen dramatically during the past score years. Students don't feel ashamed to cheat on exams. Most of them don't care about cheating on exams.

Cheating on exams takes shape in various ways. Some students scribbled notes on small pieces of paper on which they had prepared for the exam, some took out their textbooks or reference books to copy, and still some adopted mobile phones as a way to cheat on exams. For instance, at the University of Nevada, students photographed test questions with their cell phone cameras, then sent them to classmates outside the exam room and got the answers back in text message. However, downloading other people's writing on the Internet for plagiarism(剽窃) was found the easiest way.

Mr. Dapremont said technology had made cheating easier, but added that pressure to succeed sometimes clouded everything and made students do things that they shouldn't do. Students today feel more pressure to do well in order to graduate from school and land jobs.

Whatever the reasons for cheating are, college officials say we must stop it. First, people will not be interested in studying any more with cheating. Second, they think studying isn't meaningful. Third, others may be influenced negatively by people cheating on exams. Thus, we must ban cheating on exams. We should reduce opportunity of cheating on exams.

Most Americans still believe that honesty is an important part of American character. For that reason, there are numerous watchdog committees at all levels of society. Although signs of dishonesty in school, business, and government seem much more numerous in recent years than in the past, could it be that we are getting better at uncovering such dishonesty?

Many educators feel that as students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, they are less likely to cheat.

A man had a little daughter—an only and much-loved child. The girl was very lovely and beautiful. Every day the girl would sing and dance for him. They lived together happily. He was very proud of her. Whenever talking about his daughter, he always thought he was the happiest father in the world. He lived for her—she was his life. So when one day she became seriously ill, he became like a crazy man, moving heaven and earth to bring about her restoration to health.

His best efforts, however, proved unavailing and the child died. He felt his own life was gone with his little daughter. The father became a bitter recluse(隐居者), shutting himself away from his many friends and refusing every activity that might restore his confidence and bring him back to his normal self. But one night he had a dream.

He was in heaven, witnessing a grand pageant of all the little child angels. They were marching in a line passing by the Great White Throne. Every white-robed angelic child carried a candle. He noticed that one child's candle was not lighted. Then he saw that the child with the dark candle was his own little girl. Rushing to her, he seized her in his arms, kissed her tenderly, and then asked, ―How is it, darling, that your candle alone is unlighted?‖ ―Daddy, th ey often relight it, but your tears always put it out.‖

Just then he awoke from his dream. The lesson was clear, and its effects were immediate. From that hour on he was not a recluse, but communicated freely and cheerfully with his former friends and associates. No longer would his darling's candle be extinguished by his useless tears.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

The World Bank, the United Nations and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine did a study to urge hand-washing around the world. They found that one million lives could be saved each year if people washed their hands with soap often. They said that programs to increase hand-washing with soap could be among the most effective ways to reduce infectious disease.

Doctors say, many diseases can be prevented from spreading by hand-washing. These include pinworms (寄生虫), influenza (流行性感冒), the common cold, hepatitis (肝炎) meningitis (脑膜炎) and infectious diarrhea (腹泻).

Hand-washing destroys germs from other people, animals or objects a person has touched. When people get bacteria on their hands, they can infect themselves by touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Then these people can infect other people.

The experts say the easiest way to catch a cold is to touch your nose or eyes after someone nearby has sneezed or coughed. Another way to become sick is to eat food prepared by someone whose hands were not clean.

The experts say that hand-washing is especially important before and after preparing food, before eating and after using the toilet. People should wash their hands after handling animals or animal waste, and after cleaning a baby. The experts say it is also a good idea to wash your hands after handling money and after sneezing or coughing. And it is important to wash your hands often when someone in your home is sick. The experts say the most effective way to wash your hands is to rub them together while using soap and warm water. They say you do not have to use special antibacterial soap. Be sure to rub all areas of the hands for about ten to fifteen seconds. The rubbing action helps remove germs. Then rinse (冲洗) the hands with water and dry them.

The importance of water is well explained through the saying ―Water is life‖. Healthy living starts with proper and safe drinking water. There are two types of drinking water—bottled water and tap water. Bottled water is water kept in bottles and sold in the market for drinking purposes. Tap water, also referred to as running water, is the common household water.

There is a heated discussion as to whether bottled water is safer than tap water for drinking purposes. The level of contamination in tap water varies depending upon the country. To get an understanding about which is better, let's go through the comparison of bottled water and tap water.

The basic issue is the affordability; tap water is much cheaper than bottled water. So for many people, difference in price is the major consideration.

In 499, it was found that the quality of bottled water was the same as tap water. In fact, more than 10 percent of bottled water was tap water kept in bottles. Campaigns were organized in order to make the public aware of the fact, and limit the use of bottled water. The use of bottled water results in several environmental issues. It is a fact that for making one liter of bottled water, more than six liters of water is required, thereby resulting in water wastage. Though, the bottles can be sent for plastic recycling, many are dumped in trash bins. Due to these reasons, environmentalists strongly oppose the use of bottled water.

1.What's the other name of tap water? (No more than 3 words)

________________________________________________________________________ 2.Why do most people like to drink tap water? (No more than 6 words)

________________________________________________________________________ 3.According to the last paragraph, why is tap water strongly recommended? (No more than 13 words)

________________________________________________________________________ 4.What's the best title for the passage? (No more than 6 words)

________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案:

1.Running water.

2.Because of its lower price.

3.Because it's more environmentally friendly with the same quality as bottled water.

4.Bottled water or tap water.

Sometimes we have to wonder where all the good news has gone. Turn on the TV or check the news online and it seems to be one__1__after another.

So when we do get a glimpse of__2__news, it attracts our eyes right now. Like just recently, there was a science article online about__3__and how they prepare delicious meals. I went right for it. That's kind of__5__. But they didn't wait to find out if it was real news first. Instead, they just printed that__6__news story. It's still a nice break. And if the woman actually is 11 years old, I'd like to see a follow-up article on how she did it. Wouldn't it be great if she grew so old from eating ice cream, potato chips and dip?

While it's true that sensationalism (追求轰动效应) __7__stories, we need frequent breaks from all that negative reality. There's another form of reporting that's extremely useful and it's neither positive nor negative. It's warning news. A possible problem is__8__,such as a volcano in Alaska that's expected to erupt. Scientists at the volcano center in Alaska had been monitoring a series of__9__under the volcano. The residents, being warned as a good news report will do, were buying up breathing masks and air filters for their homes. They're__10__food and water in case they need to hunker (蹲下) down in the house for a few days while volcanic ash falls and settles and even the earthquakes follow.

News like that serves a great__11__:giving people time to prepare for a disaster on the way so they have a chance to do whatever is necessary to__12__themselves and their kids.

There is an old saying, "Friends are God's way of taking care of us." But how do you find real friendship and keep it? The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow. First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints and do his or her best to help. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives. But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn't want to talk, you could write a letter. There are three steps to being friends again: Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. Remember that friendship is the most important thing in your life. 16.Sally wants to tell students the ways to ________. A. find friends B. plant trees C. get happy D. keep fit 17.What makes good friends? A. A good friend should be lovely and cool.

学位英语考试练习题(四)

学位英语考试练习题(四) Part I Reading Comprehension A teddy bear is delivered to No. 10 Downing Street after the birth of Prime Minister Tony Blair and wife Cherie’s fourth child. Britain’s baby alert is over-Cherie Blair gave birth to a boy. Mrs. Blair, 45, wife of Prime Minister Tony Blair, had the baby this morning. The baby will be named Leo after the prime minister’s father, his office announced, the baby weighed in at 6 pounds, 12 ounces. Mother, father and the baby boy returned to 10 Downing Street-the prime minister’s official residence-after the birth, a spokesman said. The baby is the couples’ fourth child. “Cherie and the baby are absolutely fine,” Blair said today outside his Downing Street residence. “He is a gorgeous little boy. They are resting right now.” Blair, dressed casually in an open shirt, appeared emotional about the birth, the first of his four children whose birth he has been at from beginning to end. “this is the first time I’ve seen the whole thing though,” he said. “it was quite a struggl e, really, for Cherie.” The switchboard was reportedly lit up with calls from world leaders wishing them well, including a call from Hillary Colliery Clinton. Former prime minister John Major was the first public figure to get through on the phone at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The baby came after a 12-year gap from the Blairs other three children-Euan, 16, Nicky, 14, and Kathryn. He is the first to be born to a serving Buitish prime minister in over 150 years. News of the pregnancy took Cherie and the rest of the nation by surprise when it was announced last year. After decades of much older occupants at No.10 Downing Street, the Blairs’ arrival at the prime minister’s residence with their children and assorted toys in tow was hailed as a breath of fresh air.
