Passage One

Questions 36-40 are based on the following passage.

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations -- the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sound like music and by their association(联想) can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar(粗俗的).

36. We will make our speech silly if we ________.

A) use words carefully

B) use words in a literary style

C) use words without accuracy

D) use words with caution

37. One of the reasons why men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings was that ________.

A) they could express actions and things

B) they could communicate with each other

C) they could agree upon letters

D) they could write and combine them

38. What is TRUE about the words?

A) They are used to express only thoughts and feelings.

B) They are signs.

C) They are simply sounds.

D) They can only be written.

39. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A) The more we read and learn, the more the words that mean something to us.

B) The more we read and learn, the more knowledge we will acquire.

C) The more we read and learn, the more learned we are.

D) The more we read and learn, the more illiterate we become.

40. In expressing their thoughts, great writers are able ________.

A) to move men to tears

B) to be masters

C) to sing

D) to be charming

Passage Two

Questions 41-45 are based on the following passage.

On June 17, 1744, the officials from Maryland and Virginia held a talk with the Indians of Six Nations. The Indians were invited to send boys to William and Mary College. In a letter the next day they refused the offer as follows:

We know that you have a high opinion of the kind of learning taught in your college, and that the costs of living of our young men, while with you, would be very expensive to you. We are convinced that you mean to do us good by your proposal; and we thank you heartily. But you must know that different nations have different ways of looking at things, and you will therefore not be offended if our ideas of this kind of education happen not to be the same as yours. We have had some experience of it. Several of our young people were formerly brought up at the colleges of the northern provinces: they were taught all your sciences; but, when they came back to us, they were bad runners, ignorant of every means of living in the woods ... they were totally good for nothing.

Passage Three

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.

Many people who wished to find a new life sailed across the seven seas to the shores of the United States of America. Though they are from different countries and social classes with various beliefs, they have some common aims. Many come in search of freedom to worship. Some look for food, others for luck. For those who come, the United States of America is still a land of chances.

Some people look for rich soil which they can settle on. Others look for home in big and small cities of this country. They are surprised by the great distances. A person could travel three thousand miles across this country and no one asks him questions. There are no borders to cross. The newcomers are happy with the people whom they meet in their new homeland. But this happiness is not altogether without some troubles and difficulties.

But as the population increases, people come to live closer together. They learn to settle differences, and accept changes. They respect people whose backgrounds are unlike their own. They find it necessary to settle their differences peacefully, under the law of the land. Not everyone was born under the same situations, but everyone has the same right to his own happiness.

The Americans are a proud people. They are proud of their past. They remember the Revolution and the birth of the Republic. They know that to live in a democracy(民主国家) means to suffer many sacrifices(牺牲). The Americans are used to changes. They know how to make the best of a situation, and they are ready for changes.

Their president whom they respect will lead them. The Americans elect their leadership in free elections. If their elected leaders prove untrustworthy, they will not stay in office. The people will not elect them again.

The American people are hard-working and tough. But under that toughness, they are always ready to help their fellow man, near and far.

46. People of different national backgrounds sailed to the United States because it is a land of _________.

A)various beliefs

B)wealth

C)common aims

D)opportunities

47. The newcomers to the United States _________.

A)were impressed by the great size of the country

B)were happy, for people greeted each other in the new homeland

C)were pleased to find no one asked them questions

━━━━━━━━━装━━━━━━━订━━━━━━━线━━━━━━━

D)found there were more troubles and difficulties than happiness

48. The main reason for people to live closer together was that _________.

A)they wanted to settle their differences more easily

B)people from different social classes wanted to learn from each other

C)the population increased

D)they need help from their neighbours

49. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A)Americans take pride in their own country.

B)Americans get used to changes and are prepared for them.

C)Although they come from different backgrounds, Americans are supposed to have the same right.

D)People in a democracy are free from suffering.

50. According to the writer of the passage, Americans _________.

A)do not care much about historical events

B)believe they are able to make the best of a situation through changes

C)can do nothing about their president if he turns out untrustworthy

D)are so hard-working that they are ready to work for men, near and far

Passage Four

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.

There are people in Italy who can’t stand soccer. Not all Canadians love hockey. A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who yawn or even frown when somebody mentions baseball. Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it’s a game better suited to the 19th century, slow, quiet, and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there’s the sport that glorifies “the hit”.

By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent, still.

On TV the game is fractured into a dozen perspectives, replays, close-ups. The geometry of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will contemplate the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won’t do it for you.

Take, for example, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base dugout and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, knees flexed. His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The skeptic still cannot think of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws: the third baseman goes up on his toes, flexes his arms or brings the glove to a point in front of him, takes a step right or left, backward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to check his first baseman’s position. Suppose the pitch is a ball. “Nothing happened,” you say. “I could have had my eyes closed.”

The skeptic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is. Watch the third baseman. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of horsehide on wood. If football is a symphony of movement and theatre, baseball is chamber music, a spacious interlocking of notes, chores and responses.

51.The passage is mainly concerned with_____________.

A) the different tastes of people for sports

B) the different characteristics of sports

C) the attraction of football

D) the attraction of baseball

52. Those who don’t like baseball may complain that_______________.

A) it is only to the taste of the old

B) it involves fewer players than football

C) it is not exciting enough

D) it is pretentious and looks funny

53. The author admits that____________.

A) baseball is too peaceful for the young

B) baseball may seem boring when watched on TV

C) football is more attracting than baseball

D) baseball is more interesting than football

54. By stating “I could have had my eyes closed” the author means (4th paragraph last sentence)_____________.

A) the third baseman would rather sleep than play the game

B) even if the third baseman closed his eyes a moment ago, it could make no difference to the result

C) the third baseman is so good at baseball that he could finish the game with eyes closed all the time and do his work well

大学英语阅读测试一(1) Part I??Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington, D.C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Louver; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings. FIU has opened what it says is the first co mputer art museum in the United States. You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You can call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings. Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he starts the museum because computer artists had no place to show their works. A computer artist can only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others to see on their computers. He can also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needs an expensive laser printer. Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr Shostak said the FIU museum would make computer art funnier for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum. 1. The main purpose of this passage is to give information about _______. A) museums throughout the world B) an electronic art museum in Miami, U.S. C) art exhibitions in Florida International University D) latest development of computer art 2. To see the art in FIU museum, you need _____. A) floppy discs B) a computer and a printer C) pictures and drawings on paper D) a computer connected to the museum by telephone line 3. _____ are stored in this museum. A) Paintings drawn by means of computer B) Different styles of paintings C) Old paintings D) Drawings done by art students of FIU 4. The museum was started when _____. A) Robert Shostak wanted to do something for computer scientists B) Robert Shostak wanted to help computer artists C) art students needed a place to show their works D) computer scientists wanted to do something about art 5.
