Vincent Van Gogh(凡·高),for whom colour was the main symbol of expression, was born in GrootZundert,Holland in 1853.He was brought up in a cultured family.Vincent was highly emotional and wasn’t self-confident.Between 1860 and 1880,when he finally decided to become an artist,Van Gogh had two unhappy love stories and worked

unsuccessfully in Belgium. He remained there to study art,and decided to give happiness by creating beauty.Of the works of his early Dutch period, the most famous is The Potato Eaters.

In 1886 he went to Paris to join his brother Théo,the manager of Goupil’s gallery. In Paris,Van Gogh studied with Cormon, later met Pissarro,Monet, and

Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette(调色板).His nervousness made him a difficult person to get along with and night-long discussions and painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help set up a school of art.Gauguin did join him but with bad results.Near the end of 1888,Van Gogh ran after Gauguin with an open razor(剃须

刀),which was stopped by him,but ended up cutting a part of his own ear off.It led Gauguin to finally leave Arles.

In the May of 1890,Van Gogh seemed much better and went to live in Auvers-sur-Oise under the eye of Dr Gachet. Two months later he was dead, having shot himself

“for the good of all”.During his life he had sold one painting.Van Gogh’s finest works were produced in less than three years.

Suppose someone asks you to paint a picture.“All right,”you think.“No problem.I can fill the paper pretty easily.”But what if the picture you are asked to paint is three stories high, two city blocks long, and one block wide?In other words,a total of 17,000 square feet! Most people would be overwhelmed by the request(请求).But not Diego Rivera.

Diego Rivera(1886~1957) was one of modern Mexico’s most famous painters. When he was asked to paint this huge picture,he knew he could do it.During his life,Rivera painted 124 frescos that showed Mexican life, history, and social problems.A fresco is a painting on wet plaster(灰泥).

Rivera had to plan ahead and drew simply about what he planned to paint. Then Rivera’s assistants would put all but the final layer (层) of plaster on the

wall.Next, they used sharp tools to dig the outline (轮廓) of Rivera’s quickly-made drawing into the plaster. Then, they made a mixture of lime (石灰) and sand and spread this over the outline in a thin layer. As soon as this layer was firm—but not dry—Rivera began to paint.Every morning, his paints had to be freshly mixed.Rivera would paint as long as there was daylight. He refused to paint under man-made light since it would change how the colors looked.

Sometimes,Rivera would say that what he had painted that day was not good enough. Then he would insist that all the plaster be cut off so he could start

again! It took Rivera years to finish, but this fresco is thought to be one of the greatest in the world. The man himself is considered to be the greatest Mexican artist of the twentieth century.

25.What would most people think about the request of painting the huge picture?

A.It is possible.

B.It is pretty easy.

C.It is interesting.

D.It is too difficult.

A.how Rivera mixed different paints

B.how Rivera chose his assistants

C.how Rivera did his painting

D.how Rivera became famous

答案:C

B.He liked using light in his paintings.

C.He preferred quickly-made drawings.

D.He was good at making full use of his time.

答案:A

Mary Cassatt is one of the first great women American painters. At first her

father did not want her to become an artist. But she followed her dream and became an artist. She was born on May 22,1844,and lived in Europe for several years as a child.

Her family returned to the United States and,at age 16,Mary attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art s.Four years later she decided she couldn’t learn anything fresh and practical in Philadelphia,so she returned to Europe. There she studied the skills of the masters in Rome,Seville,Antwerp, and Paris.

Mary received the chance of a lifetime at the age of 33 when the famous French painter,Edgar Degas, asked her to join a group of painters that included now-famous artists like Manet and Renoir.Their style of painting is called Impressionism. They used primary colours and short brush strokes in their works. They re cognised Mary’s spirit and powerful talent and invited her to exhibit in the Impressionist art shows.

Mary painted what she saw:gardens and paintings of persons, especially mothers and children involved in everyday living. One of her paintings,Young Mother and Two Children, was given to the White House in 1954 where it hangs today.

Mary never married and,in 1877,her parents and sister moved to Europe to join her.Mary devoted much of her time to them for the next 18 years.Mary painted until 1914 when her failing eyesight made it impossible to continue. She spent the later years of her life in Paris. She died in 1926 at the age of 82.Unfortunately,all her life, she refused to accept students.

Cleanliness is important to academic success at one Chinese university where compulsory labor is part of a program designed to award class credits while teaching students with proper moral values. During winter, the sky is still dark at 6:30 a.m. when the first-year students in Trade and Management College in Zhengzhou begin sweeping the 165-acre campus and it can take up to an hour. Mr. Sun, the university official, said labor is good for building character and promotes “the spirit of hard work.”Some students also claim that they are always proud of the clean campus. They never litter because they've been through the labor and understand that they should respect the fruits of labor of others. Some students, however, are against it because they feel the demands of the cleaning program are a distraction. Some often show up late and hungry to their morning classes after rushing to sweep the campus and clean their rooms. One university in Zhengzhou designs a program where students must clean the campus every day and relates it to class credits. Some people support the program while others do not.(30) Generally, I am in favor of the practice. To begin with, through their effort, students provide a clean and comfortable environment, which, as a result, is an assurance of their successful academic life. Moreover, cleaning and labor can not only serve to build students' character but also contribute positively to students developing healthy routines and good sanitation habits. Last but not least, by enjoying the fruits of others' labor, students will develop the awareness of gratitude and regard labor as a matter of honor. In short, carrying out the cleaning program is crucial. The significance for students of participating in it means more than academic success. It is part of moral education and benefits students as well as the campus. It is required by one university in Zhengzhou that students should clean the campus every morning to achieve class credits. Opinions on the practice vary widely from person to person.(30) I am strongly opposed to the practice for the following reasons. First of all, cleaning tends to take up too much time, which becomes a distraction for students and discourages them from focusing on their academic performances. Then, students can be encouraged to maintain clean living areas but it's unreasonable to relate the cleaning with the academic credits. As students, they should put more efforts into their studies to achieve class credits instead of sweeping the campus. Furthermore, though someone claims labor can contribute to developing the spirit of hard work, it should by no means be achieved through daily floor-sweeping. In conclusion, there is no sense in students sweeping the campus, for it benefits neither their character nor study.(120)
