Most people know that Marie Curie(居里夫人) was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was

also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1987, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied

in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris. Irene entered the University

of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War

I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities(设备) to

help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized

in the form of a Military’s Medal by the French government.

In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.

Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(辐射能). Irene

Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

21.Why was Irene Curie awarded a Military Medal?

A. Because she received a degree in mathematics.

B. Because she contributed to saving the wounded.

C. Because she won the Nobel Prize with Frederic.

D. Because she worked as a helper to her mother.

22.Where did Irene Curie meet her husband Frederic Joliot?

A. At the Curie Institute.

B. At the university of Paris.

C. At a military hospital.

D. At the College of Sevigne.

23.When was the second child of Irene Curie and Frederic Joliot born?

A. In 1926.

B. In 1927.

C. In 1897.

D. .In 1932.

24.In which of the following aspects was Irene Curie different from her mother?

A. Irene worked with radioactivity.

B. Irene combined family and career.

C. Irene won the Nobel Prize once

D. Irene died from leukemia.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as even when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试) increase the length of time we will remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表) are an exception(例外) to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.

25. What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

A. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.

B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.

C. People remember well what they learned in childhood.

D. Stories for children are easy to remember.

26. The author explains the law of overlearning by_________.

A. presenting research findings

B. setting down general rules

C. making a comparison

D. using examples

27. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is_______.

A. a result of overlearning

B. a special case of cramming

C. a skill to deal with math problems

D. a basic step towards advanced studies

28. What is the author's opinion on cramming?

A. It leads to failure in college exams.

B. It's helpful only in a limited way.

C. It's possible to result in poor memory.

D. It increases students' learning interest.

C

When she moved the covering cloth to look upon his tiny face, she was shocked. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.

Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. When he rushed home from school one day and threw himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be full of heart- breaks for his imperfect appearance.

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune and popular with his fellow students. He might have been class monitor, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music.

Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, “Y ou’re going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret.” The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person turned up. His talents blossomed into genius, and his school and college became a series of success. Later he married and entered the diplomatic service.

One day ,he urged his father, “Who gave so much for me?I must know! I could never do enough for him.”“I do not believe you could, ” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know... not yet.”

The years kept their secret, but the day did come--- one of the darkest days that a son must endure. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket (棺材). Slowly, tenderly, the father reached out a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to show that the mother had no outer ears.

“Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut, ” he whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?”

Real be auty lies not in the physical appearance, but in the heart. Real treasure lies not in what can be seen, but in what cannot be seen. Real love lies not in what is done and known, but in what is done and not known.

29.The mother was shocked at the first sight of her baby because .

A. her baby was born without hair

B. her baby had a tiny face

C. her baby was bor n imperfect

D. the doctor turned to look out of the window 30.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

B. The son didn't know the truth until his mother died.

C. With donated ears, the son’s life developed smoothly.

D. The boy couldn't hear clearly without ears at first.

31.Why did the boy's mother never have her hair cut?

A. Because her hair added to her beauty.

B. Because her hair helped to keep a secret.

C. Because her long hair was her pride.

D. Because she l iked her thick and brown hair.

32.Which is the best title for the passage?

A. A Misfortunate Boy

B. Mother’s Hair

C. Mother’s Secret Love

D. A Successful Ear Operation

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don't always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.

No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don't get along well, which doesn't mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away, then we feel very sad. We miss them much, but we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again, and we can make

new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.

There's more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people if those don't have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares, if someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

33. The first paragraph tells us __________.

A. none needs friends

B. making friends is the need in people's life

C. we always need friends around us

D. we need to be alone

34. Which of the following is the most probable place people name after friendly people?

A. A house.

B. A room.

C. A library.

D. A village.

35. If people have friends, they would live longer, because __________.

A. they feel happier and healthier

B. they get a lot of help from their friends

C. they take better care of themselves

D. both A and C

Dear Mary,

How time flies! I hav e been in high school for two months. Now I’m writing to tell you something about it.

I felt a little lonely at the beginning ,which made me miss all the teachers and classmates in Junior High school. But now, I have got used to my new school life.
