Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and is commonly known as the Red Planets. The rocks, soil and sky of it are a little red or pink. Its name was given by the Romans in honor of their god of war.

People on the earth need oxygen to breathe. There is almost no oxygen on Mars. Living on Mars would be like living on a very high mountain. There would be little air. It might be 50 degrees above zero at noon and 100 degrees below zero at night. We know that Mars has carbon. Through a telescope, Mars looks red. In some places, it seems gray. At times the gray turns gray-green, then brown, then gray again. The gray-green may be a kind of plant color which changes with the seasons.

Life is expected on Mars by scientists, because there are distinct seasons on the planet’s surface. This condition might support plants. However, some researches find if Mars had life, it must have been a long time ago. For Mars’first 600 millions years, it had plenty of water and proper temperatures for life. But now the planet’s environment has changed. Mars is not a pleasant place for any form of life.

into smaller boxes on wheels(轮子). All these small boxes run around and around, and finally stop to rest. You leave these boxes on wheels and go to very large tall boxes.

After resting all day you get back in your little boxes and return to your big boxes. There you sit and look at every small glowing(闪闪发光的) boxes with moving pictures on the front.

There is only one thing I don’t understand. I went to a football game one day.

A group of angry boys fought a little round ball. Everyone shouted but they kept fighting. They were angry, because they had been kept in boxes all day. I think.

Thanks you earthmen for this chance to get to know you.

(J)Some new Japanese robots could hit balls, draw pictures and breathe. Even so, the robots on display at the World Expo(博览会) on Thursday were test models and still need some work.

Their developers say all the robots need improving, because it will still be years before robots can help the sick and save people in danger.

The Batting Robot has a fast vision system(视觉系统). It can deal with 1,000 pictures a second, more than 30 times the human eye. At the expo, however, it was using a plastic bat to hit rubber balls.

Cooper was drawing the faces of visitors on large cookies with a pen. It has a program that translates pictures from a digital camera into line-drawing instructions.

As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as success.

Spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. The damage(危害) done by radiation won’t be discovered until their children or even grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but there is no really helpful medicine.

Space junk(垃圾) is also thought a great danger to spacemen. It’s reported that there are 9,000 man-made

things flying in space. About 30% of these are satellites, 10% are spaceships, and the rest are space junk. An explosion(爆炸) in 1996 made a cloud of 300,000 fragments, each at least 4mm in size, and even a small piece of these knocked against a spaceship window and did some damage. Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working on helpful ways to do with space junk.

Although space is really dangerous, it interests everyone on Earth. In the near future, it may become usual for people to spend a few days in a space hotel.
