Computer users are being warned by industry experts to pay attention to secret codes, which could be used to record their conversations.

E-mails, screensavers, and electronic greeting cards can carry a secret code which is able to turn on the computer's microphone, make a recording, and forward it to someone else without the user's knowledge.

In fact any attachments sent to a computer, whether it is a game of Space Invaders, or a moving picture, can possibly be used to spy.

Experts say people should always think twice about opening attachments

because —although not common —bugging by computer can, and has been done.

Bill Lyons, head of the Internet Security Company Finjan, said, "People in the army have tested this and you can be sure, if people in general are aware of it, then computer hackers are aware of it. The frightening thing is that there are tools on the Internet which people, using a simple search method, can find, and which will enable them to attach this dangerous code to simple attachments."

A.Use secret codes to record other people's conversations.

B.Be careful when opening an attachment.

C.Never open any attachments.

D.Attach some codes to your e-mails.

My grandfather worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some crates (木箱) for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage (孤儿院) in Brazil. On his way home, he found his glasses were gone. When he mentally replayed his earlier actions, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket and fallen into one of the crates. His new glasses were heading for Brazil !

The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.

"It's not fair," he thought as he walked home angrily. "I've been very faithful in giving of my time and money to my work, and now this. "

Several months later, the director of the orphanage came to the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to my grandfather's small church in Chicago.

He began by thanking the people for their kindness in supporting the orphanage. "But most of all, he said, "I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year. You see, some people had just come to the orphanage, destroying everything, including my glasses. I was desperate. Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were very worried about this. Then your crates arrived. When I removed the covers, I found a pair of glasses lying on top.”

He paused long enough to let his words sink in. Then, he continued:” When I tried on the glasses, it was as though they had been made just for me! I want to thank

you for being a part of that!"

The people listened, happy for the miraculous glasses. But they thought it was strange because there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.

Sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, my grandfather, an ordinary carpenter realized his glasses had found a good place to go.

64.We know from the text that .

A.the author's grandfather got his glasses back from the director of the orphanage

C.the author's grandfather's burden of supporting his family was very heavy

D.the author's grandfather worked as a carpenter in a school in Chicago 65.From the text we can infer that the author's grandfather was very

after hearing what the director of the orphanage had said.

A.surprised B.disappointed C.pitiful D.proud 66.The underlined word "miraculous" (Paragraph 7) can be replaced by .A.practical B.wonderful C.necessary D.important 67.What would be the best title for the text?

A.The Perfect Mistake B.An Ordinary Carpenter

C.A Careless Old Man D.An unusual experience

D

In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a "gap year," a year off between high school and college. This idea never gained a big following in America. Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing, though there are no official numbers.

Charles Deacon, Dean of Admissions at Georgetown University, estimates that in the current first-year class of 1600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off. He says this number hasn’t changed much over the years.

Mr. Deacon says the most common reason for taking a "gap year" is to have a chance to travel, but he says international students may take a "gap year" to meet requirements at home for military duty.

Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education, but it can also give students a chance to explore their interests. Students hoping to be doctors, for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering in a hospital.

Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy.

The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its Web site called "Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation". It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experiences outside the pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time.

Of course, a "gap year" is not for everyone. Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college, and parents might worry that their children will decide

not to go to college once they take time off. Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly.

Holly Bull's job is to specialize in helping students plan their "gap year". She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability of information on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off, and she points out that many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.

68.What is the passage mainly about?

A.More and more American students are choosing to take a year off

B.If you want to go to an American university, take a "gap year" first

C.It is likely that taking a "gap year" is becoming popular in America

D.Americans hold different opinions towards stu dents’ taking a "gap year" 69.How many reasons for students' taking a "gap year" are mentioned in the passage?

A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.

70.The essay "Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation" suggests that A.every student must take a "gap year" before applying for a famous university B.some famous universities encourage students to gain more life experiences C.taking a "gap year" can make students free from life learning

D.the stress of studies does ha rm to the students’ health

71.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Books and media have contributed to the students' interest in school learning

B.Charles Deacon doesn’t support the idea of the students' taking a "gap year"

C.Parents might disagree with the program, concerned about their children' s future

D.Experts agree taking a year off will benefit the students emotionally and physically

Making an advertisement for television often costs more than a movie. For example, a two-hour movie costs $ 6 million to make. A TV commercial can cost more than $ 6 000 a second. And that does not include the cost of paying for air time. Which is more valuable, the program or the ad? In terms of money—and making money is what television is all about— the commercial is by far the more important.

Research, market testing, talent, time and money—all come together to make us want to buy a product. No matter how bad we think a commercial is, it works. The amount of sales went up once the ads began. TV commercials actually buy their way into our head. We, in turn, buy the product.

And the ads work because so much time and attention are given to them. Here are some rules of commercial ad making. If you want to get the low middle-class buyer, make sure the announcer has a tough, manly voice. Put some people in the ad who work with their hands. If you want to sell to upper-class audience, make sure that the house, the furniture, and the hair style are the types that the group identifies (认同) with. If you want the buyer feel superior(有优越感) to the character selling the

product, then make that person so stupid or silly that everyone will feel great about himself or herself.

We laugh at commercials. We don't think we pay that much attention to them. But evidence shows we are kidding ourselves. The making of a commercial that costs so much money is not kid stuff. It's a big, big business. And it's telling us what to think, what we need, and what to buy. To put simply, the TV commercial is a form of brainwashing.

72.TV commercials are more important than other programs to television because

A.they bring in great profits

B.they require a lot of money to make

C.they are not difficult to produce

D.they attract more viewers than other programs

73.From the rules set for making commercial ads, we can conclude that______.

A.the lower-middle-class buyer likes to work with his hand

B.the more stupid the characters, the more buyers of the product

C.ad designers should let the upper-classes feel superior

D.ad designers attract different people with different skills

74.The purpose of all the efforts made in turning out TV commercials is ____.

A.to persuade people to buy the product

B.to show how valuable the product is

C.to test the market value of the product

D.to entertain the audience

75.What does the author actually mean in the last paragraph?

A.He asks TV viewers never to laugh at the TV commercial ads.

B.Commercials are used to show the true value of a product to be sold.

C.TV commercials cost much and they do influence us in one way or another.

D.Brainwashing must be introduced to sell something on TV.

A In his new show,Evan Ruggiero plays guitar, sings pop standards and shows everybody his fine footwork. What makes all of these especially unusual is that Ruggiero, 24, has only one leg. When he was a 19-year-old musical theater student at New Jersey’s Montclair State University, Ruggiero had a rare bone cancer in his right leg. Finally his leg would have to be amputated (截) below the knee. Such a setback could have easily ended the career of a less tough person, but Ruggiero, who has been dancing since he was five, now puts the experience into his performance. His show, “The One-Legged Song and Dance Man: Volume 3”,explains how he returned to dance just 18 months after the amputation. His dance now relies on the use of a peg leg(假肢) ,he explains. The secret to his surprising success, he says, was being a “stubborn”patient who refused to give up on his dance and performing studies, despite the advice of his doctor. “It was a real setback, but after it was all over,I said, ‘You know what? I need to pick up right where I left off and continue my career, ’”Ruggiero said. Ruggiero has come to view his peg leg as an instrument. “Tap dancers—they’re always calling themselves musicians, and their feet are their instrument, ” he said. Noting that many audience members will never have seen a one-legged dancer
