在美国购物时需要学会10句对话
初到美国的人外出购物遇到的一些会话，像有些很简单的句子， 如 Charge or debit？ 常使得刚来美国的人觉得十分地困扰， 不知道这句话到底在问什么东西， 当然更别说要正确地回答了！ 下面的内容希望对大家有所帮助。
1、Charge or debit？ (Credit or debit？)
使用信用卡或是电子钱包？
Charge (Credit) 指的就是一般我们说的信用卡， 信用卡使用上很方便， 但若是没有收入又没有社会安全卡， 是很难申请到信用卡的。 而我们的提款卡 (ATM 卡) 就是 debit， 它会从你的支票户头直接扣钱。 一般而言， 只要去有刷卡的地方都会被问这一句， 刚来美国的人常常对这句话感到莫名奇妙， 不知道这句话到底在问什么， 其实只要了解什么是 charge 什么是 debit， 这句话就不难了解， 视你是使用信用卡还是 ATM 卡而回答。 使用信用卡就说 charge， 使用 ATM 卡就答 debit。
2、Cash back？
是否要找回现金？
在美国跨行提款的手续费是 $1.5， 够吓人的吧？ 可是偏偏美国那么大，你要找到跟发卡银行同一家银行的提款机谈何容易？ 那这是不是意谓著每次去提领现金都要负担高额的手续费？
其实只要你善用 cash back 这个功能， 那情况就完全不一样了， cash back 就是说假设你买 10 块的东西， 但刷卡时你可以刷 30 元， 剩下的 20元他会拿现金 20 块找你， 如此出门就不必带著大笔的现金， 又不必负担高额的提款手续费。 唯一缺点是有金额限制， 有些店最多可 cash back $50， 有些店只能 cash back $20。 一般的情形是只有 ATM 卡才能 cash back 的， 一般的信用卡是不行的， 但是有些特别的信用卡， 如 Discover， 也有提供 cash back 的功能。 他的优点在于不受发卡银行提款机的限制， 我在亚特兰大拿的 ATM 卡到波士顿一样可以 cash back， 而且完全不收手续费， 请大家多加利用。
3、How are you going to pay？
你要怎么付款？
不住在美国的人， 或是刚来美国的人听到这句话一定觉得丈二金刚摸不著头脑。 其实这句话跟 Charge or debit 这句话很像， 问的就是你要用什么方式付款如信用卡(credit card) 提款卡 (debit card) 或是现金 (cash) 来付帐。 这句话在"电子情书"这部电影中曾出现过， 在男主角去女主角的书店买东西时， 店员就问男主角这句， 汤姆汉克就答: cash。 就是付现的意思了。
4、Double coupon
双重折价卷。
我想只要在美国待过一阵子的人， 都知道利用 coupon 来省钱的道理吧！ 所谓的 coupon， 就是由制造商所发行的一种折价卷， 如 Save 50c 的 coupon (折价卷)可以让你在结帐时少付 50c， 然后再由这些商店拿著这些 coupon 去跟制造商换钱。
那什么是 double coupon 呢？ 就是在美国有一家很有名叫 Kroger 的 grocery store。 为了促销， 所推行的一种政策。 他们宣称拿著 50c 的 coupon 去他们的店里买东西， 就可以折价 1 元， 折价的金额足足多了一倍。 多馀的这 50c 是 Kroger 给顾客的优惠。 但是也有一些限制， 例如，每张 coupon 的面额不得超过 75c， 而且对同样一个商品， double coupon 只能使用一次。
5、Bring your receipt to the customer service， and they will refund you.
把你的收据拿给顾客服务部， 他们就会退钱给你。
美国是个很重视消费者权益的国家， 所以几乎每个商家， 都一定会有一个专门的 customer service 柜台。 有任何的问题去找他们， 他们多半会给你满意的答覆。 我是觉得去超市买东西， 他们算错钱的比例蛮高的， 只要发现收据上有任何问题， 就可以拿著收据去 customer service 要求退钱 (refund)。
6、I want to take the raincheck for the eggs
我要拿一张鸡蛋的 raincheck。
有时候某样商品大特价， 该样商品很快地就被抢购一空了。 这样的情形如果是在台湾， 商家一定会说， 卖完了就卖完了， 我也没办法。 可是美国的制度很有意思， 这样特价品卖完了没关系， 你可以去跟他们领一张 raincheck。 等到过一段时间后 (也许等到该样商品特价结束了) 你还是可以用特价时的价钱去购买该样商品。 这样的制度真的让人觉得很贴心。
所谓的 raincheck 指的是球赛若因雨而延赛， 则球迷可以把入场卷换成 raincheck， 先保留这张票的权利， 以便日后可以补看球赛。
7、 I am sorry you are on the Cash Only Lane
我很抱歉你现在是在只收现金的结帐道上。
Cash Only 故名思义就是只收现金， 其它的什么信用卡，支票都一律不收。通常是商家为了增快结帐的速度所以才会设 Cash Only Lane。可是刚来美国时，标示都没注意在看，要是走
到这一个 lane， 身上的现金又偏偏不够时， 那麻烦就大了， 你就必须花 $1。5 的提款手续费去领 $20 来给他， 真是气人。
此外还有很多不同的 lane，例如 Express Lane，可能是只受理少于十样商品的顾客，总之，要结帐前先看清标示就不会吃大亏。
8、The price will go down。
这价钱将会降低。
个人经验 go down 跟 go up 很好用， 当你不知道用什么动词， 如 increase 或 surge， 就用 goes up， 像是有一次我去买汽车保险， 我一直想问他如果我一年当中都没有理赔， 那明年的保费会不会降低？ 这个降低我就一直想不起来要用 decrease 好还是 lower 好， 结果后来我才听他说， "The price will go down。" 是不是听来很顺。 再说一个例子， 比如作实验时浓度上升， 这个上升你可以说 increase， 但也可以说， "The concentration goes up。" 听来是不是也不错？
另外类似的口语讲法， 你可以用 rise 跟 drop 来代表 go up 和 go down。 例如 "The price will drop。"
9、We have a clearance sale today。
我们今天清仓大拍卖。
Clearance sale 算是固定的用法， 就是所谓的清仓大拍卖， 可惜我在美国还没听过 "跳楼大拍卖" 的讲法， 不然一定也很有趣。 另外， 我们去店里如果要找这些拍卖的商品， 我们可以问店员说， "Where can I find the clearance items？" 所谓的 clearance item 就是清仓货， 零码货的意思， 或是 odd sizes 也代表零码货的意思。
10、Can you give me the invoice？
能不能给我一张发票？
常听到有人在问发票这个字的英文怎么讲？ 就是 invoice 这个字啦！ 只可惜在美国买东西一般都只给收据 receipt。 害我们少了很多对发票中大奖的乐趣 (人真的是为了希望而活！！) 只有在买大件的东西， 如汽车保险时， 他们才会给你所谓的发票 (invoice).

1. I'm just browsing. 我只是随便看看。
在美国逛街买衣服，"I'm just browsing." 和 "I'm just looking." 这两句一定要先学会。因为一般当你走进一家店时，小姐们通常都会走过来亲切地和你打招呼，问你 "May I help you?" (需要帮忙吗？) 或是 "Are you looking for something?" (你想找什么衣服吗？) 如果你只是想随便看一看，不妨客气地跟她说声，"I'm just browsing." 或是 "I'm just looking." 这样子她们就不会继续纠缠下去，会让你在店里随便逛。像我家人来探望我时，我都先交代他们要学会这两句，因为我不希望美国人觉得我们东方人很不礼貌，别人好心问你，你却装作一副没听到的样子。 (其实是英语不好，不敢开口。)
但如果你是真的要找某一件特定的商品，比方说你想找一件高领的毛衣，你就可以说，"I'm looking for a turtle neck sweater. Could you help me?" (我在找一件高领的毛衣能帮我一下吗？) 或是 "Do you have any turtle neck sweater?" (你们有卖高领的毛衣吗？)
2. May I try this on? 我能试穿这一件吗？
在美国大部分卖衣服的地方都是允许试穿的，所以通常要是我看上了某件衣服，我通常就直接拿去试穿了，不会再画蛇添足地问说，"May I try this on?" 要是不知道试衣间在哪里的话，则可以问店员，"Where is the fitting room?" (试衣间在哪里？) 。但是如果是不太确定能不能试穿的话，特别像是在大拍卖的时候，或是有些男生的衬衫是摺好用别针固定的，则这时候最好还是问店员一声，"May I try this on?" 免得作出一些愚蠢的事。
有时候在试衣间前面会坐著一个晚娘面孔的女人，在你进去之前她会挡住你的去路，问你，"How many?" 这时你就要告诉她你拿了几件衣服，例如三件的话你就说，"Three. " 这时她会给你一块上面写著 3 的狗牌，在你进去之前要把这个牌子挂上你的门
上，表示你进去的时候是三件，出来的时候也要是三件才行。
3. I like this tank top. It goes with my baggy jeans. 我喜欢这件背心，它跟我的布袋牛仔裤很合。
人家都说美国人比欧洲人和日本人不重视穿着，据我的观察也是如此，美国女生的标准穿着通常是一件 T-shirt 或是露出肚脐的小可爱背心 (tank top)，再配上一件牛仔裤 (jeans)。男生的话也差不多，只差不会把肚脐露出来而已。
上面提到这个 tank top，就是中文里所讲的背心，也就是那种无袖的上衣。有一种男生穿的纯白的背心，看起来像内衣一样的 tank top，老美把这种 tank top 戏称为 wife-beater。因为他们觉得会穿这种背心的人通常有结实的肌肉而且手臂上会有刺青。这给人的感觉就是回家之后喜欢打老婆，所以这种 white tank top 就被腻称为 wife-beater。
baggy 这个字是宽松的意思，有一种男生穿的宽宽松松的短裤就叫 baggy pants。而 baggy jeans 则是指「布袋」牛仔裤。其它正常一点的牛仔裤的样式还有有诸如直筒裤 (straight jeans)、靴型裤 (boot cut jeans) 等等 。这些名词各位不必特别去记它，因为一般卖牛仔裤的柜子旁都有贴示意图，只要在买裤子时会按图索骥即可。
4. Could you help me pick up a dressy dress? 你能不能帮我挑一件美美的礼服？
上面所讲的美国人不太重视穿着是指平常的时候，但在正式的场合给她们一打扮起来，我只能说，"I am astonished!" (太震惊了！) 她们几乎每个人都有一套所谓的 dress，就是那种正式的礼服，配上西方女生特有的傲人双峰，再加上高跟鞋一穿，浓妆一抹，让每个女生看起来都像是好莱坞里的女明星，让我觉得有些自惭形秽。所以我说美国的女生穿着不是很阳光很健康，就是很正式很性感，很少看到介于两个极端之间的穿着。 相对的东方的女生打扮就比较典雅精致,但平常的时候跟正式的场合就感觉不出有很大的差别。
所以 dress 一般指的是女生正式的服装，特别是那种低胸 (low cut) 连身带裙子的礼服 (evening gown)，有时候我们还可以用 dressy 来强调这件 dress 很漂亮很时髦， 例如，"Her dressy dress really caught my eyes." (她漂亮的礼服吸引了我的目光。) 而 dress up 则是男生和女生都可以用的一个片语，意指作正式的穿着打扮，女生 dress up 的话当然就是穿 dress 了，而男生 dress up 的话自然就是穿西装打领带了。例如，"Lulu is dressed up today. She looks so nice." (露露今天穿着很正式，她看起来好美。) 小笨霖建议各位当你不管看到任何女生 dress up 出现时不妨赞美她 "I like your dress!" 或是 "You look so nice today!" 我想不管任何人听到你赞美她都会很高兴的
。
5. I don't like too much cleavage. 我不喜欢太暴露。
Cleavage 这个字在英文里有一个有趣的解释，就是指女生胸部之间的低垂部分，特别是指当女生穿低胸的礼服时，会若隐若现的「乳沟」。但是一般提到 cleavage 这个字其实就是指「暴露」而言。例如朋友试图游说你买一件低胸礼服，你就可以回答，"I don't like too much cleavage." (我不喜欢太露的衣服。) 或是 "My mom will kill me if she sees too much cleavage." (如果让我妈妈看到我露太多，她会杀了我的。)
想当然尔，男生常常会拿女生的 cleavage 来开玩笑，例如电视上看到的，"She's got so much cleavage that she can hide a fully-equipped platoon in between there." (她露太多了，多到可以让一整个排的兵力，带著全副武装躲在里面。)
6. I just want to buy some off-the-rack clothes. 我只想随便买一些现成的衣服。
Rack 指的是一般在商店中用来吊衣服的衣架，所以 off-the-rack 指的是那种由工厂大量制造的成衣，通常暗指很普通、不是特别好的衣服。例如我朋友问我，"Your jacket looks very nice. Where did you get it?" (你的外套很好看，是在哪买的啊？) 事实上那件外套是我在某夜市所抢来的地摊货，但英文里没有「地摊货」这样的讲法，所以我就可以回答他，"It's just something off-the-rack." (只是件普通的衣服啦！)
相较于 off-the-rack 这种便宜的衣服，custom-made 或是 tailor-made 指的是「量身定做」的。例如，"I need to get a custom-made tuxedo for my wedding." (我必须为了我的婚礼去买一件量身定作的燕尾服。)
7. This shirt is very stylish and not very expensive. 这件衬衫看起来很时髦，而且不会很贵。
当我们要称赞某一件衣服时髦的时候，我们可以用 good-looking, stylish 或是 becoming 来形容。Good-looking 是单纯的好看， stylish 则是好看之外还非常地时髦，而 becoming 则是指穿在你身上之后非常合适而好看。所以要是你陪好朋友去买衣服，他挑了一件看起来不错的衬衫，你就可以说，"It's very good-looking." ; "It's very stylish." 或是 "It's very becoming to (on) you."
8. I don't think this one will fit me. 我不觉得这件衣服我穿得下。
买衣服时最讨厌的就是明明看到一件自己中意的衣服，但却没有自己穿得下的型号。特别是娇小的东方人想要在美国买衣服常常会有这样的问题。所以有两句话一定要学起来。一句是 "It's not my size." 另一句则是 "It won't fit me." 这两句话都是当衣服型号不对时你可以用到的句子。例如在逛街时，朋友说，"Hey, check this out! I think you should buy it." (看看这件衣服，我想你该买下它。) 你说，"It looks good but it's not my size. Maybe it wil
l fit you." (它是看起来不错，但我想这不是我的尺码，或许你能穿得下。) 这里我想特别提醒大家一下中文和英文里习惯的不同，中文里的「我穿不下」用的是「我」当主词，在英文里却是 "It won't fit me." 用的是 衣服 "It" 当主词。
另外有一个字 alteration，我想也值得大家一学。住在美国的朋友，下次出门的时候不妨找看看有没有一些店挂著 alteration 的招牌，因为我每次看到这个招牌，就会忍不住想考考人家知不知道 alteration 是什么意思。(通常都是不知道啦！) 其实这个 alteration 就是指修改衣服，例如你买的裤子裤管太长想把它改短一点你就需要去找 alteration 的店，因为一般卖衣服的地方并不提供此类的服务。例如 : "I have a pair of pants that need alteration. Can you tell me where I should go?" (我有一件裤子需要修改，你知道我该去哪吗？)
9. Your clothes don't match. 你的衣服看起来不搭配。
"Clothes don't match." 指的是衣服不搭配，可能是颜色的不搭配或是样式的不搭配。当然我们也可以更明确地指出是哪两件衣服不搭配，例如你朋友想买一件红色的上衣，你可以警告她，"This red top and your pants don't match." 或是 "This red top doesn't match your pants." 意思就是你这件红色的上衣跟你的裤子不搭配。
当然啦，外国人的审美观和我们是很不同的，像一般而言我们认为「红配绿」是奇丑无比，但小笨霖的指导教授偏偏就喜欢打扮的跟棵圣诞红一样，你想我能去跟她说，"I think your red sweater and green shirt don't match." 吗？当然是不行了，我的毕业论文还等著她签字呢！
10. Let me ring that up for you! 让我帮你结帐吧！
买方结帐最标准的讲法是 check out，例如你衣服都买好了，就可以拿到收银台 (cash register)，跟店员说，"I want to check out." 她就会帮你算钱。另外还有些店员喜欢用 ring it up 这个片语，同样也是结帐的意思，为什么呢？因为在开收银机的时候不是通常会听到 ring 的一声吗？所以这个 ring it up 就有了「结帐」的意思 (卖方用语，因为收银机由其操作)。比方说今天你看上了一件衣服但没有标示价钱，你拿著衣服去问收银员，结果她告诉你这件衣服只要 $9.99。这时候你就可以用这里学到的 ring it up 这个片语来回答她。"OK. Go ahead and ring it up for me." (好，那就帮我结帐吧！) 或是有时候店员看到你拿著衣服走过来，她也会主动地跟你说，"Let me ring that up for you."
生活小故事
我们常常讲要「入境随俗」(In Rome, do as the Romans do)，但要真的作到入境随俗简单吗？我想真的很难很难。我认识的朋友当中，就有些人会拿我们的传统价值观来要
求老美遵循。例如我们不喜欢有人在吃饭时把餐具插在碗里，因为那样好像是在拜拜一样。但当你在美国看到老美这么作时，你会纠正他吗？我是不会啦！但我的朋友当中居然就有人会跑去跟老美说，"It's not very polite to do this." 我想美国的人种那么多，要是每个人都有自己国家的规矩，那老美倒底要服从日本的？德国的？伊朗？还是说不管哪一国人都遵循美国的习惯，哪种比较容易些？
再举一例，老美他们特别喜欢让你用红笔签名，(因为用红色的笔签名看起来比较不像是影印出来的！) 像是这点也会让我觉得很不自在，因为从小妈妈就教我不能用红笔写某人的名字 (代表不吉利 or 绝交)，所以后来上了小学，我还会因为在学校不乖被老师打手心，回家后气得用红笔写老师的名字一百遍。但现在我人在美国，我能跟老美说我不喜欢用红笔签名吗？当然是不行了，所以每次都只好硬著头皮给它签下去了。因此这个「入境随俗」大家讲起来都很轻松愉快，但是当你遇到了一些像我所说的「文化冲击」时，你还能坦然以对吗？这就是考验个人智慧的时候，也是一个将来有心出国的人可以预先思考的问题。
