―S.H.E. is going to sing at the CCTV annual Spring Festival Evening Party, is that true?‖cried out Peng Weiye, a Senior 2 girl in Shanghai and die-hard(铁杆的) S.H.E. fan.

After checking it on the Internet, Peng quickly phoned friends to spread the news. For fans like her, S.H.E.’s performance is perhaps the only part of the old fashioned evening to get excited about.

The Taiwanese band is made up of Selina, Hebe and Ella. Their name comes from the first letter of each of the singers’ English names.

Last week S.H.E. announced they will perform in Las Vegas, US, over Christmas and then in Guangzhou on January 15.

At their Shanghai show on October 30, hundreds of parents waited outside the Hongkou Stadium. Thousands of teenagers sang, cried and shouted as the band performed.

―I love their music, healthy image and everything related to them. Thank God that, although my parents don’t understand why I love them so much, they still bought me a ticket for that show,‖ said Peng about the Shanghai performance.

It is not just on the mainland that the three girls have thrilled (make sb. excited) audiences. In the past year the band has passed through Taiwan, Hong Kong and even Singapore and Malaysia.

When the three high school girls entered a singing contest in Taiwan in 2000, none of them ever dreamed of being a superstar. ―We had never met before, and we didn’t talk at all at the beginning,‖ recalled Ella.

When asked about the secret of their success, she said, ―Our average looks and not-so-expensive clothes keep us close to our fans. We are happy to be the girl next door, your singing sisters.‖

― It’s really a magical journey, from day- dreaming high school girls to singers performing on the same stage as our idols. Nothing but magical,‖ she said.

45.What makes Peng Weiye, a senior 2 girl, so excited?

A. She is the one who will be met by S.H.E.

B. S.H.E. will perform in Las Vegas over Christmas.

C. Her parents bought her a ticket for S.H.E.’s Shanghai show.

From the moment that an animal is born it has to make decisions. It has to decide which of the things around it are for eating, and which are to be avoided; when to attack and when to run away. The animal is, in fact, playing a very dangerous game with its environment, a game in which it must make decisions—a matter of life or death.

Animals’ability to act reasonably is believed to come partly from what we may call ―genetic(遗传性的)learning‖, which is different from the individual(个体的)learning that an animal does in the course of its own lifetime. Genetic learning is learning by a species—animals of the same kind—as a whole and it is achieved by selection of those members of each generation that happen to act in the right way. However, the role of genetic learning depends upon how similar the future environment is to the past. The more important individual experience is likely to be, the less important is genetic learning as a means of getting over the problems of the survival game. Because most animals live in ever changing environments from one generation to the next, it is not surprising to find that very few species indeed depend wholly upon genetic learning.

In the great majority of animals, their particular ways of acting in a new environment are a compound(复合体)of individual experience added to the action patterns animals are born with. That is why animals can survive.

49.The animal’s life will come to an end_____.

A. if the animal makes a wrong decision

B. if the animal plays a dangerous game

C. when the animal attacks its enemy

D. when the animal runs too slowly 50.Very few species depend entirely on genetic learning because____.

A. each generation has its own way of learning

B. their environments change all the time

C. they can act reasonably on their own

D. it takes their whole life to learn

51.When the environment doesn’t change much_____.

A. animals cannot act in a right way

B. genetic learning is less important for animals

C. individual learning plays a less important role

D. animals cannot get over problems on their own

52.Animals’ living on generation after generation depends on _____.

A. their natural action pattern with their own experience

B. the lessons they have learnt during their lifetime

C. their experience in particular environments

D. the knowledge passed on by their parents

On hearing the words ―Just do it!‖, you will know there is a Nike product nearby. If it’s ―Always Coca-Cola‖, you can be sure someone wants to sell you a refreshing drink.

An advertising slogan(广告标语) is to a brand what eyes are to a person. The slogan helps people understand the brand better by telling them what it wants to sell to its customers. Good slogans leave a message inside people’s minds. It’s almost certain that every brand has a popular slogan.

Here are a few examples:

―Just do it!‖—This slogan speaks out to teens. It tells them to do something, but only if they think it’s worth it. And if so, why not do it wearing Nike?

―Always Coca-Cola.‖—Coke’s slogans change every few years, but this one has enjoyed a lasting popularity because it shows the brand’s spirit. It seems to say ―Coke is the only drink there is; there are no other forms of drinks.‖

―Share moments, share life.‖—This slogan from Kodak connects photos and beauty. It asks people to remember the happy moments in life by taking photos of them—using Kodak film of course!

53.What would be the best title for the text?

A. Just Do It!

B. Slogan And Brand

C. Famous Slogans

D. What Is A Good Slogan?

54.Which of the following can best explain the underlined sentence (paragraph 2)?

A. A good advertising slogan should draw people’s attention.

B. A brand should have an advertising slogan just as people have eyes.

C. An advertising slogan is as important to a brand as eyes are to a person.

D. An advertising slogan acts as the eyes of a brand.

55.The word ―them‖ in the last paragraph refers to____.

A. people

B. the happy moments

C. photos and beauty

You are from a middle- class family, and live in a normal-size home without any showy possessions, but you are surrounded by surprising consumption(消费). This contrast is beginning to bother your 6-year-old son. You are worried that he will want to live as they do, and wonder if you should move.

Sometimes big pocket money, joyful birthday parties, special playrooms and super-big houses tell you that your neighbors probably have more money than you do, and that they’re not as careful as you are with money, but you may find that they cook and dig in the garden with their children just as often as you do, talk with them as freely and read to them every night.

Or you may find that some of these parents stay in one wing of their big house while their child plays by himself, way off in a wing of his own. In that unfortunate case, he is basically growing up alone without being looked after properly, but this can happen to a child who lives in a normal-size house, too, if he has a TV, a computer and a few video games in his room. Even the most caring parent doesn’t walk in and out of it to see what show her child is watching, what Internet site he has found and if he’s still playing that video game.

Too much uncontrolled screen time may lead to a certain loss of innocence(天真),but mostly this child will lose the sense of unity and satisfaction, and if it doesn’t , you might decide to move. Don’t judge your neighborhood too harshly(严厉地),though. There are some things that are right with almost any neighborhood and some things that are wrong with the best of them—like those super-big houses. The wealth of their owners—and the way they throw money around—may make your son feel sorry for himself, unless you help him understand that you and his dad save some of the money, give some to people who don’t have enough and use the rest to pay for whatever the family needs.

Children want—should be provided with—explanations when their parents don’t give them what they want.

57.What is the problem with the worried parent in the text?

A. Her house isn’t as big as her rich neighbors’

B. Her son is left alone without anyone in charge.

C. She cannot provide her son with a special playroom.

D. She worries about the effect of her neighbors on her son.

58.In Paragraphs 2and 3, the author seems to agree that parents should____.

A. spend more time with their children

B. give their children more freedom

C. work hard to lead a richer life

D. set an example for their children to follow

59.By saying ―throw money around‖(Paragraph 4),the author means that rich people___.

A. spend money carelessly

B. save money for their children

C. help the poor people willingly

D. leave money all round the house

60.What is the main idea the author aims to express in the text?

A. Children are unfortunate to have poor parents.

B. Children should enjoy their comfortable life.

C. Children need proper guidance from their parents.

D. Children feel ashamed of themselves in a rich neighborhood.

Section B Directions:Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (B) With the coming of big data age, data science is supposed to be starved for, of which the adaption can point a profound change in corporate competitiveness. Companies, both born-in the digital era and traditional world are showing off their skills in data science. Therefore, it seems to have been creating a great demand for the experts of this type. Mr Carlos Guestrin, machine learning professor from University of Washington argues that all software applications will need inbuilt intelligence within five years, making data scientists—people trained to analyze large bodies of information — key workers in this emerging “cognitive” technology economy. There are already critical applicat ions that depend on machine learning, a subfield of data science, led by recommendation programs, fraud detection system, forecasting tools and applications for predicting customer behavior. Many companies that are born digital—particularly internet companies that have a great number of real-time customer interactions to handle—are all-in when it comes to data science. Pinterest, for instance, maintains more than 100 machine learning models that could be applied to different classes of problems, and it constantly fields request from managers eager to use this resource to deal with their business problem. The most important factor weighing on many traditional companies will be the high cost of launching a serious machine-learning operation. Netflix is estimated to spend $150m a year on a single application and the total bills is probably four times that once all its uses of the technology are taken into account. Another problem for many non-technology companies is talent.Of the computer science experts who use Kaggle, only about 1000 have deep learning skills, compared to 100,000 who can apply other machine learning techniques, says Mr Goldbloom. He adds that even some big companies of this type are often reluctant to expend their pay scales to hire the top talent in this field. A third barrier to adapting to the coming era of “smart” applications, however, is likely to be

With the car full of flowers we were going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard (柜厨) outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow. “Buy it, ” my wife said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof rack. I’ve always wanted one like that.” What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on the roof rack. It was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too. In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea. After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake, I wonder?” In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me. “Right, sir, ” he said. “Do you need any more help?” I was a bit puzzled. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You have been very kind. I live just on the road.” He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well, ” he said, laughing. “It’s a cupboard you’ve got there! We thought it was something else.”
