Differences in education between China and America
历史文化学院08文史哲基地班秦洁（200800080033）There are lots of difference in education between China and America. Many people analyze this phenomenon from all angles. Generally speaking, knowledge is instilled into Chinese students. Teachers in china always prepare their lessons well and in the classes, they only teach students to remember it. But in America, classes are usually heuristic. Teachers won’t organize the class excellently, and they stimulate students to think deeply in class. But this difference in education is surface, and using this surface means to explain the gap of education between China and America is far more enough.
In my opinion, the cause why Chinese education is behindhand is that Chinese education lack faith.
Everyone must have faith, and usually one without faith can’t achieve great success. So does the education. To a university, if it don’t have its own faith but only seeks bigger campus, more trees or higher buildings, then the university will never be high-class. Faith is the soul of universities.
What’s more, faith is not something empty or untouched. The School Motto can always reflect the faith of the university. In America, many famous universities were associated with religion in the beginning, so their school mottos can be very religious. These mottos are followed by all teachers and students in the campus, and perhaps just like religious believers follow doctrines. At the same time, school mottos of the other famous universities have nothing to do with religion, but they are also the standard followed. For example, the Pennsylvania University’s school motto is “Laws without character are in vain”, and almost every college student in Pennsylvania is special.
In China, almost all school mottos have traditional characteristics. They are meaningful and at this point, Chinese universities are as good as the American’s. But the problem is that our school mottos are more of slogans, but are not the real faith. For example, Shandong University has a Confucian and meaningful school motto—“Noble in Spirit, Boundless in Knowledge”. If everyone does the things our school motto requires, I think Shandong University will soon be one of the most famous universities all over the world. But the fact is that our school motto is a symbol of our university, and it’s only a symbol. People in Shandong University tell “Noble in Spirit, Boundless in Knowledge” to the other people more frequently than themselves. “Patriotism, Advancement, Democracy and Science” reflects the unique history of Peking University, but the school motto can’t reflect the reality. Peking University is far away from “Patriotism, Advancement, Democracy and Science”admittedly. In other words, “Patriotism, Advancement, Democracy and Scien ce” is the slogan but not the faith of Peking University.
How to improve the quality of Chinese Universities is a big issue. And to catch up with the level of American education will take a long time. To be high-class, the chief thing is to establish relief. When Shandong University really have its soul—“Noble in Spirit, Boundless in Knowledge”, then it can achieve its goal—“The
world level”.
