A poor young artist came to the gate of the subway station. He put his hat on the ground and took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground. Then he began playing the violin. The words on that paper said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it.”He was soon surrounded by people wondering what had happened. After about half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry, grabbed his shoulders and said, “Yes, it’s you. You did come here. I knew that you’re an honest man and would certainly come here.”

Later someone asked the violinist: “At that time you needed to pay the tuition fee and had to play the violin every day to make the money. Everyone knows how the story of Cinderella does everything from sweeping the floor to cooking the meals before she meets the prince. If someone asked Cinderella, “Are there any kinds of household work that you particularly hate?”She probably would answer , “Why , none , of course. Housework is my duty!”In the real world, however, most people have certain dislikes for some kinds of household work. Two of these tasks are ironing(熨)clothes and washing dishes.

Ironing clothes is most hated because it is not a task that can be completed quickly or thoughtlessly. Each piece of clothing must be handled(处理)separately, so ironing a basket of them can take hours! If you do not follow directions carefully, it might become wrinkled and you have to start over. Perhaps that is why ironing is not a favorite thing to do. It calls for extreme attention to detail from beginning to end.

Another household job that many people dislike is washing dishes. Of course, some people claim that this work is no longer a problem because , we have dishwashers now! However, no one would argue that dishes, silverware, and especially pots and pans washed in a dishwasher don’t come out as clean as they do when washed by hand. For this reason, many of us continue to wash our dishes. And it is a job that not only takes a lot of energy but also requires the patience to wash and dry them. In addition, unlike ironing clothes, washing dishes is a thing that usually must be done every day. I don’t know how Cinderella felt about this particular task, but I believe that most people hate it as much as I do.

4. For Cinderella, doing household work is __________.

A. what she hates to do

B. what she is responsible for

C. what she loves to do

D. what she is content with

5. Most people hate to do clothes-ironing because _________.

A. it takes a lot of time

B. it has to be done by one person

C. it must be handled skillfully

D. it needs careful planning

6. Many people still prefer washing dishes by hand to machine washing because _________.

A. hand washed dishes are cleaner

B. dishwashers are not so easily handled

C. some dishes cannot be washed by machine

D. washing dishes by hand is cheaper

7. Ironing is different from washing dishes in that _________.

A. it requires patience

B. it is not a daily housework

C. it is not tiring

D. it needs less care

C

Back in the early 1990s, I knew little about computers. But what I did know was that something huge was happening. It was changing imaginations and possibilities like nothing I had ever known. And I knew I had dreams that hadn’t come true. But I didn’t know how to realize them until I met with my old friend, Rolly Rouse, when we happened to move into the same neighborhood. Rolly often called me with a lot of ideas. We talked about the Internet and about starting a new online company together.

He was then developing a plan and he wanted me to be a part of it: we would give people wonderful electronic houses on a CD-ROM and let them modify(改变)those houses to their own needs. When they were satisfied,we would enable them to go online to make the project happen, and to get the products Building Blocks was the name Rolly came up with for the new company. Rolly simply gave up his business to commit himself full time to Building Blocks. I soon joined him after I quit my well paid job at a newspaper.

Together we developed a demo to show the features of our CD—ROM, “The New American Dream Home”. Then we took it to the annual convention of the National Association of Home Builders in Boston. To our satisfaction, nearly everyone expected to see what we were showing, including the top companies. When we left, we had invitations to tell them more about Building Blocks. That was the start of my real lifetime dream and Building Blocks, our company, has been on a road to success ever since.

D. they had the chance to visit some famous building companies

It seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠)and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force. Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a form of social connection. Kids don’t develop this behavior until around age four, the study found. Autistic(患自闭症的)children are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect.

“Emotional(情绪的)effect seems to be a born thing that connects us together,” said Molly Helt, a graduate student at the University of Connecticut. “Yawning may be part of that.” Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did.

“The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them, ” she said. “The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand th at humans have minds that are different from others’," she added. "Autistic people never seem to understand that.”

Like infectious (有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that improves social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.

12.According to the passage, which of the following statements is True?

A.It is hard to yawn when you see others yawn.

B.Yawning is a form of communication.

C.Autistic children are more likely to catch yawns.

D.Yawning too much does harm to people’s health.

A.it is strange to yawn back if people around you yawn.

B.some kids are too young to yawn after others.

C.autistic children yawn easily when others yawn.

D.y awning can be used to test children’s development.

Last September, I entered my high school. The moment I stepped into the campus, I could feel something amazing was happening. Actually, my new school life was more than expect. I met my friendly classmates and lots of excellent teachers. It’s like my ideal daydream came into reality.

I studied much harder than in junior middle school because I knew there’s a bigger challenge waiting for me. And I also joined in a variety of after-school activities which cultivated my all-sided abilities. I didn’t stop struggling for my goal in every single day though there was ups and downs. To my satisfaction, my efforts was paid back. I have seen my gradual growth and development in the past year. My first high school year can be a cornerstone of the future success.

I really like to share my experience with the new comers to help them adapt to their new lives in high school. I suggest that they make proper plans to make sure that no time will be wasted. And I also think they should better learn to make a balance between study and after-school activities.
