Part I Reading Comprehension (共20题,每小题2分,共40分) Passage 1

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

Life is difficult.

But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it.

Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, or even their nation.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems depending on their nature cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Y et, it i s in this whole of solving problems that life has its meaning.

Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct." Harvard University is on the both sides of the Charies River. The oldest institution of higher learning in the United States was founded in 1636. In 1638 it was named for John Harvard, its first founder. During the 1640s the college was enlarged although it was short of money. Passage 4

(非英语类学生必做,英语类学生不做)

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

The producers of instant coffee found their product strongly resisted in the market places despite their manifest advantages. Furthermore, the advertising expenditure for instant coffee was far greater than that for regular coffee. Efforts were made to find the cause of the consumers “seemingly unreasonable resistance to the product”. The reason given by most people was dislike for the taste. The producers suspected that there might be deeper reasons. However, this was confirmed by one of motivation research's classi c studies, one often cited in the trade. Mason Haire, of the University of California, constructed two shopping lists that were identical except for one item. There were six items common to both lists: that were identical except for one item. There were six items common to both lists: hamburger, carrots, baking powder, bread, canned peaches and

potatoes, with the bands or amounts specified. The seventh item, in the fifth place on both lists, read “1 Ib. Maxwell House coffee” on one list and “Nescafe instant coffee” on the other. One list was given to each person in a group of fifty women, and the other list to those in another group of the same size. The women were asked to study their lists and then to describe, as far as they could, the kind of woman (“personality and character”) who would draw up that shopping list. Nearly half of those who had received the list including instant coffee described a housewife who was lazy and a poor planner. On the other hand, only one woman in the other group described the housewife, who had included regular coffee on her list, as lazy; only six of that group suggested that she was a poor planner. Eight women felt that the instant-coffee user was probably not a good wife? No one in the other group drew such a conclusion about the other group drew such a conclusion about the housewife who intended to buy instant coffee.

Passage 4

(英语类学生必做,非英语类学生不做)

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

V ery old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes into contact with them. Their values––this can’t be repeated too often––are not necessarily our values. Physi cal comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying (腐烂) food covered by small worms, ad an old person lying alone on bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying thi s concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.

Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car: it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older. Y ou can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results. And at what point should you cease to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by continuing the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to make the old body active, knowing that it is designed to die? Y ou cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the

principle that while there’s life, there’s hope.

When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age i s happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.

Modern Life in the Modern World Many people insist that now we live in the most wonderful and promising era in history, as more and more machines take over our hard work, making our societies more efficient and our lives more comfortable. For instance, telephone and cell phone become so popular that you can anywhere if you want. Household electrical appliances free us from housework so that we can enjoy more leisure time. Modern transportation makes the world so small that you can travel by air from one city to another in a few hours which could take several days by trains. In spite the above benefits we gained from the development of science and technology, however, everyone now worries about the pressure modern life. As more and more machines are applied in our daily life, life pace keeps getting faster and the world is getting too complex. As we pursue more and more material things such as luxury cars, personal computers, big houses etc. our financial pressures are growing. As job markets become shrinking and job competition becomes intense, everyone worries about losing his job. What’s more, many people are now faced with the threat of terrorists or live in constant fear because of the unfair wealth distribution between the rich and the poor. Since human beings are largely a pleasure seeking and pain-avoiding creature, we never stop inventing things to release us from hard labor. And we also try our best to prove that we are the masters of our surrounding. Th at’s why our civilization keeps going fo rward and every new generation benefits from the efforts made by previous one. As high tech develops at a surprisingly high speed, we will gain more instead of suffering more and our future bright and promising.

Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet. Passage One Questions 1~5 are besed on the following passage. Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boys to meet girls. Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars by introducing suitable marriage partners to each other, but partners also play a role in the process during which young Koreans meet. In Confucius Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred thing, the scene of the first meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage (血统)and keeping the blooding pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters. Often, the girl will work out a system of secret signals with her mother, from which her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders a coffee it might mean that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a milk shows that she wants them to stay. Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introduction being made by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man in the country who has not gone through this process --- sometimes six or seven times. 1. The word “matchmaking” in the passage means ____. A. a very formal ritual(仪式)attended by boys and girls B. introducing boys and girls to know each other for the purpose of marriage C. producing matches to make a fire or light a cigarette D. arranging games between men and women 2. The fact that the first meeting is repeated again and again in coffee shops in the main hotels suggests that ____. A. Koreans like drinking coffee in coffee shops very much B. men and women want to meet as many times as possible C. they are busy with communicating with different people D. marriage is seen as a business contract instead of something sacred

Take Ted, for example. He prides himself on speaking his mind, and has something to say on everything. But his frankness is often extremely embarrassing. He is incapable of saying, “I thought that last advertising campaign had a lot of good ideas in it, but perhaps next time we could give the copy more vitality (活力) .” Instead, he could say, “That campaign was a disaster. A child of three could have done be tter!” The fact that he is often right does not help. Other employees dislike his manner even more, he is too sensitive to notice. Another character among the list of ill-mannered employees is Sally, who seems to regard just being at work as a severe punishment. Everything is done unwillingly. Asking her to do a task beyond her basic job description is often not worth the trouble. It will be done, but half-heartedly. Fergus is just the opposite. He shows an over-familiarity to his boss. When an important visitor is shown into the manager’s office, Fergus cannot take the hint and leave. In stead he w3ill attempt to take part in the conversation, declaring, “You can talk in font of me. Henry and I don’t have many secrets, do we? ” Over the years Pergus has fallen behind his former equals. But he seeks to maintain the same close relationship that he imagines existed in their younger days. 1. Which of the following words describes Ted best? A. Cold B. Tactless C. Stupid D. Warm-hearted 2. It can be inferred from the passage that Ted . A. is well-known for his honestly B. tends to blame others rather than himself C. often gives the right idea in the wrong way D. is treated unfairly by the management 3. Which of the following is true about Sally? A. She thinks it’s unfair to have so much work to do. B. She is unhappy to help others. C. She hates being ordered about. D. She does everything half-heartedly. 4. Form the passage, we can infer that Fergus . Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also scorching in our apartment. This was 1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner for another ten years. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace indoors. He suggested we could see a movie. It was a brilliant plan. Movie theaters were one of the few places you could sit all day and —most important —sit in air conditioning. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager at our theater. Mr. Bellow did not mind if you did. That particular day, my brother and I sat through both movies twice, trying to escape the heat. We bought three bags of popcorn and three sodas each. Then, we sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. We’dalready seen the second movie once before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr. Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it. We left the theater around 8, just before the evening shows began. But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day too. Finally, on the fourth day, the heat wave broke. Still, to this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite half of John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart ’disalogue from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of 1962. They ’rereally memories of the screen, not memories of my life. 1. People and the sources of air pollution are found in the same place. This means that cities with large population have the biggest problem of dirty air. Air pollution is caused by many different things. A major source of air pollution is the gas fumes (烟尘) from cars. Another major source of dirty air is the burning of coal and oil for energy. This energy is needed to make electricity. Of course, much more electricity is used in the city than in the country. On the average, we throw away trash and garbage than years before. The fumes from iron, steel, chemical, and petroleum production add particles (粉尘) to the air. The effects of air pollution range from mild headaches to death. The levels of pollution found in heavy traffic may cause headaches or loss of clear sight. Wherever coal and oil are used for fuel, fumes may kill trees and plants. In some of the larger cities, these fumes endanger the lives of human beings by leading to lung diseases and causing early deaths. 1. From the passage, we know that ______. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the Answer Sheet. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood and behavior and human beings are no exception. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, however, symptoms (症状) are severe enough to damage their lives and to cause considerable stress. These people are suffering from SAD. The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months. The standard figure says that around 2% of people in Northern Europe suffer badly, with many more (10%) putting up with milder symptoms. Across the world the incidence (发生率) increases with distance from the equator (赤道), except where there is snow on the ground, when it becomes less common. More women than men are found having SAD. Children and young people can also suffer from it. The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known. As the cause is lack of bright light, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a lightbox or a similar bright treatment. (Going to a brightly-lit climate, whether skiing or somewhere hot, is indeed a cure). The preferred level

We use both words and gestures to express our feelings ,but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways . It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language . So does laughter or crying . There are also a number of striking similarities in the way different animals show the same feelings . Dogs , tigers and humans , for example , often show their teeth when they are angry . This is probably because they are born with those behavior patterns . Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world . In Chinese and English literature , a phrase like “he went pale and began to tremble”suggests that the man is either very afraid or deeply shocked . However , “he opened his eyes wide ” is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise . In Chinese surprise can be described in a phrase like “they stretched out their tongues ”. Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike .
