Four years ago, I helped start a Blessing in a Backpack program in my school district. Each week we distributed backpacks filled with a weekend?s worth of food for at-risk students in our district.

Our packing area was in one of the district?s high schools, made up of students who could not make it in a traditional classroom, or who had academic issues that would keep them from graduating. The headmaster of the academy assigned us a young man having classroom and

personal issues. Andrew was a polite, handsome young man with a ready smile, but his eyes showed hurt and he seemed fearful of adults.

During the packing, he did what we asked but we could tell his heart was not in it. But after a few weeks, our young volunteer started to warm up to us and the job. After a month, Andrew was very involved and inviting other young people to help us. We could see he was excited to be given a leadership role.

We came to rely on Andrew more and more. Then he goofed up and was driven out of school for three days. The following week my co-chair and I talked to Andrew, letting him know how important he was to the organization and how he had disappointed us with his behavior. You could see the tears in his eyes during our talk.

As the months passed, we could see a change in Andrew. He became focused and positive about his future. A few months before June, he informed us excitedly that he was going to graduate.

I think that might have been one of his proudest moments. The headmaster later told us that had we not stepped in and given him support, encouragement and guidance, he was sure Andrew would have been dead from violence.

As graduation approached, students talked about who they were inviting and how proud they would be to have their families there, but Andrew had no one who would come. I knew that I could not let him down, not after all his growth and improvement. I would be there for him.

As the proud graduates walked in to sit on stage, I could see a light in his eyes as he approached. When he reached me, he touched my hand, as if to say thank you. Tears welled up in both of our eyes.

I learned that my dear friend Andrew turned his life around. He is now in his second year in a university and doing very well. Not only had we fed him meals on weekends through his own Blessing in a Backpack, we had fed his soul.

TIRANA (Reuters) —Of 14 sorties (架次) flown by British

World War Two (WWⅡ) pilots supplying Anti-Nazi fighters in Albania on Oct. 29, 1944, 12 returned to the base in Italy, one failed to drop its load and “the other is missing and

assumed to have crashed”, according to official records.

For seven decades, the bomber was believed to be at the bottom of the Adriatic Sea. Then, last October, a British and U.S. team climbed into the Albanian mountains to find its wreckage (残骸) spotted by a villager there.

The vital clue would come in the form of a gold ring, the inside of it carved with “Joyce & John”, kept by an Albanian villager Jaho Cala and then his son.

“My father gave it to me when I got married in 1971, but told me clearly the ring did not belong to our family and I was to return it to its owner,” Jaho?s son, Xhemil Cala, told Reuters.

Twenty years later, Cala, a police officer, always wore the ring. But he had not given up returning it to its rightful owner. Finally, he contacted the embassies of the US and Britain —the two countries t hat helped liberate Albania from the Nazis a month after Flt Sgt Thompson?s death. Three months later, the British embassy confirmed the ring was Flt Sgt Thompson?s, and contacted his family. Then the riddle was solved.

A flight engineer, Sergeant John Thompson and Joyce Mozley got married in June 1944 but only spent a weekend together before being posted overseas. Thompson?s plane dropped supplies to the Biza valley, but on turning west to return to Italy, it crashed, killing its crew. His wife remarried after the war and passed away in 1995. At the ceremony in Albania?s Defence Ministry, Cala kneeled as he handed the ring to Thompson?s 92-year-old sister, Dorothy Websteralong with a piece of rock from the mountain that brought the plane down.

“Your brothe r helped to liberate my country. He will never be forgotten.” Defence Minister Mimi Kodheli told Webster.

“I remember him very well, as if it were yesterday,” Webster told Reuters, adding she was “excited … getting all these that we never thought we would ever get”.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has nine terminals. Terminal 1 is by the entrance, the Tom Bradley International Terminal is in the center and Terminal 8 is by the exit. While it?s not a far walk between neighboring terminals, you?ll need to take the free LAX shuttle (or run) if you?re changing airlines from, say, Terminal 1 to Terminal 8.

Timing

Day or night, LAX is almost always busy. Most restaurants and shops inside the terminals close up for the night around 11 pm.

Delays

Crowds, not weather (except rare cases of thick fog), can cause delays at LAX. Restaurants and Bars

Some of L.A.?s most famous restaurants and pubs have outposts at LAX, including Umami Burger (Tom Bradley International Terminal). And since it?s L.A., fresh fruit, vegetables and other green snacks are available at Farmers Market (Terminal 5).

Shops and Amenities (设施)

You can shop at high-end boutiques (精品店) like Hugo Boss in the Tom Bradley International Terminal. You can pick up an L.A.-themed souvenir at Hollywood Style (Terminal 4) or I Love L.A. (Terminal 5). Each terminal has lounges available for business and first-class passengers for free. Surprisingly, there are no on-site gyms or spas at LAX, but some hotels nearby offer day passes to their facilities.

Hotels

No hotels are attached to LAX, but several are located just blocks away along Century Boulevard, including the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles. These hotels have free airport shuttles for their guests.

Services and Facilities

Free Wi-Fi is available in all terminals (you can also buy higher-speed service for $4.95 an hour or $7.95 for 24 hours). If flying makes you nervous (and dogs don?t), you can calm yourself by petting a therapy (心理疗法) dog from the LAX Pets Unstressing Passengers (PUPs) program. (Look for a pooch wearing a red “Pet Me” vest.)

64. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

When it comes to seeing eye-to-eye with humans, Baxter is a roboticist?s best friend.

QUT?s newest robot is helping researchers break down the technological boundaries that stop them from working safely side-by-side with humans.

The key — seeing and understanding the world as we do.

“Once robots can see and understand the environment they operate in, they can make decisions that allow them to work safely beside us,” said Professor Peter Corke, world-famous roboticist with QUT?s Science and Engineering Faculty and Director of the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision (ACRV).

“Current industrial robots are dangerous for humans to work around because they?re simply not equipped to recognise and avoid obstacles suddenly in their way.

“Baxter uses a range of sensors to detect movement around it, as well as s pring-loaded joints which stop it continuing a pre-programmed movement if it

meets an unexpected obstacle.”

Officially launched at QUT last night by federal

Minister for Employment and Training Christopher Pyne, the

ACRV brings together Australia?s top com puter vision and robotics researchers, who are creating the next generation of robots that can see and understand complex, real-world environments.

They are researching the use of robotic vision to create advanced farming tools, handle Crown of Thorn starfish outbreaks on the Great Barrier Reef and develop low-cost solutions for key health and medical problems.

“Robotic vision is the key enabling technology that will allow robotics to transform labour-intensive (劳动密集) industries and see robots become a common feature of the modern world,” ACRV Chief Operating Officer Dr Sue Keay said.

“We consider that …seeing? is far more than just processing images.

“It?s a complex process tightly related to both memory and action, which gives robots the

understanding they need to perform tasks that involve objects and places while at the same time providing rapid and continuous feedback for control.

“Robotic automation has transformed manufacturing, household cleaning and soon cars but robotics has made relatively little headway in other industries where the world is complex and time varying, like retail (零售).

“Robots that can see, learn and respond as humans do will increase productivity in industries critical to Australia?s economy.”

68. Robots can not work with humans at present mainly because _______ .

A. the boundaries separate man and robots

B. some technological problems remain to be settled

C. robots can break down any obstacles

D. robots are roboticists? best friends

69. According to Professor Peter Corke, _________.

A. robots are intelligent enough to make decisions

B. researchers are absolutely sure about Baxter?s safety

C. spring-loaded joints are useful in stopping a robot? s movement

D. industrial robots can avoid an unexpected obstacle

70. From what Dr. Sue says, we know that ________.

A. “seeing” means processing images

B. memory and action are complex processes

C. robots understand their performances quite well

D. robots need “seeing” to send feedback for control

71. Robotic automation ________.

A. has set foot in all industries

B. has changed the complex world

C. can hardly be applied to all fields at present

D. has made the world complex and time varying

“The shark took about forty pounds,” the old man said aloud. He took my harpoon (鱼叉) too and all the rope, he thought, and now my fish bleeds again. The old man did not like to look at the

remaining fish any longer since his fish had been ruined. When the fish had been hit it was as though he himself were hit.

But I killed the shark that hit my fish, he thought. And he was the biggest dentuso that I have ever seen. And God knows that I have seen big ones.

It was too good to last, he thought. I wish it had been a dream now and that I had never hooked the fish and was alone in bed on the newspapers.

“But man is not made for defeat,” he said. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” I am sorry that I killed the fish though, he thought. Now the bad time is coming and I do not even have the harpoon. The dentuso is cruel and able and strong and intelligent. But I was more intelligent than he was. Perhaps not, he thought. Perhaps I was only better armed.

“Don?t think, old man,” he said aloud. “Sail on this course and take it when it comes.”

But I must think, he thought. Because it is all I have left. That and baseball. But do you think my hands were as great a handicap as the bone spurs (刺)? I cannot know.

“Think about something cheerful, old man,” he said. “Every minute now you are closer to home. You sail lighter for the loss of forty pounds.”

He knew quite well the pattern of what could happen when he reached the inner part of the current. But there was nothing to be done now.

“Yes, there is,” he said aloud. “I can tie my knife to the end of one of the oars(桨).”

So he did that with the tiller (舵柄) under his arm and the sheet of the sail under his foot.

“Now,” he said. “I am still an old man. But I am not unarmed.”

72. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that the old man _____________.

A. successfully protected his fish

B. had his fish eaten up by a shark

C. killed a shark after a fierce fight

D. caught a big fish of 40 pounds

73. The author presents the character mainly through the description of __________.

B. the emotion

C. the psychological activities

D. the behaviour

74. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 implies that he ________.

A. can be destroyed spiritually but not defeated

B. can?t be defeated physically but destroyed

C. can?t be physically and spiritually defeated

D. can be physically but not spiritually defeated

75. The old man?s words at the end of the story suggest he was___________.

A. worried to see sharks again

B. desperate as he had nothing to fight sharks with

C. confident that he could still fight sharks

D. fearless though he had nothing to fight sharks with

Popularization of Campus Football

China?s Ministry of Education has promoted popularization of campus football in the country?s schools. It is of great significance to popularize campus football. Firstly, football training in schools will help teenagers to build up their bodies. Secondly, it will enable teenagers to lay a solid foundation of football at an early age, which makes it possible for the national team to select excellent football players in the future.

However, ahead of us lie some difficulties. At present, the majority of the schools in our country have no football facilities, like standard football fields. Also, qualified coaches are in great need.

As far as I am concerned, in order to popularize campus football and realize China?s football

dream, I strongly advocate that we should make joint efforts to contribute to the youth football progress and that local governments at various levels should take effective measures to support the youth football development.

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I?d phone to find out a bit more.

M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It?s quite a new club —we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.

W: That sounds inter esting. I?m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago.

I?m looking for ways to meet people. Er,what kinds of events do you organize?

M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings. W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?

M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday —French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come. W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your nam e and address, I?ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.
