During recent months, dense pollution has frequently blanketed many cities in China. Sometimes visibility drops to less than 1 kilometre, causing serious traffic jams, flight delays and highway closures. In some parts of Henan Province in Central China, the fog has reduced visibility to 200 metres. At least 109 flights have been canceled.

A rapid increase in the number of hazy days has been seen over eastern China. Hazy weather is often associated with pollution and composition of aerosols responsible for haze is rather complicated.

Protecting the environment is becoming more and more important to humans. How to protect the environment has become one of the biggest problems in the world. As students, what should we do to improve our environment? Then let’s do something from the little things. For example, we must protect forests because they are animals’home. We must plant more trees and grass, because they can make the world greener. And, no matter where we live, we should do something to keep our neighbourhood clean and tidy. We can collect waste paper or other waste things for recycling. We shouldn’t leave rubbish everywhere and spit in public places. Let’s use the air-conditioners and cars less, because they produce waste gas.

I think if everyone tries his best to protect the environment, the world will become much more beautiful, the hazy weather will be less and less, and our life will be better and better.

Gregg Bleakney’s trip

Gregg Bleakney’s dream was to travel the Americas from top to bottom. He got the idea after he finished a long bike ride. Gregg’s friend, Brooks Allen, also liked riding a bike. The two friends talked and made a plan. They would travel from Alaska to Argentina—by bike.

To pay for the trip, Gregg and Brooks worked to save money for a long time. Once they were on the road, they often camped outdoors and ate cheaply. In many places, local people opened their doors to the two friends and gave them food.

On their way, there were deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modern cities and ancient ruins such as Machu Picchu in Peru. And they made many friends from all over the world.

In May 2007, two years, twelve countries, and over 30,500 kilometres

later—Gregg finally reached Ushuaia, Argentina. Near Guatemala, Brooks had to go back and Gregg continued without him.

The trip taught both men a lot about travelling. What did they learn? Here is some of Gregg’s advice:

Travel light. You should not carry useless things with you.

Be flexible. Don’t plan everything. Then you’ll be more relaxed and pleased especially if there are problems.

Be polite. One traveller told Gregg, “Nobody wants to fight or cheat a nice man.”It’s true.

The blues music

During the 1800s, African Americans worked long days in the fields of the American South. They sang songs that they had brought from Africa while working. One person sang a line. Then a group of workers repeated it. The song’s words told about the hardships that people suffered. They clapped their hands and stomped their feet to the music.

In the 1860s, the music changed greatly. African American music took new forms. It was also influenced by dance music, which had great rhythm. Banjos became popular. A blues singer usually sang a line and then played the banjo in reply. By the early 1900s, the guitar had taken the place of the banjo in the blues music.

The blues music has many obvious characteristics. One of them is that the musical notes are often “bent”. That is, they are chang ed slightly to give a song more strength.

Lyrics are the words of a song. Blues lyrics describe everyday life. The lyrics are often about the relationships between men and women. They tell about sadness and overwork. They tell about finding and losing love, having money or being poor, being happy or sad and lonely. They almost always use the rhythms of everyday speech. A group of blues lyrics usually has three lines. The second line repeats the first line. The third line has different words.

By the 1940s, large numbers of African Americans moved to Chicago. There, a new kind of “Chicago” blues began. The new music was excellent dance music. Chicago blues led to the birth of a new music style—rock and roll.

1. Up in the air

Ron was out on a training flight. It was 1939 and he was training to be a Spitfire pilot. He was learning on a plane called the Miles Master. Sometimes the Miles Master had a problem with its tailplane. The tailplane was at the back of the plane, with two small wings linked to it. All planes need a tailplane or they can’t fly.

It was not often that there was a problem with the tailplane but it still made Flying Officer King very twitchy. A few years ago King had crashed in a Miles Master. He had ended up in hospital.

King had been working in a bank before the war. He had been a pilot, but it had only been a hobby. He had only flown planes in peace time and he would never make a good combat pilot. He was too old to learn to fly the new planes. The RAF were using him to give basic training to young pilots like Ron.

The Miles Master was a two-seater plane. Both seats had joysticks, so the plane could be flown by the pupil or the teacher. This was very handy when the pupil made a mistake because the teacher could take the controls. This often stopped the pupil crashing when they first flew the plane.

Ron had been doing well on his training. He was nearly ready to take his final test. He was proud of his flying. He had learned a lot in a short time. He was looking forward to the time when he could be a combat pilot in his own Spitfire. He knew the Nazis had plans to send bombers over to England. He wanted to help shoot them down. He could not wait to join the other pilots in his squadron.

Body

When we say a body, we mean a whole person or animal. But the word may just refer to the trunk (躯干) of the body, without the head, arms and legs.

Some people believe that a person has both a body and a soul. Have you ever come across this saying: Little bodies may have great souls (人小志气大)? It would be great if you could prove this to be so in your own case.

Once a small boy lived on a farm which seemed so far away from everywhere.

He needed to get up before sunrise every morning to help his father on the farm. During sunrise he would take a break and climb up on the fence along the side of the farm. He could see a house with golden windows. “If they could afford golden windows, then there must be other nice things inside the house.” He imagined how great it would be to live there. Then he promised himself, “Some day I will go there and see this wonde rful place.”

One morning, his father would go to the town and told him to stay at home for a rest. Knowing that this was his chance, he took a sandwich and headed across the

field towards the house with golden windows.

As the afternoon went on, he began to know how wrong he was. The house was much farther than he had expected. As he went near the house, he saw no golden windows but instead a place in bad need of a painting. A small girl very close to his age came out of the poor house and stood by the broken fence. The school in which he once studied is very famous. 他曾经学习过的那所学校

非常出名。

An old and very rich friend of mine told me he had an unpleasant experience. He went to a famous jewelry (珠宝) shop and asked to be shown some gold necklaces (项链). After examining several, he decided to buy a gold necklace with a precious stone, and asked if he could pay by cheque (支票).
