阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

A

You don‘t need millions to be happy. In fact, at The Happiness Institute in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough.

The institute opened its door last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying $ 200 an hour for lesson on how to feel great.

―You can actually increase your happiness levels. That‘s what we teach.‖ Said Timothy Sharp, founder of the institute.

Experts say that only about 15 percent of happiness comes from income, assets and other financial factors. As much as 85 percent comes from things such as attitude, life control and relationships.

Most of us are significantly better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness levels haven‘t changed to reflect that.Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness.

Many decades ago, the ―sage of Baltimore, Maryland‖, editor H L Mencken, defined wealth as earning $100 more than your ―wife‘s sister‘s husband.‖ Behavioral economists(行为经济学家) now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is that we compare ourselves to people better off materially.

―The argument is that if you want to be happy, there‘s a very simple thing you can do: Compare yourself to people who are less well off than you --- poorer, smaller house and car‖ said Sharp.

The happiness Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors by focusing on ―more than just your bank account‖.

―If I compare myself to Bill Gates then I‘m always going to be down,‖ said Sharp.

A better thing to compare with, he said, might be Kerry Packer, Australia‘s richest person who has had a kidney transplant (肾脏移植) and heart surgery in recent years.

56. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. You can increase your happiness levels by attending the classes at the Happiness Institute.

B. Most of us are happier than our parents or grandparents since we earn more.

C. Earn $100 more than your wife‘s sister‘s husband if you want to be happy.

D. Both Bill Gates and Kerry Packer are examples of those who are extremely rich but obviously unhappy.

57. The underlined phrase has the same meaning as the word____.

A. healthy

B. unhealthy

C. free

D. wealthy.

58. The author wrote the passage to tell us _____.

A. happiness is everything.

C. We can have fun at the Happiness Institute.

D. money doesn‘t always mean happiness

59.According to the passage, happiness mainly depends on___.

A. income, assets and other financial factors

B. additional wealth apart from the satisfaction of the basic needs of shelter and food

C. things like attitude, life control and relationships

D. Society development

B

I once heard someone say, ―We don‘t remember days; we remember moments.‖ However, at today‘s fast pace we often forget to enjoy small pleasures while we make big plans.

In the race to be better or best, we sometimes lose sight of just being. And just being, just soaking in and savoring(欣赏,品尝) a beautiful moment, can provide some of life‘s greatest pleasures. A crackling fire on a cold winter night; a good book; a love letter from your other half; a great sunset; a great meal; or a timeless moment with your child or a friend… These moments, if we stop long enough to enjoy, are the essence of life.

I love to fish, especially for large-mouth bass (鲈鱼). About three years ago, I was watching television late one night and got this crazy idea to go fishing in the lake behind my house. Of course, my wife thought I was nuts. It was almost midnight! I convinced her I was sensible and took off. I walked out to a warm summer wind and looked up at the starry sky and the breathtaking full moon. I allowed my senses to appreciate every second — the sweet smell of flowers, the sound of every cricket and bullfrog, the m oon‘s reflection dancing off the water — it was a perfect night.

After walking across a small field, I took out a flashlight and selected a lure. On my first cast, I reeled in a bass weighing over five pounds, one of the largest I had ever caught. I gently released it back into the water and continued my midnight adventure. During the next two hours, I caught seventeen bass, all between two and five pounds. Although I‘ve fished for almost fifty years, no fishing memory can top that warm summer night.

But that night provided far more than a fishing memory. It was a life memory. It provide me a picture of what life could be like if I just slowed down enough to enjoy the moments. On my way back to the house, as I walked through the tall grass, I took one last look at the sky and stopped to say, ―Thank you, God, for giving me this night.‖

Remember, it will only last for a little while… So savor the moments, savor the memories of your life.

D. Every hour of every day is an unspeakably perfect miracle.

C

My youngest eagerly entered kindergarten, while my oldest excitedly started college and I felt left behind. After being very happy as a stay-at-home mother of six children, I suddenly felt disappointed on a dead-en mad and surrounded by a lack of direction. An inner anxiety troubled me that life was passing by. The road, requiring expensive education, appeared too long and difficult.

Thanks to supportive friends and family, I eventually discovered the road sign pointing to the ideal program at an excellent college, which offered a lot of tuition grants(学费资助). With anxiety and fear, I went to the college at age forty. Driving to my first ma ster‘s class, I was as eager as children for the first day of school.

School required sacrifices: weekends for class, sleep for study, and life‘s extra money for tuition payment. Yet, as with all good things, the rewards greatly outweighed the cost. The narrow, rocky road developed will power and patience, while the smooth, open road built low confidence. Along the way, I met companions of all ages and interests: a 50-year-old woman who took part in photography classes at the college; a 62-year-old successful businessman who worked toward a nursing degree to serve in developing countries; an 80-year-old woman who enthusiastically started classes to use the Internet, so she could keep up with the world.

This past May, twelve years after starting the journey as a non-traditional student, I graduated with a doctoral degree in literature one week before our youngest child graduated from college. All six children have been especially proud, lovingly call ing me ―Dr. Mom‖. Never could I have imagined the wild rush and great travel of this ride back to school. When you hear the small, still voice urging you to do something more or different, remember you can trust your heart.

64.The author eventually managed to get the chance to study the college courses ______.

A. graduated almost at the same time as her oldest child.

B. studied the courses in the college as a traditional student

C. eventually became a doctor and worked in a hospital

D. got her doctoral degree in literature when she was 52

D

A Tennessee couple helplessly watched their home burn to the ground, along with all of their possessions, because they did not pay a $75 annual fee to the local fire department.

Vicky Bell told the NBC branch WPSD-TV that she called 911 when her mobile home in Obion County caught fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene but as the fire spread, they simply stood by and did nothing. ―In an emergency, the first thigh you think of, ?Call 911‘,‖ homeowner Bell said. However, Bell and her husband were forced to walk into the burning home in an attempt to retrieve(抢回) their own belongings. ―You could look out my mom‘s trailer (拖车) and see the trucks sitting at a distance,‖ Bell said. ―We just wished we could have gotten more out.‖

South Fulton Mayor David Crocker defended the fire department, saying that if firefighters responded to non-subscribers, no one would have an intention to pay the fee. Residents in the city of South Fulton receive the service automatically, but it is not extended to those living in the greater county-wide area.

―There‘s no way to go to every fire and keep up the manpower, the equipment, and just the funding for the fire department,‖ Crocker said.

The South Fulton policy produced precisely the same nightmare thing last year, when homeowner Gene Cranick – who had similarly failed to pay the $75 annual fee for rural Obion County residents – saw his house swallowed by flames as South Fulton firefighters watched close by. That incident sparked a debate among conservative experts over the limits of fee-for-service approaches to government.

For his part, Mayor Crocker stressed that the city‘s firefighters will help people in danger, even those who haven‘t paid the fee. ―After the last situation, I would hope that every body would be well aware of the rural fire fees, this time.‖ Crocker said.

67.We can infer from the second paragraph that ___.

A. only little of their belongings were retrieved from the fire

B. the firefighters forced Bell and her husband to get things from the burning house

C. Bell and her husband asked the NBC affiliate WPSD-TV to cover the event

D. Bell and her husband didn‘t call 911 the moment the house caught fire

68.The underlined word ―sparked‖ in the fifth paragraph most probably means ―______‖.

D. kept out

69.The writer writes the passage to _____.

A. urge all the residents to pay the annual fee

B. make everyone aware of the rural fire fee

C. warn people of fires

D. report the incident objectively

70.What will probably be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A. The punishment the firefighters are faced with

Nowadays with the increasing use of the Internet, so many people

are crazy about shopping online that it has become a new trend.

On the one hand, online shopping can bring us much convenience. Online shopping can be available 24 hours a day. It is easy to compare as many products and prices as we like before we make an informed decision. Besides, it’ll be delivered to our doorstep so it saves us both time and effort. On the other hand, we cannot feel the items we want to buy. We have to pay shipping fees and wait for the items to be shipped. Sometimes the packages get lost and arrive later than expected.

As for me, the benefits of online shopping outweigh its drawbacks. Measures should be taken to punish those dishonest and illegal online sellers. Customers can never be too cautious when shopping online.
