一。词汇解疑

1. continent n.洲;大陆

Africa is a continent.非洲是个大陆。

The Whites have gone for a holiday on the Continent.

2. because of因为

because是连词,后接从句;because of是短语介词,后接名词,或动名词。如:

I do it because I like it.我做这件事是因为我喜欢。

I was late because of the rain.因为下雨的我才迟到。

3. well-known adj.众所周知的;着名的

That writer is well-known.那位作家很有名。

【辨析】famous, well-known, world-famous

famous意为“着名”,通常用来指好的人或事物。well-known是口头用语,语气不及famous强,可用于普通事物。world-famous意为“举世闻名的”,形容影响大,范围广。如:

France is famous for its fine food and wine.法国以其佳肴和美酒着名。

Princeton has a world-famous university.普林斯顿有一所世界文明的大学。

This is a well-known restaurant.这是一家有名的饭店。

4. athlete n.运动员。w。w.k。s。5。u.c。o。m

The athlete is very strong.这位运动员非常强壮。

【辨析】athlete与player

athlete可指高考资源网运动员,体育家,在英国主要指田径运动员。player的词义较广,指演员,打牌下棋者,以及球类运动员。如:

5. gold n.黄金;金币adj.金的;金制的

Gold is still a valuable metal but is often found in the mountain streams.金子仍然是一种贵重金属,但是常常能在山里的溪流中找到。

gold可表示“高贵;善良”如:

【辨析】gold与golden

gold指真金制品,意为“金质的”,有时可作“似金的”。golden意为“金色的;极好的”。如:

9. tie v.捆;绑;系;束缚 n.领带;胜负不分

tie…to…把……系在……上,tie sth. up把……捆起来,tie sb. up使某人忙碌。如:

His new job ties him up all day.新工作使他整天忙碌。

10. final adj.最后的;最终的;不能变的

final作形容词用没有比较级和最高级。如:

The final thing she did before she left was to lock the door.她离开前做的最后一件事是锁门。Is that your final offer?这是你最后的报价吗?

Z is the final letter in the alphabet. Z是字母表中最后的一个字母。

My judgment is final.我的判断不变。

final作名词用,当表示“决赛”和“期终考试”时一般用复数。如:

When do you take your finals?你什么时候参加期终考试?

She is to play in the finals.她将进入决赛。

11.dive vi.& n.潜水,跳水,下潜,俯冲;冲入

He dived from the bridge and rescued the drowning child.他从桥上跳到水中,救起那快溺死的孩子。The swimmer dived into the swimming pool from the diving board.游泳运动员从跳板上跳入游泳池。The eagle dived down on the rabbit.那只雄鹰向兔子猛扑下来。

The boss made a dive for the old clothes.老板向旧衣服冲去。

12. shoot vt.& vi.发射;射中;射杀;拍照;拍摄

He shot the bird with his gun.他用枪打鸟。

The three prisoners were shot.三个囚犯被枪毙了。

He shot out of school when the bell rang.当铃声响了时,他飞快地跑出学校。

This story was shot quickly.这个故事片拍得挺快。

shoot at向……射击。如:

The hare ran away before he shot at it.他还来不及瞄准,野兔就跑了。

二。难句释惑

1. What do the five Olympic rings stand for ? 奥林匹克的五个环子代表什么?

①ring作名词用意为“圆圈,环形记号,戒指”。作动词用意为“围起来”。

The children sat in a ring round the teacher.孩子们围着老师坐成一圈。

She wore a gold ring on her finger.她的手指上戴了只金戒指。

Police ringed the building.警察把大楼包围起来了。

②stand for意为“代表;主张;支持”。如:

The letters PLA stand for the People’s Liberation Army. PLA这几个字母代表中国人民解放军。

He always stand for what is right.他对正确的事情总是支持。

He stoods for freedom of speech. 他主张言论自由。

2. Each question is worth one point. 每个问题值得一分。

①be worth值得,后面接名词或动名词,worth后接动名词用主动形式表示被动意思。be worthy of 后接动名词的被动式。如:

-How much is this bicycle worth? -It's worth £50。“这辆自行车值多少钱?”“值50英磅。”

What is worth doing is worth doing well. 值得做的事情就得做好。

It isn't worth waiting for him.不值得等他。

The book is worthy of being reading.这本书值得一读。(=The book is worth reading.)

②用well而不用very修饰worth,如:

(错误)It is very worth the price .

(正确)It is well worth the price . 它很值这个价。

3.The Lakers scored 20 points in the last quarter, beating the Heat 101-96.湖人队在最后一克钟得了20分,以101比96的比分赢了热火队。

①score作名词用,指(游戏、比赛的)得分,评分,成绩。作动词用意为“得分”,如:

The score in the football game was 4 - 1.足球比赛的比分是四比一。

He earns better test scores.他取得较好的考试成绩。

Our team scored 3 points in the first half.我队在前半场得三分。

②beating是现在分词作伴随状语,伴随状语主要是对主句的动作进行修饰、陪衬或补充、说明。伴随状语的动作与主句动作是同时发生的。如:

We worked there for a week , helping them to get in wheat.我们在那儿劳动一周帮助他们收麦子。

Fill in this form, giving your name ,address, etc.填这份表格,写下你的名字、地址等。

③beat既指打败,也表示赢。宾语为sb.时,不可用win代替beat。win sb.意为“说服了某人”如:。w。w.k。s。5。u.c。o。m

(错误)Our team has won your team.

(正确)Our team has beaten your team. 我们队赢了你们队。

She won the her daughter to marry the young man.她说服了她女儿嫁给这年青人。

4.I’d rather watch it than play it.我宁愿观看,不愿参与(玩)。

would rather…than…宁愿……不愿……,以动词原形为宾语。如:

The heroine would rather die than give in.这位女英雄愿死不降。

He would rather stay at home than see the film.他宁愿呆在家里不愿看那部电影。

类似的关联词语还有“prefer…to…”(以名词或动名词为宾语),“prefer to …rather than…”(接原形动词)。如:

He prefers tea to coffee.他愿喝茶不愿喝咖啡。

He preferred walking to taking the bus.他宁愿步行不愿乘公共汽车。

I prefer to watch TV rather than go to the movie.我宁愿看电视不愿看电影。

Rather than John do it, I’d prefer to do the job myself.与其让约翰干这件事,我宁可自己动手。

5.Which sport events do you like to watch most? 你最喜欢看哪种比赛项目?

event 意为“事件;比赛项目”。如:

current events 时事 a team event 团体赛

field and track events 田径赛

He’ll enter for an event.他要参加一项比赛。

【辨析】incident,business,event,matter,thing

incident通常指偶发的,不太重要的事件,有时还可表示事变;accident指意外的,恶性的事件,事故;event指重大的,引人瞩目的事件,还可以指比赛中的项目;matter指麻烦事,还可指物质。thing指实物,尤其是看得见摸得着的东西。如:

The incident has long been forgotten.这件不重要的事早已忘记了。

Something must be provided against accidents.必须采取措施防止意外事故。

The event drew world-wide attention.这件大事引起全世界的瞩目。

6.Why do athlete from so many countries want to take part in the Olympic Games?为什么来自这么多国家的运动员参加奥运会?

①so many与so much都是固定说法,不可将so换成such。so many修饰可数名词,so much修饰不可数名词。so many还可表示好几个。如;

So many men, so many minds.人各有志。

They are sold at so many for a dollar.那些东西一块钱可买好几个。

There is so much work to do that we have no time to rest.有那么多工作要干以致我们没有时间休息。

So much for today.今天到此为止。

②【辨析】take part in, join in, join, attend

take part in表示参加某种活动,如体育、讨论、战斗等,并在活动中起作用,不接宾语不用in。如:

They gave him the chance to take part in designing buildings.他们给了他参加设计楼房的机会。

How many of you are going to take part?你们多少人准备参加?

join in参加,相当于take part in.指参加游戏或活动。如:

He joined in the game.他参加游戏。

The workers joined in the strike.工人们参加了罢工。

注意:join in 后除接名词外,还可接动名词,而且,有join sb. in 的结构。有时in后面还可以不接宾语。如:

He’ll join us in singing the song.他和我们一起唱歌。

They came out for their morning exercises, I also joined in.他们出来做早操,我也跟着做。

join参加意为“参加一群人(的活动)或加入某个组织并成为其中的一员。”如

Will you join us?你愿加入我们(一伙)吗?

I joined the Party in 1999.我在1999年入党。

attend “参加”多指“参加会议和学习”。如:

He decided to attend the conference in person.他决定亲自出席这次会议。

三。名题导解
